Living Room Theater aims to bring its upscale art-house movie theater concept to an 11-arce, mixed-use Bottleworks District, blending the Art Deco style of Original building into the new Industrial-like concept. We used perforated metal throughout the space to emphasize the industrial style, but also introduced art deco style furniture to balance between the two. The first level is the box office and a gathering lobby. The second level is a farm-to-table restaurant/bar, and 8 theaters hold 40-60 patrons, with one theater holds 90.

In this design, I developed the contour model through Rhino and used this idea to form spaces and to lead circulation; besides, I generated solar study, based on the result to adjust the length of model around the curtain wall. In this way, it could block some sunlight during the summer to avoid glare and overheating the office. Other team members dedicated on furniture and finishing selections, furniture layout.

House for Ceramist is a residential design project with a gallery, workshop and garden. This project used polar grid system to understand spatial relationships, to coordinate positive spaces like spaces in use, and negative spaces such as circulation path, wall openings, etc.
House for Ceramist
The goal is to clarify different functions of spaces, though not separating each area from the whole. The site is divided into two parts for residence and studio/gallery by a zigzag circulation to the inner garden. Two buildings are accessible through the main circulation path, and are connected on the second floor with a balcony as the transition area. The use of concrete for linear walls and curtain systems for curvilinear walls and wall openings creates contrasts for this house.

Woolery Crossing is a restoration project for Woolery Limestone Mill. It is a place where old and new things fusing together, aimed to eat, shop, live and stay as one. Utilizing the “crossing” motif into elements of landscaping, materials, structure, design contributes to the overall feeling and atmosphere for the space. The location of the Woolery Crossing made the area a crossroads between locals and travelers. The new structure enhances the original, embracing the history of the building and the surrounding space. These elements together create an inclusive atmosphere for people.
Woolery Crossing
In this project, residential and commercial areas were required, but the hotel part was based on our team research. I designed multiple models for the new structure and space planning based on required functions which can represent the idea of “crossing”.

LOCALS
Most hotels are located in the northern city near the highway or consentrated in downtown. However, no hotels or inns are close to the south side of town. The nearest hotel is 3 miles away from the southern highway entrance. Thus, our team decided to make the third type of use as a hotel.

The Dialogue
Project: Biological Adaptations in Public Art
The Dialogue focused on experiment biological feature adapting to architecture and utilizing on Public Art within 12’ x 4’ x 12’ dimensions.
“談” 是一個著眼于嘗試將生物特性 運用到建築表皮、結構、肌理,并 通過不超過 4m*1.2m*4m 的裝置 藝術實驗。
Students researched on biological forms, patterns and structures, as well as digital fabrications. Locating at IU Bloomington campus near music school and residential hall, my design intended to welcome students to interact with the space and to enjoy the lighting effect created by the sun and the model. Openings on the model highlighted certain areas on the exterior wall of music school; and the form of this design reflected with the surrounding environment.
Modeling with Grasshopper, I studied the sun path diagram, how the sun would impact the lighting effect, and made changes on design in order to enhance the user experience by introducing more shading area in summer while more sunlight during the winter.

During the biological research process, the relationship between polyps and coenosarc inspired me and became my main focus on adapting this relationship to digital fabrication. Individual polyps are closed with others and connected by coenosarc, the form that shows an organic and web-like pattern.
61 |
By tracing shapes of coral and polyps, it created a pattern with irregular voids. It leads me to start researching digital fabrication methods with folding techniques which contain organic shapes and openings to create lighting effects.
From the digital fabrication research, I studied the C _ WALL by Matsys Design. The C _ WALL used paper as material, generated cutting panels in Grasshopper. It adapted techniques by folding edges of individual pieces and attach edges together to form the shape. The voids on the design created interesting lighting effects.

DESIRED VIEW
The chosen site locates between Memorial Hall and Merrill Hall (Jacobs School of Music) by the 3rd street. It is an island surrounded by a circle drive with two trees at the north and south side and leaving a large empty space in between. It also has direct solar exposures to south east, south and west. The site is accessible in all directions. However, people come across this island mainly from 4 sides (see SITE CONDITION) for shortcuts to other directions. My design concept intends to create a installation not only would provide lighting effect for the site, but also to welcome students from surroundings to interact with the design and enjoy this place. Due to trees on site, another design intention is to create a form that would Respond to the surrounding environment. It could enhance the visual experience of the design.

PRELIMINARY DESIGN ITERATIONS ITERATION 1 This design idea has an “S” shape, with an opening at the center part. People can either walk through the design or stand on each side by the curved “wall”.
Overhang for shades and shadows
Model Generation I
ITERATION 2 The second model is similar to an arch, with the south end more enclosed served as a gathering area, while the north side more open. People can walk underneath the arch for more interaction with the design.
Circulation Path Model Hexagon Panel Grid Gathering Area
ITERATION 3
This iteration separates the circulation and gathering area, with an opening on the long side as a “gate”. The top of the design has a distorted form, from an arch-like lower area to an overhang at the highest point. The organic form would correspond with the surrounding environment.

D3 LAMP
This lamp is a self-motivated project. I was fansinated by the shape of dodecahedron, and the quality of its steadiness.
“D 的三次方”是一個自發項目,靈 感是源自於正十二面體的外觀和穩 定性。
The panel is a recycled material from paper with quite high density. I tested many methods to connect between panels, finally found a combination of three types of clip that are most time and cost efficient.
With the repetitive pattern as negative space on the lamp, it creates interesting shadow on the walls and other surfaces. It also provides ambient light for the space, which can be a great decorative product.

HINGE DESIGN Hinge was inspired from mortise and tenon joint originally in ancient Chinese woodworking. The small piece was cut with a 116.6 o to match the angle between two pieces of Dodecahedron.
HINGE ITERATIONS Due to the difficulty of installation, hinges were improved from original to other two shapes
1
Pros:
created very strong model
Cons: very difficult to install due to the stable shape of Dodecahedron
2
Based on the original hinge shape, Hinge-2 made larger opening on one side, keeping a little of motise part for piece to slide in. Pros: kept the stability of the model, improved installation process
3
With largest opening on one side, keeping a little of mortise part for piece to slide in. Pros: very easy to install, perfect for holding objects Cons:

restricted in use, only work for the bottom piece
JOINTS UPGRADE To improve the installation experience and to provide a more stable structure, two separate pieces were combined by sharing one edge. The edge was a series of dashed lines which created wider openings after laser cutting. Because the elasticity of material, it created tension for the edge, and made it possible to be folded to desired angles.
