Twist Formating in Cube Exercise 1 A Vocabulary and A Grammar

In this exercise, the “vocabulary” of “Twist” was introduced into the designing of the objects. This object is referred to as a “object” rather than miniaturized representations of buildings. The relationships between the line, plane and mass and “twist” produced an architectural “grammar” that created a variety of spaces with different hierarchy. This object is trying to show operation of twisting by all directions rather than in only few dimensions. The gramma of the final design was formed by the similar shapes in different material which are twisting into the center of the cube by different speeds.

Series of Drawing on Newhouse I Exercise 2.1 Recording of Scale, Movement, and Context

In this project, we worked in teams to observe, experience and represent in drawings conditions of scalar reference to the human body, designed sequences of architectural space and relationships between building and physical context as are found in Newhouse I on the Syracuse University campus. I drew the two sections of the Newhouse I. This building create a strong atmosphere by using the contrast of compressing in the threshold and the sudden open of space in the atrium. It also use the heavily material of concrete and volumetric roof to emphasize it’s formal elements.

Study On House in Fontinha Exercise 3 Learning How to Learn from Architecture The operation of carving was used through the design of House in Fontinha. It was motivated by the context this architecture belongs to and had impacts on the movement of people inside the building and also the scale of it. In the House of Fontinha, the formal operation of verb “carve” was motivated by the context , showed in the appearance of the building, and had impacts on people’s circulation and residential feeling.

This building presents as high volumetric spaces. It would be observed as three rectangle volumes being overlapped, which create the gallery, studio, and living space to meet the need of the artists. A s a p a i n t e r, t h e r e s i d e n c e w o u l d need extra height space for his/her studio and gallery to place large piece of painting. This need leads to the formal operations of interlocking which are used to create doubleheight spaces and single-height spaces. Through combine these different height spaces by shifting them from each o t h e r, t h e s p a c e s a r e c o n n e c t e d a n d created spatial sequence that linked from gallery, which is the most public place, to the area where the artist live, which would be considered as the most private space. The shifting in vertical dimension is also creating the interchanging feeling in space and view, for people can have a glimpse of other part of the building through the opening.
