the grapes, drawing out the water (thereby concentrating the sugars and flavours) while also imparting unique flavours and aromas of its own. The result is a heady dessert wine abounding with notes of honey, lanolin, citrus peel, and dried orchard fruit. A note: Tokaji is labelled in terms of sweetness level, with the term “puttunyos” as the unit of measurement. Ranging from “1” to as high as “6” puttunyos, the higher the number, the sweeter the wine. A “3” or “4” is a good, medium sweetness to start with.

BANYULS

Chocoholic alert! Having chocolate with or after your meal? This is the accompaniment for you. This fortified gem from Southern France on the warm shores of the Mediterranean is likely the most perfect match for semi-sweet and dark chocolate. Sumptuous and rich, expect flavours or burnt orange peel, black plum, spice and mocha. Also worth checking out is Banyuls’ cousin from around the bend, Maury.

MUSCAT DE BEAUMESDE-VENISE

While Muscat can be made into dry still, off-dry still, dry sparkling and sweetish sparking wines, it is perhaps at its utmost when it is made into a dessert-style libation. Outrageously fragrant and musky on the nose, Muscat de Beaumes-de-Venise is lightly sweet and beckons with exuberant flavours of tree fruit and sweet flowers while maintaining a zippy freshness and elegance. Pairs beautifully with fresh berries, crème brûlée, or even blue cheese.

VIN SANTO

THE T SWEET LIFE IF ANYTHING, WHEN IT

he harsh, cold months of winter are a time to hunker down, as we wait for spring. Well, you may as well enjoy great food and wine along the way. This is the season for after-dinner drinks and nightcaps, and for many Canadians comfortable choices like Icewine, Port and Liquers are an easy go-to. However, there are other options to indulge in, to get you to go outside the box a bit. Here are just a few, to impress your guests and tickle your taste buds.

The name Vin Santo means “Wine of the Saints,” and this somewhat obscure dessert wine hails from the Chianti region in Tuscany. The grapes are dried out on straw mats (similar to Amarone) before being vinified, concentrating the flavours and aromatics. Then the wine is placed in large oak casks and aged for a minimum of three years, though more often for between five to 10 years. Over time the wine oxidizes and takes on notes of caramel, maple, roasted nuts and raisin. The traditional pairing for Vin Santo is biscotti cookies, which are then dipped in the wine. (Note: some dry Vin Santo wines are produced so be sure to check with your local wine store merchant to make sure you're purchasing a sweet one).

OLOROSO SHERRY

Sherry has been regaining prominence of late, and in response a movement of sherry bars has cropped up London, UK, and elsewhere. It’s easy to see why – good Sherry is truly a thing to behold and savour. However be warned, there are two distinct styles of Sherry: Fino, which is always dry and more than a little “challenging”, and Oloroso, which ranges from dry to syrupy sweet. Medium sweet Oloroso’s are a great place TOKAJI ASZU “The King of Wines, The Wine of Kings,” said King to start and positively sing with nutty aromas Louis XIV of France. This unctuous treat is a late mixed with dried fruit like dates and fig. The utilitarian look is nothing new, however this season we’re seeing it incorporated on everything from chic woolen pants to luxuriously crafted leather jackets at Balmain.

Today’s translation of the knitted two-piece can be seen in woolen layers from head to toe. Chunky ribbing, sweaters with woolly leggings, and cozy cocooning is perfectly practical yet totally luxurious.

Success is defined differently by everyone. In my book I encourage you to define what success means to you, then pursue it with all your passion. It isn't as complicated as people make it out to be as long as you remember to always be grateful and count your blessings. That’s why I always carry my tasbih (rosary) with me. It keeps me grounded. Whenever I'm feeling down or sorry for myself I hold it in my hand to remind myself how lucky I am. It's very important to connect to a more spiritual self. My other strong beliefs are that each of us has the power of manifestation and that There Are No Accidents. I call it the TANA Theory. It happened to me 26 years ago when I met Bruce Croxon, the co-founder of Lavalife, with whom I ventured into Interactive Voice Technology with. The rest is history.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR LIFE AS AN ENTREPRENEUR?

