The Beeghly Physical Education Center serves as the home for the Youngstown State University volleyball program as well as the men's and women's basketball teams. Beeghly Center is located on the northwest end of YSU's scenic downtown campus and comprises part of the Penguins' on-campus athletic venues. Opened in the 1972-73 school year, the arena has received significant upgrades this decade. Most recently, a new Connor PermaFlex floor in the main gym was installed prior to the 2008 season. Earlier in the academic year, a new weight room was opened on the third level to accommodate YSU’s athletic programs housed in Beeghly Center. In May 2002, the facility underwent more than $2.5 million in renovations that included a new front and rear lobby and new hallways and locker rooms. Also a new $150,000 sound system, two additional

scoreboards and expanded press-row seating were added. The multipurpose facility also includes an Olympic-sized swimming and diving pool, racquetball and squash courts, classrooms and administrative offices. Beeghly Center was dedicated on Dec. 23, 1972, when the Penguins, under Hall of Fame coach Dom Rosselli, played host to Ohio University. The original seating capacity of 6,000 was altered prior to the 1983-84 college basketball season by adding permanent seats at both ends of the court and 1,260 chairback seats at mid-court. The facility has a current capacity of 6,300 for basketball seating. Since 2004 the Beeghly Center has hosted the Horizon League Volleyball Championship, an in-season tournament and top-25 teams Ohio State and Dayton.

2010 Penguins Volleyball With a new coaching staff, four new starters and eight newcomers, it’s clear that the 2010 volleyball season will be one of transition for Youngstown State. First-year head coach Krista Burrows is hoping the Penguins can transition into a quicker, more aggressive team in the short term. Long term, Burrows is banking that she will transition YSU into a top-tier program in the Horizon League. Burrows was considered one of the top young coaches in the NAIA after leading Walsh University to regional and national success in six seasons. Burrows led the school, located about 55 miles west of YSU, to two NAIA tournaments, three top 25 finishes and an average of more than 27 wins from 2004 to 2009. Although Youngstown State is her first stop as a Division I head coach, Burrows is certainly familiar with the division. She was a four-year starter at Auburn from 1994 to 1997, and she’s been an assistant at three Division I institutions – Bradley, Cleveland State and Clemson. Burrows has also demonstrated success on the club level. She led the Cleveland Volleyball Company 17 Black squad to a first-place finish in the 17 National Division of the 2009 USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships. She’ll have a young and relatively inexperienced group in her first year in Youngstown. Haley Kapferer is the only senior – though there are three redshirt juniors – and seven true freshmen on the squad will make the Penguins among of the youngest teams in the country. Only two returning student-athletes (Brittany Grove and Brittany McNeal) played in more than 70 percent of the team’s sets last year, and only 32.8 percent of the team’s points are back from 2009. As a result, developing team chemistry with all of the new personnel and finding out who would emerge as leaders were primary focal points for Burrows and the Penguins during the preseason. Although Kapferer and redshirt junior Dani Soubliere will serve as team captains, Burrows has emphasized that everyone will need to be vocal and ready to contribute. “I think everyone is meshing well and starting to fit into positions that we need them to be in,” Burrows said. “I think the freshmen know that we’re going to rely on them a little bit more than maybe any other program. We’ve really pushed the idea of being vocal and opening the lines of communication with everyone. We’ve tried to take away the status of being a freshman, junior or senior.” Although Burrows’ preferred style is to play small and quick, she will try to capitalize on the Penguins’ size at the net that allowed them to lead the Horizon League with 2.35 blocks per set last year. Kapferer stands 6-foot-3 in the middle, and Tasha Reid is 6-foot-2 on the right side. “We’re big, probably one of the bigger teams in the Horizon League, and we need to utilize that as far as blocking schemes and just letting them hit high balls,” Burrows said. “We’re going to try and use our middles a lot and utilize our right

Season Outlook

sides a little more than in the past.” Burrows also said the team will be more aggressive in the service game to get teams out of rhythm. “We want to make sure we’re getting better throughout the season,” the first-year coach said. “Whether that means we pick up more wins at the end of the season than the beginning, it’s something that’s important for us. We’re going to set a lot of goals based on stats, such as hitting percentage and side-out percentage. If we pass, serve receive and side out, we’ll be successful.”

