MARRIAGE PROPOSALS WINTER CLASSIC IMAGE POSTED ON BLOGUIN.COM
Driver I can’t believe we are embarking on yet another year. Actually, the exact question would be, where the heck did the last year go??? Nonetheless, I have to admit I am ecstatic for this year and everything that it holds for Youzus. We’ve not only launched this magazine, but are in the midst of launching an amazing web application called SocialWu.com, a platform where social media specialists can connect directly with brands. To say we are excited would be an understatement. And in the midst of all the hustle and bustle around the Youzus headquarters, I also have to admit I’m looking forward to my own personal growth and development. Last year, it occurred to me during an interview when I was asked, “what extra-curricular activities are you involved in?” that I had no ‘cool’ response. You know, like saving animals or planting trees (just saying) and I understand that being an entrepreneur means eating, breathing and living your business, but I realized after speaking to a few mentors that without involving yourself in activities outside of the work sphere, you are not contributing to your own personal development. So what does that mean for me? Well, it means this year I will enroll into dance classes, cooking classes, learn to speak another language, volunteer and travel more. Heck, I might even get my motor cycle license this year – why not? ;) Happy 2014 everyone. I hope this year is just as grand as you envision it to be and I personally hope this is your biggest year yet in terms of personal growth. And of course, thank you for your amazing responses and support -- it is appreciated more than you know!

THE BACHELOR I hate to admit it, but just like most of the women I know, I’m watching The Bachelor. This season, last season and the hundreds of seasons before have taken hours of my life away, so why do I keep going back? Surprisingly, it’s not for the bachelors (although I quietly don’t complain about them) but for the drama these women create week after week. Let’s recap this season alone: Victoria, 24, Legal Assistant had a drunken nervous breakdown which seemed to last forever. Of course, it was due to Juan Pablo (the current bachelor who happens to be a smoldering Latino, yum) not spending enough time with her on their group date. Well, yeah you’re on a date with eleven other girls. Thankfully, Juan Pablo asked her to leave the show the next morning because clearly she isn’t wifey material. Are any of these whack jobs though? Kelly, 27, Dog Lover (yes, that’s her occupation) put her two cents in on the situation “I think that Victoria is probably a little desperate. She’s digging her own grave. Makes me look better.” Amen sista. Don’t get me wrong; there is a (small) chance of finding true love on The Bachelor. Out of the seventeen previous seasons a whopping 2 couples are still head over heels in love. Jason Mesnick and Melissa Rycroft Molly Malaney from Season 13 are still together. Jason awkwardly ended his engagement with Melissa on the “After the Final Rose” special, and asked Molly out five minutes later. Love makes you do crazy things. The Mesnicks were married in February 2010 and are aparently more in love than ever. Next up, Sean Lowe and Catherine Giudici, Season 17. They’re set to marry in an intimate ceremony broadcasted on ABC to millions of viewers this year. How quaint. Anyway, I need to stop being so critical since with-

out this show I may actually have a social life on Monday nights. It’s remarkable how on a day-today basis, 217,529 followers including our very own @lisatyldesley (shoutout!), care what @JuanPaGalavis is up to. @BachelorABC has 148,329 Twitter followers and an impressive 1.2 million likes on Facebook. Clearly the numbers speak for themselves. Since there are way too many seasons of The Bachelor, I’ve decided to only rank the best and worst bachelors because let’s be serious, I can’t remember most of them.
BEST BACHELORS #1. Ryan Sutter (@ryansutter)
So technically Ryan was on The Bachelorette, but Trista went with her gut and picked him (lucky!) and they’re still together. He’s a sensitive firefighter. I’m pretty sure it’s the best of both worlds.
#2. Jake Pavelka (@bradpavelka1)
What a babe. He definitely has my vote for the bestlooking bachelor. Unfortunately, he has terrible taste in women and picked the worst bride-to-be, clingy and controlling Vienna... hissssss.
#3. Jesse Palmer
I mean, he used to a pro football player. That is all.
WORST BACHELORS #1. Brad Womack
This guy had the nerve to pick NO ONE. Hello? This is The Bachelor and that’s not an option. I’m pretty sure after that season, everyone wanted to ruin Brad’s life like he ruined ours. ABC even wasted another season on him. As if we didn’t waste enough time already.
#2. Alex Michael
He was the original Bachelor and not only was he super boring, but ended up producing and starring in a lame YouTube video titled “Our very first sex tape.” Yuck.
#3. Bob Guiney (@bobguiney)
He was so timid, those nutty women practically ate him alive. At the end of the season he presented his “future wife” with a promise ring. What are we, 15? Lame.