I’ve been an entrepreneur my whole life. I think I’m one of the few people who has never worked for anyone. Just for myself. It’s been a life of a few successes and many failures. I like talking about my failures because each taught me a lesson which I hoped not to repeat but inevitably some did. I have learnt that as an entrepreneur it is critical to recognize your strengths and weaknesses and own them, then hire people who know more than you and have skills that are complimentary to yours. I meet a lot of people who are very talented and I wonder why they are not out there being entrepreneurs. I think there is a lot of fear, a fear of failure, a fear of the unknown. Being an entrepreneur is incredibly risky; you must be prepared to bet the farm. You have to believe in yourself and be careless of what others think of what you are doing. One of my favourite quotes is by Napoleon: “Impossible is a word found only in the dictionary of fools.” As an entrepreneur every day you are faced with making the impossible possible.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR COMPANY

My company is called the Resultancy Group. We are hired as Resultants to deliver on outcomes that are challenging. If successful we are compensated handsomely, if not we do not get paid. It's all about the results and the outcome being sought. We are success driven. I'm involved in producing a comedy feature film, Pros and Cons, which is a passion project of mine. It's a comedy that I wrote. In January I am opening The Gates, an events venue housed in a designated heritage building and features exposed brick and late 19th century beams, hardwood floors, and soaring 12-foot ceilings.

I carry Kahlil Gibran’s book The Prophet with me all the time. I read it often, especially his writings On Children, On Giving and On Time. I encourage everyone to read this book. As I get older I become more introspective, looking back at my life. There were many mistakes but it is important to look at them in perspective. The way you acted or reasoned then would not be the way you act today. You are wiser and your priorities were different. One of my favourite philosophers is Goethe, and respect what he wrote on commitment: “Whatever you can do or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it. Begin it now.” My philosophy on life is summed up in my book when I write, “Life isn’t a series of accidents but a powerful combustion of commitment, focus and gratitude.” Within each of us there is a magic wand, which like Houdini you can use to make magic happen. I live to make Impossible, Possible.

I'm very casual. There was a time where I wore suits. Now I go more for the comfy look. I have my own style. I like the loose look, non-structured. I'm not loyal to one particular brand, I like to mix brands. I love scarves and don't like wearing socks. If I do wear socks they probably won't be matching.

WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF LUXURY?

I think it's changed a lot. Luxury to me is about being spoiled and spoiling oneself. I believe that’s what luxury means, it’s changed a lot. Certain labels epitomize luxury. Hermés, Brunello Cuccinelli and Loro Piana are my favourites. To me, luxury is also a state of mind. It's about self-indulgence in one’s self, which is important. It’s not to impress others. Luxury can be a pair of really old jeans that you love, with that cashmere sweater and the pair of John Lobb shoes you have worn forever. It’s about “elegance without arrogance”. It’s not to show off, but it makes you feel good about yourself. To me “uniqueness” and “service” are important words when you are defining luxury. Impeccable service is “de rigueur” when one talks about luxury. When you walk into a restaurant, hotel or retail store, the way someone talks to you and the knowledge they have about the product, how it's constructed, how it's made, that all adds to the quality experience.

T

he holiday season is already in full swing and if you’re not completely booked up for the next month then just wait a day or two... I’m sure the invitation is in the mail.

