YULA BOYS HIGH SCHOOL

Leadership Board of Directors

Rabbi Arye Sufrin

Head of School

This past year we truly made history as we welcomed our largest incoming freshman class of recent memory, exceeded fundraising goals, and opened up our new state of the art Nagel Family Campus. Additionally, we celebrated another graduating class who left our Yeshiva inspired and uplifted by their Rebbeim, faculty, and peers. I am proud that over 90% of our graduates will be spending their upcoming year in Eretz Yisrael! At the heart of our Yeshiva is an exceptional group of rebbeim, teachers, and staff that are driven to inspire our students to achieve greatness. And the relationships forged between our faculty and students—relationships that stand at the very core of the YULA experience—do not end at graduation. Part and parcel of the YULA experience is having a Rebbe who will dance at your wedding, teachers who advise on graduate school, and faculty who impart wisdom when choosing a career. Please take a moment to read our annual report which celebrates our successes in 2018-19 and clearly shows the future of YULA is bright!

Year 39 at YULA marked the first of many historic events. A decades long dream of the community, and my family personally, we have seen the completion of the campus expansion. A project that has actively taken ten years to complete, the construction of the expansion is a tremendous source of pride to everyone that has been involved. The expansion has transformed the YULA experience and I have never been more excited about the school’s future. None of this would have been possible without the strong leadership of our Head of School and the generous capital donors who funded this crucial initiative. We finally have a campus that matches the quality of our curriculum! On behalf of the school leadership and Board of Directors, thank you to each of our donors that have supported YULA, big or small. Together, we will continue to enable YULA to further its mission of educating the next generation of Jewish leaders! Mazal Tov! 3

TORAH STUDIES SENIOR SEMINAR As part of a concerted effort to enhance the 12th Grade Torah Studies experience, YULA initiated the Torah Studies Senior Seminar which includes Advanced Tanakh with Rabbi Etshalom, and Project S.A.F.E. with Rabbi Dov Rosenbluth, Director of Guidance, along with new courses this year, Jewish Medical Ethics with Rabbi Jason Weiner and Holocaust Studies with Ms. Yehudis Benhamou.

In Print! Spreading Kol Hatorah Divrei Hitorerut This year, YULA published its first volumes of our Torah journal: Divrei Hitorerut (Words of Inspiration). Thank you to Rita and Shalom Aynesazan for sponsoring the Yomim Noraim edition and to Ilana and Gil Goldschein for sponsoring the Pesach edition.

Pillars of a YULA Education:

Primacy and Relevancy of Torah As a proud Yeshiva high school, our aim is to instill within our students a passion for serious Torah learning, refined middot tovot, and love for Medinat Yisrael. To a YULA student, Torah is never archaic. It always has relevance, a sense of transcendent purpose, and serves as a guide and inspiration for the way we live our lives. Through learning Gemara, Halacha, Chumash, Navi, classical texts of Rishonim and Achronim, Israel education, and Jewish philosophy, our curriculum is built and taught with primacy and relevancy in mind. Friedman Family Masmidim The Friedman Family Masmidim program is a daily bekiut study of Talmud offered to motivated students, with a comprehensive system of chazarah. Each year students complete an entire masechet and participate in the national Yeshiva University Bronka Weintraub High School Bekiut Program. This program consists of a series of written tests throughout the year and students receive awards and prizes based upon performance.

Baum Family Advanced Gemara Track (AGT) The Baum Family AGT (Advanced Gemara Track) provides students with an intensive exposure to Talmud and its commentaries. Beginning in 9th grade, there is a heavy emphasis on reading and students are introduced to the traditional chavruta method of study. Participation in the Baum Family Advanced Gemara Track requires weekly participation at “Night Seder” on Tuesdays and Thursdays after school and regular attendance on Sunday mornings for both shacharit and shiur.

Beit Midrash In addition to the Baum Family AGT program, YULA offers a more intensive and higher level learning style. These students begin each day with a short shiur in Halacha and then are afforded the opportunity to learn daily in an even more “b’iyun” study of Talmud.