Last week during my Bachelor fix, I hit the Twitter airwaves to see what deep and meaningful opinions viewers had to express about the episode. The tweets I came across were more entertaining than the actual show, including:

FUTURE OF YAHOO!
Up until a few years ago, Yahoo’s stocks were plummeting. It was clear that they were deemed ‘uncool’ by the young generation, and they needed a revamped and rejuvenated business strategy to fix that. After enduring the shuffling of many C-level executives and layingoff of several thousand employees, Yahoo has stepped up with a new business model aiming to further integrate social communities into their services.
part of her game plan has been to acquire as much talent as possible into the company. This didn’t just mean to hire more employees, but to acquire companies as a whole and merge those staff into Yahoo also. While Yahoo acquired an average of 5 companies annually in previous years, they acquired a whopping 22 companies in 2013. It’s almost a running joke in the tech community that any upcoming startup acquisition will be one by Yahoo! SEATTLE SEAHAWKS
Unfortunately I don’t know much about Super Bowl XLVIII except the hype around it is exciting! It really doesn’t matter to me who wins, but I can guarantee nonetheless that I’ll be watching along with at least 100 million other people. The football part is what most people care about, but for me I’m all about the puppy bowl and the commercials (if you haven’t heard of the puppy bowl -- you’ve been missing out). Last year the average 30 second commercial in Super Bowl XLVII was estimated to cost a cool 4 million (Forbes, 2013). Who wouldn’t be excited to watch an advertisement funded by that kind of dough? Whether you’re a Seahawks or Broncos fan make sure you pay extra close attention to the commercials this year. They’re always entertaining and I’ve got ten bucks on AXE Peace, any takers? Here are the ones I’m most excited to watch: Written By @krissyrubes

The Volkswagen brand is highlighted by how its German engineering makes it a cut above other car brands. This ad uses that concept to make an amazing commercial fit for the Super Bowl. They’ve developed a scientific method based on American humour to make “the ultimate commercial for your big American football festival.” Let’s just say it contains puppies, babies, and Carmen Electra. Perfection.
Dannon Oikos probably isn’t your first bet for best Super Bowl commercial. However, this year they aim to please. I might be biased based on how many hours I spent watching the TV show Full House growing up, but man -- this is good. The boys are back: Uncle Jesse, Joey, and Danny star in this 30-second masterpiece! I can’t wait to relive my childhood.
In the past AXE has always made commercials on the humorous side. This time they’ve developed a compassionate ad that will have everyone tearing up. The commercial titled appropriately, ‘Make Love, Not War’, highlights their newest scent AXE PEACE(clever advertising right there). It captures our attention showing us different war scenarios around the world and what happens is simply beautiful. Tear jerker for sure.

