RECREATION IN A NATURAL SETTING

SILENT VALLEY IS ONE OF THE FINESTprivate resorts in the US. It is dedicated to providing the outdoor-oriented family with an unparalleled camping experience in a natural setting enhanced by the finest recreational features.

Silent Valley is located in a mountain valley at an altitude of 3,500 feet, in the San Jacinto Mountains. The city of Banning is 10 miles away to the north and the resort community of Idyllwild is 16 miles to the south on scenic Highway 243.

There are approximately 460 acres at Silent Valley, with 850 campsites in a wide variety of distinct areas, each having its own special advantages and each offerings a different camping experience. All campsites are capable of accommodating various types of recreational vehicles: 22% are drive-through. Some sites are in wooded areas, which offer a large degree of privacy; others are closer to the "action" near activity centers. Each site has a picnic table and benches, and has access to sanitary refuse containers.

BASS LAKE, WATER SPORTS, SIERRA NATIONAL FOREST

LOCATED NEXT TO BASS LAKEin the Sierra National Forest of Central California, Bass Lake Recreational Resort offers an abundance of activities for the sportsman, nature lover, and sightseer.

Water sport enthusiasts will enjoy boating, water skiing, sailing, and swimming at Bass Lake. Anglers will also find good fishing at the lake as well as at the streams and rivers near the resort.

Bass Lake Recreational Resort is situated in the Sierra National Forest, 1,300,000 acres that encompass almost all of the land between the Yosemite and Kings Canyon National Parks. Bear, beaver, bobcat, coyote, deer, and quail are some of the native wildlife that you will see. Clusters of majestic sequoia trees are hidden deep within the watersheds of the forest, and Nelder Grove near Bass Lake contains one stand of the trees.

The south gate of beautiful Yosemite National Park is near the resort. Here pre-Pleistocene glaciers changed rolling hills and meandering streams into the colossal landscape of today. Much of the mountain region is easily accessible to hikers and motorists using the 196 miles of primary roads and more than 800 miles of trails.

There are many other ways you can see the splendor of Yosemite: half-hour to half-day nature walks are conducted by naturalists year-round, 7-day guided hiking trips, 4 and 6day saddle trips, and a 2-hour tour of the valley from an open tram.

You won’t want to miss the fun of driving your vehicle through the 232-foot California tree in the Mariposa Sequoia Grove in the extreme southern end of the park.

Sightseers will love the Yosemite Falls, especially in May and June when the winter snows are melting and the falls are at their fullest. With a height equal to nine Niagara’s, the Upper Yosemite Fall drops 1,430 feet in one fall. Immediately below, the Lower Yosemite Fall has a modest drop of 320 feet. P. O. SAN TIMOTEO CANYON, YEAR-ROUND FISHING

With 340 acres that range from flat grassy meadows to scenic hiking hills with deer, squirrels, and over 300 types of birds, the resort also boasts three man-made lakes stocked with catfish, bass, and trout for year-round fishing.

The crown jewels of this area’s recreational attractions are the mountain resorts of Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake. Both are within an hour’s drive from the resort, yet are a world away from the life in the valleys. Pine forests, hidden lakes, fabulous vistas, and a range of attractions make this area a vacation wonderland.

Lake Arrowhead is situated in a breathtaking alpine setting. Crisp, cool air and vivid blue skies attract visitors who come to enjoy the water sports, walk the shoreline, or browse in a cluster of shops. Farther to the east lies Big Bear Lake, the largest mountain lake in Southern California, famous for its alpine setting and abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Nearby Redlands, a college town with a wealth of history, offers beautifully restored Victorian mansions and tree-lined streets. The University of Redlands hosts such cultural activities as concerts, ballets, and operas. The city is also home to the San Bernardino Assistencia. Built around 1830 as a branch of the San Gabriel Mission and now restored to its original state, the Assistencia contains a museum that offers insight into mission and ranch life in the 1840’s.

Los Angeles, Disneyland, Knotts Berry Farm, and the Pacific Coast beaches are all about a 90-minute drive from the resort.

To the south is the city of Palm Springs and the many other small desert communities and golf courses that flourish in this vacation mecca.

LAKE BERRYESSA, NAPA VALLEY, SONOMA STATE HISTORIC PARK

LOCATED ON THE SCENIC Putah Creek, this resort is also close to Lake Berryessa, one of the largest freshwater lakes in California. The lake’s 160-mile shoreline provides ample room for fishing, swimming, rowing, sailing, or waterskiing.

The trout fishing is excellent on the resort, which is directly downstream from the fish “drop off” point where the creek is replenished each week.

To the south is the Napa Valley, America’s best known wine region with its 24,000 acres of vineyards. Most of the major wineries are located along Highway 29, as are several small towns, all with shops and restaurants serving fine produce from the surrounding countryside.

Napa, the county seat, lies at the southern entrance to the valley. A self-guided walking tour through the town reveals classic Victorian architecture in many of its homes, inns, restaurants, and antique shops.

Sonoma County, on west of Napa, was settled by a mix of European immigrants, Spanish missionaries, and Mexican soldiers and now serves as a colorful introduction to California’s early history.

The town of Sonoma, the birthplace of the county, is about an hour’s drive from the resort. Its plaza, laid out by the Mexican General Mariano Vallejo in 1835, is surrounded by the largest collection of Mexican-era adobes north of Monterey, including Mission San Francisco de Solano, built in 1823. These structures sit side by side with western-style false-front buildings and Italian basalt structures that today house the Toscano Hotel, the Blue Wing Inn, and Sonoma Barracks. Together with the mission, they form Sonoma State Historic Park.

Sacramento, to the east, is the state capitol, and has a pioneer history that began in 1839 with Captain John A. Sutter, a Swiss immigrant. “Old Town,” the original Gold Rush-era town of Sacramento, is preserved in 28 acres of original brick and masonry buildings along the Sacramento River.

APPLE COUNTRY, SHOPPING, BIG BEAR LAKE

AT AN ELEVATION OF 4,800 feet in the foothills of the San Bernardino Mountains, Oak Glen Retreat is in the heart of California’s apple country. In keeping with the theme of the resort’s location, most of the sites have their own apple trees.

Across the street from the resort is an array of quaint shops and restaurants as well as a children’s petting zoo and museum. During the winter, the resort gets an occasional blanket of snow, making it look like a little Swiss town.

The crown jewels of this area’s recreational attractions are the mountain resorts of Lake Arrowhead and Big Bear Lake. Both are within an hour’s drive from the resort, yet are a world away from the life in the valleys. Pine forests, hidden lakes, fabulous vistas and a range of attractions make this area a vacation wonderland.

Big Bear Lake, closest to the resort, is the largest mountain lake in Southern California, famous for its alpine setting and abundant opportunities for outdoor recreation.

Built around 1830 as a branch of the San Gabriel Mission and now restored to its original state, the Assistencia contains a museum that offers insight into mission and ranch life in the 1840’s.

Yucaipa is a rural town surrounded by farms and orchards, many of which are open to the public and offer special events each fall. The Mousley Museum of Natural History, located on six acres and home to the largest display of seashells in the United States, is the site of the Wildlife Sanctuary and the adjoining Mockingbird Canyon Wildlife Sanctuary.
