The Beeghly Physical Education Center serves as the home for the Youngstown State University volleyball program as well as the men's and women's basketball teams. Beeghly Center is located on the northwest end of YSU's scenic downtown campus and comprises part of the Penguins' on-campus athletic venues. Opened in the 1972-73 school year, the arena has received significant upgrades this decade. Most recently, a new Connor PermaFlex floor in the main gym was installed prior to the 2008 season. Earlier in the academic year, a new weight room was opened on the third level to accommodate YSU’s athletic programs housed in Beeghly Center. In May 2002, the facility underwent more than $2.5 million in renovations that

SEASON OUTLOOK There is a definite changing of identity occurring with the Youngstown State volleyball team. Based purely on numbers, only one of the 16 student-athletes on the roster has been with the program for more than two years. However, second-year head coach Krista Burrows is hoping that 2011 is the start of a new identity on the court – a winning one built on commitment and hard work. Burrows, who came to YSU after leading nearby NAIA power Walsh University to an average of more than 27 wins over six years, inherited an inexperienced group in 2010. Although the Penguins improved their competitiveness throughout the season, they finished with two wins. Fast forward 10 months, and the Guins will welcome eight newcomers to the squad for the second straight year. Although there will likely be wide eyes at times, Burrows is counting on the influx of energy and talent to start building the foundation of success she’s enjoyed throughout her volleyball career. The 2011 Penguins have adopted the motto “Climb the Mountain”, which is the name of a team drill centered around finishing toward the end sets. Burrows, who insists she doesn’t employ mottos regularly, said it fits too well in the larger sense of trying to build a program to ignore. “We’ve worked hard throughout the offseason on instilling a winning attitude,” Burrows said. “We just can’t think about volleyball when we’re in the practice gym for two or three hours. We need to start thinking about volleyball 24 hours a day. We’ve got to have the mindset of ‘I’m a Division I athlete, and we’re here to build a program.’” Burrows put a premium on recruiting student-athletes with winning backgrounds to help establish the new identity. Additionally, Burrows said she focused on newcomers who could contribute immediately, improve the club’s overall talent level and increase its “volleyball IQ”. “We also needed to find players with the no-die attitude,” she added. “We’ve added that for sure.” As a result, the squad is deeper – especially in the back row – and practices are much more competitive.

Setters The Penguins may be among the leastexperienced teams in the nation at the setter position in 2011 as sophomore Casey D’Ambrose and freshman Brianna Bartlett will try to take over for Dani Soubliere. D’Ambrose received plenty of on-court experience as a freshman, but she played at setter for only six matches. D’Ambrose moved to defensive specialist on Sept. 18 and averaged 1.95 digs per set over the final

2011 PENGUINS VOLLEYBALL 17 matches. She posted 50 assists for the season, with a high of 12 coming in the fourth match of the year. While D’Ambrose has a year of experience under her belt, Bartlett has athleticism on her side. Bartlett posted 724 assists and 51 aces as a senior in leading Bloomingtorn North High in Indiana to a 26-4 record. “Casey is a little bit taller, so that helps her with blocking, and she has a year under her belt of training. Bartlett has worked hard, and she’ll probably break almost every record in the weight room by the end of the year. They’ll both give us something different.” “We’ve been keeping track of wins and losses in practice,” Burrows said of the battle for the starting nod. “We’ve been watching who takes charge of the court and how they lead. It’s pretty competitive.”

Defensive Specialists Even with D’Ambrose shifting back to setter, there are six defensive specialists who could all see time on the court. Senior Bri Kern is the most-experienced player on the squad, having played in 275 sets at the Division I level. A transfer from Centenary who moved to libero toward the end of the season, her 3.31 digs per set in league play last year ranked ninth in the conference. Sophomore Chelsea Guerrieri, the other returner in the back row, led the team with 0.23 aces per set last season. Two transfers and two freshmen are also among those contending for time in the back row. Rachel Gambow is a junior who played her first two seasons at Towson, and Erika West is a sophomore transfer from Edinboro. Freshmen Sam Diebold and Erica Hozeska will also contend for action. “The DS spots are super competitive,” Burrows said. “We are deep enough that if someone isn’t playing well we can replace them. There isn’t much separating the six. In order for us to compete, we need to pass the ball and have good serve receive.”

