LOUIS VUITTON
fashion
TWEED Many designers incorporated this classic fabric for fall, with colour palettes ranging from deep navy to warm golds. We saw a variety of prints from checks to herringbone in forms of coats, pants, and warm tops. Our favourite came from Louis Vuitton’s two-piece look with its mini skirt and black accents.
trends
FOR FALL
STELLA TWEED AND AN EASTERN MCCARTNEY THE PANTSUIT While good tailoring never goes out of style, the woman’s pantsuit is back this season in a big way. Seen all over runways from Derek Lam to Stella McCartney, we saw a variety of chic ensembles. Feel free to experiment with a relaxed, oversized silhouette, or keep it classic with a slim cigarette trouser.

SUMMER 2015
INFLUENCE FOR HER, SHEARLING AND FLASHBACK TO THE 1970S FOR HIM: WE HAVE YOU COVERED BY YUKI BARTON
L
TOM FORD
EASTERN INFLUENCE A prominent trend for the season was incorporation of traditional Chinese motifs and colours. Runways were awash in elements such as crimson lace, gold embellishments, and even dragons at Valentino. We especially loved Tom Ford’s less literal variation in its gold gown with its mermaid-esque silhouette.
JIL SANDER
THE SLIP DRESS This nineties trend was reimagined for this fall in a variety of unexpected ways. We love the wearability of this trend, which can easily be appropriated to anyone’s personal style. We saw it reconstructed in contrasting colours, with high slits, thin straps, layered over pants, and trimmed with lace for an extra-femme look.
SONIA RYKIEL
THE DUSTER COAT This sophisticated number is a definite must-have. An eye-catching piece with practicality (especially for Canadians) we loved the luxe fabrics designers from Dries Van Noten to Sonia Rykiel came up with. Layer it over just about anything – turtlenecks, slips, maxi skirts, and trousers – it all goes this fall.
25
DRIES VAN NOTEN
TRIPLE LAYER LENGTHS We all know fall is the season for layering, but this time around, designers took inspiration from street wear and elongated the middle layer to create new silhouettes. Wrapped and draped in various ways, shows such as Dries Van Noten showed us how long hemlines can be a masculine statement piece.
3.1 PHILLIP LIM
DOUBLE OUTERWEAR A highly practical trend for Canadians is the layered outerwear ensemble. With endless possibilities, we saw designers incorporate it into their collection in various ways. Whether it’s a short coat under a long coat, down insulation under wool, two trenches, or contrasting textures, it’s a flexible trend we won’t mind trying.

SUMMER 2015
VALENTINO
SHEARLING Shearling jackets are nothing new, however it made a big statement this fall on the runways. This time they’re extra thick and cropped with the soft side out, like the Valentino number here. Complete the look with leather gloves, trousers, and minimal sneakers to be totally fall-ready.
MARNI LANVIN
THREE QUARTER Another practical trend we saw were the three quarter length coats. Seen in various fabrics and colours, the key to this one is to choose one that reaches just below the knee for a sharp, distinct allure. Lanvin did our favourite, in a classic army green, with rounded shoulders, and button closure.
MODERN 70S The most prominent trend of the season, the 70s have influenced the runways in a big way. From flyaway collars, to flared trousers and graphic detailing, we love how subtly the trend can be incorporated into the daily wardrobe. Our favourite was Marni’s modern interpretation, with the graphic shirt adding just enough interest to an otherwise classic look.

LL: HOW IMPORTANT IS FASHION IN YOUR PROFESSIONAL AND PERSONAL LIFE? JN: I love and appreciate fashion both in my professional and personal life. Whether I am dressing for a casual weekend or for a work day, I enjoy wearing pieces that are impeccably tailored and made of the finest fabrics. You only have one opportunity to make a good impression and your personal style speaks volumes. LL: WHY YOU HAVE CHOSEN VIA CAVOUR AS YOUR PREFERRED CLOTHING STORE IN TORONTO? JN: They are a specialty high-end boutique whose service and selection are second to none. I remember times when I have selected pieces which they wisely advised me against. This type of service where their concern is my style and lifestyle needs, more than getting the sale, is hard to find. Consistent service like this over the years is the reason they have earned my trust. There are occasions when I have seen pieces I like in other stores and I wait to visit Via Cavour to purchase the same item. The buying experience is better and they will make sure the item fits me perfectly and matches my lifestyle.
LL: WHAT IS YOUR DEFINITION OF LUXURY? JN: Personally, luxury elevates me and makes me feel special. My professional life is demanding on my time and I'm fortunate to love what I do but when I'm not working, how I spend my time is very important. Shopping at Via Cavour is a luxurious experience. When I'm buying a suit there are hundreds of material choices that could potentially work, but our relationship has evolved to them pre-selecting the top five choices that matches my needs and elevates my style. Less time spent on choosing material, more time spent on connecting and sharing X special moments with the guys: that's luxury. â—?
LL: WHAT ARE YOUR FAVOURITE BRANDS OFFERED AT VIA CAVOUR? JN: Loro Piana, Brunello Cucinelli and Pal Zaleri Sartoriale. LL: THERE IS NO SECRET THAT SANTO, FABIO AND CARMEN ARE THE DRIVING FORCE BEHIND THE UNIQUE SHOPPING EXPERIENCE AT VIA CAVOUR. EXPLAIN YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH THEM? JN: If I go shopping in the morning the first thing I'm offered is an espresso, in the evening it's wine. They all treat me like part of the family. Many years ago I had a big interview in Europe and Santo came to my house to help me pick out four outfits for the occasion; and I finally had the opportunity to offer him a glass of wine. This sums up the relationship, it goes beyond buying and selling clothes, it's more like family.