Setters Soubliere is the lone returning setter on the team, and she is one of the most athletic players on the squad. She was limited by a knee injury her first two years on campus, which forced her to miss all of 2008, and she played in 42 sets last year. She averaged 7.5 assists last year, and Burrows said the redshirt junior has improved and played consistently in practice. Soubliere has also taken on a leadership role and been a vocal player, which earned her the captainship. Freshman Casey D’Ambrose is the only other setter on the squad, and Burrows has raved about the training she received during the club season over the past 10 years. She was a three-time allconference selection and three-time team MVP at Addison Trail High in Illinois.

Defensive Specialists McNeal is the only returning defensive specialist, and she has emerged as the frontrunner to start at libero. The junior played in all but two sets last year, and she finished second on the squad with 208 digs. Junior Brianna Kern transferred to YSU from Centenary, and she has the ability to contribute in the back row or at the net. She led Centenary in kills in both of her two seasons there, and she posted 227 digs as a sophomore. Freshman Chelsea Guerrieri will also receive playing time in the back row. She set Girard High’s record for career digs and aces, and Burrows expects her to contribute with her serving if nothing else. Fellow freshman Erica Beck appeared on the AVCA All-America Watch List at the beginning of her senior year at West Bend East in Wisconsin, but she’ll miss at least the beginning of the year as she recovers from knee surgery.

Outside Hitters Three of the six returners are outside hitters, which makes the position the most experienced on the squad. Juniors Brittany Grove and Reid both have more than 180 career kills, and junior Kelsi Bitter is expected to have a larger role than her previous two seasons. Grove finished with 179 kills and 171 digs last year in her first season playing full-time, and Reid had 84 kills after registering 154 as a

Page 4

Junior right side hitter Tasha Reid will be looked upon to be a big contributor both offensively and defensively by first-year coach Krista Burrows.

redshirt freshman in 2008. Even with all of the experience returning, freshman Marissa (Missy) Hundelt is expected to start as a six-rotation player from day one. She led the St. Louis area with 5.42 kills per set, and she averaged 5.18 digs per set as a senior. Hundelt was previously ranked as one of the top 79 sophomores in the nation after recording a .529 attack percentage, the second-best for a season in Missouri history. Hubbard High graduate Jackie Carlisle is also a freshman outside hitter who signed in the fall with Hundelt. Carlisle was a First-Team All-Ohio pick as a junior and senior and finished her career with 1,092 kills.

Middle Blockers Kapferer has played in 71 matches in her first three years, but she’ll be asked to be a featured player in the middle for the first time in her career in 2010. She’ll be joined by freshmen Jenna Cavanaugh and Nichele Johnson. Kapferer battled an early injury and split time between the middle and right side last year as she averaged career-best 1.66 kills per set. Her best year came as a sophomore when she posted 156 kills and 82 blocks while playing exclusively in the middle. Cavanaugh is expected to start alongside Kapferer. Although she is just six feet tall, she was named one of the top five blockers in Northern Kentucky. Cavanaugh had 121 kills and 85 blocks as a senior at Campbell County High. Burrows has said Johnson could be the dark horse of the freshman class because she is raw with tremendous potential. Johnson had 149 kills and 95 blocks in 18 matches as a senior at Conneaut High.

Coaching Staff

K

rista Burrows, one of the top young coaches in the NAIA, has been charged with leading the Youngstown State volleyball program to regional and national heights similar to those she enjoyed at Walsh University. Burrows, the eighth head coach in YSU school history, helped Walsh average more than 27 wins in her six seasons as the head coach on the campus in North Canton, Ohio. The Cavaliers finished in the top 25 nationally three times in her tenure and advanced to the NAIA Tournament the last two seasons. Burrows comes to Youngstown after leading Walsh to a record of 164-59 from 2004 to 2009. She was named the American Mideast Conference and Regional IX Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2008. Walsh advanced to the NAIA Tournament in each of Burrows’ last two seasons, finishing 28-9 with an AMC Tournament title in 2009 and 29-13 with an AMC regular-season crown in 2008. The Cavaliers received a final national ranking of No. 21 in 2008 and No. 23 in 2007, and they were 16th in 2006 when they went 35-3. On the individual level, Burrows tutored seven NAIA All-America selections, 11 NAIA All-Region IX honorees and 11 firstteam All-AMC picks during her tenure. She also coached two Region IX and AMC Setter of the Year honorees, four AMC Freshman of the Year selections, one AMC Player of the Year, and the 2007 National Libero of the Year. Burrows’ squads were also strong in the classroom at Walsh. Her 2008 squad earned the AVCA Team Academic Award, and she coached three AMC and NAIA Scholar-Athletes. Prior to her stint at Walsh, Burrows spent time as an assistant coach at three Division I schools - Bradley, Cleveland State and Clemson.

