Madera County Land of Diversity Few places boast as much variety as madera County. From the ferti le valleys of the western regions to the forested foothills to the east, madera County has a bounty of att racti ons as varied as the scenery. the valley is known as a rich agricultural area, where much of the produce enjoyed by the country and world is grown. Here you’ll fi nd the communiti es of madera, the county’s seat, Chowchilla, home to a historic discovery, and madera ranchos, a small community with Hollywood connecti ons. the agrarian culture can be felt in many facets of these communiti es, like the tractor Parade of Lights each December in madera, or the Chowchilla stampede every april, which includes a catt le drive down the city’s main thoroughfare. Fairgrounds in both madera and Chowchilla host numerous exciti ng events, and stock car racing as well. one of the most signifi cant Pleistocene period fossil beds in all of the country is located just south of Chowchilla. Fossils from numerous animals are on display at the Fossil Discovery Center, located at the dig site where they were fi rst discovered. more than 14,000 fossils have been unearthed already, belonging to 37 diff erent species, including mammoths and saber-toothed cats. madera ranchos is a small community with a big Hollywood connecti on, as two of the town’s pioneers were Jack Haley, most famous for his role as the tin man in Wizard of oz and Jackie Gleason. their infl uence is felt throughout the community as streets are named aft er other Hollywood royalty. madera County also has a long history as a wine producing region. there are more than a dozen wineries throughout the county that make up the madera Wine trail. most of these wineries also have public tasti ng rooms, giving enthusiasts an inti mate setti ng in which to sample the delicate creati ons. as you make your way up to the foothills, you’ll noti ce the scenery quickly changes from the ferti le fl atlands of the valley to gracefully rolling hills covered in swaying grasses and then verdant forests of towering pines, incense Cedars, Giant sequoias and other majesti c trees. Here you’ll fi nd the foothills communiti es of ahwahnee, Bass Lake, Coarsegold, North Fork, o’Neals, oakhurst and raymond. Franka Gabler© - Sierra Foothills

Bass Lake was named by sunset magazine as one of the West’s Best Lakes. upon arriving, you’ll immediately see why. unparalleled scenic beauty matched with abundant recreati on acti viti es both on and off the water makes for a world class desti nati on. Various lodging opti ons are along the shores, from rusti c cabins to luxurious resorts and vacati on home rentals. oakhurst lies just 14 miles below the entrance to Yosemite, making it a popular lodging stop for the park. However, it att racts many visitors on its own as it boasts a vibrant arts community, with galleries, an historic theatre, children’s museum and more. its locati on makes it an excellent choice for visitors looking for somewhere to stay and explore the region. in Coarsegold you’ll fi nd hints of California’s past during the gold rush that began in 1849. Gold panning is sti ll a common past ti me here. Fun can be found at the Coarsegold Historic Village, as numerous events, festi vals and swap meets are held throughout the year. the region has a rich tribal culture as well, which is on display early each october as the Chukchansi tribe hosts a large Pow Wow. in the middle of it all is North Fork, located in the exact geographic center of California. this region is steeped in tribal culture as well, as it is home to the North Fork rancheria band of mono indians. You can experience their history at the sierra mono museum. While many of the communiti es saw boom-ti mes thanks to gold or ti mber operati ons, o’Neals always remained a quiet retreat from the hustle and bustle. today o’Neals is surrounded by farm and rangeland and boasts a popular stop along the madera Wine trail. madera County truly is an amazing desti nati on with so much to see and do. From excellent lodging opti ons to restaurants that will tempt the taste buds to unique att racti ons like the Yosemite mountain sugar Pine rail road in Fish Camp, the county off ers a wealth of recreati onal opportuniti es. read through this magazine to see even more of our treasures that await. While California is known for its rich off erings of various wines, many are surprised to fi nd that madera County, California’s Gateway to Yosemite, off ers many world class wines as well. the madera Wine trail stretches from the valley fl oor near madera to the foothills of the sierra Nevada, just south of the entrance to Yosemite. a dozen wineries make up the trail, each one off ering everything from locally grown Cabernets sauvignon and riesling to sumptuous desert wines. madera County is actually one of the oldest wine producing areas of California, with homesteaders growing wine grapes throughout the area since the late 1800s. since that ti me, families have come to the region, bringing with them the traditi on of their homelands, such as France, italy and armenia. these traditi ons, when combined with the new wineries and the ideal climate conditi ons, have created numerous award winning wines. as you explore California’s Gateway to Yosemite, be sure to traverse the madera Wine trail. You just may fi nd a favorite new wine to add to your collecti on. © Bulent Gurpinar - Fotolia.com (559) 683-4636 - YosemitetHisYear.Com

the agrarian lifestyle is alive and well in madera County.
Local Agriculture
the valley fl oor of madera County is home to some of the most ferti le and producti ve farmland in the country, producing crops that feed the nati on. While numerous staples are grown here, most common are pistachios, almonds and other nuts, as well as numerous fruits and vegetables.
a visit to madera County wouldn’t be complete without touring the farmlands in the valley. the sheer volume of the nati on’s food produced here is awe inspiring. the best part of the experience, however, will be sampling the local produce at one of the many farmer’s markets found throughout the county. Produce never tasted so good as when it was picked the day it was eaten.

