NATURE TRAILS, MUSEUMS SHORES OF LAKE ERIE

IF BEING IN THE OUTDOORSand savoring the quiet that Mother Nature affords is what you’re looking for, Millbrook Outdoor Resort is the place to visit. Imagine yourself enjoying the many recreational facilities at the resort, going for a walk along the nature trails, or going for a short drive to visit the many area tourist attractions.

An interesting afternoon’s outing might include a visit to the shores of Lake Erie to the north. While in that area, be sure to visit the Conneaut Historical Railroad Museum housed in the old New York Central Station, displaying railroad cars and an old steam engine from the railroad steam era.

To the south is Shandy Hall at Unionville, built in 1815 and believed to be the oldest house in the Western Reserve. The 17-room hall includes the original cellar kitchen and formal parlor complete with American Empire furniture.

Another stop might be the Indian Museum of Lake County at Painesville. The history of the Hopewell and Adena Indian cultures, as well as artifacts of other North American tribes, are on display.

At Kirtland, you can walk along the trails through the 3,100-acre natural woodlands of the Holden Arboretum. Horticultural displays, gardens, and an abundance of trees and wildflowers can be seen.

The family will be sure to enjoy Pioneer Waterland Wet and Dry Adventure Park at Chardon. This 75-acre scenic adventure park features waterslides, lazy inner-tube rides, a play area for young children, mini go-carts, golf and batting cages, and a 3/4 mile Grand Prix track. 4051STATE ROUTE 46 SOUTH JEFFERSON, OH 44047 (440) 484–4000 • EASTERN TIME

MOHICAN RIVER AND DAM, HIKING, MALABAR FARM

IN A PEACEFUL VALLEY SETTINGalong Ohio’s Mohican River, Wally World Riverside Resort offers a rustic beauty and charm to all its visitors. About midway between Columbus and Cleveland, the resort is in Ohio’s vacation center, with the Great Lakes only a two-hour drive to the north.

The Mohican State Park and Dam provide a large lake for seasonal water activities, and the extensive Mohican Memorial State Forest provides year-round hiking and many other activities.

The closest area attraction is Malabar Farm State Park where displays review the state’s agricultural heritage. Its sustainable agricultural library maintains volumes of historical information, and the 32-room country home of author Louis Bromfield, located here, is open for tours.

Bromfield was a man of many passions and interests, and his lovely farm, which he reclaimed from ecological collapse, was one of his most abiding interests. The house is in mint condition, the fields are prosperous, and it’s a marvelous place for collections of paintings and sculptures including works by Winslow Homer, Mary Cassatt, George Bellows, and Frederick Remington.

To the east of the resort, in Holmes, Wayne, and Tuscarawas Counties is the largest population of Amish in the world. The best way to enjoy Amish country is to simply explore it, traveling the back roads and lanes at the same pace that the Amish do, which is gently, indeed.

No trip to Amish country would be complete without visiting Lehman’s Hardware store in Kidron. It caters to the particular needs of the Amish and stocks such items as sad irons, propane refrigerators, and huge copper and cast-iron kettles. In nearly every community you’ll find the Amish making clocks, chairs, desks, carriages, harnesses, and more.

WAYNE NATIONAL FOREST GOLFING, RIVER RAFTING,

KOUNTRY RESORT CAMPGROUNDis a family-oriented luxury resort in southeast Ohio, just three miles from the Ohio River and the West Virginia state line.

Four lakes make water sports popular at this Ohio River Valley resort. Golfers will find an 18-hole course nearby, and adventurous visitors can thrill to river rafting. For the young and young-at-heart, roller skating can also be found within easy driving distance.

Wayne National Forest, which surrounds the resort in Ohio, offers breathtaking beauty to nature and wildlife enthusiasts, as does Strouds Run State Park and Shade River State Forest. Old Man’s Cave at Logan is also a popular nearby attraction for visitors.

In Athens, less than a 30-minute drive north of the resort, is the beautiful and historic campus of Ohio University, the first university chartered in the Northwest Territory in 1804. Visitors can tour the college green, Trisolini Gallery, Baker Center, and Gailbreath Chapel.

Just a few miles north of Athens in Nelsonville, a scenic trip through Hocking Valley on a 1916 steam locomotive is offered every weekend during the summer.

East of the resort, in Wellston, the Buckeye Furnace State Memorial is also open during the summer. Here visitors can see a reconstructed charcoal-fired iron blast furnace that was originally built in 1851.

A short-drive south of the resort and across the Ohio River into West Virginia is Point Pleasant Battle Monument State Park. At the confluence of the Ohio and Kanawha Rivers an 85-foot monument commemorates the frontiersmen who fought and died here in a battle with the forces of Indian Chief Hokolesqua (Cornstalk) on October 10, 1774. The Mansion House Museum is also located in the park and contains artifacts of early settlers. 44705RESORT ROAD RACINE, OH 45771 (740) 992–6488 EASTERN TIME
