The majestic views of Yosemite and Madera County have inspired many an artist to capture the scenes in various forms. It has been said that Madera County is home to more artists per capita than any other place in the county. Their work can be seen at numerous galleries throughout the county. The Circle Gallery in Madera is the headquarters of the Madera County Arts Council. At the Circle Gallery, you will find works focusing on the valley way of life: beautiful scenes of vineyards, orchards and still-lifes featuring local crops. You’ll find many other galleries exhibiting the work of numerous local artists throughout Eastern Madera County as well. The largest collection can be found in Gallery Row in Oakhurst – home to several museums showcasing beautiful photography, photo realistic paintings, inspired sculpture and much more. Nearly any medium you can imagine is on display, from canvas to jewelry, glass to ceramics. Each October the many galleries open their doors for the Sierra Art Trails. This annual celebration of the vibrant art community attracts people from throughout the country and beyond to see some of the most beautiful and inspired works of art they can imagine.

Photographer - Nancy Robbins©

You can also find some fun examples of the performing arts. The Golden Chain Theatre in Oakhurst is renowned for their melodramas. Audiences “boo” the villain and “cheer” for the hero, while the Grub Gulch Grannies perform during intermission. The Golden Chain Theatre also brings in other performances and stages their own, from powerful dramas to hilarious comedies. The Madera County Arts Council teams up with various businesses and non-profits in Madera each year to put on the Concerts in the Park series. Enjoy all genres of music throughout the summer in the beautiful setting of the Lions Town and Country Park in Madera. When looking around Madera County it’s easy to see why so many artists are attracted to the region. Take the time to browse the galleries, and perhaps you’ll find the perfect piece so that you can take a little slice of Madera County home with you. California is known as wine country. What many people don’t know, however, is that Madera County is one of California’s, and the country’s, oldest winemaking regions. Madera County’s wine history can be traced back to the 1890s as settlers from other countries moved to the region and brought their wine-making traditions with them. Those traditions have become ingrained in the vineyards and wineries Wine Barrels - Susanne Updike-Waite© that are found throughout the valley and foothills of Madera County, and have resulted in the region being one of the most prolific producers of wine grapes and wine in the country. The combination of oenological expertise and unique growing conditions, including soil types and climate conditions created by the Sierra Nevada and San Joaquin River, have set the stage for the establishment of award winning wineries throughout Madera County. From aperitifs and dessert wines to whites and reds for any palate, the vintners of Madera County earn accolades from critics and wine lovers alike. While you can often place orders, the only way to really get the whole experience is to visit the wineries and sample the wines in person. The Madera Wine Trail hosts three events each year that are the perfect opportunity to acquaint oneself with the varied selection of the trail or visit on your own, and meet the winemaker one-on-one and discover the passion each has put into every bottle of wine. The beauty of the vineyards combined with the quality wines will make your journey on the Madera Wine Trail one you won’t soon forget. And if you’re like many others, you’ll find yourself returning again and again.

Madera County

The fertile soil of Madera County grows many things. Much of your favorite produce is grown right here in the fields of California’s Gateway to Yosemite. The fruit in your fridge, nuts in your party bowl and vegetables in your salad may very well have been grown by the farmers in Madera County.

is

Agriculture

Pomegranate - Terry Dolph©

Madera County extends into the San Joaquin Valley and is the home to a thriving agrarian way of life. Many of the farms are still family-owned and operated, maintaining the charm and appeal associated with the image of American farming. Many people are surprised to learn how many wine grapes are grown in Madera County. More than two thirds of all wine produced in the United States gets its start from vines in this region. Many well known wineries in California buy their grapes from this region as well, making this California’s true wine country. Grapes aren’t the only crop for which this region is known. One popular fruit that grows prolifically in the valley is pomegranates. The pomegranate has enjoyed a tremendous surge in popularity in recent years, fueled by its level of antioxidants and other health benefits. Between the growing and processing of pomegranates, Madera County is quickly becoming a leader in producing this heart-healthy fruit. Pistachios are also a very abundant crop here. As you drive through the valley you’ll see pistachio trees lining the streets. Come during harvest and watch the farmers gather their crop with large machines that literally shake the nuts from the trees, where they are gathered and shipped off to a store for you to enjoy. Figs are another important fruit, and again, Madera County provides a sizeable portion of the US crop. This versatile fruit is enjoying a fresh popularity as chefs learn of fun and delicious recipes involving this tasty treat. You can sample the fruits, nuts, vegetables and more of our farmers’ labors at local restaurants and at farmers markets throughout the county. Nothing can compare to the flavor of fresh produce plucked from the field that very morning. Fig orchard, Madera - Paul Mullins©

For many, no vacation is complete without a round or two of golf. In California’s Gateway to Yosemite, you’ll find a challenging round of golf at an affordable rate.

