Summer Reading: Take a Bite Out of Summer Summer Reading runs June 1 through August 19. Sign up for Summer Reading in person at any YDL location beginning June 1. Sail Through Summer…Read! ( A D U LT S ) Adults who read or listen to eight or more books over the summer will receive a gift just for finishing. You can access your reading log at www.ypsilibrary.org. All completed logs received by 5 pm on Sunday, August 19 will be entered into a prize drawing.

Dive Into Sharkabet Dive into Reading ( 1 2 – U N D E R ) Dive into reading whatever your heart desires (or have someone read to you), and attend our fun storytimes and programs that include free crafts, games, theater, movies, and music. Your goal is to spend 900 minutes (that’s 15 hours) in reading activities throughout the summer. You may read books, magazines, newspapers, websites—even cereal boxes. Everything counts, including audiobooks and listening to and reading aloud to someone else. Collect a prize when you reach the 450-minute mark. When you log 900 minutes, you’ll get to choose a brand new book of your own to keep.

Sharkabet Exhibit YDL-Whittaker, June 9 through August 19 Come on in! The water’s fine… or is it? YDL is pleased to host the Michigan premiere of the exhibit Sharkabet: A Sea of Sharks from A to Z—a fun way to explore the mysterious world of sharks. Consisting of panels and text drawn by Alaskan artist Ray Troll for the book of the same name, Sharkabet presents an alphabet of living and extinct sharks in a series of colorful, whimsical, yet scientifically accurate drawings. Sharkabet makes it fun to learn about these creatures, which have been in existence for more than 400 million years. And these sharks won’t bite —we promise!

Kids: Need help reaching your goal? Sign up for a Reading Sidekick, one of our teen volunteers. See p.12 for details.

Sharkabet: A Sea of Sharks from A to Z is produced by the Miami Science Museum.

Reading Bites! ( R E A D E R S 1 3 – 1 8 ) This summer, the Ypsilanti District Library challenges teens to complete at least 10 “plays” (activities), one in each of the 10 categories, by 5 pm on August 19 to be entered in a grand prize drawing. Submit plays as you complete them at any location to earn chances in a weekly drawing for smaller prizes. Attend programs, read, explore the library and Ypsilanti for tons of summer fun!
