AWESOME NATURAL BEAUTY, EXCELLENT FISHING

AS ITS NAME IMPLIES,Rondout Valley Resort is in a lush valley filled with an abundance of beautiful vegetation. The resort is spread among 180 acres of native trees, including pine and sycamore, that blend together to create an awesome natural beauty.

Two streams that run through the resort provide for some excellent fishing fun and yield trout, pickerel, and other stocked fish. The sound of their rippling waters is also considered to be soothing and relaxing.

The resort is just off U.S. Highway 209 about midway between Ellenville to the south and Kingston to the north.

Here in the Catskills Region you’ll find fish-crowded streams, forested mountains, country wineries, antique trails, Dutch and Huguenot settlements, and lots of other delightful attractions.

Visitors can walk paths where America’s history began… Kingston 1652, New Paltz 1678, and Coxsackie 1663. They can return to the glacial age at Ice Caves Mountain and stroll through Woodstock, the home for half a century to artists, writers, and actors.

Kingston was the first capital of New York State (1777) and now attracts visitors with its restored waterfront, marinas, museums, and shops. The Old Dutch Church, on the National Register of Historic Places, was congregated in 1659 and offers tours. The Senate House in Kingston is a state historic site, and the meeting place of the first New York State Senate in 1777. Hudson and Rondout River cruises begin here, and visitors will find evening sailboat rides, showboat cruises, dinner and brunch cruises, and music and dance cruises.

The Franklin D. Roosevelt National Historic Site is in nearby Hyde Park. Home of the 32nd president, it’s maintained as it was at his death in 1945.

IN THE HEART OF THE ADIRONDACK MOUNTAINS

AMONG THE MAJESTIC PINES AND MAPLES of the Adirondack Mountains, this resort offers a “get-a-way” experience that includes lovely waterfront sites and nearly a mile of river frontage. Staying at Adirondack Adventure Resort—Schroon River not only provides all the comforts of home, it also features fun activities and a close proximity to exciting attractions. Whether you choose to relax or spend your time soaking up local culture, you’ll find your fun here.

Water pursuits abound at this crown jewel of campgrounds. You can rent a canoe for an enjoyable excursion down the beautiful Schroon River or hire nearby outfitters who provide equipment for rafting, tubing and kayaking. If fishing is your pastime du jour, bring a pole to angle for perch, trout, bass and Northern pike. Those who prefer more relaxing endeavors can sunbathe on the beach or opt for a short swim in the river or the resort’s own swimming pool. A game room and adult lounge are also available.

Explore beyond the resort boundaries for hiking and other types of outdoor recreation at the Adirondack Park Preserve, located a few short miles away This park and additional nearby state parks provide ample opportunities for boating, birding, biking and wildlife viewing. Charming communities in the vicinity, such as Lake George, offer a large selection of factory outlets; Saratoga Springs invites you to browse quaint boutiques and dine in fine restaurants. 969E. IN THE FOOTHILLS OF NEW YORK STATE’S Allegany Region, with their own recreation staff and many points of interest in the area, 225-acre Allegany Mountain Resort is a vacation wonderland. The resort is well known for its theme weeks, with special events where you can either watch or take part in the fun and festivities.

Surrounding a pure spring-fed, 66-acre lake, the resort offers swimming beaches, sailing, fishing, and miles of wilderness trails along with the on-site recreational activities. Guests have access to downhill and cross country skiing or the challenging 18-hole golf course at nearby Holiday Valley.

Fine culinary cuisine, antique shops, gift boutiques, trees, and meadows can be found in the Village of Ellicottville. At the B&B Buffalo Ranch, just outside the Village of Ellicottville, you’ll see hundreds of buffalo graze in their natural habitat on New York State’s largest buffalo farm.

At Salamanca, the only city in the world located on an Indian Reservation, the Indian heritage comes alive through the abundance of local artisans who create their traditional arts and crafts. On the Allegany Indian Reservation, near Salamanca, the Seneca-Iroquois National Museum depicts the life and culture of the Iroquois Indians, with emphasis on the Seneca nation.

At nearby Mayville, you can take a step back in time and enjoy a 1-1/2 hour cruise on the Chautauqua Lake aboard the Chautauqua Belle, an old-fashioned paddlewheel steamship.

On your way to the shores of nearby Lake Erie, you’ll see the Chautauqua Gorge and travel through part of the Chautauqua wine country. THEME WEEK FESTIVITIES, SHOPPING, SAILING

NIAGARA FALLS, CASINOS, RESERVATION STATE PARK

IN THE HEART OF NIAGARA COUNTY, Niagara’s Lazy Lakes Resort is just a few minutes’ drive from the Canadian border, Lake Ontario, and world-famous Niagara Falls and Seneca Niagara Casino.