All but the leanest of patients will typically have a sufficient amount of fat that can be re-purposed for facial rejuvenation. Larger projects, such as those described below, may not be possible in those who are particularly skinny.
REDUCE, RE-USE, RECYCLE FILLER-UP People are more than ever seeking cosmetic treatments that are fast, effective, comfortable, and with minimal downtime. It should therefore be no surprise that injectable “fillers”, such as Restylane®, Juvederm®, and Teosyal® among others have become increasingly popular in recent years. When used correctly by a skilled injector these products can improve facial shape, restore fullness to deflated cheeks, and provide a gentle lifting effect. By achieving changes of this sort, beyond simply smoothing wrinkles, cosmetic doctors are better able to restore lost volume and correct the tell-tale consequences of aging. While enjoying great popularity and an impressive safety record, the vast majority of the injectable filler products are temporary in nature, becoming harmlessly broken down by the body over time. I have many of my clients, although happy with the results of their fillers, becoming weary of top-ups to their injections once or twice a year. Wouldn’t it be great if we had access to a filler product that was safe, effective but also longlasting? Fortunately Mother Nature has thoughtfully provided the solution, conveniently packaged with you in the form of your own fat tissue. FAT – WHERE IT’S AT When discussing rejuvenation by fat transfer many of my clients are delighted to hear that their muffin tops, belly bulges, and saddle bags can be “recycled” and put to good use.

YOUR OWN FAT – THE HOTTEST TREND IN COSMETIC SURGERY B Y D R . P E T E R W. B R AY, M D , M S C , F R C S (C ) W W W. D R B R AY P L A S T I C S U R G E R Y. C O M
These areas of excess are reduced using gentle liposuction; the fat is purified in the operating room and then prepared for careful, strategic injection into the areas in need of a boost. The newly transferred fat is re-integrated into the body and, after a few months, looks and behaves as if it has always been there. Unlike man-made filler products, the fat is completely natural, a part of your own body, so risks of allergies or “rejection” are eliminated. Although we anticipate some of the new fat to be absorbed by the body, the majority remaining after the first few months is essentially permanent. Because of the ready availability of fat, the effectiveness, and low-risk fat transfer has become one of the hottest topics in cosmetic surgery over the last few years. Many clients love the fact that they can avoid use of artificial substances and also enjoy the soft, natural texture of the transformed areas. FAT FOR FACES In the face, fat injection can be used to rejuvenate any of the areas commonly treated with man-made injectable fillers. Some of the most popular spots include the hollows under the eyes, sagging or deflated cheeks, deep creases of the nasolabial and jowl region, hollow temples, and droopy corners of the mouth. Because the amount of fat available is relatively large, it is possible for your surgeon to treat a greater number of areas and to a greater degree than in a typical session with off-the-shelf injectable fillers.
BUTTS AND BEYOND The use of fat transfer is not limited to rejuvenation of the facial region; it has become valuable for enhancement of other body areas as well. This technique is an essential component of the now-popular “Brazilian Butt Lift”. The goal of this procedure is to enhance and augment the buttock region such that flat, droopy bottoms have a more prominent, full and appealing shape. With this procedure I use new, energy-assisted liposuction technology to achieve better skintightening, enhancing the waistline and lower back for more curvaceous proportions. Fat transfer to the breasts is becoming a popular option to achieve improvements without man-made implants or visible scars. The fat can be used to gain a modest enhancement in size, correct mild asymmetries, or improve shape such as adding fullness to the upper breast. Although understandably much attention has been given to rejuvenation of the facial region, more clients are realizing that their hands show tell-tale signs of aging. Fat injection to the back of the hands is an effective, long-lasting method to camouflage prominent veins and tendons, fill-in hollow areas, and improve the smoothness and suppleness of the skin. LESS IS MORE With many excellent, minimally invasive aesthetic treatments available the ability of practitioners to rejuvenate and refresh their clients has never been better. But the biggest challenge has become, in my opinion, not what we should do for a client, but what we should not do. We have all seen the consequence of over-indulgence in injectable fillers and Botox®, sported by many celebrities and "Housewives-of-Wherever". The resulting “chipmunk cheeks”, “duck lips” and expressionless brows are unnatural and unattractive. The need for restraint, meticulous technique and a good aesthetic sense is particularly important with fat injection given that the results are longlasting and harder to reverse. Thus, potential clients should seek consultation with a Plastic Surgeon having vast experience with fat transfer techniques. By no means would I suggest that injectable fillers and Botox® are obsolete; in fact, these options remain the best 30 minutes anyone can spend on improving their appearance. Fat transfer will never be the best solution for everyone because the subsequent 1-2 weeks of swelling requires social downtime that may be excessive for some people. But with use of fat transfer and other minimally invasive techniques surgeons have the ability to achieve attractive, natural and long-lasting results with faster recovery and less risk than X ever before. ●

