Chowchilla The western way of life is still alive and well in Chowchilla. Each year the annual Chowchilla Stampede, a large, five-day rodeo kicks off with a massive cattle drive down the city’s main street. Chowchilla’s history goes even further back than that at the Fossil Discovery Center, south of town. This museum showcases the fossilized remains of Colombian Mammoths, Saber-toothed Cats and other animals found right there on-site, that all lived in the area more than 450,000 years ago. For something more current, visit the Madera County Fair each year at the fairgrounds in Chowchilla. The fair features big-named acts, exciting carnival rides and more each May.

Faces of Tourism: Blake Bufford Most paleontologists have to go to remote regions to follow their science. For Blake Bufford, who was born and raised in Madera, the discovery of the largest Pleistocene fossil bed in the western United States in Chowchilla is a truly unique and rare opportunity to work in his own backyard. “I was always interested in fossils and generally intrigued by things from the past,” he said. “I think the Fossil Discovery Center and dig site has more meaning because I grew up in the valley and the fact that all these animals, all these remains were found in my neighborhood makes it a little more personal and interesting.” Bufford has been working at the dig site since 1993 and can be found at the Fossil Discovery Center sharing his passion with guests. “The best part is sharing with the kids who come in. Some people have a favorite spot or activity where they live. Supervisor Frank Bigelow enjoys the variety of Madera County.

“We have a great life, a diversity of life. That’s what’s exciting about Madera County.“ Bigelow, a rancher from the small town of O’Neals, relishes the history of the region. At the same time, he is proud that the communities have progressed without losing their identity. “We’ve evolved, changed, diversified. Along the way with all of these changes, the community hasn’t lost its traditional values and history. Many ranchers, early settlers whose families are still here after many generations, exist and carry on the traditions that have been handed down.” From older communities like Raymond to newer towns such as Madera Ranchos and everywhere between, Supervisor Bigelow says the old combined with new creates lasting traditions to be shared with visitors, creating special experiences for them.

Madera Ranchos

Madera Ranchos is a small community in Western Madera County. This town is in the heart of the county’s agricultural industry but also has a Hollywood connection that many find surprising. Jackie Gleason of The Honeymooners fame and Jack Haley who played The Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz founded the community. Many of the streets bear the names of their celebrated friends such as Caron, Gabor and Loren Way. Throughout the town and beyond you will see ample farmland. Nearly 664,000 acres, more than half of the county, are devoted to farming. Almonds, pistachios and grapes are the top crops, with many more grown in Madera County and sent out to the rest of the country and beyond.

One could say that Madera County Supervisor David Rogers’ life is on the rocks.

Rogers is an avid rock climber, having scaled the most famous locations in Yosemite and Madera County. Supervisor Rogers' first climb was 15 years ago, and it ignited a new passion. “It was 30 feet, not that big. But it took everything I had mentally. “We began to name some of our own climbs in the area of Jackass Rock on the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway.” Those climbs have special meaning for him, as they have created family traditions. “We made a ritual of taking my sons up and rapelling off of Jackass Rock in the full moon.” If you’re hanging around the rocks in Madera County, keep an eye out for Supervisor Rogers. Perhaps he’ll show you a few of his special climbing spots. 5

Named after one of the many indigenous tribes that lived in the area, Ahwahnee (uh-wah-nee) is a small town located in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada. Located just half an hour from the southern entrance to Yosemite, Ahwahnee is known for its charming bed and breakfasts, offering couples a romantic retreat or a fun getaway for a family. Enjoy the peaceful surroundings of the mountains and truly get away from it all without being far from all the amenities in this peaceful, mountain town.

Tribal Culture The history of Madera County goes back more than a century with gold miners, loggers and farmers. However, the regionâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s past reaches even further with the numerous tribes of Native Americans who called this area home for centuries. The unique culture of the tribes can be witnessed at museums and special events held throughout the year by each of the people that still live in the region. The Sierra Mono Indian Museum in North Fork, for instance, is one of the few tribal owned-and-operated museums in the country. There you can learn about their past while also seeing many of their customs still practiced today. Both the Mono Indians as well as the Picayune Rancheria of the Chukchansi Indians host annual Pow-Wows that bring in tribes from throughout California and beyond. More than 37,000 acres of Madera County countryside produce varieties of both red and white wine grapes. Many of those grapes found their way in to local wineries and to wineries throughout California. In fact, many of the wineries in the state’s more well-known wine regions buy their grapes from this area, proving that Madera County really is California’s wine country.

