CREATIVE DRIVER What an incredible month it has been! Where do I even begin?! Let’s see, we are moving into new (bigger) office space, added new members to the Youzus team (welcome Priya, Nancy, Agnes and Vivian!), my dad started going to the gym at the age of 72 (finally), Mother Gill is loving her new found retired life, my significant other turned a brand new year older and we brought on two new amazing clients (welcome to Youzus, JSB Insurance and The Next Einstein!). So why am I sharing all of this? Because it occurred to me this month, that in order to thrive and live our best lives, we as humans should experience new and exciting things. If we are always in a constant state of stagnation, then how are we suppose to progress towards the lives we’ve envisioned for ourselves and achieve our goals? So I encourage you, our readers, to seek out new experiences and ventures wherever applicable in your life. It will not only give you an elated feeling of happiness, but it will help you feel as though you are that much closer to your goals. Hope you enjoy the latest issue of The Youzus Report! ;) 4

TWITTER GETS A FACEBOOK MAKEOVER Earlier this month Twitter got a major makeover. There is just one little thing – they look like they used Facebook’s template. The new look focuses on user information with a larger display picture and header image spread across the profile (kind of like a cover photo). With the exception of “Followers” being placed under your photos, it’s pretty much Facebook. Besides the Facebook-like makeover they introduced some great features like, Best Tweets, Filtered Tweets & Pinned Tweets. One our favorite features is ‘Best Tweet’, as it highlights your tweets by engagement – so the more conversation generated by that tweet the larger it is in display. It’s also a bit more organized allowing users to

filter all tweets, tweets with photos/video or replies. Users can also pin tweets that they feel speak to their personality at the top of their profile page. It really seems like Twitter is focusing on introducing you and all your quirks to the world. If you were an a-lister or an influential you were lucky enough to test out the new profile changes before your average Joes. Fortunately, us average Joes, gained access to the new layout on April 24th and although mimicking Facebook - we approve!

APRIL FOOLS Rent your apartment out for 10 minutes with Airbnb’s Airbrb. Beyonce wants you to be her intern. KFC actually made a burger so big that requires a Mighty Mouth Expander. A trip to Mars is only $9,999 … roundtrip. Domino’s is stepping up their game with an edible pizza box. OR maybe even your Facebook friend met Miley Cyrus. Waking up on Monday, April 1st and not realizing that it is April Fools’ might be the most foolish (no pun intended) thing you can do. Turning over in your bed, grabbing your phone, and tapping either blue social media, might be the second most foolish thing you could do. Ah, April Fools. The Prankee’s and the Prankers.
1. GOOGLE NAPS:
We all miss our kindergarten naps ... oh the good ol days! Dutch creative agencies Venour and Kakhiel recognizes that we all would be more productive with a nap in our daily routine. Introducing Google Naps, find the closest park bench and get your daily dose of snores in! #Zzz
2. DOMINO’S EDIBLE PIZZA BOX:
Uh yes please! What’s better than Domino’s Pizza delivered right to your doorstep? Domino’s delivered right to your doorstep in an EDIBLE PIZZA BOX. D’uh! #sanitary
Social media has done nothing but instigate the Pranker’s attack their victims in their weakest moment … the A.M. Thankfully for the Prankee’s, it is getting harder and harder to develop a solid “prank” that a) won’t tarnish your brand b) be believable. We tip our hats to the following 5 Brands/People for their classy yet tasteful prank:

We know, we wish this one was real too! Beyonce and HerCampus Team posted a job ad for Public Relations Interns. The perks listed: • three selfies with the Queen herself over the course of the Summer • unlimited Pepsi products Well sign me up! That’s all I need. @hercampusBC should probably look through those resumes ... #pickME
4. KFC MIGHTY MOUTH E X P A N D E R I don’t think this one is too far away from actually happening? There are some serious burgers out there that need to be squished like a pancake before devouring. In saying so, we’ll take two KFC. #TheBigCrunch
5. LISA & MILEY
And the best for last ... well we are little bit biased. Youzus Project Manager, Lisa, shared this image on Instagram and Facebook. A very quick, rough photoshop job and a picture with Miley Cyrus later, she managed to tally up a total of 130 likes combined on Facebook & Instagram. #itwasFAKE

1. WHERE DID THE IDEA OF AsapSCIENCE START FROM? WHO HAD THE IDEA? It started from our basement one day! We'd always loved the idea of teaching people the coolest bits about science - all through university we were telling our nonscience friends the stuff that we knew they would find interesting (like what a hangover actually is, your brain during an orgasm, etc.). So it was always a hobby of ours. After university, we began to see the power of YouTube as not only an 'entertainment' medium, but as an educational tool. Greg was seeing this right inside the classroom - kids would pay attention to anything from YouTube and were actively engaged in it. Meanwhile I (Mitch), began meeting a few YouTubers in Canada and was exposed to the culture and ecosystem within it. After being inspired by a few other channels, we decided to give it a shot, and told ourselves that at the very least, it would be a great way to keep on learning about science. The idea behind the channel was routed in what we found our friends and family were most engaged with: science they could relate to in their daily 16
lives. They didn't necessarily want to know the specifics of DNA replication, but would want to know about aging. And instead of talking about evolution, we throw out questions like "Which Came First, The Chicken or The Egg?" to incorporate bits and pieces of important science. It was our attempt to reach people who may not think they like science, but if they had it spun in the right way, they would have the opportunity to see it in a new light. After launching the first video we had no idea what to expect, but told ourselves to try it out for a while and see the response. Within weeks we had gained a following that just kept growing and growing. It was the most bizarre experience! Today we have over 2.2 million followers and have had our videos seen 210 million times.