DREAM
ARTEMANO’S SHIMON FINKELSTEIN TALKS ABOUT HIS PASSION FOR INDIA, ONE OF THE FIRST PLACES HE AND HIS BUSINESS PARTNER EYAL SHOAM WENT TO FOR UNIQUE WOOD USED FOR ARTEMANO’S SIGNATURE FURNITURE PIECES
SCAPE LL: TELL US ABOUT YOUR FIRST EXPERIENCES SOURCING WOOD IN INDIA? WHAT WAS THE INITIAL APPEAL? I was drawn to India when we opened the first Artemano store in Laval, Quebec. I had visited a warehouse-style store that carried authentic Indian furniture and the smell of glue instantly struck me. It reminded and transported me back to when I was eight years old to my father’s carpentry shop. I didn’t know anything about wood or furniture, but instinctually I knew at that moment that this was the path I was to follow and travel on. LL: WHERE DO YOU GO THERE IN PARTICULAR? We visit India twice a year in the spring and fall. We attend shows and fairs in Delhi, where suppliers display their large array of products. We also visit suppliers in the province of Rajasthan. We collaborate closely with them to design our signature Artemano pieces. Each piece that we create is integral in building our enchanting ambiances, which evoke feelings of well-being and encourage relaxation.

LL: HOW OFTEN DO YOU GO THERE COMPARED TO OTHER COUNTRIES? India was the first country we sourced our goods from and to this day it plays a major role for us. It has taught us so much. When we visit India, it’s not just about the buying process and the business relationships. We pay attention to its people and its culture. India is a layered country filled with complexity and contradictions. During our visits we are constantly exposed to a plethora of clashing elements that make up the Indian cultural landscape. We chose to celebrate, admire, expose and elevate the beauty that India has to offer. This is Artemano lifestyle: to emphasize beauty in our lives and in our homes. That is why in our buying process, we purchase each piece as if it were for our own homes. LL: WHAT IS THE FEEDBACK FROM CLIENTELE ABOUT PIECES CREATED FROM WOOD FROM INDIA? The majority of customers love it. They’re amazed when they find out that the wood is naturally two-toned and that we haven’t altered it to make it look like that. The beauty of Rosewood is that

”
it’s a pure reflection of life. It has exposed and taught us that opposites, the whole idea of Ying and Yang, are an essential part of life. This idea has been implemented into the Artemano world. We combine opposing, different elements that together create magical landscapes. It’s not about the furniture. It’s about the escape and the emotional impact that we have on the majority of people who walk into our stores. It’s about striking a chord with people who are excited and transported by the creative atmospheres once they step across the Artemano threshold.
LL: TELL US ABOUT THE DIFFERENCE IN QUALITY? Quality is not measured by its perfection. The chorus of Leonard Cohen’s Anthem is part of Artemano’s genetic make-up and is inscribed within each and every one of our stores. We live by its words: “Ring the bells that still can ring Forget your perfect offering There is a crack in everything That’s how the light gets in. Without cracks there is no light.”
LL: WHERE IS THE LUXURY IN ARTEMANO PIECES MADE FROM WOOD FROM INDIA? Nature is the artist, it’s our guide. That’s the source of luxury. We are constantly learning form nature. We are its students. Nature is the ultimate perfection in décor. It’s our resource from which our ideas originate and which teaches us how to execute our furniture design and how to build our escapes.
The beauty and quality of nature is not measured by its perfection, but by how its cracks allow light to penetrate and shine through. Overall, we live in troubled times and we are in short supply of “light” in our life right now. We at Artemano, can’t offer solutions to the problems of the world. What we do offer is quality filled, soothing atmospheres; an escape that evokes endless X possibilities and dreams. ●