When Madera County Supervisor Ronn Dominici has some time to relax, he enjoys sampling the fruits of others' labor: the winegrowers and winemakers of the Madera Wine Trail.

The wineries along the Madera Wine Trail are family-owned-and-operated, giving guests a more authentic experience than other areas. “The small wineries are more personable to the point that when they’re giving samples, it’s the winemaker pouring the sample. That is something that is really special and people like that,” said Dominici. The longtime supervisor said the numerous varieties bring more people to the trail’s special events. “You see more people from out of the county on the trail, and they’re leaving with cases of wine. That’s beautiful.” When out wine tasting, keep an eye out for Supervisor Dominici. Together you can raise a glass in honor of the family wineries along the Madera Wine Trail.

Madera is the seat of the county bearing the same name and serves as the gathering point for the county’s government. This is a role the city is well acquainted with, as Madera has long been the center of the county’s activities throughout its history. Logging companies in the mountains sent the trees felled by lumberjacks to Madera via a more than 50 mile water flume. Farmers had already begun taking advantage of the fertile soil, sending their crops throughout the county and beyond. Quady has become known for its sweet wines that stand out from the more typical varieties found elsewhere. “I think there is a renaissance and resurgence in interest in sweet wines. You’ll notice new people coming in to the wine drinking-market, a lot are the younger crowd. People haven’t been brought up with trying only dry wines, so they’re not afraid to like something different,” he said. Even after more than 30 years in the industry, Blaylock still enjoys pouring at wine tastings and seeing the reaction one of his wines elicits. “When people come by and try Essensia or Elysium their face lights up, and they like it. When not busy handling the affairs of Madera County, Supervisor Max Rodriguez likes gathering with family in the high country in search of rainbow trout.

“We all pack up and take off for a few days to get a good campsite and go fishing. We’ve been doing that for 25 years,” he said.

If one person is catching fish, the others will take up position right next to him as a joke.

Along with two of his nephews and their sons, Rodriquez heads out and enjoys the cool mountain air and family time.

Madera County offers ample angling opportunities, and in turn, the chance for you to start a new family tradition with your loved ones.

“We’ve been very lucky with the fish. We camp, we talk about the old days and have a lot fun,” he said.

Named for the gold found in a nearby stream during California’s gold rush, Coarsegold is a small mountain community known for its Las Vegas style gaming as well as a historic museum, beautiful bed and breakfast and fun events throughout the year. The annual rodeo brings in top-notch competitors from throughout the United States, while the Coarsegold Tarantula Festival honors the eight-legged creatures that live around the community. The annual Peddler’s Fair each Memorial and Labor Day brings in hundreds antique and collectables vendors with unique items, all within the ambiance of a charming, historic town.

Coarsegold Coarsegold holds a popular festival each year in celebration of an unlikely honoree: the tarantula. Tarantulas are common in this area although rarely seen except during the fall months, which is the creature’s mating season. Each October, the amorous arachnids can be found in the area as they crawl out of their homes in search of eightlegged love. Instead of hiding in their homes, local residents welcome the tarantulas’ emergence and celebrate it at the Tarantula Festival, held the last Saturday of every October. There, kids (and curious parents) can learn about how the harmless creatures live and benefit the ecosystem and even hold one, should they feel so inclined. There are also baking contests, a screaming contest, hairiest leg competition for men and women, costume contests for kids and much more. Small towns are known for their unique attributes, and Coarsegold certainly takes that to a new level.