You can “play through” Madera County, stopping at five courses on the valley, and two beautiful courses east of Oakhurst off Highway 49. Sierra Meadows County Club Course winds through the foothills. It is also a favorite event location, perfect for meetings and popular for weddings. A short drive up the road is the 9-hole River Creek Golf Course. Yosemite is home to the only golf course in a National Park. The Wawona Golf Course, directly across the street from historic Wawona Hotel is home to a 9-hole, par 35 course open seasonally. So when you pack for your vacation, be sure to bring your clubs. You’ll be happy you did. Golfing in the Sierra Foothills Donn Lusby©

Tribal Culture

Some people are drawn to tribal culture, as the history and spirituality of various tribes varies so much from what we see on a day-to-day basis. This culture is alive and well in Madera County, and can be seen in museums and special events throughout the year. Dancer, North Fork Pow Wow Barbara Ezell©

Pow Wow souvenir stand - Doug Scott©

The region has been home to numerous tribes, such as the Miwok who inhabited Yosemite Valley, the Mono of the Sierra Nevada mountains who reside mostly in North Fork today and the Chukchansi, one of several tribes that spoke a common language throughout Central California. The ceremonies and customs of the tribes are demonstrated at Pow Wows every year. The Mono host Indian Fair Days and Pow Wow each August in North Fork. There you will see traditional dancing, explore native foods and enjoy native arts and crafts. Many other tribes attend this Pow Wow, giving you the chance to see the unique customs of each of them. The Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians holds their annual celebration the first weekend of each October. There you will experience the heritage of the Chukchansi tribe, as well as tribes from throughout California and beyond, as they share their unique cultures with each other and guests looking to experience the unique arts and traditions of native peoples.

Long before Europeans found and explored Yosemite National Park and the San Joaquin Valley, native people called this area home. Pow Wows and museums are glimpses into what that life was like centuries before.

While Madera County has a well documented history going back over a century, a new museum is focusing on it's pre-history, dating back tens of thousands of years. The Fossil Discovery Center is a newly-opened museum in Chowchilla showcasing the fossilized remains of prehistoric behemoths found on location behind the center. Crews working on a landfill in the mid-1990s found what turned out to be a fossil. What started out as an inspection that paleontologists thought would take only a few weeks continues to this day as a productive dig with more than 15,000 fossils unearthed, and more are being found regularly. The area is now the largest Pleistocene fossil bed in the western United States. Species such as California’s official state fossil, the sabre-toothed cat, have been found, as well as huge mammoths, short faced bears, (the largest bear to ever walk the Earth) and many more are all on display. Other denizens, such as the Dire Wolf, the massive Harland’s Ground Sloth and many others can also be seen at the Fossil Discovery Center.

Scientists working on-site can give guests a firsthand look at the work that goes on at the site, as well as unprecedented knowledge of the animals that used to roam the area. You can find out more and schedule your tour at www.MaderaMammoths.org. Road 145, Madera County - Donn Hoyer©

One of the main indicators of a good vacation is how much fun it was. Rest assured that you will have plenty of memorymaking opportunities during your vacation in California’s Gateway to Yosemite. From the valley to the foothills, Madera County is full of exciting attractions, activities and events for all ages. Ride the trolly to see the workings of a pomegranate farm at Home Grown Cellars in Madera, or ride The Logger at the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad in Fish Camp. Want to hit the water? Ride the Bass Lake Queen and see what Sunset Magazine called one of the West’s Best Lakes. Bald Eagle, Bass Lake - Bill Brehm Jr.©

If you’re more in to nature, take a day and tour the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway. This 100-mile trip takes you from North Fork, the exact center of California (another fun attraction to visit), up to the high country of Madera County, with some of the most awe-inspiring panoramic views you can imagine. The Byway overlooks sweeping vistas of granite peaks, pine forests above sparkling lakes. If adventure is your calling, try white-water rafting in the clear waters out of Yosemite with Zephyr Whitewater Rafting or O.A.R.S. If you prefer to stay on land, find adventure horseback riding with the Yosemite Cowboys at Yosemite Trail Pack Station or at Red’s Meadow on the other side of the Sierra Nevada.

