introduction Having almost completed my A level Photography course, I am interested in exploring another area of it, such as documentary, which includes a variety of images form landscapes to macrophotographs. I decided to concentrate on this genre as there is an aspect of uncertainty and unpredictable imagery, while my other units involved staging and creating particular compositions. Furthermore, by selecting this theme I will be able to combine both imagery and meaning behind my photography, in order to communicate my concept. During this project, I am willing to learn more about my native country, as well as it’s history and why nowadays it experiences decline. By starting to look at three initial ideas, I will choose the best one and explore it further. I am hoping to achieve a higher standard imagery, as by applying taught material, such as the composition rules and digital editing techniques, I will be able to improve my skills. In order to develop this project, I will look at several contextual sources, to learn new techniques and expand my knowledge about styles of Photography, for instance John Darwell, Lewis Baltz and Robert Frank. These photographers explored documentary in ways, which I wanted to experiment with and apply further. In the middle of the project, I am planning to visit exhibition, which will help me to develop a concept and find inspiration for experimentation. Moreover, in order to refine the idea and add a personal touch to photographs, I will experiment both traditionally and digitally and use techniques, such as sellotape and heat transfer, scratching away sections, applying wax and other material, techniques and processes. At the end of the project, I am hoping to achieve a strong set of images, which will show both aesthetics and communicate my ideas. Meanwhile, I will also continue to take portfolio photographs, in order to present them at the end of year exhibition. Ultimately, this book contains my Unit Four project, as well as creative and technical workshops, which have influenced my idea. Throughout the creation of this book, I used a variety of computer programs, such as Adobe InDesign, Photoshop and Lightroom and increased my level of understanding of this software.

ANALYSING

exam paper

9 To start the unit 4, we were given exam paper, which contained 8 topics. During the class we discussed every theme and suggested some ideas for them. By writing down notes, I was able to have a look at suggested artists afterwards, in order to develop initial ideas. I was inspired by several themes: The Journey, Dramatic Images, Mixed Media, Patterns and Issues and observations.

12 idea development: my response to power-point To start with, we were given a power-point presentation that contained photographers whose ideas, concepts or imagery related to the exam paper. This helped me to get starting points for this project, as well as find inspiring artists and techniques for future development.

saul leiter

Above is a documentary shot by Robert Frank. I like the use of composition rules and strong geometric shapes and forms.

On the left, there is an image by Alexander Rodchenko. He was a very modern photographer for his time. I like this photographer because his images have a strong contrast and uncommon composition angles.

Picnic on the Banks of the Marne, 1938

Girl with a Leica, 1934

The image above is by Henri Cartier-Bresson. This photographer is famous for the concept of the ‘Decisive moment’, as he captures situations at the right time, to create a perfectly balanced and eye-catching composition.

13

Photograph above is from Paul Graham’ series - A1.

Image above is by a photographer called Kaylynn Deveney. She documented the routine life of one person in several images. Moreover, to add meaning to these images, she asked the subject to handwrite annotations, explaining actions happening on the image. On the left is a sarcastic image by Elliott Erwitt. I was highly inspired by his humorous approach to documentary. New York City (Dog Legs) 1974

14

ideas

concepts theory

To be successful in photography, a person has to be able to come up with certain ideas in order to communicate with his/her viewers. Although this is a key element of conceptual photography, its idea is not always clear for the viewers to understand the original meaning of the image. Moreover, if you are an ideas person it will not only benefit your work, but will also improve your creative status, if working in a group. Despite this fact, if a particular group has too many ‘thinkers’ this can slow down its creative process.

15

comparison: The process of comparing personal view-points to the real-world examples. Mainly connected to surroundings, which influence a person’s idea and his/her experience.

reflection: The application of experience and meaning to the photograph, using already existing knowledge.

abstraction: The invention of the idea/concept and creation of a specific design for the end product/project.

MY

INITIAL

IDEAS

18 developing idea

Boards To develop my idea, I decided to create pinterest boards, in order to get inspiration from already existing images. In addition, I looked at techniques and physical ways of experimenting with the project.

INITIAL idea 1 My first idea involved images of abandoned buildings, which will be dark and moody. Throughout this last unit I hope to do several physical experimentations, by painting, scratching and tearing photographs.

1

19

20 1ST INITIAL IDEA: My first idea was to document a decaying process of buildings. I was highly inspired and shocked by these structures in the countryside in Kharkiv, Ukraine. As it is my almost my neighbourhood, I had an interest in exploring reasons why they became abandoned and how they look nowadays.

