ANDERSON RANCH DAM RECREATION AREA
A BEAUTIFUL WILDERNESS AREA and one of the finest fishing lakes in southwestern Idaho are just two of the rewards you’ll be giving yourself when visiting Fort Running Bear.
Fishermen boast that catching 18" to 24" rainbow trout are commonplace at this 40-acre resort. Deer, elk, pheasant, grouse, chukar, and geese are frequently sighted in this snowcapped mountain area, and hunting is offered during appropriate seasons.
At an elevation of 5,000 ft., it should be noted that the nearest grocery store or gasoline station, in Mountain Home, is 23 miles away.
Mountain Home is the site for Mountain Home Air Force Base, home of the nation’s premier air intervention composite wing. See it firsthand at the annual air show each October.
A short drive from the resort is Anderson Ranch Dam Recreational Area where there’s year-round fishing for kokanee and chinook salmon, rainbow trout, and small mouth bass. Below the dam, the South Fork of the Boise River offers blue ribbon fishing, too. Above the dam on the reservoir’s west side are boat launches and a full-service marina.
At the headwaters of the reservoir, you’ll find the former mining communities of Pine and Featherville which offer more fishing along the Boise River. Anderson Ranch Reservoir is popular with water skiers because of the ideal water temperatures and calm waters.
South of Mountain Home off Highway 51 lies a bit of the Sahara on the Snake River — the Bruneau Dunes State Park. Here rise the tallest single-structured sand dunes in America, the largest of which towers 470 feet high.
Considered to be one of the natural wonders of the world, the nearby Shoshone Ice Cave is a lava tube spanning three blocks. The cave breezes with flowing air currents that have formed sparkling icy shapes. The icy floor inside is 1,000 ft. long and eight to 30 feet deep.