Likutei Ohr Each week our students publish a weekly Torah newsletter with Divrei Torah submitted by both faculty and students. It is shared in shuls throughout the community. Kol Hanearim For many years, students at YULA have been contributing to Kol HaNearim, a national publication created by Orthodox Jewish high school students. This publication is a beautiful collection of Divrei Torah from various Yeshiva high schools students across the country and is distributed quarterly. Rosh Chodesh Inspiration Our students experienced a monthly uplifting musical Hallel with Rabbi Eli Skaist, 9th Grade Rebbe, which includes beautiful singing, dancing and inspiration.

New Hires

Rabbi Shua Rose is joining YULA as a 9th grade Rebbe. He was a former radio show host in London and formerly taught in Yeshivat Ohr Sameach and Sharfmans Seminary in Jerusalem.

Rabbi Ari Bensoussan will be teaching night seder and will be working on restructuring the night seder program. He is a world-renowned lecturer and currently heads the Los Angeles branch of Chazak International, a community outreach initiative.

Rabbi Moshe Union is joining YULA as the 11th grade Beit Midrash rebbe. He is currently a member of the Merkaz Hatorah Community Kollel.

YULA Celebrates Torah On May 20th, Rabbi Dror Baalhaness and his wife were honored for their dedication to our students over the past decade. The guests enjoyed a wonderful dessert reception followed by the program, where our “Celebration of Torah” welcomed over 200 YULA students, parents, alumni, and friends to celebrate the incredible Torah learning throughout the year. Our Masmidim completed a siyum on Masechet Megillah which was completed as part of the Yom Iyum. Masmidim Master Mesechet Megillah In the spring, we held a student led Yom Iyun with each Shiur being run by one of the students in the Friedman Family Masmidim Program. During this Yom Iyun, the student body collectively completed the entire Mesechet Megillah! This year-long learning from our students culminated at the Annual Celebration of Torah where we honored Rabbi and Mrs. Baalhaness. 5

Pillars of a YULA Education:

This grant was given to select teens in Los Angeles to support and encourage teens to take risks, be creative, and experiment.

Uncompromising general studies YULA believes that the synthesis of Torah study, general studies, and co-curriculars is necessary to prepare our graduates for success in the 21st century and beyond. The General Studies program at YULA is committed to providing students with a challenging and integrated college preparatory curriculum in the liberal arts, sciences, mathematics, and STEAM. Mr. Jack Nagel z”l On the 3rd of Cheshvan, October 12th, 2018, we lost a hero and community giant. Mr. Jack Nagel z”l was known to many around the world as a philanthropist, community leader, real estate developer and supporter of many causes. To YULA, Jack was a visionary, a founder, and our staunchest advocated. He was family. Jack z”l was a true adom gadol. Having survived the Holocaust, he came to America with a passion to preserve his Jewish heritage. His commitment and devotion transformed the lives of Jews worldwide. He and his wife Gitta went on to support many Jewish institutions and to sustain the rebuilding of Torah in America. Jack z”l and Gitta have been generous supporters of YULA from the very early years. It is because of their devotion, vision and perseverance that the Nagel Family Campus was built. “Patience and perseverance pays off,” Jack once told a room of YULA students. Indeed, it does. As we celebrated the completion of the campus expansion this past fall, we also celebrated Jack’s perseverance in making his dream into a reality. It is because of Jack z”l and Gitta that this dream became the dream of so many others as he led the Los Angeles community to support and invest in this important cause. Jack’s legacy lives on at YULA every day. Every student that has attended and will attend YULA, has benefitted from the generosity and perseverance of Jack Nagel z”l. Yehi Zichro Baruch.

“He was a true role model, who always sanctified G-d’s name through his actions. YULA would not be what it is today without Jack Nagel.” —rabbi arye sufrin, YULA Head of School

“As a Holocaust survivor, Jack was a true hero whose impact was felt by his community and across the globe. Jack taught me that giving Tzedakah is a privilege and moral responsibility.” —dawn arnall, YULA Supporter

“Jack’s dedicated decades of generosity and leadership helped establish and develop the Los Angeles Orthodox Jewish community and its respected educational institutions.” —paul koretz, Los Angeles Council Member

“Los Angeles needs a lot more people to give like Jack Nagel. If everyone in our community followed his inspirational lead and thought like Jack, Los Angeles would have the greatest Jewish institutions in the world.” —meir gelman, YULA Supporter 19
