IKEA PS 2014’S

INSTA-SITE #DOINGITRIGHT BY @PUJSTER

I

t’s not the first time Ikea has made it on our #doingitright list, and after this stunt, how could we not bring them back? You see, Ikea did something so innovative it blew our mind: they made a website. Yes, you read right. A website. The twist? It’s the first Instagram website! Ikea introduced their PS Collection with a dedicated Instagram account @ikea_ps_2014. The account holds 34 items from the collection. So how does it work? Simple, when you open the account page on your mobile device, it has a header, just like a website would in Instagram image grid. As you scroll though, you can select an image, click on the image, and tap to see all the pieces tagged. Each product has its own account, so once you click on a tag, it opens into the product’s Instagram account. Cool, eh? It also serves as a way to see what customers are doing with their products. People can tag their items with the product’s account and others can view it for further inspiration. Ikea and their Ad Agency took something as simple as Instagram and found a whole new use for it. Kudos to them for giving all brands this new tool on an already cool platform. The traction isn’t as huge as we would expect it to be, but we do think this opens doors for businesses using Instagram to bring in an ROI. Well done, Ikea!

THE ESPY’S

STEPS TO STARDOM

BY @PRIYAAMM How did The ESPY’s become one of the best and most anticipated award shows overnight? The ESPY Awards (short for Excellence in Sports Performance Yearly Award), presented by the American Cable Television Network ESPN, is a tribute to athletic achievement and other notable sports-related performances during the year. The first ESPYs were awarded in 1993, but why are so many people only hearing about them now? The ESPYs took a huge dive into stardom following a very strategic and timely recipe for success. Overnight, the ESPYs became a household name, and now it’s time to unravel the genius moves behind inventing this comedic, entertaining, and unforgettable award show. It’s the only place you can see John Calipari chilling with the Los Angeles Kings or Richard Sherman interacting with Danica Patrick. It’s also the only place where you can get a fist pound of Chris Berman, take a selfie with Metta World Peace, and get great laughs from Drake’s uncomfortably perfect jokes. It took a lot of preparation, planning, and creativity to craft such an impressive award show. Here are the ESPYs 7 Steps to Stardom.

1. GO SOCIAL OR GO HOME From Twitter to Facebook to Instagram, the buzz was all about #ESPYS2014. Even before the night began, The ESPYs made sure that the public knew about what was about to take the spotlight via their social channels. On Twitter and Facebook, they kept their fans updated with the process giving clues about what was going to air the night of. During the ESPYs, they had real time tweets and posts that highlighted specific speeches and events as they just went down. This attracted a wider audience and began trending on social media instantly. 2. DRAKE TAKES THE CAKE The rapper-actor may have been a surprising choice to lead the awards show, but it was no mistake. As an avid sports fan and showman, he quickly proved why he’s a natural on stage and took the ESPYs to a whole new level. Including Drake fans, their audience almost tripled with his sarcastic remarks, hilarious performances, subtle comedic jokes, and duos with Blake, Chris Brown & Skylar Diggins, Drake had everyone talking about his imitations, unique acts, and laid back, light personality. 10

The Youzus Report

3. OUT OF THE BOX The ESPYs was anything but a normal awards show. It was different and honoured athletes who strive for success every single day; ESPN put on a show that lived up to the names they were awarding. By paying attention to detail and going against social norms, they pushed the limits and create a show that had a perfect mix of comedy, emotion, and passion. 4. INTROS It wasn’t just any old mundane attempt to crack a joke during an intro. Each intro was individualized; well thought out, and truly acknowledged all that the award represented (and they were handed out by only the most iconic celebrities in media today!). 5. FASHION Fashion always plays a huge role in award presentations and creates long-lasting impressions. The ESPYs was a place where celebrities were free to take chances and make a statement with their fashion; they didn’t have any formal rules to follow and it allowed the fashion press to pick up iconic styles being carried by celebrities this season. This recruited fashion fanatics to watch the awards. 6. WELL PLAYED The ESPYs did a great job facing the truth of events big on social media leading up to the show. From enforcing the end of Drake and Chris Brown’s beef to bringing up Honourable Mentions for celebrities that didn’t win the game, the ESPYs included everyone in the show and squashed all feuds and awkwardness with comedic relief. 7. INSPIRATION Last but not least, the ESPYs received so much love because it spoke to people. They weren’t afraid to have longer speeches and the audience didn’t mind. Speakers such as Josh Sweeney Stuart Scott, and Michael Sam left the audience in tears with their encouraging words of inspiration, praise, and hardship. This connects with the audience by speaking to their emotions, which results in a wider reception.

