TO THE READER “Everything you can imagine is real” Pablo Picasso
“How long have we been here?” asked Jimmy. Noah looked at his little brother. Sadness flickered in his eyes. “I don’t know,” he answered, looking around. “I’ve lost track of time.” They sat next to each other on the beach in the warm sand, each lost in thought. “I don’t even remember how we got here,” Noah continued, “to this dark island.” The boys fixed their gaze on the ocean waves. The unending darkness was pierced solely by the shining silver tides; battering the rocks before eventually retreating. The waves surrounding the “black island” - that’s what Jimmy called it - gleamed sparkling white as if the ocean was made of shimmering diamonds. No moonlight, no stars on the night sky, only the shimmering silver tides illuminated the edges of the island. “This doesn’t look like the real world,” Noah whispered, “Morning never comes here. Neither does rain or wind. It’s just darkness encircled by the ocean. Like we’re in a parallel universe, somewhere very magical, very beautiful, and very scary.” Jimmy clung onto his brother. “I want to go home.” he whimpered. Noah wound his arms around Jimmy.
“It’s time we try and escape this island and these waves.” he said, “Let’s make a boat. It might take weeks, but we have to try.” They headed to a nearby grove. Noah pulled out a knife he had found on the island earlier and started cutting some branches from the trees. Jimmy helped him carry the branches back to the beach. The brothers tried to tie the branches, but nothing seemed to keep them together. “We need to stop.” Noah said to his brother “We’ll do better when we have rested.” They crawled into a lean-to that they had made from large leaves and some ivy stems. Worried and exhausted; the boys fell asleep to the sound of the silver tides lapping on the beach. A few hours passed and Noah opened his eyes. He headed back to the beach to keep working on the boat when he gasped from surprise and shouted: “Jimmy! Come here, look at this!” “It’s built! We have the boat!” Jimmy squealed, jumping up and down from happiness. The boat stood complete, finished, and even bigger and stronger than the boys had imagined. “Who did this?” Noah asked, “there’s no one here other than us.” “Who are you?! Where are you!”, he yelled, scanning the island. He received no answer, but smiled and said “Whoever you are, thank you.” The boys pushed the boat into the ocean and then got in, rowing fearlessly into the waves. The waves tossed the boat around, lifting it high on the swells before crashing back down. The boys felt like they were fighting the ocean, battling for supremacy and survival. Noah and Jimmy kept fighting with all their strength and enthusiasm and their boat endured every attack of the powerful tides. After hours, or maybe days, the boys finally crossed the boundaries of the silver circle, As the silver circle receded, their fear faded away from their hearts, replaced by a gentle feeling of relief: they saw the sun shining from the blue sky, and a beach, crowded with people.

Robert Steven Connett is a self-taught artist currently living in Los Angeles California. His beautifully realized visions of an unseen world teeming with vibrant and complex lifeforms opens windows into a universe that we rarely contemplate. Microscopic biological phenomena of the natural world, both flora and fauna, and particularly that of oceanic origins, provide Connett with bountiful inspirations. His colorful imagination ensures his creations rise above the natural and inhabit a sphere somewhere between the familiar and the extraordinary. Connett masterfully brings a sumptuous and bizarre underworld into existence.

Daniel Ĺ˜eĹ™icha I was born in 1972 and currently live in Krupka, which is near Teplice, a small town in the foothills of the Ore Mountains of the Czech Republic. If I had to classify myself, I would call myself a landscape photographer. Landscapes have always been a passion for me, but recently I feel that color landscape photography looks complicated and orderless. That brought me to B&W photography, which I feel is cleaner and more defined. I have presented at exhibition shows in the Czech republic, winning several awards for my work, notably the Neutral Density Photography Award, SIENA International Photo Award, IPA Photography Award, and Fine Art Photography Award.

Helen Ahpornsiri is an Illustrator based in East Sussex, UK. All images are made using only real flowers, petals, stems and leaves. These are grown or foraged responsibly before being placed in a flower press. After 1-6 weeks of pressing, the flora and foliage is flat and ready to use – preserved in their natural colours, with no paints or dyes. Each piece is then cut and delicately positioned to form detailed illustrations; all brimming with the intricate twists and tangles of plant life.