Others find fun in sampling the local wines. You can try many varieties at Appellation California in Madera, which specializes in showcasing wines produced locally along with local cheeses, fruits and nuts. Diverse

22 Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau • (559) 683-4636

As you read through this magazine, you’ll learn that Madera County is a land of diversity, encompassing fertile fields in the valley on up to soaring mountains in the eastern half of the county. Throughout, you’ll find cities and towns with attractions and activities just as varied. Ahwahnee Ahwahnee is small mountain community, located west of Oakhurst on Highway 49. Several popular bed and breakfasts are located in Ahwahnee. Stay here and be away from it all, while still just moments from restaurants, shopping and only half an hour to the southern entrance to Yosemite. Bass Lake A sapphire gem in the mountains, Bass Lake is a popular vacation spot. A beautiful hotel, spacious cabins, campgrounds and vacation rentals ranging from rustic to luxurious are all found in Bass Lake, as well as the Pines Village, a fun shopping center. There you can experience many fun events, such as the regular craft fairs, the annual Antique and Classic Wooden Boat show and an upcoming triathlon. Perhaps the biggest event is the annual fireworks display on July 4, an amazing spectacle of light and color above the lake. Coarsegold Located at the intersection of Raymond Road and Highway 41 in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada is Coarsegold. As the name may suggest, Coarsegold was a gold rush town, after coarse nuggets were found in a nearby stream. Today the community is home to the largest Indian casino in Central California, a charming bed and breakfast and historic museum and numerous special events like the popular Peddlers Fair each Memorial and Labor Day, and the annual rodeo and Tarantula Festival. Chowchilla Chowchilla is Madera County’s second incorporated city. A western town in many ways, at no time is this more evident than each April when they hold the Western Stampede, where countless cattle are herded down the city’s mainstreet in an amazing spectacle. Each May you’ll have a blast at the Madera County Fair, held at the county fairgrounds in Chowchilla, another fun way to experience Madera County. Fish Camp The northernmost attractions in Madera County are in Fish Camp. Here you’ll find the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Rail Road, a popular historic trek on a Shay locomotive. Fish Camp is also home to a very popular inn and restaurant next door to the railroad, making it a great spot to stay. Fish Camp is also the closest community to the entrance to Yosemite, and a wonderful retreat for those looking to escape summer heat. yosemitethisyear.com • ysvb@yosemitethisyear.com YSVB@yosemitethisyear.com

Madera Madera is the seat of the county that shares its name. The largest city in the county, you will find museums, an art gallery, great food and excellent hotels. Madera isn’t just part of California’s Gateway to Yosemite, but it’s an excellent place to stay and explore much of central California. From the beaches to the west to the Giant Sequoias to the east, its placement along several main highways makes it an ideal place to stay and play. The Madera region is also home to many of the wineries along the Madera Wine Trail, and a great spot for exploring the agricultural tourism opportunities, or “agtourism,” for those who have never experienced life on a farm. Madera Ranchos Madera Ranchos is a small community east of Madera. The Ranchos, as it is often referred to by locals, is well known for its famous founders, Jack Haley who played the Tin Man in the Wizard of Oz, and Jackie Gleason. Many streets are named after Hollywood stars of the time, reflecting their connection to Tinsel Town. North Fork Located “In the middle of it all,” North Fork is the exact center of California. A charming mountain town, it has a motel and a guest ranch, and is a popular kick-off point for the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway. It also boasts a tribal museum and fun restaurants and more. Annual events include the Mid-Sierra Loggers Jamboree each July and the North Fork Fall Festival each October. Oakhurst Just a few miles up Highway 41 from Coarsegold is Oakhurst, the largest of the unincorporated communities in Madera County. Oakhurst is home to several hotels, bed and breakfasts as well as central California’s only five star restaurant, numerous art galleries and several museums. Oakhurst is even home to the newest winery along the Madera Wine Trail. Enjoy popular annual events such as the Run for the Gold Car Show, Chocolate and Wine festival and many more. Browse the gift shops, or see if you can find all the carved bears throughout the community. O’Neals North and east of Madera Ranchos is O’Neals, another small town, located in the foothills. O’Neals remained a quiet community while other neighbors experienced booms thanks to logging or the discovery of gold. Today, O’Neals holds a popular stop along the Madera Wine Trail, as it’s home to a vineyard and winery. Raymond Out west is Raymond, a historic hamlet that was once the last stop for pretty much any person on his way to Yosemite in the 1800s. A historic museum in Raymond puts that history on display, and even offers walking tours of the historic community each year. Raymond - Nancy Robbins© 23