HANOI, VIETNAM
A rush of colour and a blur of people, Hanoi is the gateway to northern Vietnam. A more rustic, traditional view of the country than Ho Chi Minh City, the capital is a dizzying mix of the old and the new, with modern buildings co-existing alongside its historic landmarks such as Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum and Hoa Lo Prison. The Old Quarter is one of the most popular destinations for tourists and locals alike. A mixture of ancient Vietnamese and French colonial architecture, its manic streets are full of people, motorbikes, narrow merchant alleyways and relaxing bars. Otherwise, trawl the chaotic stalls at Dong Xuan Market, take a stroll around Hoan Kiem Lake and make sure you take in Long Bien Bridge at sunset for some truly spectacular views. As for food, the local speciality Bun Bo Nam Bo, marinated beef in a sweet and salty noodles, is a must try, while Hoan Kiem Bia Hoi is the place for drinks – the bars along the street are infamous. MUST VISIT: Long Bien Bridge. The perfect place to spend a Hanoi sunset (and get that perfect Instagram shot!) http://www.vietnamonline.com/ attraction/long-bien-bridge.html
SIEM REAP, CAMBODIA The fastest growing settlement in the region, Siem Reap has reinvented itself from provincial backwater to the epicentre of Cambodian chic, all with the help of the incredible Angkor ruins, the nearby attraction that helps draw more than 2 million visitors every year. A sprawling World Heritage-listed array of ancient temples, the Angkor ruins is one of the world’s most amazing historical sites. Running along the north shore of the Tonle Sap, Cambodia's ‘Great Lake’, Angkor is home to such beautiful ruins as Beng Mealea, Bantaey Srei, and the holy mountain Phnom Kulen, though its focal point is undoubtedly the magnificent Angkor Wat. The ruins are easily accessible from Siem Reap via bus, car, hot air balloon and, if you want to get into the local sprit, a rented tuk tuk. The town itself has recently undergone a huge transformation and now features state of the art, stylish hotels, bars and restaurants. Asana, however, is a more conventional Cambodian establishment serving up classic cocktails made with infused rice wine. You can even have a go at making them yourself – Khmer cocktail classes available at US$15 per person. MUST VISIT: Angkor Ruins. BARCELONA, SPAIN
The capital of Catalonia, Barcelona combines everything that is desirable about Mediterranean cities – months of endless sunshine, a leisurely pace of life, a world class dining scene – with the added element of renowned modern and ancient architecture and boundless culture to mark itself out as one of the most popular city breaks in Europe. Las Ramblas, the tree-lined pedestrian street in central Barcelona, is the tourist epicentre but away from its heaving bars and street performers awaits a beguiling mix of architecture stretching back 2,000 years. Highlights include the shadowy lanes and 14th century cathedrals of the Gothic quarter and the array of Gaudi’s work scattered across the city, of which Catholic church Sagrada Família is unmissable. The long and celebrated tradition of Catalan cooking is evident everywhere. Simple ingredients such as seafood, jamon (cured ham) and market fresh-produce are served up in Basque-style tapas bars, Galician seafood taverns and avant-garde Japanese restaurants – remarkable delicacies in captivating settings. If you are in the mood for dancing, Barcelona has it covered. Electronica and indie rock and roll are represented by nightclubs Sala Apolo and Razzmatazz respectively. Not forgetting, of course, the beautiful beach next to the deep blue Mediterranean Sea where you can sleep off a post-party hangover… MUST VISIT: Sagrada Famila. ROME, ITALY
The Eternal City is approaching 3,000-years-old but the combination of artistic heritage and modern culture makes Rome the most unique of cities. The sheer amount of historic architecture in Ancient Rome is almost daunting, but every single one of the major landmarks is worth investigating. The Coliseum, the jaw-dropping hub of the Roman Empire, is perhaps the most famous of the ancient buildings and should be your first call, but make time to see the Pantheon and Forum, too. The city’s numerous squares – most notably Piazza Navona and Spanish Steps (especially at sunset) – are also a hive of activity. And of course, no trip to Rome would be complete without a trip to the Vatican, where the Sistine Chapel and St Peter’s Basilica are must-see feats of architectural brilliance. If you happen to be there on a Sunday, make sure you attend the Pope’s weekly midday address to the gathered masses. For keen foodies, there is nothing more Roman than eating and drinking well. Take advantage of the hundreds of restaurants, pizzerias, trattorias and gelaterias, because nothing beats al-fresco dining on a sumptuous city-centre piazza. Must Visit: Freni e Frizioni, the hip new bar – created in the remains of an old car garage – that is attracting an arty crowd with top class cocktails and a sumptuous early evening buffet. http://www.freniefrizioni.com/ (TOP TO BOTTOM) INSIDE ST. PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC
If it is picturesque scenery, fairy-tale architecture and world class beer that you want, Prague is the city for you. Since the 1989 Velvet Revolution that freed the Czechs from communism, Prague’s reputation as a happening city has been growing with every passing year and its millennium old structures now share billing with its modern attitude to food and drink. One of Europe’s best-preserved cities, there is potential for exploration everywhere. The Old Town hosts charming café’s, cool bars, and ancient chapels; Malá Strana (the ‘Little Quarter’) links to Prague’s scenic centrepiece Charles Bridge, while the New Town boasts museums, impressive architecture and the main shopping streets. On the hunt for world class beer, both U Zlatého tygra and U Černého vola are beloved, traditional Czech alehouses that give tourists a glimpse into the past. Tankovnas, or tank pubs, are for the real connoisseurs – beer is pressed straight out of tanks at high pressure, giving a fuller flavour. Opened in 1843, U Pinkasů is the long-standing specialist tank pub – even Bill Clinton visited when he was U.S. President. The selection in Prague’s pubs has never been so impressive (or plentiful) so get used to asking for Velkopopovický Kozel, Kout na Šumavě and Svijanský Rytíř. MUST VISIT: U Pinkasů. One of the six ancient cities of China, the capital is a hybrid of invaluable cultural heritage and innovative contemporary structures, making Beijing as captivating as it is complex. Transformed almost overnight in preparation for the 2008 Olympics, it is nonetheless the imperial delights that shine brightest. The Great Wall is an awe-inspiring, meandering beauty and undoubtedly one of the greatest sights on earth, while The Forbidden City, the largest ancient palatial structure in the world, is the imperial heart of the city. The Temple of Heaven and nearby Summer Palace are also unmissable. Foodies will revel in the local menus; a dazzling mix of the very best of the myriad styles of Chinese dishes and, thanks to the country’s booming economy, the best food from around the world. Temple Restaurant Beijing (TRB), situated in the shadow of Zhizhusi, a hitherto forgotten Tibetan temple, is the hottest booking in town, offering phenomenal European cuisine and impeccable service. For those interested in Chinese culture, Beijing is the focal point for China’s ever-expanding artistic output. Museums, galleries, music venues and traditional Chinese performing art are all housed here. The National Museum of China has proved extremely popular since its £2.5 billion dollar makeover, while venues such as Yugong Yishan and Mao Live House are gaining a reputation for excellent programming of both local and international acts. MARRAKECH, MOROCCO
Marrakech is one of the imperial cities of Morocco, and undoubtedly its most intoxicating. Divided into two distinct parts – the old historical city, Medina, and Ville Nouvelle, the modern district – this destination combines its traditional craft heritage with a new European outlook and is just a few hours from the Sahara Desert. An entire day can easily be whiled away walking around the old city’s souks as they are known, seeking out cut-priced goods between the people-packed alleys. Tourists tend to pay a little more, but remember to haggle! Adjacent to the Souks is Djemaa El-Fna, which is a hive of activity day and night with acrobats, sooth-sayers, musicians and food stalls. After dusk, expect exotic aromas, entertaining sights and hypnotic music at volume. Altogether different activities are on offer just outside the city. Ville Nouvelle has art galleries (the David Bloch Gallery is recommended), fine eateries (female run traditional restaurant Al Fassia remains a big draw) and a nice line in drinking establishments. Kechmara, with its alfresco roof terrace, and Jack Is Back, popular for its late-night action, are two desired destinations. Further out of Marrakech, Palmeraie is the place for camel riding and taking in the beautiful views. MUST VISIT: The Souks. For a sample of the real, traditional Marrakech http://souk-cherifia.com/