ABANDONED BUILDINGS

MIND-MAP

21 OUTSIDE To start with, I spent a day during the half term, exploring nearest abandoned houses. Firstly I wanted to capture buildings outside, almost creating a portrait. By shooting from the slight below angle, building appeared more powerful and significant.

INSIDE

Afterwards, I went inside this house, in order to create a different point of view. I focused on creating rather dramatic angles. Technical parameters: ISO - 100, Aperture - F/3.5, Shutter speed - 1/80 sec.

There are many, many abandoned houses in this area of Ukraine. They are an intriguing source of images and feature farm buildings, workshops and family homes.

25 INITIAL idea 2 The second idea goes under the title ‘Journey’. I was inspired by documentary photographers and decided to explore this area. This idea contains graphic geometric with strong contrast, depicting a variety of social groups of people.

26 2nd INITIAL IDEA: The second idea is about everyday life, people’s jobs, hobbies and interests. By capturing individuals in different situations I will be able to create a diverse opinion on the 21st century values and ideals.

INITIAL idea 3 The third idea was inspired by the topic ‘Patterns’. The idea was not only to capture natural and artificial patterns and textures, but also human’ patterns of behaviour and usual habits. This can be represented by showing several room sections, such as a bed or a table. Images will be very graphic and will also have a strong composition.

32 3Rd INITIAL IDEA: My next idea is mainly connected to composition rules and geometry in architecture. I feel, people do not focus on small details and beautiful shapes in everyday life, such as lines created on the street. I wanted to concentrate my idea on reminding and showing them these aspects of the street design.

selecting ideas: pros and cons To decide on the main idea for my unit 4, I will list the number of advantages and disadvantages of each concept and select the best one.

1st INITIAL IDEA: abandoned houses pros • This idea is unique, as I could not find similar images on either pinterest, or google. • I could do a lot of physical and digital experimentations. • There are many ways to develop the project. • Unusual aspect of photography, which I have not explored before. • I will have easy access to these buildings. • There are a huge number of buildings to photograph • Link with my unit 2 from last year • Great metaphorical and symbolic ideas

cons • Might be hard to make several shoot cycles, as I want to shoot in Ukraine. • Images might appear too dark, as inside the houses there is no lighting.

2

3

37 2nd INITIAL IDEA: documentary pros • I have not experimented with documentaries before, therefore I will be interested in exploring this type of photographs. • Can find a lot of inspiration on the streets. • Shoot cycles can be on the weekend, while I am in London.

cons • Not a lot of experimentation can be done, in terms both of digital and physical ways. • Images might appear similar. This may be due to the same placement of individuals and composition. • Can be hard to achieve interesting photographs, as this idea will rely on ‘lucky’ shots.

3rd INITIAL IDEA: geometry pros •Images will be aesthetically pleasing. • I have easy access to all the houses, as geometric forms can be found anywhere. • Creating a colourful range of images, will attract the audience.

cons • Not a lot of physical experimentation can be done. • Very common project with not many challenges, which does not communicates any issues.

chosen idea

After writing several pros and cons of each idea, I decided to choose the concept number 1 I will be able to experiment with a different genre of photography, which I have not explored before - documentary. Moreover, it is a very personal idea, as I grew up, seeing these structures decaying overtime. I am sure that this idea has great potential in terms of experimentation and development. Furthermore, by looking at different aspects of documentary photography, for instance Black and White imagery and how it affects the original photo, I will be able to create a few dramatic outcomes. These crumbling buildings will create the opportunity to make pictures that one powerfully symbolic of a time and a place and will help me explore my home photographically.

40

planning: future shoot cycles Before starting a first shoot cycle, I decided to make a brief plan. This will help to divide the work load. For each shoot I will consider a different theme/action to explore. Moreover, each shoot cycle is subject to change and the project will develop each time.

shoot cycle 1 I will start by taking a considerable amount of images. • Create a brief action plan and a mood board to get an inspiration. • Shoot lots of ‘loose’ pictures around my idea. Explore all the directions. Play around with equipment, colours, textures, happy accidents and make a contact sheet. Look for the good and bad. Show both. • Experiment / explore digitally and physically use techniques from mini books if applicable. • Explore contextual sources and apply them to my work. Look for styles and subject matter from your choices • Evaluate what I have done and decide on the route of the idea.

shoot cycle 2 Need to be more focussed and concentrate on one particular aspect idea. • Shoot lots of pictures around my action plan 2 and evaluation from shoot cycle 1. Make a contact sheet and study successful images and failures. • Experiment physically/digitally and document the process. • Apply contextual sources properly and find a style that helps communicate what I am thinking about. Look for ways of shooting subject matter. Create Links. • Evaluate what I have done so far and be more critical and specific at this point. • Create an action plan for cycle 3.