Yosemite's Neighbor

The soaring granite cliffs and thundering waterfalls of Yosemite National Park have inspired and awed countless visitors since the days of John Muir. It’s little wonder, as it has been said, Mother Nature was showing off when this stunning valley was created. Yosemite is more than just the icons of the valley however, as the more than 1200 square miles would suggest. There are countless trails that take you off the beaten path to explore seldom seen-vistas, powerful rivers and quiet streams creating a rich riparian habitat. Then there are the groves of Giant Sequoias, the largest trees in the world, such as Mariposa Grove, just above the southern entrance. These giants dwarf every living thing around, as their size defies logic. From the unique subspecies of the Great Gray Owl found only in Yosemite, to the popular black bears foraging in the woods, the variety of plant and animal life showcase just how alive Yosemite National Park is. Yosemite National Park is many things to many people. To some, it reinforces of the majesty and, at the same time, fragility of nature. To others, it’s a metaphor for the diversity for which America is known with its verdant forests contrasted by lush meadows all overlooked by sentry-like cliffs of hard granite and towering spires. Yosemite is a reminder that despite all the advancements human kind has made, sometimes they still pale in comparison to what nature can create with time, rock and ice. Enjoy Yosemite as you find yourself in nature’s element, and just try to come away without a level of inspiration. Let the stunning vistas take your breath away. Pause a minute and contemplate the people who have taken in these views before, from the smallest child to heads of state. Meanwhile, let us be your guide as you explore everything the park, and California’s Gateway to Yosemite, has to offer. There are long-time must-see favorites, such as Tunnel View where the expanse of the valley first opens up before your eyes, or Glacier Point, where you’re perched a few thousand feet above the valley below and the sheer immensity of the park becomes most evident. Whether this is your first time to the park or your hundredth, there is always something new to find. The Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau looks forward to sharing that discovery with you. A stone's throw from Yosemite Yosemite National Park attracts millions of visitors from across the world each year. It also attracts people like Park Superintendent Don Neubacher who dedicate their life to protecting Yosemite for visitors to enjoy. “Even as a child, I knew I wanted to work for the National Park Service (NPS) and specifically Yosemite National Park,” Neubacher said.

Don Neubacher Jarrod Lyman©

His dream became reality last year when he was selected superintendent for what many consider the crown jewel of the National Park System. He said national parks, such as Yosemite, are popular destinations for tourists because of what they represent. “The National Park System, from the Lincoln Memorial to Yellowstone, represents the heart and soul of the nation—special places we want to share with all Americans and preserve for future generations.”

The National Park Service works to balance the need for people to experience Yosemite while protecting the park's incredible resources. Some of the most memorable moments for Neubacher come from talking to visitors for whom Yosemite means so much. “This summer I was up at Glacier Point with several friends" said Neubacher. "We were sitting, admiring the clear view of the rugged mountain peaks, and started talking to the woman next to us. She told us she was from Germany and that she had been saving her whole life to come to Yosemite." Despite dedicating his life to national parks, Neubacher still finds himself as excited as a tourist seeing the park for the first time when he explores all Yosemite. “I love to watch birds and other wildlife. So when I found out I was coming to Yosemite, I knew I would see a rare and endangered species—the Great Gray Owl. One evening I had the rare privilege to accompany the park’s incredible ornithologist Sarah Stock, Joe Medley, and a group of researchers on an evening outing to try to see these majestic birds. Seeing one is a rare event, because of the low numbers of this owl in Yosemite. The superintendent said that a female owl flew past the group and landed in a tree. She sat there for a moment and then suddenly swooped down into the meadow and came up with a gopher. "I was so excited my heart was pounding the entire time," said Neubacher. "Parks create opportunities for special things to happen, they provide memorable experiences for us that touch our hearts.”

