125TH ANNIVERSARY
Yosemite National Park On October 1, 2015, the park commemorated the 125th anniversary of the establishment of Yosemite National Park. President Benjamin Harrison signed the legislation, thereby creating the nation’s third National Park. The establishment of Yosemite National Park preserved over 1,500 square miles of land including Tuolumne Meadows, the park’s high country, Hetch Hetchy and lands surrounding Yosemite Valley.
150TH ANNIVERSARY
Yosemite Grant Act In 1864, President Abraham Lincoln signed the Yosemite Grant Act, establishing Yosemite Valley and Mariposa Grove as the first protected wild land for all time. In addition, this grant marked the first California State Park. National Archives yosemitethisyear.com | ysvb@yosemitethisyear.com

Make your way up to Glacier Point via Glacier Point Road. At a whopping 3,000 feet above the valley floor, this grand vista offers a birds-eye view of Yosemite Valley, massive granite peaks and waterfalls.
Head back down Glacier Point Road and make a right onto Wawona Road/ Highway 41 to continue towards Yosemite Valley. As you continue towards the valley floor, you will enter a mile long tunnel. Immediately after exiting the tunnel, park your car in one of the lots to the right or left of the road. Here you will find yourself at one of the world’s most photographed locations. Tunnel View offers a spectacular view of Bridalveil Fall, Half Dome, Clouds Rest and El Capitan.

Yosemite Chapel – Along the way to the valley you will notice the Yosemite Chapel on your right, which is the oldest building still in use in Yosemite Valley. Dating back to 1879, the chapel offers both a history lesson and a spectacular view of Yosemite Falls from its steps. Franka M. Gabler

AHWAHNEE
Second only to Yosemite in terms of popularity, Bass Lake is a popular vacation spot year-round. The sapphire water surrounded by towering pine trees makes for a vacation destination matched only in the wealth of activities offered. Named by Sunset Magazine as one of the "West's Best Lakes," Bass Lake is renowned for excellent fishing, hiking trails, and warm waters.
Named after an indigenous tribe, Ahwahnee (uh-wah-nee) is a quaint town located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Just a half hour from the southern entrance to Yosemite, Ahwahnee is known for its charming bed and breakfasts located amidst a peaceful mountain setting.
OAKHURST
Chowchilla is home to many youth sporting events, golf courses and beautiful city parks. Fun events like the annual Chowchilla Stampede celebrate the town's heritage, featuring a cattle drive down the city’s main street (See page 8). Chowchilla is also the site for the annual County Fair, boasting well-known performers and an authentic country western experience.
The Oakhurst region has a reputation for housing more artists per capita than anywhere else in the United States, and offers a unique cultural experience to guests. In addition, Oakhurst is home to central California's only five-diamond lodging choice and five-star restaurant: Erna's Elderberry House and Chateau du Sureau.

Find history in abundance in Coarsegold, specifically at the Coarsegold Historic Museum. The museum features artifacts from the 1800s, as well as buildings from the same era. Leave a little time to shop at the Coarsegold Historic Village for unique gifts, food items, and more. It is also home to great events, like the annual Coarsegold Tarantula Festival and Peddler's Fair (see events on page 14).
Stand in the exact geographic center of California in the small mountain town of North Fork. Beautiful landscapes encompass a community rich in history and tribal culture. Explore the Sierra Mono Indian Museum, one of the few Native American owned-andoperated museums in the country. North Fork is a great starting point for the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway (see page 19 for details).
RAYMOND Once serving as the last stop on the route to Yosemite, this historic town offers an authentic peek into California’s past. Most notably, Teddy Roosevelt passed through Raymond on his voyage to Yosemite. Explore the Charles Miller Museum and the Raymond General Store. For outdoor recreation, be sure to make a side trip to Eastman Lake for some excellent fishing.
MADERA | MADERA RANCHOS Named for the lumber that was felled in the High Sierra and brought to the city years ago, Madera is home to fertile fields that offer ample opportunity for agritourism exploration. Stop at Home Grown Cellars, an active pomegranate farm and butterfly sanctuary, to enjoy a trolley ride through the orchards. In town, the Madera County Courthouse Museum delivers a rich historical experience to visitors. Built in the 1900s, this museum was once an operating courthouse.