41 shoot cycle 3 Need to explore on another point from the original hypothesis and focus on exploring this further. • Shoot specific pictures around my action plan 3 and evaluation from cycle 2. • • Experiment more, in order to create a diversity of images. • Contextual sources apply them properly. How does this artist improve my idea. What can I add to the mix. Create links. • Evaluate what I have done so far and be critical at this point. • Action plan for cycle 4

Shoot cycle 4+5 ETC. Filling visual gaps in and creating a series of these buildings. • Shoot specific pictures around my action plan 4 and evaluation from cycle 3. Be more specific. Make a contact sheet. • Experiment / explore digitally - use techniques that I have learnt throughout unit 1,2,3. • Contextual sources- apply them properly find a style that helps communicate what I am thinking about. Look for developed ways of shooting my subject matter. • Evaluate what I have done so far - have I achieved what I wanted. • Move on to post edit.

42

INITIAL

HYPOTHESIS

43

There are many abandoned places in the world, which demonstrate destruction and the power of time. My images will emphasize these features, communicate issues of contemporary society and show that abandoned structures can be very fragile but at the same time aesthetically pleasing. This project will also document the changes I experienced growing up and visiting countryside.

SHOOT CYCLE WHAT I AM GOING TO DO

1

I am going to shoot a variety of photographs, to explore and experiment with the idea. Such images are linked with my initial concept of showing these areas and constructions in Ukraine which used to be popular during the USSR era, whereas nowadays they have fallen into disrepair. I am planning to explore 4 broad areas: macro-photography, landscapes, geometry in nature/buildings and the insides of such constructions.

HOW I AM GOING TO DO IT The shoot will be located in Ukraine during the holidays. By travelling around in the countryside, approximately one hour away from my city, I will look for objects and constructions which were used before.

PLANNING THAT I HAVE ALREADY DONE I have already found a place with abandoned buildings and car repair station where I can take images.

TECHNIQUES I AM GOING TO EXPLORE During the shoot cycle 1 I am going to experiment with framing subject matter and apply knowledge from technical workshops from unit 3 in order to create outstanding compositions. Furthermore, I will experiment with black and white, as such images will symbolise time and historical aspect of the area.

PROBLEMS THAT I MAY ENCOUNTER As this shoot will be shot not in the studio the biggest issue arising is the weather conditions.

46 planning the shoot: one day before

Before going to shoot photographs, I conducted a small research on the area I was going to shoot in. By planning car journey beforehand, I was able to plan the timing, so that I will have enough day light to take images. By locating the shoot near familiar area to me, I was able to experiment more with particular features and capture more details. Martove, the village I was observing.

Furthermore, I looked at the weather on Ukrainian website, in order to check if it is possible to shoot during the weekend in that area. On this shoot cycle I was accompanied by my farther and explore several areas containing ruined building. As the weather was cold, it was hard to shoot outside for a long time period. During this shoot cycle my mood has changed dramatically, as these structures reminded me of their past glory days and that people used to live there and use objects, that nobody uses nowadays.

47 exploring 1st area: close-ups In the start of the shoot cycle I decided to experiment with macro-photography. By focusing on rather small details, I wanted to bring viewers’ attention to these items, as they symbolise an impact of the time. By looking at photos with the concept - ‘Less is more’, I placed found objects in the centre of composition, in order to avoid all the litter around them.

In order to emphasise the effect from these items and lead viewer’s eye to the object, I added a Smart Blur, by using Photoshop CS5. Technical parameters: ISO - 100, Aperture - F/6.3, Shutter speed - 1/200 sec.

48 experimentation: black and white I added a black and white layer, in order to enhance the effect from these objects, as well as to bring viewers’ attention to them, by eliminating all the colours.

Placing the object off centre, as well as cropping it, helped eye to directly view writings on the cassette, which said ‘Cartoons, 2004’. By having this time indicator, I increased the impact of the issue - a destruction of time. Technical parameters: ISO - 100, Aperture - F5.3, Shutter speed - 1/200 sec.

