YULA BoYs HIGH SCHOOL

Leadership BOARD OF DIRECTORS

David Nagel, RABBI ARYE SUFRIN HEAD OF SCHOOL

We began our historic 40th year at YULA with high expectations. We had visions of enhanced limud Torah, excellency in our maths, sciences, chessed opportunities and areas of personal growth. This year has brought challenges we never thought possible, yet our focus remained strong. Our theme this past year was #CharacterStrong, that no matter what, we go above and beyond to sanctify G-d’s name through our actions. We began the year with character strong moments on campus, and ended the school year holding each other up with character strong moments virtually. Together we have seen that Emunah in HaShem and the achdut of our community lead us through uncertainty. What makes YULA so special is the connections that we have. The connection of our students and Rebbeim, the connection of our staff members with each other, the connection of our lay leadership with our administration and the connection of our parents with our staff. We have shown that no matter how

I am proud to present this year’s Annual Report, highlighting the many accomplishments that YULA has achieved in its 40th year. During this past year we were blessed with a record year in fundraising for our Operating Budget. These events included: (1) In the fall, we held one of the largest golf tournaments in Los Angeles with more than 200 players and $700,000 raised; (2) In the winter we honored long time board member and proud YULA parents Brian and Lesley Kleinman at our Chanukah Brunch raising in excess of $85,000; and (3) In the spring, we held our Annual Trustees Event honoring Dani ‘86 & Rivkie Samson and Alumni of the Year, our golf committee co-chair, Michael Bernstein ’98 which raised boys and girls school. These monies collectively have allowed us to make our quality education available to all families in our community regardless of income. Notwithstanding, in the world of education the pandemic impact has been an enormous challenge. Costs are up and tuition revenue is down. Yet, as we were tasked with the hard decision to move YULA’s education off of our beautiful campus, I have watched our administration guide the transition from classroom to online learning with determination, poise and expertise. Our teachers and staff worked tirelessly to maintain a sense of normalcy for our students and parents, and our Board and lay leadership doubled their efforts to support and guide the school’s Administration. It is because of your partnership, big and small, that we were able to secure way and it is because of your commitment to next year that we plan for continued growth to further our mission of educating the next generation of Jewish leaders. On behalf of myself and the Board of Directors we thank you all for your ongoing support and partnership.

Turn it and turn it, for everything is in it. —PIRKEI AVOT (5:6)

pRimAcy And RelevAncy of toRAH As a proud Yeshiva high school, our aim is to instill within our students a passion for serious Torah middot tovot, and love for Medinat Yisrael. To a YULA student, Torah is never archaic. It always has relevance, a sense of transcendent purpose, and serves as a guide and inspiration for the way we live our lives. Through learning Gemara, Halacha, Chumash, Navi, classical texts of Rishonim and Achronim, Israel education, and Jewish philosophy, our curriculum is built and taught with primacy and relevancy in mind.

Stops! MACHSHAVA: JEWISH THOUGHT Students, alumni and staff came together to publish volumes 3 and 4 of Divrei Hitorerut this year. Thank you to David and Marnie Nagel who sponsored the Yomim Noraim edition in memory of Mr. Jack Nagel z”l. The Pesach edition was sponsored anonymously in honor of the YULA rebbeim and faculty.

TALMUD The masmidim have learned close to 200 daf gemara since the Jacob & Lea z”l Friedman Family Masmidim Program’s inception four years ago! This year these talmidim were mesayem Masechet Makot and Masechet Sota. Mazel tov! Students in the Baum Family Advanced Gemara Track (AGT) experienced our new and improved night seder experience, ‘Fire Seder’ which has generated excitement beyond belief! YULA partnered with NCSY and dozens of Yeshiva High Schools across the country to TANACH The Tanach Masters classes progressed beautifully in mastering reading, translation skills as well as advanced analysis of the text of Sefer Bamidbar. The TM II class engaged in “solo” projects to research and write an article on a chapter of Tehillim. YULA students produce a weekly Torah publication, Lekutei Ohr, which is shared in shuls throughout the community featuring Divrei Torah submitted by both faculty and students. YULA students contribute to Kol Hanearim quarterly collection of Divrei Torah from various Yeshiva high school students across the country.

JEWISH LAW Our monthly Medical Ethics Seminar with Rabbi Jason Weiner started the year in Cedars Sinai’s Simulation Lab and continued virtually on YULA Babayit. It has been an incredible opportunity for our students to learn in-depth Halacha involving medicine. Rabbi Shlomo Einhorn ‘96, Dean of Yeshivat Yavneh, continued to inspire students through the Let’s Have a Conversation: Q & A Fire Away monthly seminar covering varied topics in Judaism, Halacha, and Hashkafah.

QuaranTeen Haggadah with inspiring ideas that our students and others around the country have developed while living through their personal quarantines. Despite logistical hindrances of the current pandemic, YULA still held meaningful, inspiring and educational programs for students and parents for Yom Hashoah, Yom Hazikaron, Yom Haatzmaut & Yom Yerushalyim.

regularly observing each other in the classroom, then gathering together to discuss their observations. These discussions are designed as a collaborative exercise to promote enhanced teaching strategies. Teachers have shared that instructional rounds stimulate excitement and energy. When teachers have an opportunity to observe and interact with their colleagues in a non evaluative way regarding instruction, everyone wins.

HELEN AND HYMAN KORNFELD FUND The Helen and Hyman Kornfeld Fund was established to provide ongoing support for student-initiated projects in Jewish history as well as school and community series, and exhibits. Thank you to Paul and Maralyn Soifer for initiating this fund by donating a collection of over 200 Jewish history books which are now housed in the Kestenbaum Commons.

YULA believes that the synthesis of Torah study, general studies, and co-curriculars is necessary to prepare our graduates for success in the 21st century and beyond. At YULA, an educational experience that isn’t excellent isn’t acceptable. The General Studies program at YULA is committed to providing students with a challenging and integrated college preparatory curriculum in the liberal arts, sciences, mathematics, and STEAM. Each academic department strives to create courses that challenge our students to think creatively and critically in order to maximize student intellectual and social growth. INSTRUCTIONAL ROUNDS YULA’s faculty has been participating in the Instructional Rounds Program under the leadership of Math Department Co-Chair, Layla Bayramova for the past six years. The primary purpose of Rounds is for observing teachers to compare their own instructional practices with those of the teachers they observe.