PARIS, FRANCE
No matter how familiar Paris might feel, there is no substitute for the experiencing first hand of its iconic architecture, exquisite food, artistic treasures, chic boutiques and the vibrant collection of distinctive villages that make the French capital one of Europe’s major metropolises. Visitors simply must stroll the banks of the Seine, lose yourself in the narrow streets of Montmartre, see the sprawling city stood atop the Arc de Triomphe and take in the views at Notre Dame and the Eiffel Tower. One of the great art repositories of the world, and home to the Mona Lisa, the Louvre is the jewel in an artistic crown, displaying art ranging from Egyptian artefacts to work by Italian masters Raphael and Michelangelo. Among the countless other significant galleries, Centre Pompidou and Musée d’Orsay are also cultural goldmines. Synonymous with fashion and shopping, Paris offers both high end designer brands at the vanguard of international trends and cool, boutique vintage stores. Exclusive designer shops are found in the 8th, while flea markets are situated in Porte de Montreuil, 20th, and St-Ouen/Porte de Clignancourt. And then there is the food. Its reputation for fine dining precedes it, and Paris’ cuisine lives up to its lofty standing. Whether it is Michelin-starred extravagance – world-renowned chef Alain Ducasse’s Le Jules Verne – or cosy neighbourhood bistros – the newly opened and highly recommended Ratapoil du Faubourg – you’ll find the meal for you. With each and every quarter offering its unique character, Paris combines heart, sophistication, bohemia and grandeur – it is easy to see why it is one of the most visited cities in the world. MUST VISIT: After looking at all that art, indulge in a cocktail at Le Saut du Loup on the ground floor of the Musée des Arts, where you can gaze across the beautiful Tuileries gardens. http://www.lesautduloup.fr/ (TOP TO BOTTOM) EIFFEL TOWER, ERECTED IN 1889. BERLIN, GERMANY
The German capital is one of the most stimulating creative hubs in Europe, where hedonism meets history. A cutting edge destination for culture, architecture, nightlife and shopping, Berlin also retains its historic significance with its vast array of museums. The city’s dual interests are best summed up by The Kulturforum, low-rise museum complex south of Tiergarten hosting world-class art galleries, and Museum Island, a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site home to five of Berlin’s most significant museums, including Pergamonmuseum, one of the world’s major archaeological museums. The remnants of the Berlin Wall are still a huge tourist attraction and time should be put aside to take a tour along the historical milestone. Café culture is such that the cafés, the pick of which is Bonanza in Prenzlauer Berg, are open all hours, while pubs, beer gardens and cocktail bars are omnipresent. For die hard clubbers, from basement parties to techno super-clubs, the city’s stamina for partying is unequalled. Berghain, the undisputed home of European techno, is open every hour of the weekend. Winters can be harsh, but summer in Berlin is particularly eventful, when city dwellers hit the streets, rivers and lakes – Grunewald forest, largest forested area, is particularly popular – to drink in the cultural happenings across this most bohemian of cities. MUST VISIT: Stay at The Loft Berlin: two quirkily designed apartments on the 21st floor of a 1967-built Plattenbau, each with spectacular views of the city around Alexanderplatz.