As the initial image had a strong contrast between dark and light areas, adding Curves helped to even the light.

49 before

after digital editing: decreasing contrast Due to the harsh light, almost every picture had the same issue - strong difference between highlights and shadows. Therefore, I applied several layers, such as Curves, Levels and Brightness/Contrast.

These houses initially were very colourful, but over the time paint has became dull and almost invisible. Therefore, I increased the saturation to highlight these features.

50

51

52 exploring 2nd area: landscapes

After experimenting with macro-photography, the next step was to do explore the completely opposite area - landscapes. I used several composition rules, such as Rule of Thirds, Get in Close, Angles and Leading lines.

By placing contemporary bright objects in frame, I wanted to show differences between generations.

53

I turned this photo black and white, in order to add an historical aspect and age the construction. By highlighting the sky, structure on the right became the centre of the composition.

The image on the left symbolises decay and distraction. By placing dead flowers in front of the house, I enhanced the deterioration of such structures. Technical parameters: ISO - 100, Aperture - F3.5 , Shutter speed - 1/2500 sec.

54 experimentation: compositions

55 digital editing before

after On the image above, the wheel is the focal point, whereas by changing angle on the photo below, the bicycle became a centre of the composition. I added a black and white layer, to concentrate attention on the object itself and the meaning behind the photo, rather than colour palette.

56

57

58

59 idea development: abandoned buildings

I believe, that these images are the most successful, as they represent and communicate my initial intentions demonstrate two sides of desolation. Technical parameters: ISO - 100, aperture - F9, shutter speed - 1/200 sec.

60

61

62 exploring 3rd area: geometric compositions

I decided to keep the concept from my initial ideas and include geometry in my project. By applying photography rules, such as Golden Ratio, Rule of Thirds and dividing space by using lines and angles, humans’ eyes are more likely to be attracted by the photo. Therefore images will attract more viewers.

63 before

after By looking at this staircase from different angles, I found various compositions, which successfully worked. However, I decided to add black and white layer, in order to increase contrast and emphasize shapes.

As this original image had extremely dark and light areas, I used heavy post production on separate pieces, in order to balance out the exposure.

64

65

66 contextual reference:

william eggleston

William Eggleston saw a complexity and beauty of the mundane world: ‘The extraordinary, honest, beautiful and unsparing photographs all have to do with the quality of our lives in the ongoing world...’ - Mark Holborn. He was inspired by documentaries of Robert Frank and Henri Cartier-Bresson, who captured the world as it is.

67

His styles mostly consisted of snapshots, influenced by abstract expressionism, however they were carefully planned. I have chosen this photographer as he documented everyday boring and repetitive life by using unusual compositions and angles with abundance of colours. The normality of these subjects is deceptive, but behind the images there is a hidden sense of danger. There is a certain aesthetic in these images, however every person will a have different impression, whereas it is just a snapshot or a clever composition.

68 cross contextualisation: adapting views

Technical parameters: ISO - 100, aperture - F6.3, shutter speed -1/400 sec.

Technical parameters: ISO - 100, aperture - F5.6, shutter speed -1/800 sec.

69

In order to recreate William Eggleston’s photographs, I recognised compositions and was looking for similar ideas on the shoot day. By placing buildings off the frame, without creating straight angles I was able to recreate his snap-shot effect.

70 contextual reference:

Christopher Payne

This photographer communicates the idea, that these abandoned hospitals once were monuments of civic pride, built with noble intentions by leading architects and physicians. However some people considered them as places from nightmares where people were abused. These buildings were some of the largest structures and remained popular for many decades. Nevertheless due to the dramatic changes in law, almost all of them became abandoned. His architectural approach helped him to get shocking compositions.

71

I have chosen this photographer, as in Ukraine similar factories and villages were also once popular. However after the USSR disintegrated people left these places and went to bigger cities. Therefore nowadays there are many abandoned houses in the countryside.

72 cross contextualisation: doors and windows

The problem with exposure occurred, when I was taking photos in front of windows. As there was a big difference in amount of light, I had to decrease the exposure inside of the windows and increase it inside the house.

Doors Looking at items through the doorways makes the eye follow around the photo, eventually concentrating on the composition in it. Doors symbolise new beginnings, however I used them as controversy to show that this is also the end.