WHAT’S NEW FOR SNAPCHAT? introducing

GEO-FILTERS. BY @VIVIANAMY

I

n a social world full of sharing ‘in the moment’ adventures and selfies; the fast rising app Snapchat has done it again. The company has added a new feature called ‘geofilters’ where different custom-designed graphics can be applied to snaps taken in specific geographic locations. You can view the geofilters by swiping right on the preview screen to access the fun new filters. What’s more exciting? These geofilters will be different depending on where you are! All you need to do to access this feature is enable your location services. There are special designs like Disney icons, sailboats, and summer ice cream floats that you could only use when you are in specific areas. Where in the Snapchat world you ask? These geofilters are only designated for Los Angeles and New York for the time being. But we must admit, Snapchat sure knows how to feed our inner wanderlust. With the company continuously pushing out new quirky features, we certainly see revenue potential in this one. Just imagine if brands collaborated with Snapchat to create unique geofilters for promoting events, festivals, or concerts! Would you like this new feature brought to your city? The story behind

VELOUR LASHES

from passion to fame

INTERVIEW BY @VIVIANAMY

O

n a fateful day, two best friends decided to do the unconventional, they quit their corporate jobs and took a leap of faith. Mabel Lee and Angela Tran founded Velour Lashes. Starting off on YouTube, they were mind blown when their lashes became a holy grail beauty product to the one and only, Queen Bey. Now with over 22k and 58k followers on Facebook and Instagram respectively; they are firm believers that every woman should feel beautiful and confident everyday. We had the opportunity to sit down and chat with Velour Lashes about the power of social media and how it got them to where they are today: This is Velour Lashes. 15

The Youzus Report

customers, whereas YouTube is perfect for speaking to a cast audience. Q1. Tell us about Velour Lashes Velour Lashes is pure innovation, that’s what we strive for at least. We introduced a superior line of Mink Lashes in comparison to the conventional synthetic lash most consumers are using today. The vast difference is in the quality of the lashes itself. Our lashes can be used an average of 25 times, whereas synthetic lashes averages about 5 wears. The Mink hair allows the entirety of the lash to be unbelievably lightweight and to look completely natural. We want all women to feel beautiful and confident everyday, and trust us ladies; a little lash goes a long way! Q2. Describe your first experience with false lashes and how that inspired Velour Lashes to come to be? Like every girl, we instantly fell in love after experiencing our first pair of false lashes and seeing how big of a difference it makes on our eyes! I remember thinking ‘Wow! My eyes NEVER looked this good!’ That’s when it all started. We are firm believers that whenever you look good, you feel good! It gives you that unspoken vote of confidence and that full embodiment of power. That’s when we started our research and after testing various materials; Mink was the softest and most natural on our eyes. It truly is something so unique when you first try our lashes, it’s like ‘AH HA, finally a lash that’s comfortable AND looks amazing!’ Q3. How did social media assist Velour Lashes with brand awareness and building the company? What platforms worked best for Velour Lashes? Without the power of Social Media, we truly believe the company wouldn’t be where it is today. We were able to connect to essentially anybody, anywhere in the world through YouTube, Facebook, and Instagram. This created a greater picture than we could’ve imagined for our company. We can’t stress enough how important it is for beauty companies to seize the opportunity that today’s technology gives us. For example, YouTube allowed us to target different makeup gurus from all over the world; helping us break into several international markets. Social Media gave us the platforms to fully engage the true potential of Velour Lashes, better than any marketing tool in the world. Having said that, there isn’t one perfect Social Media platform to concentrate on. It’s the combination of all platforms that allows you to connect well with your customers and stay completely active in its space. Instagram and Facebook are great for instant interaction with your

16

The Youzus Report

Q4. What is your favourite social media platform to stay connected with your followers? Why? Instagram takes the cake. Instagram gave us the ability to instantly connect with our customers in a visual and creative way. From ‘liking’ their photos, commenting and answering their questions, we begin to build relationships with our followers while simultaneously receiving the feedback we need, to grow our company. It also keeps us updated with what our most popular lash style currently is. With such a fast pace industry, customer favorites are changing on a weekly basis and we want to be kept up to date on these things! Q5. We see celebs like Queen Bey, Jessica Alba, and Demi Lovato rocking Velour Lashes! When did you first find out that celebrities were using Velour Lashes and what was your initial reaction? We were actually in Tokyo for a trade show when we first found out that THE QUEEN B, loves our lashes! We received an e-mail from Beyoncé’s assistant asking us if we could expedite some lashes to her immediately for a concert that she was doing in Atlantic City. We first thought that it was too good to be true, and we were both literally on Google trying to do background checks on this person (haha). However, we began receiving several e-mails from Beyoncé’s team, looked at each other and thought of the possibility of this being the real deal. We’d never forget how we felt at that moment. We both looked at each other, screamed and jumped up and down for a good 5 minutes in our hotel room like two teenage girls (we still do that sometimes when we get exciting news haha). To this day, we still get excited when we see our favourite actresses/singers wearing Velour