Fine restaurants and golf courses are plentiful in the area, but the big attraction is, of course, Niagara Falls. This thundering wall of water is a wonder of the world. It’s breathtaking by day, by night, from above by helicopter or elevator, from below by catwalk, or by the popular “Maid of the Mist” tour boat.

The Niagara Power Project Visitors Center offers energy exhibits, movies, a history of Niagara Power, and an observation deck with a marvelous view of the gorge. The Aquarium of Niagara Falls, which overlooks the Niagara Gorge, puts on electric eel demonstrations, and hourly dolphin and sea lion shows. More than 2,000 marine specimen include penguins, sharks and lionfish.

At Niagara Reservation State Park, visitors will find Prospect Point and Observation Tower, Cave of the Winds, Goat Island (in the middle of the falls), Terrapin Point, Three Sisters Islands, and Luna Island. Boat cruises are available, and the visitors center displays a “Niagara Wonders” movie and has a gift shop for all the Niagara Falls memorabilia.

Old Fort Niagara in Youngstown saw service under French, English, and American flags, and from July 1 through Labor Day visitors can witness military drills and demonstrations by costumed soldiers.

Our Lady of Fatima Shrine between Lewiston and Youngstown is an outdoor cathedral where visitors can see a dome of translucent glass that depicts the world. The grounds facing the dome form a garden with 100 lifesize Carrara marble statues. There’s also a cafeteria and gift shop. 4312CHURCH ROAD LOCKPORT, NY 14094 (716) 433–2479 • EASTERN TIME

BOATING AND FISHING, SARATOGA, HOWES CAVERN

AT 1,250 FEET ABOVE SEA LEVEL,the spacious campsites at Frosty Acres Camping Resort overlook the CapitalSaratoga Region. The resort’s three spring-fed ponds are inviting to anyone seeking a leisurely day of fishing or boating.

Abundant nearby attractions include the Governor Nelson Rockefeller Empire State Plaza and New York State Museum in Albany, the Baseball Hall of Fame in Cooperstown, the thoroughbred racing excitement of Saratoga, and the Howes Cavern in Howes Cave, New York.

Albany is the capital city of the Empire State and one of the oldest cities in the United States. It was named the capital of New York State in 1797. Because of its riverside location and system of turnpikes that fanned out from the city, Albany was a transportation hub of the northeast, and with the creation of the Erie Canal, Albany’s development as a business and banking center fueled the return to prosperity from the economic doldrums created by the War of 1812.

Here the Empire State Plaza is not only a government complex encompassing a convention center, but also a performing arts center, the New York State Museum, and the world’s largest contemporary art collection.

North of Albany, the nation’s oldest thoroughbred race track, the Saratoga Race Course in Saratoga Springs, runs 24 days of thoroughbred racing each August, and the Saratoga Raceway offers harness racing Feb.-Nov.

Cooperstown, New York, just a short drive west from the resort, is best known as the home of the national Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum. Just as its name implies, it honors baseball’s famous heroes, recalls the game’s greatest moments, and presents sport’s history through artifacts, photographs, and memorabilia.

Howes Cavern was discovered by a local farmer in 1842 when he investigated why his cows were standing out in the hot sun and discovered cold air blowing up from the cavern.

MINNEWASKA STATE PARK, HUDSON VALLEY WINERY

LOCATED HIGH IN THE SCENIC Catskill Mountains, this resort offers the best in family fun. Maple and oak trees, some reaching heights of more than 100 feet, adorn the countryside around the resort, providing a scenic vacation spot. A pond and nearby river provide fishing and canoeing at this 235-acre facility that features excellent tent camping. Recreation opportunities include horseback riding, golfing and much more.

Area attractions feature the Hudson Valley Winery, Ice Cave Mountains, Museum Village, Monticello Raceway, county fairs and historic sites, apple picking orchards, golf courses, glider rides, and fine restaurants.

Visitors can plan day trips to nearby Minnewaska State Park, which is situated in Ulster County on the dramatic Shawangunk Mountain ridge. The rugged and rocky terrain is blanketed by dense hardwood forest encircling two lakes. Clear streams notch into valleys, chisel into sheer cliffs and eventually emerge in waterfalls. Recreational opportunities here include hiking, biking, horseback riding, cross-country skiing, swimming, picnicking, and boating. 538MT. VERNON RD. WURTSBORO, NY 12790 (845) 888–2161 EASTERN TIME
