01/ CORNERS OF THE STREETS Urban design studio | 2016 Fall Tongji University Tutor: Songhua Dai Individual work
In this studio every student are require to survey the Hongkou Harbor District to find problems and resources related to the tourism. The study finally turned into an urban design to attract and serve tourists. During the survey I found it easily for people to stay on the corners of streets because of the complicated pattern of roads. The photos taken on the corners show the context of the area. I used the version of photographer as a prototype and transfered it into architectural interventions.

AMBITION AND SITUATION OF HONGKOU HARBOUR Huangpu river and Suzhou river are the two most important rivers in Shanghai. At the junction of them, Huangpu District, Pudong District, and Hongkou District intersect. Huangpu District is the oldest district in Shanghai and the early Shanghai city developed from it. The Bund in Huangpu District which was once the financial center of Aisa is a symbol of Shanghai.Pudong District
Tourism in Three Districts developed sharply afer 1970s and the new financial center of Shanghai, Lujiazui lies there. The high-rise buildings and the skyline of Lujiazui is another symbol of Shanghai. The Hongkou Harbor near the Bund and Lujiazui lacks attraction. The government of Hongkou launched a plan to find the symbols of Hongkou and gain competitiveness.

Every tourist going to Shanghai visits this place for the history of Shanghai. Hongkou The Hongkou Harbor used to be an important harbor in Shanghai. Now the water transport has declined since the condition of rivers got wrose. The context here is disorded.

is a characteristic of Hongkou Harbor. A tour guide on scenes of corners is needed for tourists interested in history of streets and buildings. There is an area of vacant land on the site. The program need a tour center for people to have a grand view of the district and get maps and guides which can lead them to the corners they want to go.

Because the pattern of reads is complicated, there are many different types of corners in various angles and shape. The traffic lights in the area is more than other parts in the city. When waiting for the traffic light, tourists can see different buildings on the corners of the streets. These buildings were built in various ages and have different forms according to the corners. O2/ THE NORTH BUND Infrastructure studio | 2017 Spring Tongji University Tutor: Yung Ho Chang, Zheng Tan Collaborator: Haozhou Zhang
In this studio every each team (2-3 students) are required to pick up a “landscape typology for a full-semester study. The study consists of a site-survey report, a code visualization report, and a code-intervention proposal. My collaborator and I choose flood control as the subject to study. We analyzed the composition of the infrastructure and found the problem of the boundaries in the infrastructure. Then we used boolean method as architectural intervention to reform the flood control.
09
FLOOD CONTROL: BETWEEN THE BUILT AND NATURAL
Line 1
Huangpu River is the main river crossing through the city of Shanghai. To prevent the city from possible flood, flood control is built along the two sides of Huangpu River. Near the junction of Suzhou river and Huangpu river lies the center of Shanghai. Green land covers the flood control and provides people with public space. There are three areas of landscape on banks of Huangpu river. The North Bund green land is
one of them. Compared to other two areas, The North Bund green land has a considerable area of green land and natural scene which are rare in the urban district of Shanghai. However, Hongkou harbor green land attract much fewer people than other two. It is important to figure out why people cannot use this landscape frequently and how to adjust this flood control to link the built and natural environment.

INFRASTRUCTURE OF FLOOD CONTROL
Composite Infrastructure
Flood control is a complex infrastructure and composed with zones and levels. Greenland, buildings, a cruise terminal underground, a dock constitute the whole infrastructure. Before the design, a site survey and mapping is necessary. The site is separated into five part in masterplan. A composite mapping show that the infrastructure are divided into six zones and two flows of movement runs through the infrastructure.

Break the Boundary
LIFE INTO THE INFRASTRUCTURE Three vertical levels and three horizontal zones divide the infrastructure into nine parts in space. Residents, employees, and tourist from in the city can use this infrastructure and go through it to the riverbank. The situation that people are not likely to use this infrastructure is because there are boundaries between different parts. The aim of this project is to create space for activities in this infrastructure and draw
people to it. The design strategies is breaking these boundaries. The strategies use Boolean operation in sight, accessibility, surface, and space. Urban, dock, constructions, and underground are linked to the green land. The boundary built and natural environment are penetrated by sunlight, air, wind, sight, and movement. The life in the urban context is introduced into the infrastructure.