73

To recreate Payne’s images, I decided to concentrate attention on doors and windows, as his series contained several similar photographs. At the time, it was too dangerous to go inside this building, therefore I had to shoot standing in the doorway. I used lines to drag attention to the windows. Moreover, I experienced the same issue - exposure was completely different inside and outside the house. As I shoot in JPEG and could not use Lightroom, I had to balance out each bit separately, by adding Levels.

SHOOT CYCLE WHAT I AM GOING TO DO

2

I am going to shoot a series of photographs, based around abandoned buildings and structures, in the area where I used to spent my childhood. While I was small, people used to live in some of these houses, whereas nowadays they are completely abandoned. I wanted to explore how time has changed these places.

HOW I AM GOING TO DO IT As I have mentioned before, this shoot will be located in Ukraine, as I want to revisit the same place again, however with different intentions. I will look more at houses and interiors and objects inside them.

PLANNING THAT I HAVE ALREADY DONE I have researched the area more in-depth and predicted weather, as well as planned the the journey through the village.

TECHNIQUES I AM GOING TO EXPLORE I am going to explore and experiment with different compositions and weather conditions, as by doing documentary series I have an opportunity to create unexpected results. Furthermore, I will do physical experimentations with techniques, learnt throughout 2-year course.

PROBLEMS THAT I MAY ENCOUNTER The biggest problem with this shoot cycle could possible be the access to such structures and the weather.

82 day one: exploring familiar village

To gain an inspiration, I decided to continue shooting in the village, where I used to spend time, as my concept was more clearer and intentions were different. I focused on old houses, where people still live, to compare them afterwards to completely abandoned structures. I believe, that these images worked, due to the geometric forms and a contrast between roof colours and a plain sky.

83

84 idea experimentation: more urban houses

85

ISO - 125, Aperture - F/4.5, Shutter speed - 1/200. The top image was inspired by Bill Henson. I feel that this experiment worked, as with the lack of details, viewers are forced to create their own architecture. Moreover, by taking images of half-urban houses, I wanted to show the conditions people are still living in and compare them to left villages.

88 2nd half of the day: change in weather I went to shoot images in the afternoon, however as the weather changed, images appeared less atmospheric. Despite this fact, I was able to capture bold shadows and bright colours.

ISO - 100, Aperture - F/8, Shutter speed - 1/400.

89

I still experimented with geometry, leading lines and landscapes, which included abandoned features such as armature. During this shoot cycle there was a massive change in weather (snow), so that I shot similar images again, to see how weather conditions affect the way the audience interpret my imagery.

90 experimentation: re-shooting images

As it was snowy, I could see car traces, therefore it is evident that nowadays people are still using these structures, because they do not have their own supplies. Image below worked in terms of composition, as it contains leading lines, which concentrate viewers’ attention on two windows, showing the outside world.

91

92

ISO - 125, Aperture - F/13, Shutter speed - 1/60.

93

To push the idea further, I went to visit another village, which consisted of almost 20 abandoned houses. Nevertheless, I felt very ill in the end of the day, so had to stop shooting. As it was almost the end of the day, wooden pieces combined with bold shadows which filled the frame, making composition more intriguing.

94

SHOOT

day

2

95 idea development: planning

Garashkovka, Kharkivskiy region Ukraine

In the end of the previous day, I went to one village, but due to my health state I could not continue taking images. In spite the fact, that I already had enough images, I wanted to explore these houses more and find out more about people, who lived there. Before going there again, I found this place on google maps, to see where I can go. I decided firstly to explore 1 part of it.

96 idea development: buildings from outside

On the next day the weather was cloudy again, which helped me to achieve an even lighting, it was dark, so I had to set ISO higher. Throughout the shoot day 2, I was accompanied by my dad, who considered these buildings dangerous to a certain extent, therefore he did not let me in to take photographs in some of them.

Although, I increased ISO, images were underexposed. Therefore, I added several layers, using non-destructive editing, such as Levels and Brightness/Contrast. Moreover, by framing doors and windows, I achieved leading lines.

97

I had a chance to look inside of these buildings, capturing hidden before details. There were not only structures for living, but also for storages, keeping animals and playgrounds.

98

I then moved on observing second house. The same issue was this time - this building was not strong enough to go safely inside, therefore I decided to experiment with angles and shoot from outside. By experimenting with composition rules, such as ‘Rule of Thirds’, ‘Leading Lines’ and ‘Off Centre’ the same architectural structure appeared significantly different on each image.