During this festive season, we find ourselves dashing from office parties to family get-togethers to drinks with old friends and then scrambling to make it to the Christmas concert on time. Oh, and don’t forget to visit your great aunt on the other side of the city, she has a card for you. Sure, we’re all busy right now, but rushing around trying to please everyone in our lives can be incredibly rewarding when we finally get to relax and soak it all in. The hunt for that perfect gift or surviving crowded airports just to get home for Christmas is always worth it in the end and I think there’s no reason this extra bit of effort we make this month shouldn’t extend to our wardrobe. With such a variety of events on your calendar, this is the perfect time to add some anchor pieces to your closet. You want to balance comfort, style and versatility so you can make smooth transitions from formal to casual events and back again. But, remember, that doesn’t mean you should look for something mainstream. You can still be bold and make a statement. Cracking the holiday dress code can be tricky, but it’s not impossible. One key to dressing for holiday success is finding the right footwear. You want something that can be a talking point, not something that shouts out across the room and knocks the drink out of your boss’s hand. A pair of bespoke shoes are definitely a talking point, and much more. This year, I’ve seen a small but significant shift away from the traditional black toward a dark blue, called deep indigo. These are delicately hand dyed and they come out beautifully. It’s incredible to think that indigo still looks new when it’s one of the oldest dyes in use for textile dyeing and printing, dating back to a number of different ancient civilizations. TECHNICAL NOTES BY OUR PHOTOGRAPHER ON HOW HE USED THE FULL-FRAME, PALM-SIZED SONY A7 AND A7S CAMERAS TO CAPTURE THE IMAGES FROM HIS JOURNEY TO NICARAGUA

This was the restaurant, the gathering place at Mukul, the luxury beach golf and spa resort on Nicaragua’s Emerald Coast. I used a tripod for this shot. I had the focus on manual – again, so I could play with the image. It was shot with an ASA of 400, a zoom lens, and the exposure at 1.6 and f-stop at 6.3. This was taken on the A7S.

I approached this man directly, holding the camera at my waist, not my eyes, so I could talk and take pictures at the same time. I was looking for a more natural pose, so when he said it was OK to take his picture, I had something where he was just being himself, more natural. The camera’s tilting viewfinder allowed for this affect. The automatic setting on the camera was also important, because I had no time to ensure things like depth of field were correct.

It doesn’t matter how sunny it is, you need a high ASA to accomplish this picture, being in a dense jungle. I had set an f-stop of f/10 for depth of field, and the speed at 1/640th of a second, because the woman in the bikini was moving, and I needed to freeze her. The Zeiss lens I used was 24-70 mm. I shot this with a 70-200 mm lens, physically a big lens for this camera, because I was 50 feet away from them. This is a totally animated photograph of two girls walking, both had one foot in the air, so you get the feel of motion. This pic captured the spirit of the country – a young country, after the revolution, that is moving forward. Those two girls represent hope for the country, a bright future. Both girls were neatly dressed, showing determination, walking forward.

I didn’t have a lot of time to shoot at Mukul, I was shooting quickly, so the advantage in capturing this was being able to shoot by hand, at a high ASA number to get the perfect picture without much grain, without needing to use a tripod. This one was shot on the A7S, with the ASA at 2000, at 1/160th of a second speed. She was playing baseball against the boys and was just dominating them. She was going for the fences with this swing, and I wanted everything slightly out of focus, except her, and the ball. I couldn’t rely on the camera’s automatic setting because the speed wouldn’t capture it. She was swinging that hard. The camera was set at 1/1250th of a second, on f-4, 400 ASA. I love this shot. It looks like a mural. I was just walking the streets of Granada, admiring the different walls, the different colours. This one caught my attention because of the design. The peeling paint created a really nice playful design. With the Sony camera, holding it with both hands, looking down at screen on horizontal, I can compose the picture better. I set the camera at 320 ASA, so I know it would be super clean and sharp. The speed was at 1/400th of a second to eliminate any impact from the shakes.