03/ MEMORY ON BRICKS Museum design studio | 2015 Fall Tongji University Tutor: Ping Huang Individual work
In this studio students are required to survey the history of Shanghai folk culture and historical buildings. The project is aimed to study the prototypes and display method of museum and then design a folk culture museum in historical context. When I was surveying the demolition of historical I found a relationship between bricks, facade, items, life, and memory. I reused the bricks and elements of facade of the Lilong housing and design prototypes. Finally a collector of memory in different mediums was completed.

LILONG HOUSING IN SHANGHAI
Development and Decline
Shanghai was once a place where small villages distributed. After 1840, Shanghai began to develop into a grand city. A type of housing named Lilong was widely constructed to meet the demand of increasing population. Then after 1949, China develop quickly, especially Shanghai. High apartment buildings has
taken the place of Lilong housing. The bricks which were once mostly used are replaced by other materials. Lilong houses are broken into bricks, meanwhile, the old lifestyle in Lilong is going to disappear. This project tries to find a way to record the memory and to reuse the abandoned bricks.

DEBATES ON HARITAGE There are two main attitudes and solution towards Lilong housing. One of them is to regard Lilong housing as heritage for the unique style of facade. Thus people must preserve them. The other thinks the value of the facade is not as much as new building which replace Lilong housing. "History tells us where are we from and where will we go." 6 Yisan Ruan, Pioneer of architectural heritage conservation

EXISTING AND DEMOLISHED MEMORY Street
The Zhoushan Garden is still in use as residential housing. The Lilong housing in opposite e side of the street is removed but the facade is maintained and cover with new structure. It is used as museum which is far from the function it used to have. Both the brick wall in continuous use and new function can remind people of the time when Lilong housing is wildly separated in Shanghai.

04/ FLOWING SEATS Furniture design studio | 2015 Fall Tongji University Tutor: Hong Feng Individual work
In this studio students are required to read materials on the history of furniture design first. Then students should observe the usage of furniture in campus and find problems. Then the problems is to solved by using methods learned before. I surveyed the campus and pay special attention to the usage of a square in the campus. The movement of students flow through the square and no activities occur on the site. I used a segment of circle as module to fit the flexibility of move and stop of the flows of students.

UNOCCUPIED SQUARE In the campus of Tongji University there are two main areas: the living area and the study area. The campus has four squares. One of them lies in the living area and students have a rest, a picnic or such relaxing activities on it. Two of them lies in the studying area. Students get relax there during the breaks or dis-
cuss on study. The last square lies on the junction of the living and the studying areas. Student go through the squared from one side to another so flows of movement intersect on it but students rarely stay and take activities on it. The square is left unoccupied.

TIMELINE AND MOVEMENT OF THE SQUARE In order to find the potential activities that may take place on the square, square is put into a time line of academic buildings and dormitory. The movement of students will change if more activities are taken outside academic buildings and dormitory. Then the square will be fully used.

FABRICATED UNITS Because the movement on the square and the natural environment are unstapled, people need flexible seats to fit the different activities and weather condition. People move on curves so I divide the circle and make units that can form varies curves. Light and umbrella are needed for night and raining day.

FLEXIBLE SQUARE
Cloudy Day In cloudy days the light is soft and wind blow slowly. It is comfortable foe students stay outdoor, assemble the seats and take various activities.
Raining Day Shanghai often rains and makes it difficult for people to use outside space. The umbrellas assembled on the seats are useful in such condition.

FLEXIBLE SQUARE
Shining Day The strong sunlight sometimes is harmful to skin and eyes. People assemble the seats with umbrella to create shade.
Night At night the lack of light makes it difficult for people to take activities outdoor. Lights are arrayed on the square. Students can assemble the seat according to the need of light.