Wet Spring, View from the Swinging Bridge - Franka Gabler©

It’s hard to think of California and not associate it with the water. Madera County once again has all for which California is known, with several popular lakes enticing visitors. Bass Lake is perhaps the most well known, having played host to countless vacations, special events and even a few movie productions. The sparkling blue water surrounded by pine trees makes for a beautiful sight. Fishing, boating, skiing, wakeboarding and just about any other aquatic sport or activity you could think of can be found in abundance. If you’re looking to get out on the water but don’t have your own vessel, you can rent anything from a PWC on up to a pontoon boat at three different businesses on the water. Beautiful beaches attract families looking to take the iconic summer vacation, as nothing is more “Americana” than kids playing in the water while dad grills lunch on the barbecue. Enjoy the comfortable waters at popular spots such as Falls Beach, where the water comes in to Bass Lake cascading down a rock formation, or find your own private spot to make your own memories. There is plenty to do off the water as well. There are numerous events throughout the year such as craft fairs and weekly farmer’s markets in the summer. Scenic hiking trails offer beautiful views of the surroundings such as the Way of the Mono trail, an easy hike with the reward of a panoramic spread of Bass Lake before you. Photo tip: The best photo opportunities from this location are in the afternoon hours, as the sun will be in the foreground in the morning hours. For those who want to stay close to the water, it is quite easy at Bass Lake, because just about anything you could need is located moments from shore. From lodging to dining to shopping, it’s all located at Bass Lake. Choose from rustic camping, a cozy cabin, vacation home rental or full service resort, all at the lake. Dining options are just as plentiful, as you can enjoy good ‘ole down-home cooking to a gourmet dinner paired with local wines. The wildlife is another attraction for a lot of people. The lake is home to a population of Bald Eagles, always an exciting site for visitor and locals alike. You can also find deer, squirrels and even the occasional bear has been known to frequent the lesser-populated areas. Bass Lake is far from Madera County’s only popular lake. Millerton Lake, just a short drive east of Madera, is a popular State Recreation Area with excellent fishing, boating and swimming, and a great place to visit if you’re exploring the valley’s numerous attractions. If you prefer your lakes to be in the wilderness, then try Redinger or Mammoth Pool Reservoir. Both of these lakes are located along the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway, and are breathtakingly beautiful. They are also off the beaten path, so you can sometimes quite literally have the lake to yourself as you enjoy the beauty. Merced River, Wawona - Debra Sutherland©

Few things can be more romantic than a couple confirming their lifelong commitment beneath the beautiful waterfalls of Yosemite National Park. Perhaps that’s why so many weddings are performed in the popular national park. There are numerous scenic places in which weddings can be performed. One amazing spot is the overlook at Glacier Point, with all of Yosemite Valley spread out before the Waterwheel Falls - Michael Ambrose© couple in a perfect metaphor for the happy life ahead of them. The Yosemite Chapel is another beautiful location, framed by the towering pine trees and even more magnificent granite cliffs of the valley. You can find the permit and pricing information for your Yosemite wedding at www.nps.gov/yose/planyourvisit/weddings.htm. Yosemite isn’t the only popular wedding spot in the region, however. From the valley floor to the Sierra Nevada, the romance of Madera County inspires many to come and say “I do.” Outdoor locations are a common theme in Madera County weddings, as the beautiful scenery is inescapable throughout. Appellation California in Madera has become a popular wedding venue. The wine-tasting room is located on a sprawling green lawn, with seemingly endless rows of vineyards around it. The massive oak tree and park-like setting have played host to several ceremonies, and are becoming more and more popular as the word spreads. Bass Lake is another favorite wedding location. Ceremonies have been held right on the shore at recreation areas as well as at the famous Pines Resort, Forks Resort and Miller’s Landing. Each provides beautiful locations as well as the other amenities necessary to make a wedding perfect. Some people prefer the solace and peacefulness of a wedding in the forest. Paradise Springs is the ideal location for someone looking for that. Located in the Sierra National Forest, it is a stone’s throw from the Nelder Grove of Giant Sequoias and minutes from Oakhurst. The luxurious cabins amid lofty pines next to babbling brooks create a setting of romance that will make the bride the envy of the wedding party. The possibilities are endless. From orchards and vineyards to meadows and forests, the romance of Madera County will make the perfect setting as a couple in love starts on their journey together. Contact the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau to receive a wedding planner packet to get started on your journey today. Chilnualna Falls - Nancy Robbins©

History

Mariposa Grove Museum Nancy Robbins©

The history of Madera County is rich and storied with tales of gold miners heading out west hoping to strike it rich, loggers felling trees to fuel the industrial revolution, and farmers working soil so rich, all you needed was a few seeds and some water. These stories and more are told – and shown – at museums and attractions throughout California’s Gateway to Yosemite. Turn-of-the-century life is on display at the Madera County Historical Society’s museum, located in a century old courthouse in Madera, which illustrates the impact the lumber industry played in the formation of the county. Several other museums can be found as you head east. In Raymond, the Charles Miller House, built in 1886, answers the question of why between 1886 and 1946, it was said “All roads lead to Raymond.” This board-and-batten homestead is listed in the California Registry of Historic Places. The Coarsegold Historic Museum is a collection of artifacts and buildings that date back to the 1800’s, showcasing life during that time period in this gold rush town.