DEVIL’S DUE Have you ever thought of what it might be like to find yourself in the middle of a horror movie? Unsuspecting New Yorkers had to find out the hard way when, on an average winter day, Devil Baby was released to the public. One second, you’re strolling down the street sipping your latte like no other day. The next second, you see a lone baby stroller standing on the same street with no visible guardian in sight. THE NEXT SECOND, THE DEVIL JUMPS OUT SCREAMING AT YOU AND YOU LOSE ALL UTTER CONTROL OF YOUR SENSES. Imagine the shock, right? The creators of Devil Baby are thinkmodo, a three-man powerhouse digital agency famous for their knack of producing viral content. IN TER VIEW RYAN HOLMES
If you’re a social media maven, the name HootSuite requires no introduction. Founded in 2008, this innovative dashboard has completely sparked and revolutionized an industry for social relationship platforms. Today, it has come to integrate itself so heavily into our daily online lives that even posting a simple comment without using the platform seems unfathomable. Who is the mastermind behind this hugely successful venture? We’re extremely humbled this month to be featuring the one and only Ryan Holmes as the feature story of The Youzus Report. Holmes, a college dropout turned CEO, is the man behind the rumoured billion-dollar company. What initially started off as a simple solution to a problem at work has grown into an internationally renowned company with over 400 staff and 8 million users worldwide. So what’s next for HootSuite? Ryan gives us the inside scoop along with his social media predictions for the industry.
FEATURE OF THE MONTH
RYAN HOLMES WHAT IS YOUR 2014 SOCIAL MEDIA PREDICTION? In 2013, the growth in positions with the title “social media manager,” already slowed to 50 percent—a dramatic decline from recent years when triple (and even quadruple) digit growth was commonplace. But this isn’t because social media is declining in business. In fact, it’s the complete opposite: Twitter, Facebook and other tools are gradually becoming everyone’s responsibility at work. Need proof? There are currently 13 times as many jobs on Indeed.com that involve the use of social media in some way. Furthermore, a recent Deloitte study showed that social media is already being widely used by a range of departments all across organizations, including marketing (78 percent are using it), IT (64 percent), sales (63 percent), and customer service (62 percent). And surprisingly, even teams like operations (46 percent), supply chain operations (36 percent), risk management (35 percent) and finance (28 percent) have adopted social media for business. So in 2014, let’s lay the social media manager role to rest as we see more companies than ever recognize social media skills as a must-have asset for all of their employees. Meanwhile, we’ll see those previously 20

TORONTO’S
POLAR VORTEX Dear Torontonians: Let’s talk about the weather. I’m not just saying this because I am a Vancouverite who, alongside the rest of population of Vancouver, manages to integrate the weather into every conversation I hold. Being still fairly new to Toronto, the bouts of cold weather this side of the country brings never cease to terrify me. This winter has been a particularly rough winter for Torontonians. Firstly, we were faced with a December icestorm leaving hundreds of thousands across the GTA without power. Some even had to spend the Christmas holidays without it! The cost of insured damages from the past icestorm was estimated to be a total of almost $200 million. Later in January, the weather worsened with temperatures dipping down to almost -50̊ C with windchill due to the ‘polar vortex’. I remember the chaos at Toronto Pearson YYZ Airport when my plane tried to unsuccessfully land in the tarmac. Planes could not arrive or take off, passengers were stuck at Pearson for days due to cancelled flights, and baggage was nowhere to be found. Chaos ensued for 48+ hours. As we would with any natural disaster, Torontonians turned to social media platforms like Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook to express both distaste and awe at the icestorms. #iceTO, #darkTO, and #polarvortex trended regionally for several days. What we also got to witness out of all these catastrophes was the unfailing generosity of Canadians. Concerned citizens advertised across their social media platforms that they were opening doors to their homes, Airbnbs, and businesses to those affected by the storm. Although it is unfortunate that city infrastructure could not withstand harsh weather conditions, it is always warming to see a community’s reactions in times of misfortune. Hang in there Torontonians. We’ll make it through. Winter temperatures only last 8 out of 12 months here, right? Signed, Bitter Vancouverite

CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR FIRST OSCAR NOMINATION! - LOVE, YOUZUS
time around, convention-goers were largely blown away by the amount of innovation exhibited by startup companies. Perhaps this was a result of the emphasis on entrepreneurship and startups shown through the growing number of incubators, crowdfunding platforms, and accelerator programs globally. Here in Canada, our government even offers a startup visa to attract top entrepreneurs and talent. Regardless, the Internet was impressed by what the little guys had to show.
3. WEARABLE TECHNOLOGY
The Consumer Electronics Show (CES) has been operating annually since 1967. While it is arguable that this year’s CES lacked in innovation, we were able to see products emerge in the common themes of Ultra HD TVs, driverless car technology, and wearable devices. I could go on for ages about the unique properties of each device that debuted, but our friends at TechCrunch, The Next Web, and practically every other news outlet out there have already done the deed for us. As a social media content writer, I wanted to see what the most talked about news on our favourite social networks was. I took to my Twitter and Instagram feeds to obtain information. Here were my findings, in no particular order: Written By @leahebae
1. MICHAEL BAY WALKS OFF STAGE Samsung invited director Michael Bay (Transformers, Pearl Harbor, Texas Chainsaw) to help present their new curved HD TV at the Show. Bay was not supposed, or expected, to walk off stage in frustration when the teleprompter caught him off guard. Oh well, what can be done about what’s already happened? We can just be sure to expect that Samsung won’t be inviting him back for a little while.
2. LACKING INNOVATION IN TECH GIANTS WERE MADE UP FOR BY STARTUPS While the big tech giants failed to impress most critics this
Instagram was flooded with #CES2014 selfies (surprise!). Thankfully, selfie-takers were clad with wearable technology ranging from the Pebble Watch to GlassUp, showcasing the range of wearable devices available on the convention floor. Sure, software and standard hardware is still popular, but wearable device technologies are definitely something we can expect to see lots of in the market.
4. HANDS-FREE CARS A part of me was extremely envious of the shiny new cars CES attendees were snapping pictures with. When I realized however that many of these cars would not be operated by human drivers, my conventional mind could not wrap my head around this. Google has already sent out successfully operating self-driving cars out into public roads. It may only be a matter of time before self-driving vehicles become the norm. Until then…

Looking for Mr. Swipe Right? If you haven’t heard of Tinder yet, you’re probably either in a relationship or living under a rock. It’s the hottest app right now for those who are over standard online dating sites. To give a bit of a background, Tinder is an app that has two main components: it connects people who are in close proximity to one another, and it allows you to see their Facebook profile pictures and mutual friends. If you like someone based on his or her looks, swipe right. If not, swipe left and that will be the end of that. The connection happens when you both swipe right and voilà! a match made in app heaven. From there, you have the opportunity to chat to one another and eventually meet up. Well that’s the idea, anyway.
PROS - It’s easy to sign up for. No information except your Facebook login needed. - It’s even easier to use. Do you like him or her? No? Gone. - The friend factor. If you have 10 Facebook friends in common with a match, you could be on to a winner. - It’s natural. Some may believe that Tinder is just a superficial way of hooking up but let’s be serious; how ever your relationship begins, you have to be physically attracted to the person. Stop hating, haters.
CONS - Tinder has the wrap of being a quick and easy way to engage um, in coitus to say it as politely as possible. - Hours upon hours will be wasted on this app. The quick and addicting “yes or no” swiping features leaves you wanting more. - It’s game-like interface makes it seem more like playing than matchmaking. It may be hard to keep a conversation going. - When the match doesn’t happen you may be left feeling kind of low. Oh well, keep swiping. So is Tinder for you? Tinder claim they have made over 100m matches and apparently there have been even 50 marriage proposals, so it obviously works for some. Good luck and happy swiping!

MARRIAGE PROPOSALS This year we decided we didn’t want to showcase anything Hallmark-y when it comes to Valentine’s Day because after all, let’s admit it, V-Day is just another commercial holiday with great advertising tactics that rake in lots of dough. However, we still did want to honour Valentines day for what it stands for: love. And there was no better way to do so than with the top 3 proposal videos created to this day. We wonder what 2014 will have in store for us? Enjoy, and congratulations to these happy couples!
1. ISSAC’S LIVE LIP-DUB PROPOSAL If this doesn’t melt your heart, you’re a robot. Issac puts on a performance for his soon-to-be bride, Amy.
2. JUSTIN AND EMILY: THE PROPOSAL Justin must be quite the camera man, because he proposes to his girlfriend, Emily, in every possible way through a special effects video. Emily awaits him at a restaurant.
