Client: The Arts Council in Columbus Project: Renovation of the Brad’s Building Location: the Washington street. and 6th street in downtown Columbus, Indiana The Commons helped the Arts Council in Columbus, IN to renovate its Brad’s Building, with its financial dilemma and losing connection with locals. The intent of this project aimed to create a “new community” in the building for adults and for arts to thrive with people. The Commons introduced various functions to this place, including a gym, a grand gallery, a café/bar, a 24-hour convenience store and an Airbnb. This multi-function space brought convenience living and working in downtown, accentuated the art and design culture of Columbus, closely interacted with the vivid downtown atmosphere, and created a space that reveals the cultural diversity of Columbus, though inclusiveness of the local community.

Woolery Crossing is a restoration project for Woolery Limestone Mill. It is a place where all old and new things fusing together, aimed to eat, shop, live and stay as one. Utilizing the “crossing” motif into elements of landscaping, materials, structure, and design will contribute to the overall feeling and atmosphere for the space. The location of the Woolery Crossing enables the area to be a crossroads between locals and travelers. The new structure will enhance the original, embracing the history of the building and the surrounding space. All of these elements will come together to create an inclusive atmosphere for people gathering around to eat, shop, live and stay.
W oolery C rossing
In this project, residential and commercial areas were required, but the hotel part was based on our team research. I designed multiple models for the new structure which can represent the idea of “crossing”. Also, I did the space planning based on required functions; as well as generated final renders.

This project deals with the building as a Historic Preservation project, in that the important “character defining” elements of the building are to be preserved; however, other elements is allowed to get altered with care, and other things can be removed entirely. The project contains two parts, the first half focuses on the “secret club” idea, as the use of the original building. The new look meant to be a music industry company which dedicating itself on local music business and live venue. The second part is to design a commercial restaurant on the top floor of this building, with a rooftop dining;

House for Ceramist is a residential design project with a workshop and a garden. This project requires using “Organizing Systems” and “Design Principles” to understand spatial relationships, to coordinate positive spaces like spaces in use, and negative spaces such as circulation path, wall openings, etc.
House for Ceramist
The goal is to clarify different functions of spaces, though not separating each area from the whole. By using “Organizing Systems” and “Design Principles”, the site is divided into two parts for residence and work space by a zigzag circulation to the inner garden. Two buildings are accessible through the main circulation path, and are connected on the second floor with a balcony as the transition area. The use of concrete for linear walls and curtain systems for curvilinear walls and wall openings creates contrasts for this house.

Location: Plaça Comercial, 12, Barcelona, Spain, 08003 This project asks students to create a landscape design for an assigned neighborhood in Barcelona, Spain. The design, without any limitation, must represent characteristics of and interact with the neighborhood. Students need to analyze one or more issues that currently affect the local and surrounding; then try to solve the problem with the design.

History: Mercat del Born stands an important position on Catalonian History. In 1714, it used to be at the border of the military citadel by King Philip V’s troop, connecting with the El Born. In 18711921, it became the largest wholesale market in Barcelona. At present, the building functions as a historical site, which becomes the symbol of El Born.

SITE ANALYSIS In front of the Mercat del Born, the plaza keeps patterns of the pavement the same as the original layout of the medieval town. The building sits on the route from the ancient Roman city, through the Passeig del Born to the El Born. Due to historical facts and the location, Mercat del Born represents the history and the memory of El Born and Catalonian city, as well as the war of the Spanish Succession.
EL BORN CC
CURRENT ISSUES The remained layout of old city on the pavement intents to link the history and to evoke people’s respect and sympathy to the history. However, the pavement is not distinguishable; and thousands of people do not notice it while walking on it. The plaza is shared by pedestrians and vehicles together, but without a clear boundary for people and cars. The circulation becomes chaotic and dangerous during the peak time of a day. Also, without any seats, people only can sit on the ground when needed. The plaza is highly lack of function and not as monumental as it tended to be.

PURPOSE OF TEXTS Texts shows events and short stories of the 1714 war. It allows travellers to know more about history of Barcelona and Catalonia.
ORDER OF TEXTS Texts would be randomly placed in different parts. People would explore this area more that increases the circulation and the use of the space rather than the space only being a memorial.
BRONZE - Bronze brings warmth to the site. - It allows people to interact with the design. - It represents heaviness of the history. - It creates patina over time, which reminds people of time and history of 1714.

The Dialogue is a project focusing on Biological Adaptations in Public Art within 12’ x 4’ x 12’ dimensions. Firstly, students researched biological forms, patterns and structures, as well as digital fabrications. Locating at IU Bloomington campus near music school and residential hall, my design intended to welcome students to interact with the space and to enjoy the lighting effect created by the sun and the model. Openings on the model highlighted certain areas on the exterior wall of music school; and the form of this design reflected with the surrounding environment.
The Dialogue
Modeling with Grasshopper, I studied the sun path diagram, how the sun would impact the lighting effect, and made changes on design in order to enhance the user experience by introducing more shading area in summer while more sunlight during the winter.

During the biological research process, the relationship between polyps and coenosarc inspired me and became my main focus on adapting this relationship to digital fabrication. Individual polyps are closed with others and connected by coenosarc, the form that shows an organic and web-like pattern.
By tracing shapes of coral and polyps, it created a pattern with irregular voids. It leads me to start researching digital fabrication methods with folding techniques which contain organic shapes and openings to create lighting effects.
From the digital fabrication research, I studied the C _ WALL by Matsys Design. The C _ WALL used paper as material, generated cutting panels in Grasshopper. It adapted techniques by folding edges of individual pieces and attach edges together to form the shape. The voids on the design created interesting lighting effects.

The chosen site locates between Memorial Hall and Merrill Hall (Jacobs School of Music) by the 3rd street. It is an island surrounded by a circle drive with two trees at the north and south side and leaving a large empty space in between. It also has direct solar exposures to south east, south and west. The site is accessible in all directions. However, people come across this island mainly from 4 sides (see SITE CONDITION) for shortcuts to other directions. My design concept intends to create a installation not only would provide lighting effect for the site, but also to welcome students from surroundings to interact with the design and enjoy this place. Due to trees on site, another design intention is to create a form that would respond to the surrounding environment. It could enhance the visual experience of the design.

ITERATION 3
This iteration separates the circulation and gathering area, with an opening on the long side as a “gate”. HINGE DESIGN Hinge was inspired from mortise and tenon joint originally in ancient Chinese woodworking. The small piece was cut with a 116.6o to match the angle between two pieces of Dodecahedron.
HINGE ITERATIONS Due to the difficulty of installation, hinges were improved from original to other two shapes
1
Pros: created very strong model Cons: very difficult to install due to the stable shape of Dodecahedron
2
Based on the original hinge shape, Hinge-2 made larger opening on one side, keeping a little of motise part for piece to slide in. Pros: kept the stability of the model, improved installation process
3
With largest opening on one side, keeping a little of mortise part for piece to slide in. Pros: very easy to install, perfect for holding objects Cons: restricted in use, only work for the bottom piece

JOINTS UPGRADE To improve the installation experience and to provide a more stable structure, two separate pieces were combined by sharing one edge. The edge was a series of dashed lines which created wider openings after laser cutting. Tablet based slideshows attached to shelving tells the story of the product located on that shelf. It communicates with customers easily and ensures their awareness toward local products.
We want to get the message out that Bloomingfoods is not that much more expensive than other grocery stores. When it is, the color sticker justifies the difference in pricing by showing customers what their money is going towards (community, local farmers, etc)
