POPULAR FISHING DESTINATION, NATIVE AMERICAN HISTORY
BUILT AT THE SITE OF A FORMERNative American village, Bear Cave Resort is a riverfront property located about 20 miles east of Lake Michigan that is popular with fishermen.
Buchanan, the Red Bud City built along the St. Joseph River, is known for its beautiful blossoms, camping, golf, skiing, and year-round fishing. The area is the home of Fernwood Nature Center, a 100-acre nature preserve offering special programs and tours throughout the year. A restored gristmill and Bear Cave serve as reminders of the history of this colorful city.
Bear Cave is on the Red Bud Trail near the resort. Its historic events include serving as a dwelling of Potawatomi Indians, playing a part in the underground slave-freedom movement, and as a setting for filming the Train Robbery movie. Visitors can see traces of Native American artifacts, flowstone, petrified leaves, and vegetation.
The Tabor Hill Winery and Restaurant in Buchanan offers wine-tasting and dining in a scenic setting — rolling hills, fragrant vineyards, and an uninterrupted view of the Lake Michigan sand dunes.
Warren Dunes State Park on the shore of Lake Michigan and Warren Woods State Park are both popular spots for visitors.
North of the resort, Berrien Springs, also located along the St. Joseph River, offers a diversity of year-round fishing activities. The city is surrounded by orchards and vineyards, which produce award-winning wines. This scenic community is the site of state and national registered historic landmarks including Andrews University and the 1839 Courthouse Museum.
The Lemon Creek Fruit Farms, Vineyard and Winery here has been family owned and operated for more than 100 years. Enjoy free wine tasting and tours, and pick your own fresh fruits in season.
Notre Dame University is about 35 miles south in South Bend, Indiana.

23 AREA CHAMPIONSHIP GOLF COURSES, FISHING
SOUTH OF GAYLORD, IN NORTHERN LOWER Michigan, Benjamins Beaver Creek Resort is less than an hour from the famous Mackinac Bridge, which leads to the island area and Upper Michigan.
During the winter months Beaver Creek is just minutes from some of the best skiing in the state. Whether you prefer to strap on cross-country skis or take to the challenging slopes, you’ll find the area accommodating with five major ski resorts.
In the summer, golfers take delight in being in the Heart of America’s Summer Golf Capital, composed of 23 championship courses. Fifteen courses are within 35 miles of the resort and all 23 can be reached in an hour or less. Each course blends expert design with spectacular settings for a unique golfing experience in Michigan’s rolling woodlands.
Spring brings morel mushrooms, and in the fall, well, the colors will take your breath away!
While the places to visit and things to do abound in this charming state, visitors often like to stay close to Gaylord and the resort.
Gaylord is an Alpine Village that has a long-term relationship with Pentresina, Switzerland, her proclaimed sister city. Countless examples of Swiss theme architecture grace the thoroughfares of this north country jewel.
The people here even model themselves after the Swiss with a reputation for hospitality, accord among people of many ethnic backgrounds, and plain good fun.
Just eight miles north of Gaylord is the village of Vanderbilt and the Pigeon River Country State Forest, one of Michigan’s most picturesque wilderness areas. The acknowledged “Gateway to the Pigeon River Country State Forest,” the area is the home of the Dept. of Natural Resources headquartered in the 83,000-acre forest. Among the unique attractions is the Witness Tree, a virgin tree marked during the original land survey of Michigan in 1850. 5004WEST OTSEGO LAKE DRIVE GAYLORD, MI 49735 (989) 732–2459 EASTERN TIME

Waldenwoods is also a fairy-tale venue for conferences and weddings with its charming Cromaine Lodge on the lake. Several locations serve as ceremony settings, indoor or out.
Nearby Ann Arbor, Detroit, Flint and Lansing offer more opportunities for both culture and recreation. Ann Arbor boasts “a small-town feel with the excitement of a big city.” Lots of festivals year round make this location a great day trip getaway. Visitors can shop, eat and drink their way through town with the vast assortment of restaurants, markets and malls. History buffs, check out the Yankee Air Museum and the University of Michigan Museum of Natural History. Both offer permanent and rotating exhibits.
Detroit, the largest city in the state, is a hub for nationally acclaimed entertainment, from concerts and nightclubs to galleries and auto attractions. This is, after all, the “Motor City” of the United States. There’s street art around every corner, and street tours cover food, prohibition, jazz and Motown themes. TIMBERLAKE RESORT, LOCATED IN the beautiful western portion of Michigan’s Lower Peninsula, affords its guests an opportunity to enjoy a wide variety of on-site recreational activities. The area surrounding the resort offers amusement parks, golf courses, “u-pick” fruit and vegetable farms, and beaches with an abundance of sand dunes for hours of leisure and entertainment.
Water-lovers will enjoy the trip north to visit Ludington, popular in the area as a fishing center on the shore of Lake Michigan. Anglers will want to try their luck fishing for chinook, coho, and king salmon in Lake Michigan, as well as the Pere Marquette River. Or just spend some time watching the freighters and pleasure boats on the Pere Marquette Lake.
In town, you can relive the history of Mason County at the Rose Hawley Museum and see the large lighted cross that overlooks the harbor, or visit the White Pine Village of twenty 19th-century reconstructed structures. Superb sand beaches and dunes can also be found in the Ludington State Park, just eight miles north of town.
Take Highway 10 east into the Manistee National Forest, the Chain O’ Lakes and Big Star Lake near Baldwin. You’ll want to stop at the Shrine of the Pines, just south of Baldwin, on the banks of the Pere Marquette River. This memorial to the white pine features a log hunting lodge complete with furnishings hand-carved from white pine trees that were cut down more than a hundred years ago.
Just south of the resort is the small town of Shelby, surrounded by orchards and asparagus farms. Stop at the Shelby Man-made Gemstone to see a display of man-made artificial stones and how they are produced.
No visit to the region would be complete without spending some time in Muskegon, the largest city on Lake Michigan’s eastern shoreline. Once known as the “Lumber Queen of the World,” today Muskegon is an industrial center as well as an interesting spot for tourists.