AN INVITE FROM ENCORE AT WYNN LAS VEGAS TURNED INTO A UNIQUE OPPORTUNITY TO EXPERIENCE VEGAS LUXURY AT ITS FINEST BY DARREN DOBSON

I

t is a rare opportunity indeed to be invited to go beyond being a passive observer and actually get to participate in a Las Vegas show. But that’s exactly the opportunity we received when Lush Luxury was invited by Encore at Wynn Las Vegas, one of the finest five-star properties on the strip, to enjoy Vegas luxury at its finest. The most unique part of the adventure was donning a scuba suit to take part in Le Rêve - The Dream, a theatric acrobatic water show like no other. The experience started when I was welcomed at Encore. Luxury offerings were aplenty – there are six bars and lounges, with 17 signature restaurants in the Wynn and Encore – on top of

a wide selection of leisure activities and designer boutiques. The next day started off with a magical “Four Hands Relaxation Ritual” at The Spa at Encore, performed by two synchronized therapists using rich oils that transform the body into a deep state of relaxation. After that, I was welcomed to stay and enjoy the saunas, steam showers and pools. Later that afternoon, I was given a tour of the resort’s extensive art collection. There was valuable art at every turn, including pieces that most guests may not notice as they walk through. After freshening up, I dined at Wing Lei, the first and only Chinese restaurant in North America to receive a Michelin star for culinary excellence.

WING LEI MAIN DINING ROOM

Wing Lei offers a decadent twist on early French-influenced Shanghai. The bright dramatic décor is as unique as its sumptuous cuisine, an eclectic mix of Cantonese, Shanghai and Szechwan cooking, all executed by Executive Chef Ming Yu. After dinner, a VIP Experience at Le Rêve – The Dream was arranged where I enjoyed exclusive seating with champagne, chocolatecovered strawberries and backstage television monitors to peer in on preparation and set changes, as the show unfolded before my eyes. Le Rêve was created by Franco Dragone and is presented exclusively at Wynn Las Vegas. The theatre was built specifically for this spectacle. Le Rêve – The Dream features jaw-dropping aerial acrobatics, mesmerizing choreography and intense live music with elaborate effects, beautiful imagery and powerful physical performances. The following day I was chauffeured in a new stretched Escalade from Presidential Limousine, Las Vegas’ leader in VIP Luxury Transportation, to the Las Vegas Speedway to experience Dream Racing. Once I entered the facility, one of the hostesses assisted me in the registration process. After registration, my fellow drivers and I moved into a classroom to watch an educational video. This

gives us a quick lesson on the mechanics of the racecar we were about to drive – a Ferrari F430 GT. Following that, we hopped into 3D simulators built to the specifications of the actual racing car, allowing drivers to practice steering, paddle shifting, familiarizing themselves with the pedals and dashboard before heading out to the track. Then we climbed into our professional racing suits and headed to the pits. Jumping into the car with an experienced instructor, it was time to start the engine, and lapped the track five times. This was one experience I will be repeating in the future. I was then whisked back to Encore for something truly rare – a backstage tour of Le Rêve – The Dream, where I was able to explore what goes into a Las Vegas production. The facility was huge, with multiple areas for the performers and the support team. From costume design and repair to change rooms and prop creation, it was an eye opener to see what goes on behind the scenes. Following the tour, I was fitted in a wetsuit so I could get ready for the “Diver’s Dream” Orientation. This session was a first-hand experience with the diving team of the show to familiarize myself with the theater-in-the-round and pool, which was a rare opportunity to see what it is like under water first-hand.

Throughout the performance, the group uses many different and unique props and the underwater stage moves up and down, depending on the theatrics being performed. After a couple hours of scuba diving around the circular stage, I felt at ease. While at Wynn, I came across La Cave for dinner. The restaurant has an inviting ambience of a cave in a castle with a barrel ceiling. With a wall of over 250 assorted fine wines on display for one to choose from, La Cave is a mix of contemporary American cuisine with an international influence. The menu offers an assortment of savory selections, including Ahi tuna served with avocado sweet chili on a crispy cracker,

salmon sashimi tostadas made with pickled red onions, and bacon-wrapped dates with bleu cheese fondue. A favourite from the oven section of the menu is the flatbread made with Nueske’s bacon and poached quail egg with fontina cheese. I opted for a grill-prepared dish of diver sea scallops on polenta cake served with shrimp sauce. After dinner, it was time to prepare for what would be a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience the Diver’s Dream Package at Le Rêve – The Dream during a live show, which is only available to certified scuba divers. Le Rêve – The Dream with the Diver’s Dream Package is promoted as an opportunity to

