Public Area Accommodating lobby, meetings, restaurant, bar, swimming pool and a wedding chapel, the public area is comprised of a series of two-storey buildings featuring local material and architectural tradition. Several courtyards are blended into these buildings, blurring the boundary between indoor and outdoor spaces, and inviting spectacular scenery into the interiors. The forms and materials of public area reflect history of traditional Chinese Southern Architecture, such as elements like white walls, wooden doors and windows, pitched roof, etc...

Public Area The vertical design of public area follows topographic tendency of the site, capturing the most appealing views of the tea garden. This method can also make a balance between cut and fill of the site when determining grading solution. The public area is set on three platforms with different height level, and each level provides visual corridors for other levels to get access to the view of tea garden to the south and the mountain to the north. Most importantly, it follows the principle of greatly preserving original state of the site.

Beijing Hutong Courtyard Community Overview Located on the Northwest of Beijing, the Hutong Courtyard Community tries to renovate a historical type of residence, Siheyuan, which serves as a cultural symbol of Beijing. In the space configuration of each basic unit, courtyard is at the focal point. Surrounded by buildings in four directions, each yard has its own unique function and feature. This project tries to integrate modern lifestyle and techniques into traditional culture, so as to build ideal living spaces. Except for some highend villas, there are also some social housing units for lowincome families, making it an inclusive community.

Basic Unit - Sketchup Model Siheyuan is a historical type of residence throughout China, especially in Beijing. It was the basic pattern used for residences and regarded as an ideal living space, as the series of spaces are organised by courtyards, which not only bring natural light and fresh air, and also green space and outdoor communal activities. All indoor spaces are well connected by outdoor courtyards. Compared with traditional Siheyuan, there are some innovations in the units in this project. The mono-pitched roof is the main feature, with all the slopes going towards the courtyard (But it is changed in final confirmed scheme). The other innovation is materials. There are mainly three types of materials: stone, timber and dark grey roof tile, which are a combination of traditional and modern materials.

Basic Unit - Floor Plans The basic unit has 4 levels, two underground levels and two levels above the ground. Two yards are sunk to the basement, providing fresh air and greenery for underground spaces, which function as the entertainment centre for the family. The main part of ground floor is public space for the household, which are surrounding the main yard in the centre, except for the guest room and elderly room on the north. Bedrooms for family members are in the first floor, which is set back to the north, allowing more sunlight for yard on the ground floor.

Neighbourhoods Several basic units form a group, creating a type of narrow street, called Hutong. Many neighbourhoods are formed by joining one Siheyuan to another to form a Hutong, and then joining one Hutong to another. The word hutong is also used to refer to such neighbourhoods.

Social Housing In order to deal with housing crisis, especially for low-income groups, China has instructed the governments of six cities including Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen, to build more public housing to be rented by low-income residents. So, all new residential development should include certain amount of social housing units. On the west side of the site, there are two social housing buildings as required. According to Beijing’s regulation for newly built residential development, every project needs to provide certain amount of social housing units, to meet the housing shortage of low-income families. Normally, they are two-bedroom apartments. The appearance of social housing building is modern and elegant, with four colors of paints are applied.
Perspective of Social Housing
14
Social Housing There are two social housing buildings in the site, and the main units are two-bedroom units. Even though these units are compact, their design principles are the same to other highend villas, with kitchen and toilet having direct access to natural light and ventilation.

Riverside Commercial Street Conceptual Design Overview This commercial street is part of an elderly community, Xinhexin Utopi-land community. Its main purpose is to provide healthy and medical service for the elderly, like Chinese acupuncture. Guilin is famous for its water and mountain. Set by the riverside, the Riverside Commercial Street has direct access to the Peach Blossom River, which provides beautiful scenery for the surrounding environment. The mainly two-storey buildings have a good view of the water. Inner courtyards are melt into these buildings, which are also connected with the commercial street. So there are three kind of spaces: outdoor space, intermediate space, and indoor space. The square is the focal point of the street, which is a traditional symbol of commercial street locally.

Design Sketches-Concept The proposal for this project intends to provide a venue for citizens to find some happiness, especially for adults, because our urban environment is not so kind enough to help them to relax under the pressure of work and other pressure. This cultural hub works as a playground for them to make new friends, to see an exhibition, or to watch some outdoor dancing performances. Exhibition and performance are the key explorations for the site. Their scale of expression and relationship with space will have great impact on people’s activities.