3. WHY DID YOU START IT ON YOUTUBE AS OPPOSED TO FACEBOOK OR ANOTHER VIDEO UPLOADING TOOL?
YouTube really is the place to be if you're looking to make consistent videos./content and gather a following. There is a culture to it like no other online platform. Facebook is great for social, and can probably reach more people as a whole, but it lacks the infrastructure, and more importantly the culture to create content in a form that allows people to subscribe and come 2. 7. WHAT’S NEXT FOR AsapSCIENCE? More awesome science! We've got some new ideas to grow and evolve the channel - and we've also started a second channel called AsapTHOUGHT where we're actually on camera! It's just an attempt to change up the format for people who may have a better experience relating to people, and learning from us directly, and a chance for us to do something different creatively. We've also got a book in the works, along with a few other top secret projects - you'll just have to wait and see :)

How does the public feel about Drake? Do they think he’s a great rapper? Disguised as a normal bearded guy known as ‘Fake Drake’ (we can thank Kimmel for the creative name) Drake was able to really get to know what the public thinks of him. #VEETFAIL Why do so many women suffer from insecurities? Maybe it’s due to their high expectations in our society, in media and in the minds of their sexual others. Men. On April, 8 2014, an article titled “Veet Wants To Shame You Into Removing Your Body Hair, Lest You Become A ‘Dude’” was published on The Huffinton Post. The popular hair removal brand had come up with a new ad campaign where in the hands of lazy prejudice, sexism and lack of purpose, warns women not to “risk dudeness” by having the one day stubble. Veet’s commercial transformed a ‘joke’ into a social uprising highlighting the belief that there’s nothing more terrifying to a straight dude than touching a slightly hairy leg. The ad featured an attractive woman who unexpectedly turns into a hairy man while: (1) waking up in bed with her boyfriend, (2) getting a pedicure, (3) hailing a taxi and (4) receiving emergency medical care. During every setting, the people who see her legs are horrified and disturbed to discover that she has body hair. Huffington listed natural conclusions that one would reach after watching Veet’s ads:
• • • • • • • • • •
24
Having any body hair automatically makes you a man. Removing said body hair automatically makes you a woman. If you don’t remove your body hair each and every day, you will look like Zach Galifianakis. Straight dudes are very, very scared of leg hair. A taxi driver will probably refuse to give you a ride if you have body hair. Dudes waking up in bed with other dudes is gross and/or fodder for bad comedy. Your pedicurist reserves the right to openly ridicule you if you have leg hair. There’s nothing more hilarious than a man in a dress. You should probably resist emergency medical care if you have hairy legs. Body hair is something all women should be ashamed of, unless they want their gender card revoked.
The Youzus Report • April 2014
Written by @priyaamm
These drawn out conclusions were nothing but true and relevant as Veet should have thought about their audience before they attempted to allure women into buying their product in fear of “becoming a dude.” Women should not be ashamed of their body hair, and shouldn’t be forced to “shave, wax or chemically remove” their hair if they don’t choose to. It does not make them any less of a woman. The ad had been removed after much controversy and an apologetic message was then posted from Veet’s U.S Marketing Team:
“ Hi… this is the Veet Marketing team in the US. We just wanted to let everyone know, we get it - we’re women too. This idea came from women who told us that at the first hint of stubble, they felt like “dudes”. It was really simple and funny, we thought. To to be honest, the 3 of us could really relate to these real-life moments and they made us laugh. Not everyone appreciated our sense of humor. We know that women define femininity in different ways. Veet helps those who choose to stay smooth. Our intention was never, ever, to offend anyone, so we decided to rethink our campaign and remove these clips. Thank you for letting us know how you feel.” All in all, looks like they got the idea of why their original idea could not be used to depict women in our society. It’s a sensitive subject perhaps that’s why most women products all seem to follow the same, ‘safe’ rules. Showing the product, a women clean, fresh and happy and definitely no gender switching. Veet’s ad also triggered a movement of feminists going against the social justification of a women’s the need to shave body hair when it’s only natural. Several videos were posted on Youtube about the history of shaving, the media’s faults and how men needed to change their perceptions. Remarkable images by London photographer, Ben Hopper were also part of the movement. Hopper displayed stunningly beautiful photographs of women embracing their body hair in a project called “Natural Beauty”. The photographs displayed models who allowed their armpit hair to grow and Hopper wanted to embrace their natural beauty and state of human nature.
Written by @priyaamm
The acceptance of all things natural was also uplifted by Madonna as she posted a little hairy selfie on Instagram of her self. The Queen of Pop displayed her unshaven armpit and captioned it with, “Long hair….Don’t Care!!!! #artforfreedom #rebelheart #revolutionoflove.” Which were all commencements of several movements and organizations to embrace natural beauty. After decades of fame she never ceases to surprise her fans as some reacted with support and recognition while others with surprise and horror. Everything makes a difference and everyone is free to stand for what they believe in. Our world is not what it used to be socially centuries ago that’s for sure, and I feel it’s very important for all women to embrace their natural beauty and stay cleanly shaven only if they want to, not because someone is telling them they have to.