Outside Hitters Sophomore Missy Hundelt showed flashes of brilliance during her freshman campaign, and she is expected to lead a young and talented group of outside hitters. Hundelt led the Penguins in kills, attempts and points as a freshman last season while also ranking third in digs. She will likely move to the right side to take advantage of her ability to hit quick sets and block. Senior Brittany Grove is the only fourthyear member on the squad, and she has played in 52 matches over the past two seasons. Her best season came as a sophomore when she

PAGE 4

Outside hitter Jackie Carlisle is one of many talented underclassmen on the squad.

blasted 179 kills and recorded 171 digs. Sophomore Jackie Carlisle appeared in 20 matches last season in a limited role, but she improved as the year progressed and showed enough development in the spring that she should see many more sets this fall. Burrows is counting on freshman Alexis Egler to come in and play every rotation immediately. She was an all-league and alldistrict selection each of her last three years at Clarkston High in Michigan. “Our offense is on the pins, so the outsides are obviously a key to our success,” Burrows said. “We have to force the ball to Missy because we feed off of her. She hits a very heavy ball, and her ball control has continued to improve. I’m excited to see what Jackie can do this year. She’s touching over 10 feet and she’s probably in the best shape of her life.”

Middle Blockers Junior college transfer Kelsey Wagy and freshman Shannon Watson will join returning sophomores Jenna Cavanaugh and Nichele Johnson to form a small group of middle blockers. Wagy was one of the top blockers in the nation last year at Northeastern Junior College, ranking 13th with 1.26 blocks per set. She should form a strong block with Cavanaugh, who ranked seventh in the Horizon League with 0.98 blocks per set in her first season on campus. Johnson posted the best hitting percentage of YSU’s freshmen last season, and Burrows said her improvement has her looking like a completely different player. Watson was a first-team AllOhio selection at Tuscarawas Valley. “We’re pretty raw in the middle, but we need them to block balls,” Burrows said. “Wagy is a little smaller, but she’s probably our best middle off of one foot. She’ll add that for us. I’m excited to see how they progress throughout the year.”

COACHING STAFF

KRISTA

BURROWS Position: Head Coach Experience: Second Year Alma Mater: Auburn, 1998 Krista Burrows, one of the top young coaches in the NAIA, has been charged with leading the Youngstown State volleyball program to regional and national heights similar to those she enjoyed at Walsh University. Burrows, entering her second season at YSU, is the eighth head coach in school history. She came to Youngstown after helping Walsh average more than 27 wins in her six seasons as the head coach on the campus in nearby North Canton, Ohio. The Cavaliers finished in the top 25 nationally three times in her tenure and advanced to the NAIA Tournament her last two seasons. Burrows had a record of 164-59 from 2004 to 2009, and she was the American Mideast Conference and Regional IX Coach of the Year in 2006 and 2008. In her short time at YSU, Burrows has seen young players show the potential to be top-tier players in the Horizon League. The second-year coach has also completely reshaped the roster to fit her style of play. Three newcomers in particular flourished in Burrows’ first campaign, and the future looks promising as freshmen led the Guins in kills and blocks. Freshman outside hitter Marissa Hundelt led the Penguins in 2010 with 198 kills, 2.30 kills per set and 227 points. She became just the third freshman in 18 years to lead the squad in kills. Hundelt was also solid in the back row as she ranked third on the team in digs. Fellow freshman Jenna Cavanaugh was the Penguins’ top blocker. She recorded 78 total blocks, and her average of 0.98 blocks per set ranked seventh in the Horizon League. Only one other freshman in the conference averaged more blocks per set. Junior transfer Brianna Kern got better as the season went on, and she ended the campaign as the starting libero. She averaged a team-high 3.31 digs in Horizon League play, which ranked ninth in the conference. The young squad continued to develop throughout the spring, and, with the addition of eight more newcomers for the 2011

campaign, Burrows is optimistic for growthh in her second season. Walsh advanced to the NAIA Tournament ment in each of Burrows’ last two seasons, finishing hing 28-9 with an AMC Tournament title in 2009 009 and 29-13 with an AMC regular-season son crown in 2008. The Cavaliers received a final national ranking of No. 21 in 2008 and No. 23 in 2007, and they were 16th in 2006 when hen they went 35-3. On the individual level, Burrows tutored ored seven NAIA All-America selections, 11 NAIA AIA All-Region IX honorees and 11 first-team eam All-AMC picks during her tenure. She also coached two Region IX and AMC Setterr of the Year honorees, four AMC Freshman off the Year selections, one AMC Player of the Y Year, and the 2007 National Libero of the Year. Burrows’ squads were also strong in the classroom at Walsh. Her 2008 squad earned the AVCA Team Academic Award, and she coached three AMC and NAIA ScholarAthletes. Prior to her stint at Walsh, Burrows spent time as an assistant coach at three Division I schools - Bradley University, Cleveland State University and Clemson University. Burrows spent the 2003 volleyball season as an assistant at Bradley where she assisted in recruiting and helped develop two first-team All-Missouri Valley selections. She also was in charge of scouting opponents, organizing camps and assembling the inaugural volleyball booster club for the Braves. Burrows spent the 2000-02 seasons as an assistant at Horizon League member Cleveland State under current coach Chuck Voss. As a recruiter, she helped assemble Cleveland State’s 2002 squad that posted an 18-12 mark, which was the first winning record in over 15 years. Burrows also assisted with practice planning, game management, travel and film exchange. She also monitored team progress in academics, conditioning and weight training. Burrows got her start in coaching as a volunteer assistant at Clemson in 1999. Burrows organized promotions, analyzed