Design Sketches-Section My proposal intends to integrate four functions into a whole. In the outside level, it can mostly make full use of natural resources and great view of the surrounding scenery. In the inside level, it works as a dynamic and magnetic cultural centre for all kinds of activities.

23
Design Sketches-Plan The purpose of this project is to build a cultural hub for the surrounding area, binding the segregated spaces into an inclusive destination. So, the relationship between the office buildings on the north and river on the south is the key issue to deal with. Several passways are created to strength their relationship over the railway. Meanwhile, a horizontal axis along the site also help create a dynamic and inviting environment for the visitors nearby.

24
Design Sketches-Perspectives One of the key principles of this project is to build close connections. A series of courtyards help build connections throughout different levels, so people in different spots can have visual connection, for example, people in public space can catch a glimpse of the family life by the courtyard, and residents living upstairs could also have a look at the activities downstairs.
25
Main Floor Plans On level 0-1, it builds some bridges to connect the International Quarter to the park. People have easy access from surrouding areas to the site. On level 2-3, it builds connections between different functions by a circled inner space. On the top levels are housing units, which enjoy the beautiful views and sunshine. Each Unit owns a south garden. Meanwhile, there is an intermediate space between the public ground and the open space for residents.

New Islington Borders Context
Design Strategy
New Islington Borders is a counter project to Central Retail Park in Manchester, prepared by the students of the MA Architecture and Urbanism programme at Manchester School of Architecture 2017/18.
The site strategy was to take in the height and density of the historic buildings in Ancoats, which created a permeable urban wall to Great Ancoats Street, with buildings falling in height from west to east and towards the landscape of Cotton Field Park in New Islington. This results in three distinct planning zones which provide an indication of future phasing. They are largely rectilinear in its organization facing Ancoats, radial facing in the centre of the site and organic at the junction with Old Mill Street.
New Islington Borders covers an area of roughly 10 Acres and is bordered by the Ring Road to the south, the scenic, recreational landscape of Cotton Field Park to the north, Old Mill Street to the east, and the Rochdale Canal to the west. It marks the transition from the mixed commercial and residential development in the Piccadilly Basin and the Northern Quarter to the residential developments in Ancoats and New Islington.

Perspectives New Islington Borders is designed to have a dynamic relationship with its neighbouring areas. The openness of northwest border blends the site’s boundaries with Cotton Field Park, while commuters along Great Ancoats Street are welcomed by a diverse array of shops and restaurants. The buildings facing Rochdale Canal and the rigid, industrial architecture of the historic mills imbibe this architectural vocabulary its own mass and proportions.
Perspective by the Riverside
29
Perspectives New Islington Borders interacts with its context and the zones created within the development itself through a network of interlinked open pockets. Both the primary public spaces such as the Market Square, Boulevard, Park and Promenade and secondary open spaces are created by the strategic placement of buildings, where each space is given a distinct character which corresponds to the needs of its context. They are each given a unique identity, characterised by its street furniture, landscape and public art installations. The primary goal is to provide both visitors and residents several attractive routes when crossing the site through this mesh of open pockets connected by easily accessible pathways. My Allocated Site-Residence This is a 7 units residence building, which tries to realise the concept of vertical courtyard. The key design idea is to find a solution for housing in high-density area, while maintaining the largest exposure to nature. Each unit occupies a two-storey volume, with living space on first level and sleeping space on second level. Units in the upper level utilise the roof the lower units as gardens. All units have direct visual access to the Rochdale Canal.

My Allocated Site-Residence This residence building utilises the most traditional industrial material, red brick and black steel, to get an impression of industrial history. The distinct contrast between solid brick volume and light steel bars creates an elegant image. The volume and proportion of it has a balance with surrounding buildings. Living spaces facing the Rochdale Canal have a blarge window to provide promenade view of the canal for the family. And activities in garden of each unit have direct visual connection with the events in the bankside of the canal.

Others: Urban Thinking After several years of architectural practice and urban journeys throughout the Eastern and Western cities, I have gradually got an in-depth understanding of our living environment. Though cities all over world have diverse architectural styles, their basic principle is similar. It is not the facade of buildings that make our city vivid and charming, it is the spaces between the buildings, like streets, squares, or small pocket parks, that feature our cities. Together with the facade, the trees, benches, street lights, related events, etc., contributing to a liveable city.
