RESTORATION OF THE CITY SENSES

Studio 05: " False Summits "

Human’s inherent senses and exploration of nature are domesticated by long-term manmade intervention. At the same time, the human-centered construction of urban areas squeezes the living space of animal and plant species.

However, the wildness that separates nature from humans is an underestimation of the natural richness of the city which hinders humans to capture and appreciate non-human life forms. Cities can also serve as sites of wild where the seasons, the weather, the topography and the body are experienced.

The process of wilding is a reinterpretation of urban environment and inner natural forms. In this way, recording, enhancing and amplifying the different scales of natural life forms and dynamic movement to show luxuriance and vitality of nature which maintain the wildness in cities. With

the transformation from landscape to microcosm, humans can capture the experience of wildness and senses, and put them as specimens into a cabinet of curiosities that record natural stories and geological information.

My research is seeking to make some of the hidden natural forms of cities visible again. In this way, my interventions and devices could be seen as trig points in the city, mapping and marking different environmental conditions and experiences.

"The Trig Pillars"

From1936 to 1962, there were about 6500 trig pillars installed across the country by OS. The Trig Pillars are some concrete structure which positioned in the landscape for the making of maps. In this way, mostly of them located on the hilltops for the purposes of visibility.

TRIG POINT, HELVELLYN

These trig points provide a base for the theodolites used by the survey teams, promoting accurate mapmaking. In addition, The network formed by thr trig pillars mark the landscape and geographical

location. Nowadays, with the development of GNSS, they are no longer used to the making of maps, although they still act as a frame of reference for walkers.

Therefore, the trig points provide a new invisible dimension to record and survey landscape. The system of my interventions and devices could be seen as trig points in the city, mapping and marking different environmental conditions and experiences.

"Summits in London" PROJECT BACKGROUND

Since 1937, the policy named the 'St Paul’s Heights' has operated in London to protect and enhance local views of the Cathedral.

The historic skyline, buildings and landscape which travel information as trig points are gradually submerged by the city. In this way, most of summits are invisible in urban space and the journey between different summits are blank.

"Manmade Summit"

ST Paul's Cathedral is broken down into fragments by the outline of the city's architecture and reassembled as pieces of a jigsaw puzzle in mind.

At the same time, as an important religious site within the city, the St paul shows not only a physical summit but also a religious spirit. The height shows a power

/ CHAPTER 1: Journey From Summit To Summit STORY BOOK

In the process, we are surrounded by city and the summits are invisible. Our brain makes cross-connections between the senses to record and analysis huge amount of outside information. The fragments of senses and Microcosmos required enhancment.

According to the working principle of petrichor, the device simulates the environmental conditions, providing rain and porous surface inorder to make petrichor.

With macroscale converting to microscale, the change of scale amplify and re-awanken the senses which capture the immediate experience. It also shows how the wind direction affect microclimate and natural smell.
