As a professional travel blogger, I had experienced Yosemite many times. The park is an icon in California and the United States, and garners tremendous amounts of well-deserved attention. It was only after looking more closely at the surrounding area that I learned of the many treasures that exist in the gateway region as well. That’s when I learned about the Fossils to Falls Trail, promoted by the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau. The Fossils to Falls Trail highlights some truly wonderful attractions and activities in the most popular entrance to Yosemite, the southern gateway of Madera County. So I took it upon myself to take time throughout the year to journey along the Fossils to Falls Trail and explore what the region has to offer. The result is that I found out that what they say is true. It’s not just about the destination, but the journey that makes the trip special. I hope you enjoy reading about my travels on this blog as much as I enjoyed writing about them. Perhaps you’ll be inspired to take to the trail as well. Who knows, maybe we’ll run in to each other out there. Victor Burrows

Any other time, I’d have been nervous to see that many cattle heading down a city’s main street. However at the annual Chowchilla Stampede Cattle Drive, it’s a welcome sight. Each April, the Chowchilla Stampede takes over the fairgrounds with exciting rodeo action. The Stampede is the kickoff for the event, where Robertson Boulevard, a scenic street framed by towering palm trees, is filled with well over 100 steers herded down the road by professional cowboys. It makes for a memorable parade and a great way to start several days of rodeo action that celebrate Chowchilla’s Western heritage. JARROD LYMAN

FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 2: Fossil Discovery Center of Madera County, Chowchilla, CA
The Fossil Discovery Center of Madera County in Chowchilla certainly makes an impression. As you walk through the door, you’re greeted by a life-sized skeleton of a Colombian Mammoth. These creatures once roamed the area in giant herds. Larger than the more well-known Woolly Mammoth, these beasts could stand as high as 14 feet tall. Add in the Sabre-Toothed Cat, Short Faced Bear (the largest bear to ever walk the Earth), Dire Wolf and several other specimens on site, and it’s fair to say you wouldn’t want to be around in the Pleistocene era.
FOSSIL LOVER Visitor since 1962
They are also bringing back the old Mammoth Orange there. Soon it will be a full service concession stand just like there used to be up and down Highway 99!
All of these remains were found right on-site, making this a truly special museum. They have mock digs for kids, and actual paleontologists on staff you can talk to, or watch them as they make new fossil discoveries in the lab. The museum certainly was a great way to kick off my “mammoth” adventure.
Can’t wait!

FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 3: Madera Wine Trail
Many people are surprised to learn that Madera County is the oldest wine producing region in the state. The countless acres of vineyards you see throughout the county grow grapes for some of the biggest names in American wines. But many of those grapes are used to make wines right here in Madera County that are earning increasing distinction above their better-known competitors' brands. The result is the 13 family owned wineries of the Madera Wine Trail. Each winery has a veritable treasure of awards for the numerous varieties of wines. (Granted some would say the wines are the real treasure. I’m inclined to agree.) While most wineries have tasting rooms open, the three “Wine Trail Weekends” held each February, May and November, attract the most patrons. Even during these popular events, the wineries retain their small charm, still granting enthusiasts the chance to interact directly with the winemaker to share not just their creations, but their passion for the wines.

FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 4: Oakhurst
There’s always talk about interactive technology being at the forefront of entertainment, but honestly the most fun I’ve had is the good old-fashioned interaction at the melodramas put on by the Golden Chain Theatre in Oakhurst and Squirrel Cage Theatre in North Fork. Both groups are comprised of talented people who thoroughly enjoy putting on a show and that love shines through in their performances. In a world where “interactive” means you can comment on a blog (please keep doing that on my mine, by the way) these talented players remind us when interactive (and social media for the matter) meant interacting with people in a social setting. And you know what, it still holds up today! As you tour the Fossils to Falls Trail, I recommend taking in a show. It’s good, old-fashioned fun that makes great memories. I LOVE going to the shows at the Golden Chain Theatre and Squirrel Cage Theater! MELODRAMATIC The mountains Visitor since 1990 certainly have some very talented actors and actresses, so the shows are always a lot of fun. And the Grub Gulch Grannies are hilarious!

FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 5: Madera
The fertile soil of Madera County grows many things. Nuts, fruits and vegetables are all grown here in abundance, feeding the country and the world. Another great benefit of the prolific produce is the agritourism opportunities. Stores specialize in showcasing the fruits – and nuts – of the farmers’ labors, such as Home Grown Cellars and Valley Pistachio in Madera. Restaurants highlight the local produce so fresh that often times it goes from field to plate in the same day. The most fun, however, are the events. The Pomegranate Celebration and Festival, celebrates Madera’s importance to this historic fruit that is just being rediscovered for its health benefits and numerous applications. The annual Pomegranate Celebration and Festival takes place at the end of October and beginning of November each year, and offers some great ways to get to know this super fruit. www.pomegranatefestival.com.

FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 6: Museums
There is so much history throughout the area that I spent an entire day taking it in as I browsed the collections of the Consortium of Southern Yosemite Museums. I really got an idea of what it was like as a gold miner or logger at the Thornberry Museum and experienced Native American Culture at the Sierra Mono Museum. Kids were engaged and learning while having fun at the Children’s Museum of the Sierra while the massive collection of historic clothing at King’s Vintage Museum really illustrates how much things have changed. I really enjoyed the museums, and encourage people who travel the Fossils to Falls Trail to check them out.

FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 7: Fish Camp, Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad
Few sounds are as iconic as a train. You can hear that sound still today in Fish Camp at the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad. A pair of authentic Shay locomotives take you on a ride back in time as you travel four miles through the Sierra National Forest just south of Yosemite National Park. One of the engines, number 15, celebrates its centennial this year, a milestone few other attractions can ever boast. The railroad also hosts special events, birthday parties and, during the summer, offers the “Moonlight Special” where you can enjoy a delicious BBQ dinner, ride the train and share songs around a roaring campfire framed by towering pines. While there, browse the well-stocked gift and bookstore, and take in a goldpanning lesson, where your guaranteed to find real gold. It’s certainly one of the biggest hoots (or is that “toots”) that I've had along We were just up there for the Fossils to Falls Trail. the moonlight special. What

As you make your way on the Fossils to Falls Trail, you’ll find yourself at the Chukchansi Gold Resort and Casino, a place that seems as if somehow a small slice of Las Vegas was transported to Coarsegold. Not only does this casino, operated by the Picayune Rancheria of Chukchansi Indians, have full Vegas-style gaming, but a wide array of dining options while viewing the gorgeous foothills of Madera County. If you find yourself looking for a little nightlife excitement on your trip, then this is the ideal stop along your journey.

The Coarsegold Rodeo takes place the first weekend each May, has been a tradition here since 1952. It attracts some of the most talented rodeo cowboys and cowgirls out there, and the rodeo grounds really are gorgeous as well, with beautiful views of the foothills. Perhaps the most unique event, however, is the annual Coarsegold Tarantula Festival. The eight-legged creatures are celebrated residents of Coarsegold, coming out of hiding each fall for the mating season. This festival celebrates the emergence with hairiest leg contests, baking contests, costume contests, tarantula races and more. The festival takes place the last Saturday of October and is a lot of fun for the whole family - assuming no one suffers from arachnophobia. But even then I … I mean “they” … have a good time.

FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 10: Oakhurst
Madera County has a long history, back to the mid 1800’s. Sometimes it’s hard to imagine what things would be like that long ago, but Fresno Flats Historic Village and Park really bring it to life. Fresno Flats is built around two homes that date back to the 1870’s, both of which are designated by the State of California as Points of Historical Interest. As you walk through the doors, it’s almost as if they were portals to another time; the history is everywhere. I started with a self-guided tour but decided to stay for one of the guided excursions through the park as the docents knowledge was incredible. The tour was fun and very insightful. They also host events throughout the year, including a Ragtime and Vintage Music Festival each February and Mountain Heritage Days in September; definitely worth another trip.
FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 11: Ahwahnee
Ahwahnee is a small town big on hospitality and is best known for its bed-and-breakfasts, and inns. Located on Highway 49, known as the Golden Chain Highway and nestled in the Sierra Nevada foothills, Ahwahnee is home to half a dozen B&Bs and lodges. Staying at one of these inns gives guests first-hand experience of nature and true mountain-area hospitality as they enjoy delicious breakfasts, beautiful scenery and caring, hospitable hosts. You’ll be only minutes from Yosemite’s southern entrance but a world away from all your cares.

FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 12: North Fork
North Fork is a charming small town located in the exact geographic center of California. Despite being in the middle of it all, this community maintains that smalltown feel that so many people miss in today’s America. While history is evident throughout town, perhaps nowhere is it more honored than the tribal culture on display at the Sierra Mono Indian Museum. One of the few museums in the country that is operated by a tribe, it showcases the rich history of the Mono people who have lived in this area for centuries.
The community of North Fork was founded by the logging industry as lumberjacks once worked the mountains in the area. Today few logging operations remain active, but the way of life remains with events like the annual Loggers Jamboree. Taking place the first weekend each July, the Jamboree pits amateur and professional loggers against each other in contests designed to show off strength, stamina and skill. From hot-saws to tree felling, axe throwing and more, the two-day competition is a thrill. It’s a fun way to see what life was once like in these mountains and a great way to earn respect for the men and women who still make their living the hard way.
That history is still practiced to this day, as each Thursday tribal elders gather at the museum to weave baskets as their ancestors did so many years before. It’s a special experience to see such time-honored traditions continue, making North Fork a must-see along the Fossils To Falls Trail. ROGER ROBINETTE YOSEMITETHISYEAR.COM • YSVB@YOSEMITETHISYEAR.COM

FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 14: Bass Lake
While aquatic activities are plentiful at Bass Lake, many people also come for the fun things you can do on the shore. Each summer there is a well-stocked Farmer’s Market that takes place in The Pines Village on Wednesday evening. Fresh produce, artisan foods and more are a great draw for foodies. Events like the Bass Lake Classic Triathlon, annual Christmas Tree Lighting or Bass Lake Home Tour are perfect examples of the lake’s appeal to a diverse array of people.
PHOTO: ANNIE STARKEY
Speaking of shopping, The Pines Village is also host to numerous boutiques offering everything from gifts to jewelry, art and more. There are several scenic hiking trails around Bass Lake as well, taking guests to beautiful spots such as Angel Falls, or a scenic lookout on the Way of the Mono Trail that offers a stunning panoramic of Bass Lake. The ample activities both on and off the water prove why Bass Lake is such a popular stop along the Fossils to Falls Trail.

There are so many amazing hotels, cabins, bed-and-breakfasts and just about any other type of lodging property you can think of along the Fossils to Falls Trail. But sometimes, you just gotta sleep beneath the stars. Fortunately, there are ample places to do so. My personal favorite was Rock Creek along the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway, but there are many others. From rustic to full service, the type of sites varies as well. Do yourself a favor and try it at least once when you’re on the Trail. I know I’m glad I did.

FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 16: Sierra Vista Scenic Byway
Yosemite truly is a unique destination, but today I drove along what can only be described as a close relative to the much more well-known national park. The Sierra Vista Scenic Byway is a 100-mile drive through some of the most amazing scenery imaginable. Often described as a “Secret Yosemite,” far fewer people take advantage of this amazing area. Starting in North Fork, the byway winds its way through the Sierra Nevada from a little over 2,000 feet in elevation to well over 7,000. Expansive views of granite peaks, a boulder looking like a massive golf ball perched on a tee by some unknown giant, lush meadows and even a grove of Giant Sequoia beloved by John Muir himself are just some of the sites along this epic trek. Be sure to bring your camera and fresh batteries; you’ll need them for this journey.

Day 18: All Seasons
Yosemite is a bit of a contradiction. It's a land of permanence with its iconic granite features, but also a land of change as the scenery varies from season to season. One of the most memorable ways to experience Yosemite is to visit each season throughout the year. Come during winter and you’ll have the park almost to yourself when new snow blankets the valley floor and drapes over Half Dome. Return for spring as the thaw creates unique conditions such as the famed “frazil ice” and the waterfalls begin to thunder with melting snow from the high country. See the park in the summer when everything is thriving, animals are out and about and the warm sun caresses your face on a brisk hike. Then experience fall as the leaves take on vivid hues, and brisk mornings help you to reenergize and entrance your soul. Only then will you truly realize that Yosemite is a destination “For all Seasons.”

FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 19: Fish Camp
So many people visit the region during the summer, but they truly miss something special by not scheduling a visit during the winter. Fish Camp is a favorite for those who have discovered wintertime activities here. The Tenaya Lodge offers snowshoeing, crosscountry skiing, ice skating and more. There is something truly special gazing at a forest blanketed in snow as you enjoy a luscious hot-chocolate and a roaring fire. When planning your vacation, consider a wintertime retreat to this wonderland in the snow. It’s an adventure you won’t soon forget. Winter is my favorite time in the park. Everything is quieter and time seems to stand still. There is something magical SNOWBUNNY about Yosemite in Visitor since 2010 the snow.

FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 20: Raymond
Raymond is a unique small town which has retained its historic feel. Located in the foothills east of Madera, Raymond was once the last stop along the only route to Yosemite. Countless historic figures stopped in Raymond on their way to Yosemite, including President Theodore Roosevelt. The Charles Miller House, built in 1886, showcases the town’s history. It's said that “all roads lead to Raymond,” which is explained at this board-and-batten structure named as a California Historic Place of Interest in 2008.

FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 21: Exploring the Sierra Arts Trail
Eastern Madera County is home to more artists per capita than anywhere else in the country. With the inspiration to be found in the scenic beauty of the region, that’s certainly easy to believe, but the biggest proof can be found at the annual Sierra Art Trails open-studio tour that takes place each October. Every year more than 100 artists will display their works at homes, studios, businesses and more. Just about every medium you have heard of, and possibly a few you haven’t, can be found on this epic journey through the region. Breath taking photography, inspired sculpture, paintings and so much more are on display. It’s an amazing display of talented artists, and it’s event not to be missed along the Fossils to Falls Trail.

Day 22: Critters
I encountered so many different animals on my journeys that I quickly lost count. But each time, it was a special experience. From a solitary coyote that took a moment from hunting groundhogs outside of Madera to watch me go past, to the mother bear teaching her cubs how to forage in Yosemite, each was a moment that will stick with me. Make sure you keep your camera handy as you travel along the Fossils to Falls Trail. There were many times I wasn’t quick enough to capture the animal, but few times I did get wonderful shots. Even if you’re not a Bird watching is a real shutterbug, keep your eyes peeled for the treat here. From the wildlife. There’s a lot of rare animals that Bald Eagles at Bass are a treat to see. FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 23: Weddings
Through my travels along the Fossils to Falls Trail, I met a lot of couples who were in the area for their wedding or honeymooning. For a moment, I thought this was interesting, until I realized the simple reason why: The area is amazingly beautiful and makes the perfect romantic setting for saying “I do.”
ANNIE STARKEY
SWEET DREAMS CAKERY
Just as the scenery varies drastically along the trail, so did the tastes of couples looking for that ideal setting. Whether they were exchanging vows with a backdrop of a lush vineyard, or at the popular chapel in Yosemite Valley, many couples love the region so much they felt it the perfect location to profess their love for each other. Options abound if you’re one of those planning a wedding. Perhaps you will be moved to say “I do” here too. We went to Crab Cakes for lunch in Oakhurst and tried Sweet Dreams Cakery’s dessert … YUM! CLASSIC GAL
They’ve won lots of awards for their wedding cakes too.

FOSSILS TO FALLS BLOG Day 24: Mammoth
While it’s only 40 or so miles as the crow flies, clear on the other side of the Sierra Nevada off Hwy 395 is a unique formation isolated from the rest of Madera County but truly imagination-triggering as it is like no place on Earth.
COURTESY OF MAMMOTH LAKES TOURISM
The Devils Postpile is a basalt formation that looks like a setting from a science fiction movie, almost as if it is the ruin of some advanced alien civilization that left their mark here eons ago. From the ground, octagonal granite spires reach up to the sky, creating a plateau of almost supernatural design. From the top, it appears as if someone laid a stone floor with impossible precision. It’s an amazing place, and a great finish to the Fossils to Falls trail.
WANDERING KNIGHT
Visitor since 1984
Wow … what a great find. We had plans to see Devils Postpile and hike to Rainbow Falls but we came across another treasure in the Eastern Sierra Nevada - Reds Meadows Resort and Pack Stations. I saw so many clear streams and lakes among so many trees … a true wilderness. It’s a perfect place to get away.
JULIE FULLMER
COURTESY OF MAMMOTH LAKES TOURISM