Faces of Tourism: Cox Family When you love what you do, you never work a day in your life. That explains why The Forks Resort has been operated by one family for 71 years. Leslie Cox’s family has been running The Forks since her grandfather purchased it in 1941. He later built a home for his family that is still the residence for Leslie and her husband Ron. Their son Adam works as a manager during his summers off as a special education teacher, and daughter, McKenzie, has now rejoined the business after earning her MBA. “I always knew I would come back. This is home.” Leslie agreed, saying Bass Lake and The Forks has always been home not just for her family, but countless others as well. “We’ve had kids who come back with their children and then their grandkids,” said Leslie. Take to the cool waters of Bass Lake for some fishing, wakeboarding or perhaps a party with friends, but you don’t have a boat. That won’t be a problem, as you can pick up fishing boats, ski boats, pontoons or even personal watercraft at several spots on the lake. Madera County Supervisor Tom Wheeler is a true advocate for the county, but one of his favorite places is the annual Logger’s Jamboree in his home town of North Fork. Wheeler truly has lived the lumberjack lifestyle the event honors. He has won each of the events at least once since he started competing in 1959. He still participates and can be seen in the contestants’ area, always with a smile as he laughs with the other competitors. The annual Logger’s Jamboree highlights his town’s heritage, one of the reasons he supports the event to this day. “It showcases North Fork and what logging is all about. It’s also an exciting competition, showing how logging was done.” When you go to the Logger’s Jamboree, look for the tallest competitor with the biggest smile. That will likely be Supervisor Wheeler, enjoying the living history in his home town of North Fork.

There was a time when there was only one way to get to Yosemite and Raymond was the last stop on that trek. Faces of Tourism: Talking Bear While most of the faces of tourism are welcoming, this one has more of a fierce demeanor, but is loved by locals and visitors alike. The Talking Bear in Oakhurst is a fixture in this foothill community. it’s a landmark people use to help guide visitors to the town, and an attraction that has a tremendous following. Located at the intersection of Highway 41 and Road 426, the Talking Bear has been a mainstay here for more than 55 years. Originally brought here by the Shollenbarger brothers to promote their real estate business, the Talking Bear now lives in front of Century 21 Ditton Realty, regaling all who push the button about the history of bears in Oakhurst. Countless people take their photos with the Talking Bear, and he even has a Facebook page with nearly 5,000 friends. While in Oakhurst, be sure to add your picture to his collection.

Faces of Tourism: Max Stauffer Owning a historic railroad is interesting, but the back story of how a family of Swiss immigrants came to realize the American Dream is even more fascinating.

Max Stauffer was a boy when his family came to the US aboard the Queen Mary in 1950. While hailing from Switzerland, the Stauffers owned several cheese factories in Hungary. After Nazis invaded in 1944 and then the Soviets in 1950, the family decided to come to America. In 1965 they learned about logging equipment for sale. Looking to preserve the history of their new home, they purchased the first of two Shay locomotives, and the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad was born. In addition to maintaining the railroad, Max is the president of the Board of Directors of the Yosemite Sierra Visitors Bureau, and an advocate for tourism throughout the region. But his passion remains in the cab of his historic trains, driving people through time.

Riding the nearly-century-old Shay Locomotives of the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad in Fish Camp is the closest you can get to time travel. These authentic steam engines take guests on a ride through the Sierra National Forest, recreating the history of the lumberjacks who once rode the same rails, logging the forest in the 1800’s and early 1900’s. Each blast from the whistle and ring of the bell calls to young and old who can’t help but smile when they see the trains. The history remains alive at the Thornberry Museum on-site, showcasing actual tools used by lumberjacks at the time. The gold panning operation teaches children how miners in the area once tried to eke out a living as they scoured the land searching for the precious metal. Many people travel to find themselves. When you hear the whistle, you may just find yourself in another era, reliving the past.

Few places can boast as an impressive backdrop for a round of golf as Wawona, the only course in a National Park. Enjoy a relaxing round of nine-hole golf. Faces of Tourism: Burrel “Buckshot” Maier As you drive to Yosemite, stop at the Pioneer History Center in Wawona and you’ll feel as if you’ve been transported through history. Burrel“Buckshot” Maier will be your driver on that journey.

Buckshot is the only stagecoach driver / Park Ranger in all the National Park Service. His 10-minute stage tours, historically accurate to every detail, recreate a section of the trail taken by travelers until 1915. Buckshot believes it’s important to connect people with the history. “You left Wawona at 8 a.m. and arrived in Yosemite at 4 p.m. changing horses four times. Today you make it in 45 minutes to an hour,” says Buckshot. Buckshot has spent the past 35 years driving the stage and recreating turn-of-the-century life at the Pioneer Village. Faces of Tourism: Shelton Johnson With over 100 rangers working inside Yosemite, it takes someone special to be known as the park’s face. Park Ranger Shelton Johnson has achieved just that.