Madera County Museum - Victoria Hughes©

Oakhurst has several museums. Fresno Flats Historic Village and Park recaptures the flavor of 19th Century life in Oakhurst, known at the time as Fresno Flats. Also in Oakhurst is the Wild Wonderful King Vintage Museum, which highlights the ever-changing world of fashion. Collections include men's, women's and children’s clothing as far back as the 1700’s, as well as military uniforms and more. The Little Church on the Hill was the first church in Fresno Flats, dating back to the 1850s. It is a popular spot for photography in the area. Kids can explore at the Children’s Museum of the Sierra, also in Oakhurst. This museum provides hands-on exhibits encouraging kids, and their parents, to learn through doing. Tribal culture is on display at the Sierra Mono Indian Museum in North Fork. The museum has a wide selection of Indian arts and explores Native American history and culture. It also features authentic wildlife dioramas depicting regional animals and more. Head up north on Highway 41 to Fish Camp to explore the Thornberry Museum, part of the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad. There you will find actual equipment used by loggers more than 100 years ago on the very mountains traversed by the railroad today.

Ross Cabin - Gay Abarbanell©

Explore each of these museums to uncover a history that is exciting and enveloping. Many of these historic locations offer special events that bring to life the history shown inside. To find out more, contact the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau or visit our Calendar of Events at www.YosemiteThisYear.com or www.VisitMaderaCounty.com.

Whether you’re exploring the valley floor or hiking through the high country of the Sierra Nevada, you’ll quickly learn one truth about Madera County: it is teeming with life.

Numerous species of both plants and animals make Madera County their home. From the smallest rodent to trophy deer, the animal species are abundant. The state animal, the Black Bear, makes its home throughout the region. Other large animals such as bighorn sheep, mule deer and coyotes are also common, and can be seen throughout the county. Of course, squirrels, raccoons, skunks and even opossum are other common animals. Bobcats and even mountain lions are also known to live in the region, though their shyness makes them a less common sight. Other rare animals include Ring Tailed Cats, Muledeer buck - Nancy Robbins© Marmots and Pacific Fishers. Catching a glimpse of one of these elusive animals is something special. Be sure to bring a camera to show off your lucky find to jealous friends back home. Numerous birds are found throughout the region. Keep an eye out for brightly-colored Stellar’s Blue Jays and Mountain Bluebirds. Look for the iridescent purple flash of a Rufous Hummingbird, or the vivid yellow plumage of the Western Tanager. These are just a small sample of the birds found throughout the region, not including the many Black Bear - Nancy Robbins© mighty raptors. The Great Horned Owl makes its home in the region, as well as Peregrine Falcons and various hawks and eagles. Whether you’re a member of your local chapter of the Audubon Society or just someone who enjoys wildlife, you’ll enjoy the diversity found in Madera County. Trail ride - Ron Hendershott©

One of the great aspects to Madera County cuisine is the bounty of locallygrown ingredients. The inclusion of seasonal, organic elements in to recipes is a rapidly growing trend in the restaurant industry, a trend on which Madera County restaurants are on the leading edge. Many times, ingredients go from field to plate in the same day, offering the most fresh and flavorful dishes one can imagine. These local ingredients give rise to diverse options throughout Madera County. Additionally, Madera County restaurants represent the wide array of diverse cultures that have made their way to the region over the decades. One restaurant in which this is evident is Erna’s Elderberry House, located in Oakhurst. Erna’s is central California’s only five-star restaurant and has been a fixture in Madera County for nearly 30 years. The beautiful restaurant combines the scenic beauty of the surrounding Sierra Nevada with European-inspired décor and menu, with strong influences from proprietor Erna Kubin-Clanin’s Austrian roots. As such, Erna’s Elderberry House has attracted numerous celebrities, food enthusiasts and more with her award-winning fare. The Narrow Gauge Inn is another well-known restaurant featuring long-time favorite American-style options pleasing to any palate. Located in Fish Camp next door to the popular Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad, many a passenger has come away pleased with the delicious dining options offered by this cozy, cottage-style dining room. Each area of Madera County has culinary treasures waiting to be discovered. From mouth-watering burgers at The Forks in Bass Lake, a delicious dinner at Miller's Landing to delicious lamb shanks at The Vineyard in Madera and everywhere in between, a culinary adventure awaits in Madera County. Designated pull-outs provide stellar views of waterfalls, domes and canyons of the high country.