Lashes! It’s like our baby; we get excited about EVERYTHING and ANYTHING that happens! Q6. What’s your greatest accomplishment? As cheesy as it sounds, it really is the best feeling in the world when our customers tell us how much they adore our lashes and how we have created something that they now can’t live without. That feeling – is probably our greatest accomplishment. If we had to pinpoint some of our biggest milestones, it would include our first celebrity client, Beyoncé! It was our first year of business and we couldn’t believe that she CHOSE our lashes and continues to use them! Some other accomplishments include: • Our prized collection of celebrity clients from Beyoncé, Anne Hathaway, Eva Longoria to Demi Lovato. • Velour Lashes is ranked #1 for top searched mink eyelash brand on Google • We have reached customers in over 52 countries around the world Q7. What advice would you offer someone who is starting out in the beauty industry today? As mentioned earlier,

BE ACTIVE on social media! It’s free and probably the best marketing tool you can use for your company. It’s also extremely important to continuously do your research and keep up with the beauty trends. We all know, especially with beauty and fashion, what is in this month can be totally out the next. Women are constantly looking for a new product to switch up their look, so it’s crucial to keep your customers on their toes with new and exciting ideas! You also need to make use of your contacts, or expand you network. Who you know or whom you connect with is extremely important in this industry. You can learn so much more and at such a faster rate when you have a mentor or someone helping you out during that learning stage.

Q8. What’s next for your company? Ladies, be on the look out this year! There are some exciting things coming from Velour Lashes very soon. As our team continues to grow, we are able to execute a lot more in terms of projects and new products. We aim to become the top of mind lash brand through continuous innovation and to become the go to brand for all-things-lashes! When you think ‘lashes’, you think ‘Velour’. We also have been really focused on growing our distribution and our brand on a retail level. We want to make Velour Lashes even more accessible. Although our free international shipping is FAST, we certainly want to focus on allowing our customers to be able to find Velour Lashes at their local malls. It’s a very exciting time for us and we can’t wait to share it with all our friends, family and customers! If you’d like to stay up to date with the latest makeup trends or just want to connect with us for all your lash needs, find us on our Facebook fan page, Instagram (@velourlashesofficial) or website at www. velourlashes.com

YO: THE SIMPLE APP THAT YOU SHOULDN’T IGNORE BY @AGNESWONG_ Yo. Have you used Yo yet? Well, I’m getting pretty into it. And so is the rest of the world. This silly app that has only one function – you guessed it: to send “YO” to people! – is taking the app world by storm.

YO. I love you! YO. Make me some bacon. YO. Bro. YO. I’m hungry. YO. Yo. YO. That guy is cute. YO. I’m tired. YO. Hug me! YO. I’m so lonely. YO. Where are you? YO. Can you see me? YO. I’m hiding. YO. Creepy. YO. What’s up? YO. Can you call me? YO. There’s mail for you. YO. I’m thinking about you. YO. I NEED HELP!! YO. Can you pass the salt? YO. Say something. YO. Are you okay? YO. That’s not cool, bro. YO. Just wanted to say hi.

Yo’s development story is a funny one. Co-founder Moshe Hogeg, who also happens to be the CEO of San Francisco-based mobile company Mobli, came up with the idea for this app on the whim that he was tired of getting his assistant’s attention. His employee Or Arbel, who was originally unsupportive of the idea, was finally convinced to build the app – which he did in eight hours. Embarrassed by the app’s lack of sophistication, however, Hogeg was hesitant to show others at Mobli what he and Arbel had built. It was quietly launched on April Fool’s Day (as a joke), and, get this: rejected by Apple because it “lacked substance”, but Hogeg and Arbel defended its simplicity and it was eventually introduced into the App Store. Despite the co-founders agreeing that Yo was “a dumb app”, the success it received was no joke, and definitely not ignorable. On the same day as the launch of Facebook’s Slingshot, the Financial Times released an article with the deets about Yo, resulting in Yo beating Slingshot in the App Store for iOS that very week. How does this goofy app demand such attention? Consider the following. It’s Friday night and you’re out at a bar with two friends, one of them your love interest. They both buy you a beer, and to an outsider, it’s probably nothing special – you have two free beers. To you, a beer from your friend may just be a nice gesture (or they owe you one), but a beer from your love interest is probably a sign that they’re interested in you too. Now, the next morning, you receive the same text from both: “hey”. Your friend was probably just wondering if you wanted to grab breakfast or if you had a rough night, but coming from your love interest, that one simple word made of three letters may mean that they’re still thinking of you or want to plan another date. That, my friends, is the essence of Yo: context > content. The concept of communication is changing; there isn’t really any content, you have to fill in the blanks. Yo is a new way of cutting through the every day digital noise and creating lightweight, nonintrusive notifications. Yo.