Tribal Culture
Nancy Robbins© Wassama Round House
madera County: a land of diverse culture many are familiar with the region’s rich history. the creati on of the Yosemite Land Grant by President abraham Lincoln paved the way for the current Nati onal Park system, and mining in the area was quite lucrati ve during the 1849 gold rush and logging brought people and prosperity throughout much of the county. the history goes back much further than that, however, as several nati ve tribe s called this area home.

the mono indians fi rst came to the valley someti me between 800 and 900 a.D. in search of an area not aff ected by drought conditi ons north and east of the sierra Nevada. a semi-nomadic tribe, they would follow game and other food sources to sustain their families. their history can be experienced fi rst hand as the tribe operates a museum in North Fork that has an extensive collecti on of arti facts including baskets, weapons, games, craft s, hunti ng materials and ceremonial items. the tribe holds a festi val and Pow-Wow the fi rst week of august that is an inspirati onal glimpse into the rich traditi ons of the mono tribe. the Chukchansi indians history report that they have lived in the valley since “ti me immemorial.” Like the mono, they were hunters and gathers, living off of the land with staples such as acorns, nuts and seeds as well as deer and rabbit. the Picayune rancheria of Chukchansi indians now operate the Chukchansi Gold resort and Casino in Coarsegold. one of the largest faciliti es in all of California, it is a major economic generator for the region.

In the spring these hills can explode with color as countless wildfl owers bloom. it’s hard to imagine a more peaceful image than a sun drenched hillside covered in grasses as a hummingbird fl its from fl ower to fl ower in search of nectar. Conti nue east and you will fi nd yourself surrounded by forest in the foothills of the sierra Nevada. From the impressive Giant sequoias of Nelder Grove, to the sparkling blue waters of Bass Lake, the scenery here is inspirati onal and stunning. Here we see that mother Nature is the world’s most talented architect, as one can’t help but be awestruck by the granite cliff s and thundering waterfalls of Yosemite Nati onal Park.

madera County is also an area rich in history, which is displayed in its buildings. the madera County museum was built in 1900 as the county’s courthouse. the structure stands today as noble as the day it was built, an icon from a previous ti me and a beauti ful window to the past. Further east the historic buildings take on a more rusti c style. uti litarian yet sti ll beauti ful, they are a refl ecti on of the region’s mining and logging history of over a century ago. the wooden dwellings and storefronts fi t harmoniously in with the forested surroundings, a setti ng that is calm and serene. Beauty abounds in madera County. Just make sure you bring enough batt eries for your camera to capture it all.

While madera County is known for its diverse and varied att racti ons, nature lovers know that the region is also home to numerous species of plants and animals. someone could spend a lifeti me cataloging the diff erent trees and other plants that grow in madera County. the most common are the noble Ponderosa Pine. a close relati ve is the sugar Pine, which has the largest cones of all the conifers measuring up to 18 inches long. another common tree is the incense Cedar, a magnifi cent tree with a sweet scent that waft s through the areas they grow. Numerous species of oak also grow throughout the county, as well as maples, aspens and other deciduous trees, making for beauti ful autumns as the leaves take on vibrant hues and splash the forests with color. Perhaps the most famous of all the trees would be the Giant sequoia. the largest tree on the planet, these massive sentries can stand as tall as 280 feet, with diameters of more than 20 feet at the base. these impressive giants only exist