game fifillm, composed d hi highlight hli ht ttapes ffor All-America nominations and assisted at practice. The Tigers finished 31-3 that season and were ranked as high as No. 13 nationally. They advanced to the Atlantic Coast Conference Tournament Final and the NCAA Tournament. On the club level, Burrows has coached the Cleveland Volleyball Company for seven seasons. She led the CVC 17 Black squad to a first-place finish in the 17 National Division of the 2009 USA Junior Olympic Girls’ Volleyball Championships. As a player, Burrows (formerly Singleton) was a four-year starter at Auburn University from 1994-97 and was a Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll honoree twice. She still ranks seventh all-time in career block assists (261) and eighth in career total blocks (276). Burrows led the Tigers in aces as a junior, and her nine blocks against LSU as a freshman ranks as the 17th-most for a match in school history. Burrows graduated from Auburn in 1998 with a bachelor’s degree in rehabilitation services. She earned her master’s at Cleveland State in sport and exercise psychology in 2002. Burrows and her husband, Rob, were married in 2009. She has two stepchildren, Amber, 12, and R.J., 8. The Burrows family resides in Akron, Ohio.

RODEFFER Position: Assistant Coach Experience: Second Year Alma Mater: Hiram, 2010 Ben Rodeffer is entering his second season as an assistant coach at Youngstown State with head coach Krista Burrows. Rodeffer came to YSU with seven years of previous of collegiate coaching experience. He spent five years at Hiram College, a year at Michigan State and another at Miami (Ohio) in various capacities. In his short time at YSU with Burrows, young players have shown the potential to be top-tier players in the Horizon League. With Rodeffer’s efforts on the recruiting trail, the roster has already been completely reshaped. The addition of eight newcomers to a young squad that continued to develop throughout the spring has Rodeffer and Burrows optimistic for growth in their second season on the bench. Junior transfer Brianna Kern got better as the season went on, and she ended the campaign as the starting libero. She averaged a

team-high 3.31 digs in Horizon League play, which ranked ninth in the conference. Rodeffer spent the last four seasons at Hiram College, helping to lead the Terriers to a 103-38 mark during that span. Hiram advanced to the NCAA Tournament twice, eclipsed 23 wins three times and had 12 All-North Coast Athletic Conference selections with Rodeffer on the staff. Rodeffer also coached two All-America selections and four all-region picks. In addition to his volleyball duties of evaluating recruits and supervising technical on-court training, Rodeffer served as the office manager of the athletic department. Rodeffer also assisted at Hiram during the 2003 season when the Terriers went 27-8. Prior to his first arrival at Hiram, Rodeffer was a volunteer assistant in 2002 at Miami (Ohio), where he was active in practice operation and video editing. He was a staff assistant at Michigan State during the 2004 season, coordinating statistics and editing video. Rodeffer worked in fitness facilities from in 2005 and 2006, including serving as the facility manager at The Netz in Richland, Mich. Rodeffer was a student manager at Maryland while attending the school in 2001. Rodeffer also attended Michigan State, and he completed his degree requirements at Hiram in political science.

JENNIFER

MCCONNELL Position: Graduate Assistant Experience: First Year Alma Mater: Kansas Wesleyan, 2010 Jennifer McConnell is in her first season as a graduate assistant on the Youngstown State volleyball coaching staff. McConnell spent last season as an assistant coach at Vernon College, a junior college in Vernon, Texas. At YSU, she will be in charge of alumni relations, gameday management and film exchange and assist in practice preparation. “We are ecstatic to have a graduate assistant position added to our coaching staff,” Burrows said. “This position will allow us to attend to more issues in the office and give our student-athletes more attention in the gym.” “Jennifer adds a lot of variety to our staff. She has the experience of playing at the Division I level and has a few coaching experiences under her belt. She was extremely successful in the classroom as

a student-athlete so we know she is a hard worker and willing to go above and beyond. Jennifer will be a great addition to our program and we look forward to helping her gain coaching experience that will allow her to further her career.” McConnell played collegiately at both Mississippi Valley State and Kansas Wesleyan in her time as a student-athlete. She earned a Distinguished Scholar Award from Mississippi Valley State in 2008, and she was an NAIA Academic All-American at Kansas Wesleyan in 2009 while serving as team captain. HORIZON LEAGUE

