On June 23rd YSI released the mini course “ Yoga for Negative emotions” with Earle Birney, a 6-week selfpaced course that will allow you to break free of all your negative emotions and get to a place where you can help others do the same. In this course we take a look at our emotions from the unique perspective of the ancient traditions of yoga. With a

flexible program that can be self paced or joined through an online community for an interactive six week experience. This course allow us to explore how the physical body is connected to our thoughts and emotions by looking deeper into the subtle body and how it relates to breaking free from negative states of mind, discovering how misunderstanding seeds keeps us bound in negative thought patterns.

What is a klesha? Klesha means negative emotions, but really they are anything that disturbs our peace of mind. We don’t need to be afraid of our negative emotions or feel bad about them, or pretend that we don’t have them. In fact, it’s incredibly useful to know clearly what they are. But when we let our negative emotions run freely they perpetuate our suffering and create more of what we don’t want, blocking us from who we want to be.

The whole purpose of yoga and meditation is to diminish your kleshas to the point where they disappear. According to the ancient yoga tradition, it’s entirely possible to stop your negative emotions forever. Cultivating compassion, love, and kindness are all a really big part of that picture.

Earle Birney He has over 25 years of study in yoga, meditation, and philosophy. He completed a three year silent meditation retreat focusing mainly on the Yoga Sutra. After three years in silence with his own mind, he is now the Klesha Killer. Earle has shared these ideas in youth work, prisons, and in leading retreats around the world. He brings the traditional teachings of yoga to life in a way that is approachable, relevant, and profound. Earle is currently the curriculum development director at the Yoga Studies Institute.

Iva Kulic Iva started doing yoga at age fifteen with her Dad in Vancouver and on YouTube and just never stopped. She then studied Heart Yoga with Yvonne Jacques over six years, going deeply into the ideas found in yoga philosophy and how yoga really works. Iva’s focus as a teacher is all about the layers of who we are, the notion that when we get into the breath and move the body, it changes the way we respond to the world and plants seeds to bring greater conscious awareness to how we want to be in the world and how we want to see the world.

YOGA SUTRA CHAPTER 2 WITH GESHE MICHAEL ROACH The Yoga Sutra was written by Master Patanjali around 2,000 years ago. He was a great yogi, a doctor, a dancer, a meditator and a Sanskrit scholar. What do all of these have in common? YOGA IS A WORD WITH MANY MEANINGS.

One meaning is the union of the winds within our inner body. We unite these winds with our yoga practice, when we think and understand. The ancient texts say that the winds will sing within us. They will flow free and force us to dance and to run to heal others. So here we find a common thread and a clue for our own lives. In May 2021 the Yoga Studies Institute had the amazing opportunity to explore the chapter 2 of MAster Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra under the perspective of Geshe Michael Roach.

Geshe Michael Roach spent 1,000 days in silent retreat to distill an authentic and fresh translation of the most essential text on yoga, Master Patanjali’s Yoga Sutra. During 10 days GMR shared his interpretation of the CH2 verses, in a really authentic way that has not been heard before. The Yoga Sutra reminds us that we are meant for something bigger and it gives us a map to get there, covering the whole path of yoga in clear, achievable steps. It encourages us to be honest with ourselves while stepping into a joy, love, and compassion so big that we could hardly imagine it, something that will allow us to serve the whole world.

WHY LADY NIGUMA? Lady Niguma lived about 1000 years ago in India. Her yoga is one of the oldest written records of the asanas and the only asana series designed by a woman in ancient times that we have been able to find. Lady Niguma’s yoga is special. She goes through all of the difficult emotions that exist in the human heart and then prescribes certain poses for each one. Each bend, each twist, each bandha has a specific purpose for the heart, mind, and spirit. Her yoga also has a special order in the sequencing of the asanas going up the chakras and having a powerful effect on the body and prana, changing us very quickly in the process.