YO. Thanks for reading! 18

SOCIALLY INAPPROPRIATE: DAN BILZERIAN BY: ANONYMUS Dan Bilzerian. If this name rings a bell, you’re either excited to read about your hero or absolutely disgusted. If you don’t know the man, he is, and I quote, “Actor/ Astronaut/Asshole” and a poker player. Some would say, a man with more money than he knows what to do with. False. A man with a lot of money that he has no problem spending. This includes private jets, mansions, and an endless supply of beautiful women that he LOVES showcasing on his social media pages. Saying people are infatuated with him would be an understatement. The problem with his social media life is that these huge platforms are endorsing his proactive lifestyle by allowing very graphic imagery of ladies to be posted. He can spend his money however he wants, but allowing him to post what is basically pornography on social media with no restrictions seems a little excessive for companies such as Facebook and Twitter. Facebook has a very strict policy on posting nudity or inappropriate images, yet his very popular Facebook page with 4.5 million likes contains many inappropriate images. The policy states: “You will not post content that: is hate speech, threatening, or pornographic; incites violence; or contains nudity or graphic or gratuitous violence.” The same guidelines exist for Instagram, which is owned by Facebook. On the other hand, Twitter, where he has started a daily hashtag called #DailyPussy (I do not make these things up, folks) and has been posting naked images of women, has no policy or terms that states this as inappropriate. By common sense, it is, and Twitter should take this into their control. The man can do what he wants with his money and yes, people do love to follow him, but there needs to be guidelines in place. 19

DID SLINGSHOT MISFIRE? BY @AGNESWONG_

I

n case Slingshot really missed the mark and you have no idea what it is, read about its birth as a result of Facebook’s unrequited love for Snapchat in our last episode, Episode 12. Otherwise, let’s take a look at the progress of Snapchat’s doppelganger over the last month. When Facebook officially released Slingshot on iOS and Android more than a month ago, the social media and app worlds were both excited and skeptical of Slingshot’s ability to shine in the shadows of Snapchat. And there was reason to be skeptical. Slingshot had a short hurrah in Apple’s list of top 50 free apps in the United States the day after it launched, but began sharply declining shortly afterward. It has now effectively disappeared from Apple’s list of top 1000 free apps.

20

The Youzus Report

So here’s the stat: Slingshot received anywhere between 100,000 and 500,000 downloads since its launch. If you ask any startup, they’d LOVE to have that kind of reception, but Slingshot isn’t the brainchild of just any startup; it is an achievement of social media giant Facebook’s new group, Creative Labs. Slingshot received the same kind of press for anything teamed with the Facebook name (it did have a two-page spread in The Youzus Report last month), so it definitely did fall short of expectations. Does this make it a flop, and can Snapchat’s Evan Spiegal pull out the champagne? Maybe.

The answer to this question depends on the focus and goal of this app. Sources say that the goal of Creative Labs is to redefine the expectations surrounding the user base of standalone apps. So rather than finding a mass audience, Slingshot is more focused on finding the “right audience”. In simpler terms, Facebook doesn’t want people to compare Slingshot with Messenger and Instagram, and especially not its main flagship Facebook app. With a small team of only 10 people working on the Slingshot app, they are actively collecting initial user feedback and making improvements. However, unlike the Snapchat team who has consistently pushed out exciting features, Slingshot hasn’t exactly released many updates. The question is: did Slingshot misfire? Snapchat has dominated the stage so long that it’s difficult for Slingshot to disrupt the scene. It is unable to gain loyalty from users following their initial download just to “check it out”. This raises a bigger question: did Facebook misfire? What will this mean for Facebook as a brand and as an innovator? Well, one thing we’re sure of is that Facebook’s multiple attempts to oust Ghostface Chillah from your screen aren’t working.