99

Each building was rebuilt many times (can be seen by looking at many layers in wall cracks). This symbolises that people used to take care about their home, even with the lack of financial support.

100

101

102 idea development: storytelling

Eventually, I was able to visit one of these buildings. There were many items, thrown on the floor, including clothing and furniture, but as it was too dark, I could not capture whole interior.

103

I wanted to know more, about the life story of the owner of this house and why nowadays it became abandoned. By looking at almost ruined photographs and old post-cards, I found out that previous owner died around 60-70 years ago. To document this, I brought some photographs outside and composed them, in the way, that viewers would be able to see the evidence.

Snow only enhanced the effect of loneliness. By turning this image black and white, I added historical aspect to these post cards.

104 contextual reference:

robert polidori

Robert Polidori is a photographer, capturing human habitats and environments. His images communicate both past history and contemporary society examples in one photo frame. Although his photographs look like just architectural photography, Polidori captured aftermath of natural disasters, such as flooding and hurricanes.

105

Polidori’s images were always very sharp. ‘When images are soft, they just remain evocative, or in your imagination. You get a mood, and it remains on the emotional level. The viewer has to put more of him or herself into it. When there is more detail, it’s like that old expression: There’s no fiction stranger than reality. Reality will compose the most extreme paradoxes and contradictions and adjacencies, which can’t be understood.’ - Robert Ayers.

106

My image Garashkovka, Kharkivskiy region Ukraine

107 cross contextualisation: idea refinement

My image I was highly influenced by this photographer, especially his style of composing photos. As he mainly uses a wide angle lens it allowed him to fit in numerous objects, which provides me with information about the place and makes me feel a contemplation. This approach in particular inspired me to go inside one of the houses and find similar compositions. I purposely shot unfocused images, to experiment with expression they will give.

Experiment to create artificial effect of painting (reference to culture and art).

110 contextual reference:

William Christenberry

William Christenberry is a photographer and sculptor, mostly creating personal work, based on his childhood experiences of living in a poor farming family during the Great Depression. He primarily documented a decay of individual structures, which are photographed as isolated and abandoned places. Christenberry then began turning captured houses into sculptures, inspired by found objects, reproducing their decay and inevitability of time.

111

His approach to these houses was similar to mine, as his images are at the same time disturbing and mystical.

112 cross contextualisation:

In his images the backdrop is empty, this makes me feel isolated, haunted and lost, so in order to recreate similar atmosphere, I searched for isolated colourful and dull houses and structures, as Christenberry had a combination of both. These were houses of owners who did not have finances to keep them running, so that nowadays they are empty.

113

I also included other abandoned constructions, such as garages. By adding a black and white layer, I did not only enhance forms and increase contrast, but have also added historical meaning to the image on the top.

114 traditional experimentation: backgrounds

To start physical experiments, I firstly selected types of backgrounds. I have chosen a natural earthy palette of colours, which will help to emphasize effects from buildings. As I am planning to do image transfer, I selected several textured materials to create 3-dimencional effect.

experiments that did not worked

These heat transfer examples did not work, possibly due to low temperature of iron.

In order to bring some of the details back, I inverted the original image. This helped to create stronger contrast between light and dark areas, exaggerating windows and roof.

115 adding background: brown paper

The next experiment was layering images on different backgrounds. I have chosen a brown colour, as it symbolises ancient paper. Layering this particular image on top of it, increased the effect of lost memories. However paper is not covering whole picture, as I wanted to highlight the difference between just an old photograph and history.

As I was using glue stick to attach brown paper to the white one, I decided to print on it straight away. Therefore, it resisted colours and created an effect of washed out old imagery.

116 traditional experimentation: scratching

As I was printing images on the photographic paper, I decided to experiment with scratching over people’s faces. This represents that these people are gone and they are just a part of somebody’s history. I believe that this experiment worked and I want to refine this idea further.

The next experiment was to do a heat transfer on different types of textured paper. Despite the fact, that I increased the temperature of the iron, the image still did not transfer onto the paper but left an effect of mist and magic on the photograph itself. After the experiment I scanned images and altered them digitally, in order to achieve stronger contrast.

117

I did this experiment, to change the meaning and mood of these images - from dark abandoned buildings to magical and mysterious places from fairytales.

120 traditional experimentation: adding paint

In order to experiment with cellotape transfer I decided to add more painterly techniques. Therefore, I selected images containing snow, so that it will match a colour I have chosen. First attempt did not work, however after scanning in the image its multiple reflections reminded me of a Holga camera. After several attempts, I achieved an effect of a drowned image.