explore the vast depths of the aqua theater and experience a live show from under the water. It is the ultimate scuba diving experience available exclusively at Wynn Las Vegas, and Le Rêve is the only production show in Las Vegas to offer this rare experience to guests. The package includes a two-night stay in a deluxe resort room at Wynn or Encore, a VIP indulgence ticket to Le Rêve, a private backstage tour, SDI Certified scuba training session with the Le Rêve diving team and the unique opportunity to dive in a live show. The Diver’s Dream package is $1,750 for one diver and $2,450 for two divers. At 6:30 p.m., I arrived at the Wynn Theatre to be escorted backstage, where I was then directed to the dressing area to get my wetsuit on and meet with the diving team to go over the lineup and duties. My only job during the show as a guest was to shadow Le Rêve’s dive team and enjoy the show from under the water and watch how the swimmers move and how the stage changes with every act. It was spectacular to see the show from such an angle. Later that evening, I dined at the popular restaurant, Botero, located in the Encore Esplanade, where star chef Mark LoRusso

creates beyond-the-curve steaks, chops and modern cuisine that is as bold as it is voluptuous. The chef prepared a tasting menu, while the sommelier paired each entrée with an appropriate fine wine. The dinner was mouth- watering and unforgettable. Along with the welcoming ambiance was an attentive and gracious staff. The evening could not have been more magical. The following morning, Machine Guns Vegas had a driver pick me up at my hotel to go to their gun range for some target practice. Le FIZZ, a signature cocktail, is a refreshing libation feature with a perfect combination of fresh lime juice, some simple syrup for a hint of sweetness and St. Germaine Elderflower liqueur. This Le FIZZ version adds a touch of brut champagne to the already delectable delight and is capped off with ultra premium Grey Goose classic vodka and a little bit of egg whites to add texture and creaminess. A deep red Wild Hibiscus

repare to relax,” we are told, black type on a white wooden sign, perched off to the side of the road as we drive through the main entranceway of Ste. Anne’s Spa, in Grafton, Ontario, We have just bombed east on Highway 401, making a fast getaway out of the congestion of downtown Toronto. The oasis that is Ste. Anne’s is just a skip off Highway 401, just east of Cobourg. “Embrace your inner self” is another sign that greets us, driving up to our cottage on the 500-acre property.

What the sign painter doesn’t realize is we just spent an hour embracing our inner self, behind the wheel of the 2015 Porsche Macan Turbo. When it comes to relaxing while driving, behind the wheel of a premium vehicle, there isn’t a better way to go than Porsche. The Macan is an SUV that feels like a sportscar. That starts with many details in its design. Round lines combine with precision edges in strategic positions, all in harmony so you come across a vehicle that is compact, powerful and close to the road (we especially liked the side view – sporty, sloping roof line, sideblades at the bottom of the front and rear doors, creating a sculpted, sharp profile – a dynamic look and feel that was especially striking against the century-old architecture that marks Ste. Porsche’s all-wheel drive (Porsche Traction Management) produces a powerful drive system that combines tenacity and light-footedness when talking about off-road terrain driving. The cockpit reminds one of any high-end sportscar. Your eye locks in to the multi-function sports steering wheel (design is based on the 918 Spyder), forward-sloping centre console and a driver’s seat position ensuring a short distance between the steering wheel and gear selector. Everything you need in terms of key functions and settings are clustered in logical groups on the centre console, with buttons easy to reach. And everything here is designed to ensure the driver is spending their time with both hands on the wheel.