2010 Penguins Volleyball

Burrows spent the 2003 volleyball season as an assistant at Bradley where she assisted in recruiting and helped develop two first-team All-Missouri Valley selections. She also was in charge of scouting opponents, organizing camps and assembling the inaugural volleyball booster club for the Braves. Burrows spent the 2000-02 seasons as an assistant at Horizon League member Cleveland State under current coach Chuck Voss. As a recruiter, she helped assemble Cleveland State’s 2002 squad that posted an 18-12 mark, which was the first winning record in over 15 years. Burrows also assisted with practice planning, game management, travel and film exchange. She also monitored team progress in academics, conditioning and weight training. Burrows got her start in coaching as a volunteer assistant at Clemson in 1999. Burrows organized promotions, analyzed game fi lm, composed highlight tapes for All-America nominations and assisted at practice. The Tigers finished 31-3 that season and were ranked as high as No. 13 nationally. They advanced to the Atlantic

Page 5

Coast Conference Tournament Final and the NCAA Tournament. On the club level, Burrows has coached the Cleveland Volleyball Company for seven seasons. She led the CVC 17 Black squad to a first-place finish in the 17 National Division of the 2009 USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships. As a player, Burrows (formerly Singleton) was a four-year starter at Auburn University from 1994-97 and was a Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll honoree twice. She still ranks seventh all-time in career block assists (261) and eighth in career total blocks (276). Burrows led the Tigers in aces as a junior, and her nine blocks against LSU as a freshman ranks as the 17th-most for a match in school history. Burrows graduated from Auburn in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation services. She earned her master’s at Cleveland State in sport and exercise psychology in 2002. Burrows and her husband, Rob, were married on Jan. 17, 2009. She has two stepchildren, Amber, 11, and R.J., 7.

Coaching Staff

Ben Rodeffer, who has seven years of collegiate coaching experience, is in his first season on the Youngstown State volleyball staff as an assistant coach. Rodeffer has spent five years at Hiram College, a year at Michigan State and another at Miami (Ohio) since 2003 in various capacities. “I am excited that Ben has joined our coaching staff,” Burrows said. “He is a tremendous trainer in the gym, and he knows what it takes to be successful. Ben has the personality that will push our student-athletes, both mentally and physically.” “His tenacity for recruiting and having a great eye for talent will allow our program to move in the right direction quickly. Ben is an immediate asset to this program, and I am delighted that he is a Penguin.” Rodeffer spent the last four seasons at Hiram College, helping to lead the Terriers to a 103-38 mark during that span. Hiram advanced to the NCAA Tournament twice, eclipsed 23 wins three times and had 12 All-North Coast Athletic Conference selections with Rodeffer on the staff. Rodeffer also coached two All-America selections and four all-region picks. In addition to his volleyball duties of evaluating recruits and supervising technical oncourt training, Rodeffer served as the office manager of the athletic department. Rodeffer also assisted at Hiram during the 2003 season when the Terriers went 27-8. Prior to his first arrival at Hiram, Rodeffer was a volunteer assistant in 2002 at Miami (Ohio), where he was active in practice operation and video editing. He was a staff assistant at Michigan State during the 2004 season, coordinating statistics and editing video. Rodeffer worked in fitness facilities from in 2005 and

2006, including serving as the facility manager at The Netz in Richland, Mich. Rodeffer was a student manager at Maryland while attending the school in 2001. Rodeffer also attended Michigan State, and he completed his degree requirements at Hiram in political science.

Horizon League

Horizon League: Raise Your Sights Aspiring to teach young people, through athletic competition, the value of learning, service to others and personal responsibility Entering its 32nd season of operation in the 2010-11 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Current membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affi liation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball). The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the first time in League history, women’s golf. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office.

A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern

Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, G re e n Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joining in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions. ATHLETIC SUCCESS In the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by Butler’s 2010 NCAA men’s basketball championship game appearance where the Bulldogs fell to Duke, 61-59. The Horizon League has compiled a 10-7 record in the past five years in the NCAA tournament, ranking sixth among all collegiate conferences for winning percentage. Green Bay’s women’s basketball team became the league’s first at-large bid to the NCAA Championship in 2010 with Cleveland State receiving the automatic nod. The Phoenix knocked off No. 5 seed Virginia in the first round before falling to Elite Eight participant Iowa State, 60-56. Men’s soccer has tasted victory in seven out of the last eight years (Milwaukee 2002-05, UIC 2006-08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
