Summer Reading Goes Green Sign up for Summer Reading in person at any YDL location beginning June 1. Program runs through August 20. Read! Grow! Bloom! ( 1 2 – U N D E R ) This summer is all about gardening and recycling! Read your favorite books (or have someone read to you) and attend our fun storytimes and programs that include free crafts, games, theater, movies, and music. Your goal is to spend 900 minutes (15 hours) in reading activities this summer. Everything counts, including audiobooks and listening to and reading aloud to someone else. Collect a small prize when you reach the halfway point at 450 minutes. When you reach 900 minutes, you’ll get to choose a brand-new paperback book of your own to keep. Need some help reaching your goal? Sign up for a Reading Sidekick (one of our teen volunteers—see p. 9 for details).

Ypsilanti District Library location by 6 pm on August 20 to be entered in the drawing. To cover a square on your Bingo card, participate in Reading Sidekicks (see p. 9 for details). Grow Your Mind! Join us on the soapbox and ballot box on Wednesday, June 15 at 7 pm as Zoe Behnke hosts a presentation and tour. Jeanine DeLay is co-curator of the exhibit.

6th Annual Crossroads Music Festival O N J U LY 1 5 , Crossroads will host the City-Wide Folk/Roots Fest (6–10 pm). The Library Park Plaza will be filled with the allacoustic, family-friendly sounds of four local favorites: Eric Moore (pictured), Michael Lipson, Jesse Passage, and BJ Walraven with View. Other folk/roots/Americana artists will perform at various afterglow parties at other local venues.

Friday evenings, July 8–August 18 YDL-Michigan, Library Park Plaza and Washington Street, Downtown Ypsilanti Now in its sixth year in historic downtown Ypsilanti, the Crossroads Music Festival will stage performances on Washington Street every Friday from July 8–August 18. YDL joins the fun, hosting the Library Park Stage on July 8, July 15, and August 12. Crossroads kicks off its 2011 season on July 8, 6–10 pm with the Townie All-Star Party on the Washington Street Stage.

6–10 pm, the Crossroads Washington Street Stage will host the A2/Ypsi Legends featuring George Bedard and Steve Nardella (pictured), backed by a full band.

O N J U LY 8 , the Library Stage features Gemini, nationally known children’s music performers (and twin brothers) Sandor and Laszlo Slomovits, who will perform Good Mischief at 7 pm. Children at the library by 6:15 pm will practice to be part of an impromptu children’s choir and join Gemini on stage for several songs during their performance. Bring your children and let them show off their star qualities!

At 6:30 pm, the Library Stage features Shout It Out, a mix of musical and spoken word performances, and visual art by teens/for teens. Teens will perform work they’ve created with assistance from Community Records, 826michigan, Ozone House, and visual work created with artist Casey Dixon (see p. 11). Shout it Out will end with informal Wii Guitar Hero competitions. For more information, visit ypsicrossroads.org.