Artistic Expressions
Yosemite Nati onal Park is one of the most photographed locales in the world. the sweeping panoramas, the monolithic granite cliff s and the towering trees all att ract the casual shutt erbug to the most ardent and even world famous photographers. Professionals like ansel adams captured the park’s beauty and a country’s imaginati on. many have come to this region to try to recreate the magic he saw. the following ti ps will help turn your snapshots into art. 1) Seize the opportunity: When you see something great, whether it’s wildfl owers, snow-covered pines or a storm lift ing from Yosemite Valley, get out of the car and shoot it. Don’t wait for a return trip, don’t wait for warmer weather and don’t think there is something bett er further down the road. most the ti me there is not. take the ti me to get out of the car and get the photograph. 2) Stability: a sturdy tripod is paramount to good photography. a good tripod can make the diff erence between a work of art and a snapshot. a tripod works best if it has a quick-release type head and stands about chin high when fully extended with the camera att ached. other features would include a short center column and legs that can be canti levered out so that you can get very low to the ground. 3) Camera settings: the use of the camera’s aperture Priority mode, which is the ‘a’ mode for a Nikon and the ‘av’ mode on a Canon - two of the most popular brands of cameras on the market today. the most important exposure setti ng on your camera is the aperture or F-stop because it controls the look and feel of the photograph. the aperture is the diaphragm opening located on the lens and by controlling this opening, you have greater control over the shot. Lens F-stops range from 2.8 (big diaphragm opening) to 22 (small opening). a small F-stop choice like F22 creates a greater depth-offi eld and slows the shutt er speed down, thus adding moti on to water if it’s in the image. Conversely, a large F-stop provides a shallow depth-of-fi eld that isolates the subject from the background and stops acti on with higher shutt er speed. 4) Pick specific subject: With so much scenic beauty in the area, photographers can oft en feel that they need to fi t it all in to a shot. Doing the opposite will result in more compelling photographs. the more you try to include in an image, the weaker the image becomes. 34
Yosemite sierra Visitors Bureau - (559) 683-4636
Donn Hoyer© - Tioga Pass
5) Critical eye: use a criti cal eye to determine what the most important part of the scene is. is it the waterfall, the autumn colors, the river, the vineyard or some other focal point? use that as the subject. 6) Good positioning: By getti ng at the level of the subject, bett er photographs are composed. if you are shooti ng wildfl owers, get down on the ground. if you are shooti ng wildlife, have your tripod set at the animal’s eye level. if you’re shooti ng landscapes, fi nd a viewpoint that best centers your subject
Ron Hendershott©
- Photographer in Yose mite
7) Lighting: the positi on of the lighti ng is also important, as improper lighti ng will cause the colors to be less vivid and dramati c. Get the light behind you. unless you want the images in silhouett e, shoot your subject when the sun is behind you giving you the best color and natural contrast in the scene. avoid shooti ng when the sun is directly overhead. ideal lighti ng is in the early morning and late aft ernoon. 8) Vertical shots: remember your camera can be turned verti cally. Don’t get locked in to shooti ng only horizontals. some subjects cry out to be photographed with a verti cal format because they are verti cal subjects. By keeping these in mind, you’ll come home with more than pictures, but true arti sti c photographs that will amaze your friends and help you to treasure your memories of your vacati on. Special thanks to Brent Paull for contributing to this article. Brent is a professional nature photographer whose images have been widely published. the unrivaled beauty of Yosemite Nati onal Park and the surrounding sierra Nati onal Forest evokes deep emoti onal responses from many people. the power of mother Nature is on display adjacent to examples of her soft , loving touch. Because of this, many people fall in love with the area and in turn, choose it for the locati on of a ceremony celebrati ng the love of their life.
“there are two big reasons people want to get married in the park,” said Kari Cobb with Yosemite Nati onal Park. “the fi rst one is obvious: because of the beauty. they want to have half dome or the waterfalls in the background of their wedding photos. then you have special ti mes of the year like in the fall when the colors are beauti ful and look amazing in photographs,” she said.

the beauty is certainly a major draw, as Cobb said the park averages as many as 300 weddings a year. sti ll, there is another reason people choose the park for their nupti als, one that Cobb says is caused by the park’s ability to move people. “a lot of people get married here because they have a personal connecti on. a lot of visitors have been coming here since they were small children, or this is the fi rst place they went camping, or grandma and grandma used to take them here. it’s some place special; it’s some place they really feel connected to,” she said. “they’re not only rekindling their love, they’re rekindling their passion and love for Yosemite.”

other areas are quite popular locati ons for wedding ceremonies as well. Paradise springs, located north of oakhurst in the sierra Nati onal Forest, has quickly become one of the most popular wedding desti nati ons in the region. “the Brides & Grooms that i talk to are looking for a mountain setti ng with a lake or trees, cooler weather and a desti nati on wedding spot,” said rhonda salisbury, the Director of sales for Paradise springs. “People are looking for somewhere friends and family come to stay so that they have more of a wedding weekend than a wedding day.”
Da Bride & Groom atn Warsinger© Sentinel Rock
While Paradise springs has become one of the busiest wedding desti nati ons, salisbury said the enti re California Gateway region off ers ample locati ons for a memorable wedding. “the mountains have many special wedding spots. the shores of beauti ful Bass Lake, the elegance of Chateau Du sureau, the rolling hills of sierra meadows Golf Course, the natural setti ng of Paradise springs, the beauty of a private bed & breakfast and many more,” she said. the enti re region makes for an ideal backdrop to a storybook wedding.