The Porsche Macan really is an extension of the spa experience – after some time, you find yourself planning a more scenic trip home, along Lake Ontario, where you can best enjoy the vehicle. “Keep Calm and Carry On”, the sign tells us, X as we pull out, for the drive home. ●

Another feature is the Burmester High-End Surround Sound system, available for the first time in a vehicle of this class. Other equipment options include the lane departure warning system and lane change assist system. “I didn’t want to brush against it,” is what Ste. Anne’s director of sales and marketing Wanda Hoehn tells us, as we sit down to chat, after seeing the Macan parked outside. We have arrived at Ste. Anne’s at night time, a tapestry of night lights and stars as our only guide. Signs aside, relaxation is the mantra here. Ste. Anne’s – voted Canada’s favourite spa by Spafinder readers nine years running – is open year-round, with 28 units of accommodations, including superior and deluxe units and spa cottages, as well as heritage suites. THE DUAL MOTOR MODEL S FROM TESLA HITS THE SHELVES JUST IN TIME FOR THE HOLIDAYS BY STEPHEN CLARK

I

t was an early holiday gift for Tesla – the introduction of the world’s first dual electric motor production car, as well as new safety and autopilot hardware, now standard on every new Model S. Nice storyline for a cold, bland November day. The old stereotypes when it comes to electric cars versus gasoline cars remain the same in the eyes of some – specifically in the areas of efficiency and pure performance. Of bigger performance when driving an electric car, though, is range. The new Tesla scores in all of these areas. The all-wheel-drive Model S P85D hits 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds (a full second quicker than the standard P85), with 155 mph as top speed – 687 lb-ft of torque. That level of acceleration is raising a few eyebrows among the gas-powered vehicle set. Conventional all-wheel-drive vehicles distribute power to the wheels from a single engine driving a complex mechanical transmission system. The new Dual Motor Model S has a motor on each axle (the new, smaller motor pack on the front packs an additional 221 hp into the car, for a combined 691 hp), digitally and independently controlling torque to the front and rear wheels. There’s an additional 50 percent of torque available from the new front drive unit. So that’s why you get the head-turning acceleration (remember, this is a four-door car), while retaining a high level of efficiency. of highway driving range compared to its rear motor Model S counterpart. One of the things we noticed was the way the vehicle held the road – a low centre of gravity giving drivers precise control of the vehicle in all conditions. Also, this new version of the P85 is around 200 pounds heavier than previous versions. The vehicle also scores on safety – a forward radar, 12 long-range sensors positioned to sense 16 feet around the car in every direction at all speeds, a forward-looking camera, and a high-precision, digitally controlled electric assist braking system. The new, standard hardware package will enable autopilot functionality. Look for future software releases for the car that will deliver a range of safety features using digital control of motors, brakes and steering to avoid collisions from all sides. The Model S will be able

to steer to stay within a lane, change lanes with the simple tap of a turn signal, and manage speed by reading road signs and using active, traffic aware cruise control. Then there’s the cool software features to come – like having the car check your calendar in the morning and calculate the travel time based on real-time traffic realities to your first appointment, automatically open the garage door, back out of the garage, and pull up to the door for the commute. It can also warm and cool your car to your preference, even set your favourite news or music stream remotely. Over-the-air software updates for the Tesla car will keep drivers at the forefront of driving technology. Tesla is taking orders now. Deliveries for North America begin in December 2014. The top X spec Model S P85D comes in at $137,900. ●

LEXUS TAKES DEAD AIM AT COMPETITORS LIKE THE BMW X3, AUDI Q5, AND MERCEDES-BENZ GLK WITH THE 2015 NX UTILITY VEHICLE BY STEPHEN CLARK