NEW YORK, USA
A global centre for everything from entrainment, finance, fashion and cuisine, New York is the world’s trendsetter. World class museums (MoMA, Guggenheim) fight for the spotlight with unforgettable landmarks (Statue of Liberty, Wall Street skyscrapers) to create the most iconic landscape in the world. Brooklyn Bridge gives revellers a wonderful view of the city, while Central Park is the perfect escape from it – popular with New Yorkers as well as tourists, it is the most visited urban park in the U.S. But the best thing about New York is that the entertainment is so vast, the cultural offerings so rich, that you can plot out exactly the type of Big Apple adventure you want to experience. The surrounding five boroughs – Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, The Bronx, and Staten Island – boast their own unique personalities and are essentially cities in their own right, while the sheer scale of art, shopping and dining available – no matter your budget – is overwhelming. From the glitz of Broadway to improv comedy and from extravagant opera productions at the Lincoln Centre to sweaty rock music shows in basement bars, New York caters for your night on the tiles. It is impossible to travel to New York and experience everything on offer in one go, but the thing to remember is that New York is there for the taking – be brave, dive in and make the most of your time. BOND AND HIS CARS
THE ASTON MARTIN DB10, CALLED A “NON-HUMAN CAST MEMBER” BY SPECTRE DIRECTOR SAM MENDES.
FAST CARS HAVE BEEN AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE JAMES BOND FRANCHISE FOR OVER 50 YEARS. AS THE FORTHCOMING 007 FILM SPECTRE FEATURES A SPECIALLY DESIGNED ASTON MARTIN, WE TAKE A LOOK AT THE ENDURING RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE LONGEST RUNNING FILM SERIES AND LUXURY MOTORS. BY SHAUN CURRAN

hink of James Bond, and certain elements automatically spring to mind – the often implausibly death-defying feats, innovative and revolutionary gadgets, the array of beautiful Bond girls, the shaken but under no circumstances whatsoever stirred Martinis. Alongside those staples of the 007 character go the luxury supercars – often with the addition of the aforementioned beautiful Bond girl in the passenger seat – that have for 50 years helped define the longest ever continuing film series, handing our spy hero a stylish vehicle to complement his fearless cunning. So synonymous with the Bond brand are these cars, in fact, that from Toyota to Lotus, and from Mercedes to Aston Martin – whose DB5 model is the quintessential Bond automobile – to have your car featured in a Bond film has become a badge of honour to luxury car manufacturers the world over, adding a cache of otherwise unattainable cool.

The long standing tradition of high end collaboration began with the first film Dr No, back in 1962 – the Sunbeam Alpine was Bond’s first car, with no alterations by Q’s laboratory – but it was actually three films into the series, 1964’s Goldfinger to be precise, that Bond’s car became integral to the franchise. It was then that the Aston Martin DB5 made the first of its 11 appearances – this time driven exquisitely by Sean Connery – changing the course of cinematic, and luxury auto, history. Because Ian Fleming’s original Goldfinger novel had placed Bond in an Aston Martin DB Mark III, the film’s producers decided to use the company’s latest model, the DB5, first launched in 1963 and discontinued in 1965. A luxury grand touring car powered by a 282-horsepower 4.0 litre engine, it forged the template for the machines to follow. With a range of state-of-the-art amenities – in-built telephone, reclining seats, electric windows,

Bond can now brag about what amounts to his own exclusive Aston Martin. With his beloved DB5 blown up spectacularly in predecessor Skyfall, for Spectre, the 24th film in the series, Bond has been handed an Aston Martin DB10, a specifically designed car for Bond’s eyes only. Influenced by its DB5 ancestor, only 10 have been produced – eight for the film and two for archive purposes – and the model will never be made available for retail purchase.
wool pile carpets, chrome wire wheels and full leather upholstery – the DB5 featured on screen in Goldfinger also boasted a range of features required by every smooth talking international jet setting spy. With a smoke screen, bullet proof windscreen, extending bumpers, a radar tracker, tire slasher, twin machine gun sidelights and even an ejector seat that allowed Bond to escape the throes of peril, Aston Martin had redefined the Bond car for generations to come. Coloured in distinctive Silver Birch, sales of the Aston Martin DB5 increased considerably, and the profile of the company grew exponentially as a result. As time has elapsed, technology has developed and as the series has, over time, become the third-highest grossing film franchise to date, Bond’s cars have become ever more ostentatious. The Lotus Espirit in 1977’s Roger Moorestarring The Spy Who Loved Me, is almost as famous as the DB5. A first generation model

