Snoopy Flies Into Town Snoopy as the World War I Flying Ace W YDL-Whittaker, February 3– March 10 Hey, Peanuts fans! Charles Schulz’s classic comic strips featuring Snoopy as the World War I Flying Ace will be on display in the Community Room at YDL-Whittaker Road from February 3 through March 10. This exhibition is great for the whole family and includes 40 of Snoopy’s boldest adventures in his transformed doghouse– now a Sopwith Camel airplane. Follow Snoopy on his imaginary adventures through the skies of Europe sparring with his archenemy, the Red Baron. Join us for a reception on Tuesday, February 8 from 7–8 pm to view the exhibit and enjoy some light refreshments.

What Makes Life Worth Living: Life is So Good The subject for the 2011 Community Reads is “What Makes Life Worth Living.” The book selected to illustrate this theme is Life Is So Good by George Dawson and Richard Glaubman. In this remarkable book, 103-year-old George Dawson, a slave’s grandson who learned to read at age 98, offers valuable lessons on life as well as a fresh, firsthand view of America during the 20th century.
The Friends of the Ypsilanti District Library are great ambassadors for the library and great supporters through fundraising efforts as well. In May, they will offer an assortment of organic vegetable and herb seedlings, flats of flowering annuals, perennials and landscape plants, and hanging baskets. Plant sale dates are: order forms available 4/2, order forms due 5/7, and plant pick-up 5/21 during the May book sale at YDL-Whittaker. Friends Members get a 10% discount on their orders.
Michigan Week Events This year YDL is going all out to celebrate Michigan Week in May, with programs on native plants, container gardens, snakes and turtles, movies made in Michigan, Motown karaoke, and a Cook Michigan cooking contest. The story of the Willow Run Bomber plant and tales from the Ypsilanti archives will round out the week. Information: 482-4110 ext. 1377. See pages 10–11 for details.
We are pleased to host a free presentation by Richard Glaubman (Mr. Dawson has passed away) on Saturday, January 22 at 1:30 pm in Washtenaw Community College’s Towsley Auditorium. Glaubman has appeared on “CBS Sunday Morning,” “Good Morning America,” the Discovery Health Channel, and numerous regional television and radio stations. Life Is So Good has been a selection of both the Book of the Month Club and the Literary Guild. Book groups at YDL-Whittaker will discuss this book on Thursday, 2/3 at 10:30 am, Tuesday, 2/22 at 7 pm, and Monday, 3/14 at 7 pm. Luis Rodriguez: Celebration of the Arts W YDL-Whittaker, Thursday, March 31, 7 pm “Art is the heart’s explosion on the world,” says Luis Rodriguez, award-winning poet, activist, and best-selling author of Always Running: La Vida Loca, Gang Days in L.A. In that spirit, join Rodriguez in a buildingwide celebration of the arts on Thursday, March 31 at 7 pm. Enjoy an array of activities for all ages: Rodriguez will read from his work, which highlights the power of art as a force for change. Also that evening, Detroit’s undisputed Queen of the Blues, Alberta Adams, will belt out the blues courtesy of the Jazz Foundation of

ONGOING EVENTS M First Steps Parent Education Classes Every Friday starting Jan 14, 12:30–2 pm First Steps offers parent/ child playgroups, developmental screenings, personal visits, a Parents as Teachers® Born to Learn Curriculum, and many other services to prepare your child for success in school and life. There is a $10 annual fee and a $0-65 fee (depending on family income) for the 11-week term, paid directly to First Steps. Call parent educator Althea Wilson at 734-678-4653 to register.