O

ne of the first things you notice about the new Lexus NX 200t SUV is the huge (signature) spindle grille and the aggressive creases, suggesting the vehicle was cast from one piece of metal. It’s a boldness in design for a vehicle going up against several other muscled competitors in an increasingly busy luxury compact SUV segment – BMW, Infiniti, Lincoln, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, Porsche, Acura all have similar offerings. So that first impression glancing at the NX 200t was a good one. There are two models being offered for the Canadian marketplace. The NX 200t, starting at around $40,950, is the first Lexus to be built around a twin-scroll, turbo-charged gasoline engine. The 2.0 litre Atkinson cycle powerhouse delivers up to 235 HP and 258 lb-ft of torque. That provides plenty of acceleration, when combined with a six-speed automatic Super ECT transmission and all-wheel-drive. Standard comfort and luxury features include dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power adjustable front seats, eight-speaker Lexus Display Audio system with Bluetooth connectivity, USB audio input and steering wheel-mounted controls, a TFT multi-information display, 7-inch VGA Centre Multi Display, and 17-inch aluminum alloy wheels. Premium packages for the NX 200t go up from there. The Premium Package (MSRP starting at $44,400) adds in things like heated steering,

18-inch aluminum alloy wheels, and heated and ventilated front seats with a driver’s seat memory system. The NX 200t Luxury Package (MSRP starting at $49,950) enhances the NX further with a 10-speaker audio system, leather seating, wood grain interior trim, and an advanced voice-activated navigation system with the Lexus Remote Touch Interface, among other features. The Executive Package (MSRP starting at $52,750) builds on the Luxury Package with features like Lane Keeping Assist, Pre-Collision System, Dynamic Radar Cruise Control and 18-inch alloy wheels. Then there’s the NX 200t F SPORT Series 1, which starts at $50,350. It builds on the Premium Package, adding a sport-tuned suspension, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, a G-Force meter, as well as signature details – including LED fog lamps, 18” alloy wheels, front grille, shift

knob, scuff plates, and badging. Other features in this package include a 10-speaker audio system, the Blind Spot Monitor and Rear Cross Traffic Alert systems, clearance and back-up sensors, and a voice-activated navigation system with the Lexus Remote Touch interface. Top of the line is the NX 200t F SPORT Series 2 (MSRP starting at $53,050), building on the Series 1 option with the Lexus Adaptive Variable Suspension System among other add-ons. But it wouldn’t the end of the story without a hybrid option. The 2015 NX 300h (MSRP starting at $58,850) is fully equipped, built around a Lexus Hybrid Drive specifically configured for the NX Series. Smooth, powerful acceleration, fuel efficiency is just 7.4 L per 100 km with minimal emissions. Consumers are pre-ordering the Lexus 2015 X NX now. ●

OCTOBER 22 – JANUARY 4, 2015 La Biennale de Montréal is an exhibition at Musée d’art contemporain de Montréal featuring artists working in film, sculpture, photography, painting and installation, who are responding to current conditions by considering what is to come. FEBRUARY 7 – MAY 10, 2015 Famous by age 20 for his groundbreaking drawings and paintings, Jean-Michel Basquiat (1960–1988) took the cultural hotbed of the New York art world by storm in the early 1980s. Basquiat gained international recognition by creating powerful and expressive works that confronted issues of racism, politics and social hypocrisy. Although his career was cut short by his untimely death at age 27, his works remain hugely influential. Basquiat marks the first-ever major retrospective of the artist’s work in Canada and will feature more than 140 large-scale paintings and drawings from private collections and public museums across Europe and North America.

The collection was an ancient offering to the Gallo-Roman god Mercury. After four years of research and conservation in J. Paul Getty Museum’s Antiquities Conservation Department, the exhibition is now on view at the Getty Villa, offering new insights about ancient art, technology, religion and cultural interaction.

JANUARY 25 – MAY 17, 2015 On July 29, 2015, it will be 125 years since Vincent van Gogh died. The Van Gogh Europe Foundation, a collaboration of 30 organizations, is rolling out a series of activities to mark the event and honour the Dutch artist. One of these is the exhibition Van Gogh in the Borinage, the birth of an artist, in the BAM Museum (Museum of Fine Arts). During his stay of almost two years in the Borinage (1878-1880) Vincent van Gogh ended his career as a preacher and chose to become an artist. In Belgium he quickly developed a love of the aspects of everyday life of peasants and workers. About 70 paintings and drawings from various international collections will be on display in this exhibition, including major loans from the Van Gogh Museum and the Kröller-Müller Museum.