of a car that was built from 1976-2004 with a rear-mounted 2.0-litre engine, its ability to turn into a submarine and torpedo, death charge and launch surface to air missiles helped make the film a huge hit. In contrast, some 007 product placement hasn’t always had the desired effect. By the mid-1990’s, with producers keen to relaunch Bond for a newer generation, BMW were the chosen partners for a trilogy of films, but the Z3 in Goldeneye was derided as nothing more than an underpowered advertisement for the company. The Z8 in The World Was Not Enough, with its Henrik Fisker-designed, sleek high performance 400-horsepower V8 engine, fared much better. The film’s version of the vehicle had radar-guided stinger missiles and remote control pads on the keyfob, as well as the addition of six different cup holders in the dashboard. Fighting the international forces of evil is thirsty work, after all. But for all of the (in)famous cars in Bond’s sprawling collection, Aston Martin have always been the jewel in the crown – a fact not lost on Sam Mendes. The director of Skyfall has upped the automobile ante considerably as he takes on direction duties for the forthcoming Spectre, and five decades into a special relationship, Bond can now brag about what amounts to his own exclusive Aston Martin. With his beloved DB5 blown up spectacularly in predecessor Skyfall, for Spectre, the 24th

film in the series, Bond has been handed an Aston Martin DB10, a specifically designed car for Bond’s eyes only. Influenced by its DB5 ancestor, only 10 have been produced – eight for the film and two for archive purposes – and the model will never be made available for retail purchase. It’s a huge blow for both Bond and Aston enthusiasts. With the British car brand’s chief creative officer Marek Reichman leading the design, the DB10 cars used in the film are based on the V8 Vantage structure, and utilise that model's 4.7-litre V8 engine, albeit considerably wider, at 2109mm overall. Introducing new aluminium platform for the next generation of Aston Martin models, it adopts an engine from AMG, the performance division of Mercedes, giving a glimpse into what to expect from Aston Martin in the future. As the trailer for Spectre aptly illustrates, the sleek silver vehicle will look great as it evolves into the brand’s road cars by 2016. Mendes, himself involved with the car’s design, has called the DB10 “a non-human cast member,” such is its beauty, not to mention integral importance to the narrative of the newest Bond adventure. But in truth, the same could be said of the majority of the vehicles that have, from Dr No to Spectre, featured in Bond films over the last five decades – and the next 50 years are likely to be even more fast, furious X and spectacular for 007. ●

ean Streets meets the M6. That’s what it felt like to us anyway. A humid July afternoon in Manhattan, we had just parked the 2016 BMW M6 Coupé down a short side street near Little Italy (Jersey St., off Crosby St., to be exact). The car had already more than hit the mark on our checklist for long distance driving trips (nine hours from Toronto, or over 800 km, south of Gananoque, across the Thousand Islands Bridge, and down Interstate 81): sheer pep and muscle, ease and sophistication of navigation system, comfort of seating, sound system, driving safety systems. I was looking for that unique photograph that contrasted the refined, über luxury aesthetic of the car and the gritty confines of a New York side street, the car nestled up against the back of one of those century-old apartment buildings, with the Iron Z fire escapes, a welcome refuge for New Yorkers during the steamy summer months before the age of air conditioners. We found one we liked. I parked the car. That’s when the “X” factor of our driving trip kicked in. Or should I say, the “It” factor.

EIGHT DAYS BEHIND THE WHEEL OF THE NEW BMW M6 TWO-DOOR COUPÉ DURING A ROAD TRIP FROM TORONTO TO NEW YORK, THEN UP THROUGH CAPE COD AND BOSTON, ELICITED A REACTION TO A LUXURY CAR WE HAD NEVER SEEN BEFORE STORY AND IMAGES BY MARK KEAST
75
Casual passers-by within minutes became active participants in a photo shoot that was originally only supposed to last a few minutes. First it was Sammy, a former BMW M3 owner, who walked up with questions about the M6, then his girlfriend Gill, a photographer herself who wanted to shoot my wife next to the car (my wife wearing her “Toronto Versus Everybody” tank top). Murphy started taking photos on his camera phone. Douglas started barking orders, telling me how and where to angle the car, because he “wants” an old New York cab in the background of the shot, so you know you are in New York, and “not some place like Trenton”. The average pedestrians walking down Lafayette St., who happened to stroll into the shot, got an onslaught of verbal assaults from this crew of hardcore, blue collar Manhattanites, ordering them out of the way. We had to get the shot just right, you see.