Johnson was heavily featured in a popular 2009 Ken Burns documentary about the National Park system and was seen again by millions on the Oprah Winfrey Show featuring Yosemite. Shelton’s love of Yosemite is strong, as he inspires people to look below the surface. “People don’t love the park, they love the place. The park is a political designation; it’s the place itself that people connect with in a deep, psychological nature. I want people to look beyond the surface beauty to see the much grander, deeper beauty." 36

It’s that habit of looking for the hidden meaning that has helped Johnson bring the story of the Buffalo Soldiers to so many. “There was this history of African American stewardship known to only a handful of people. Now between Ken Burns, Oprah and associated media, now over 75 million people know about them.” By looking at who the Buffalo Soldiers were and connecting that story with visitors, he has restored an important piece of Yosemite history and inspired many. One could easily spend a lifetime in Yosemite and still not see everything this magical place has to offer. Few people have that luxury, however. For those on a tight schedule, here are a few highlights to see in Yosemite in one day.

Start your day in the morning at Mariposa Grove of Giant Sequoias. This stand of stately giants holds some of the most amazing specimens of Giant Sequoia. Afterwards, head over to the Wawona Pioneer Village to get a glimpse of pioneer life in the park. Continue on to Yosemite Valley. You’ll go through Tunnel View, but you’ll also want to stop on your way back in the afternoon for the best photographs. the base of the fall for an amazing if somewhat damp view. From there, head to the heart of the valley. A free shuttle bus takes you from the parking lot to other main icons, like Sentinel Bridge, El Capitan picnic area and Yosemite Falls trailhead. Once you’ve had your fill, head back toward the south entrance, stopping again at Tunnel View for the breathtaking vista. Then continue on to Glacier Point for the most memorable sunset you will ever experience. 37

Faces of Tourism: Vern Black Throughout Madera County you get glimpses of what life was like decades ago. Some people still live that way, such as Vern Black, owner of the Jones Store along the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway.

Black’s family lived at Beasore Meadow for over a century. Sometimes passing cattle ranchers would ask if they had matches or some other item they needed. As a result, they started a store which grew to become a landmark now known for its mouthwatering hamburgers and amazing pie. Often described as a “hidden Yosemite,” the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway is a 100-mile drive through the Sierra National Forest that affords travelers some of the most spectacular views in the region. Starting at 3,000 feet and eventually climbing to more than 7,000, the Byway winds past unique rock formations like Arch Rock and Globe Rock, past vantage points offering sweeping panoramas of the Sierra Nevada like Mile High Overlook and through verdant meadows like Soda Springs and Beasore. Another point of interest is the Jesse Ross Cabin. Built in the 1860’s, this log home is indicative of the pioneering spirit and a testament to the ruggedness of everything they built as it still stands today. One spot you will want to watch for is Eagle Beaks. It's a unique mountain peak shaped like a series of majestic eagles that keep watch over the Byway. While services along the Byway are limited, there are several camping sites along the way. The giants of the Nelder Grove of Giant Sequoia are a hidden gem in the Sierra National Forest, not as well-known as Mariposa or Tuolumne Groves. For many people, however, Nelder Grove is their favorite home of these ancient trees. The Nelder Grove is home to some of the largest Sequoias in the world, including the Bull Buck tree and the Nelder Tree, a colossus even when compared to its neighbors. Walk along the Shadow of the Giants trail and see many Sequoias up close and personal. The Nelder Grove is located off Road 632/Sky Ranch Road, part of the Sierra Vista Scenic Byway. Faces of Tourism: Brenda Negley The towering Giant Sequoias of Nelder Grove are a majestic site. For Brenda Negley, they are something more. Brenda is the camp host at Nelder Grove, continuing a family tradition. Her grandparents, John and Marge Hawksworth, were camp hosts for more than 20 years. Negley assumed the same position as her grandparents two years ago because she loves to share the magic. “You are at-one with the forest here, there’s a peacefulness to it. You can see the big trees and not be surrounded by a lot of people,” she said. Negley is proud of the family connection and feels personally attached to the history of the grove. “There are a lot of hiking trails in Nelder Grove and a lot of history. People are exploring and discovering new things and I’m helping to share that with them. It’s a passion of mine.”