2011 PENGUINS VOLLEYBALL

Horizon League: Raise Your Sights Aspiring to teach young people, through athletic competition, the value of learning, service to others and personal responsibility In its 33rd season of operation in the 2011-12 academic year, the Horizon League continues to aspire toward its goal of being one of the nation’s leading athletics conferences while being recognized as a leader in the development of student-athletes as leaders and role models. The Horizon League membership features ten public and private institutions that have impressive academic reputations and a storied tradition of broad-based athletic programs. Membership includes Butler University, Cleveland State University, the University of Detroit Mercy, the University of Illinois at Chicago, Loyola University Chicago, Valparaiso University, the University of Wisconsin- Green Bay, the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, Wright State University and Youngstown State University. The Horizon League’s primary focus is on adding value to the educational experience through its four platforms: athletic performance, academic achievement, community outreach, and personal responsibility and accountability. It is the League’s belief that athletics is a powerful and visible resource tool that can be used to enhance student-athletes’ collegiate experience. The Horizon League’s goals are to enhance the holistic university experience for the student-athlete, to create an affiliation of institutions with similar athletic goals, and to adhere to the principals of integrity, diversity, excellence and growth. The Horizon League sponsors competition in 19 sports - nine for men (baseball, basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field and tennis) and ten for women (basketball, cross country, golf, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, tennis and volleyball). The League receives automatic bids to NCAA championships in baseball, men’s and women’s basketball, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, softball, men’s and women’s tennis, women’s volleyball, and for the first time in League history, women’s golf. The Horizon League is headquartered in Indianapolis, the “Amateur Sports Capital of the World,” with offices in the Pan American Plaza (201 S. Capitol Avenue), located a block from Lucas Oil Stadium and just minutes from Conseco Fieldhouse, the State Capitol Building, Victory Field (home of the Indianapolis Indians) and the NCAA national office. A PROUD HISTORY Founded on June 16, 1979, as the Midwestern City Conference with six charter members, the League changed its name to the Midwestern Collegiate Conference in 1985 and added

women’s sports for the 1986-87 academic year. Charter members of the conference included current members Butler and Loyola as well as the University of Evansville, Oklahoma City University, Oral Roberts University and Xavier University. Among other current members, Detroit joined in 1980, and Cleveland State, UIC, Green Bay, Milwaukee and Wright State came aboard in 1994 (along with Northern Illinois University) in the largest non-merger conference expansion in history. Youngstown State joined in 2001 and Valparaiso in 2007. On June 4, 2001, the Horizon League unveiled its current name and ushered in a new dynamic direction that has brought the League closer to its stated goal of being one of the nation’s top ten collegiate athletic conferences with a focus on enhancing the student-athletes’ experience by upgrading the League’s market and competitive positions. ATHLETIC SUCCESS In the past few years, the Horizon League has enjoyed unprecedented success on the national stage, highlighted by Butler’s second consecutive appearance in the NCAA men’s basketball championship game appearance where the Bulldogs fell to Connecticut, 5341. The Horizon League has compiled a 1911 record in the past nine years in the NCAA tournament, ranking seventh among all collegiate conferences for winning percentage. Green Bay’s women’s basketball team became the league’s first team to reach the Sweet 16 in 2011, knocking off Michigan State in the second round before going toe-to-toe with No. 1 seed Baylor in the regional semifinals. The Phoenix earned a No. 5 seed in the tournament, going 34-2 on the year and holding a perfect 16-0 mark in Horizon League play. Men’s soccer has tasted victory in seven out of the last nine years (Milwaukee 200205, UIC 2006- 08), with UIC just one win away from the College Cup in 2007. In 2011, Butler was consistently ranked in the top 10 of the nation, earning the No. 13 national seed after becoming the last unbeaten team in the country. In softball, League teams won a game in the national tournament four straight years earlier in the decade (UIC 2002, 2004; Wright State 2003; Green Bay 2005) while advancing into the second round in women’s soccer three of the last six seasons (Detroit 2004, Milwaukee 2005-06). Butler’s Victoria Mitchell became the League’s first NCAA individual champion when she won the 3,000-meter steeplechase at the 2005 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