This all came together within five minutes. Fifteen minutes later they were done with the shoot. Hugs all around. And they were gone. The buzz factor was the underlying story over the eight days with the car: strangers off the beaches of Cape Cod, walking up, asking about the car, a motorist driving up below the Manhattan Bridge, rolling his window down to comment enthusiastically, thumbs up from drivers on an Interstate heading north to Boston, enquiries from a twenty-something on a motorbike at a gas stop just east of New Haven, Conn. – just to name a few. In all the years I have been driving luxury cars, I can honestly say no car has ever elicited this intensity of reaction. Through the streets of Manhattan, from our home base – the W New York Union Square – we drove to the Bowery, to Little Italy and Chinatown, across the Brooklyn Bridge, up through Brooklyn Heights (past Truman Capote’s old house), back to the Meatpacking District, north east to Cape Cod on Interstate 95, then to Boston, and home to Toronto. The M6 Coupé is no ordinary machine. It balances dynamics, aesthetic, luxury and innovation. In terms of driver assistance technology, this is about as close as you come to a car driving itself (and God strike us down if we ever reach that point). The driver assistance systems and mobility services from BMW ConnectedDrive are all aimed at two things: convenience and safety. The link-up between driver, car and outside world is simple and seamless: iDrive controller where your right arms rests, enhanced Bluetooth and USB interface, BMW eCall system and BMW TeleServices, as well as data transfer for other functions, such as ConnectedDrive Services Advanced Real Time Traffic Information for the navigation system.
Along the longer stretches of Interstate highways, especially during rain storms, the car really set the mark, the 4.4-litre M turbocharged V8 engine giving that jolt to buzz past transport trucks (the M6 accelerates from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.2 seconds), spitting up grit and water onto the windshield. I was also thankful for the M6’s superlative traction and handling during those wet conditions. The M6 features 20-way power front-heated multi-contour seats, with adjustable backrest width and thigh support, and active head restraint, so for a tall guy, driving that distance, that level comfort seating also had a big impact. In the end though, the difference-maker with the M6 came down to sheer charisma. The final words as we left the W Hotel came from the guy loading the luggage into the back of the M6: X “Love your car, man,” he said. ●
CAPE COD
The Heads-Up Display, which projects relevant driving information onto the windshield using a full spectrum of colour – right in the driver’s field of view – is another great feature when driving long distances, flashing information like lane recommendations and speed limits. That was most helpful during this trip, especially at moments like when we emerged from the Holland Tunnel into Manhattan, and the full spectrum of pedestrian and automobile traffic, construction and overall bedlam in one of the world’s busiest cities greeted us. Your chosen route is mapped out on a fixed, high resolution 10.2 inch colour navigation display. Voice control is another feature, as is another favourite when driving long distances: POIs (points of interest) are listed as a symbol (hotels, restaurants, gas stations etc.) on the screen. When I saw the car for the first time, then sat in it, before starting it up, I thought: bespoke luxury meets a true sport car experience. The M Sport Edition features 20-inch M wheels, M sport steering wheel and M aerodynamic exterior treatment, along with a leather dashboard, ventilated front seats contrast stitching and soft-close doors.

LINEN IS THE CASHMERE OF SUMMER BY ANDRE FORSYTHE
Y
es! We Love Bespoke Tailoring! It is what we at Md live for, and are proud to offer our clients. However, this summer we were afforded the opportunity to collaborate with the inimitable Whitney Westwood, her brand Whitney Linen and her lead designer Francisca Veress to create our first Ready to Wear Spring Summer ’16 Collection! What an opportunity! Our first thoughts, like with most instances of change, were the barriers to the process. That while linen is an exceptional fabric in our suiting choices, it seems so limiting for a Men’s Ready to Wear Collection. Old Fashioned! Rough on the Skin! Horrible to travel with! Expensive to maintain! Boring! These, as in turns out, are the exact perceptions that Whitney Linen is tearing down. “Darling! Linen is the Cashmere of the Summer!” Whitney said to us, radiating charm and a perspective informed by her formable years spent living in the Cote D’Azur. She proceeded to provide us with the softest, most luxurious and washable linen we’d seen in a long time and gave us a mandate to push the boundaries, to challenge our preconceptions of linen. Whitney explained her vision to expand the classic fabric and markets of linen into a contemporary environment. An environment where the classic role of linen is respected and elevated. An environment where linen is afforded its rightful home within an urban landscape and with a wider audience. Challenge Accepted! Our reticence turned to excitement, as we applied our sartorial experience to our first Menswear collection. We fell immediately in love

with the textures, the elegant hand of the fabric that quickly swept our thoughts to sensuous escapes of Nice, Mustique and Bali; that feeling that only linen can provide. But we pushed our thoughts further to give linen a renewed relevance in Barcelona, Los Angeles, Rio and Bangkok. We could not be more pleased with the outcome of the collection. Though the irony of which did not escape us. A linen collection, designed and manufactured in the beautiful tropical paradise of … Toronto? Canada, the inventors of cold, and the Canada Goose, creating a collection for South American Climate? Thankfully those of us who live here know two essential things about Toronto: First, Our summer temperatures get just as hot as our winters are cold. Secondly, the best way to survive winter … is to migrate south. As a result this uniquely positions us to inform our collection with both a comprehension of urban demands and an adaptation to tropical climates, that an acclimatized tropical resident (blessed as they clearly are) may not possess. What a surprise it was to have the honor of Lennox Lewis and the team at Global Legacy
Boxing to agree with us whole heartedly, as they chose to adorn their fighters, male and female, in our debut Md for Whitney Linen Spring/ Summer ’16 collection for the Sept. 11 World Championship Fight hosted in Toronto, and for the rest of their season. And so in the dying days of the Summer, we were blessed with blissful temperatures, some of the most perfect of the year, as we presented the all linen collection on a beautiful runway, at what couldn’t be a more perfect venue, and perfect host for what has grown into an exceptional collaboration, at Queen West’s Only One Gallery (www.onlyonegallery.com). So this year as we head into the gifting season, amongst our shirts, ties, and suits, now aligns a linen collection that we hope our friends, family and clients are as excited about as we are. We look forward to the growth of this collaboration, and are extremely thankful for the support, and patience of the aforementioned X family, friends and clients. ● For a better look at the collection, you are more than welcome to visit us, or check us out online.