Faces of Tourism: Chris Mariscotti Everything in The Vineyard Restaurant in Madera is local. Local ingredients, local wine and local owner Chris Mariscotti.

Mariscotti is the third member of his family to own and operate The Vineyard, which was opened by his grandfather in 1976. The Vineyard quickly became popular with locals and visitors thanks to the focus on fresh, homegrown ingredients. Produce will often go from field to plate in the same day. “From day one we’ve always tried to highlight local wines and local foods,” he said. “Before it became the industry trend, we’ve selected the best local, inseason ingredients.” Mariscotti, along with the rest of his family, was recently honored by the California Restaurant Association with a Lifetime Achievement Award, celebrating the family’s impact on the restaurant scene. The restaurant continues to enjoy a devoted following and is a family tradition for many diners and will likely remain a family tradition for the Mariscottis as well.

One of the great aspects of Madera County cuisine is the bounty of locally grown ingredients. Faces of Tourism: Rose Wheeler Western Madera County is known for agriculture. The fertile soil of the valley produce not only fruits and vegetables, but inspire beautiful art.

Rose Wheeler moved to Madera from the Bay Area when she retired in the early 90’s. While she had been painting prior, her focus soon shifted from abstracts to capturing the beauty of farmland. “I started painting it because when you live in an area like this and you see so much about the agriculture, it’s what most people survive on. Plus the beauty of the surroundings, and it’s so peaceful to go out in to the fields.” With the Pomegranate Celebration in Madera, Wheeler started painting that versatile fruit. “I’m a texture and color person, I love bright colors in my paintings. Pomegranates definitely fit that,” she said. Wheeler has already created a few pomegranate paintings and will unveil several more for the celebration of Pomegranate.

Faces of Tourism: Jon Bock Madera County has become a thriving art center, as artists are drawn to the region’s natural beauty. Jon Bock has become a strong advocate for the art community and a driving force behind the popular Sierra Art Trails.

Bock moved to Oakhurst in 1989 from Southern California and now owns and operates Stellar Art Gallery in popular Gallery Row in Oakhurst. He strives to connect guests with the local art and artists. “I think visitors are surprised when they come up here, they’re not expecting the level of quality that we have and the number of artists that we have in the region. We get that all the time. They come in and they expect to find ‘tourist stuff’ and they end up finding premier artists and galleries that rival places like Carmel, Santa Fe and Palm Desert.” In a field known for its passion, Bock’s devotion is a binding force behind a strong community.

Yosemite has been called The Range of Light because as the way the sun shines through the clouds and plays off the cliffs, dramatic photographic opportunities are created. Many people are surprised to learn, however, that some of the most amazing photos of the park can be taken at night. One of the most amazing scenes is the “moonbow” created by the full moon shining through the mist of lower Yosemite Falls. The image can only be captured by the proper camera, but the beauty is worth waiting for the right moment. While Nancy Robbins has been a professional photographer for more than 30 years, she’s been fascinated with the art form since she was a child. Nancy won a camera in a contest when she was 11 years old and from that moment, she was hooked.

The scenic beauty of Yosemite and the surrounding area drew her to the region for numerous visits before she made the park her home about 10 years ago. She started out capturing images of the many weddings that take place in the park, but quickly began focusing on the natural beauty of Yosemite. She now takes people on journeys through Yosemite, showing them the best places and times to capture the grandeur of Yosemite through their lens. Faces of Tourism: Brian Allman They say where there’s smoke there’s fire. Around here where there’s fire, there’s CalFire, and likely Captain Brian Allman.

Allman has worked for CalFire since 1980 and has lived in Ahwahnee for his entire life. In fact, Allmans have lived here since 1932, making his task of protecting the residents and visitors here a personal one. “Most of my family lives in the response area. I respond to calls with people I know, family and friends, people I went to school with,” he said. CalFire is known as the state’s fire department, handling every type of emergency call a fire department can. It’s the variety of incidents that keep the job fresh, despite his tenure. “Each call creates its own challenge.” He says he will continue to protect the region, ensuring more people can enjoy the beauty of the Sierra Nevada.