121 cellotape transfer: adding paint

By applying foil to the background, I increased the effect from snow and aged photographs.

On some of the images, I folded foil to achieve more reflections. Furthermore, by increasing highlights and contrast I achieved a snow-like faded effect. This was done to convert the oppressive effect from these structures to more magical, in order to allow the audience to see both sides of abandonment.

SHOOT CYCLE WHAT I AM GOING TO DO

3

Throughout my previous shoot cycles I realised, that many of my images consisted a geometric designs, shapes and forms. I believe, this was due to the impact of several photographers, as well as improved photography vision, influenced by composition rules, during last 2 years. As geometric forms are usually found in urban areas, I wanted to explore and try to find them in abandoned structures. Therefore, this shoot cycle will be purely an experiment, which might influence my idea further.

HOW I AM GOING TO DO IT The shoot will be located back in Ukraine, in one of my abandoned villages. As I have mentioned before, I will explore it for a different purpose, in order to find graphic shapes and forms, created by these old structures.

PLANNING THAT I HAVE ALREADY DONE I have already researched the rural area I am planning to shoot in.

TECHNIQUES I AM GOING TO EXPLORE During this shoot cycle, I am planning to attempt some digital experimentation, in order to create modern approach to ancient buildings. Moreover, I will also develop traditional experimentation techniques, in order to use them further in my project.

PROBLEMS THAT I MAY ENCOUNTER Although, this route of photography differs from my last evaluation and planned shoot cycles, I still want to experiment with images, in order or create a wide range to choose from.

128 planning the shoot: Guslovka Kharkivskiy region Ukraine

To start with, I created a map with a road-plan, so that I will have enough time to get the right amount of light. Furthermore, in order to explore the whole area, where I have shot previously, I decided to locate the shoot cycle further down the main road. This way, I was able to find new structures and fresh viewpoint.

First attempts: At the start of the shoot I captured macro images focusing on particular details and features, rather than shapes and forms. Even though some photos were successful, I reconsidered my intentions, as images had to be more strict, in order to symbolise and represent abandonment.

129

ISO - 160, Aperture - f/8 Shutter speed - 1/50 sec.

130

131 symbolism: doors and windows

Almost every door and window was ‘closed’, which represented no progress, new life or any expectations. On the photo below, open window is blocked by dead grass, which enhances the effect.

132 contextual reference:

lewis baltz

Lewis Baltz’s images represent human control, power and its influence on the world. Moreover, this series show the relationship between architectural structures in everyday life and painting ‘fields’. In additions, Baltz aimed to capture the anonymity, inhabitation and settlement in a unique way.

133

Lewis Baltz’s minimalistic photograph series focused on searching for beauty in isolation and structures. His photography highly influenced my style, as his images are designed, considered and composed ‘graphically’, resulting in beautiful pictures. For me, the most striking feature of these images is their abstract design and Baltz’s view-point, as he composed his photographs by thinking in lines, shapes and texture blocks.

134 cross contextualisation:

Initially, I had the same intentions, as Lewis Baltz had - to show the ‘beauty in destruction’. In order to recreate his images, I selected more urbanized houses with graphic shapes, rather than completely ruined structures. By thinking about this building in shapes and forms, I was able to create similar compositions to Baltz. ISO - 100 Aperture - f/10 Shutter speed - 1/160 sec.

135

By turning images black and white, I not only recreated Lewis Baltz style more precisely, but had also made the audience focus on the building itself, rather than on the colour palette. This action emphasized tones and enhanced contrast, so that images became more geometric. By learning more about this photographer, I have attempted to create photos, which appeared to the viewers as just colour blocks and shapes. However, not all photos worked as I added complexity to the compositions, which ruined the initial simplicity of the image.

136 idea refinement: simple compositions

Being highly influenced by Lewis Baltz’s geometrical simplicity, I have continued creating compositions, to show beauty of these structures. Technical parameters: ISO - 100, Aperture - f/11, Shutter speed - 1/250 sec.

Overexposed, to enhance the contrast and brighten colour palette.

137

Lewis uses simple lines. I have introduced more complexity which does not always work.

138 digital experimentation: creating paintings In the previous shoot cycle I experimented with Photoshop Levels, in order to create an artificial effect. It reminded me of art pieces, therefore I decided to explore this technique further. By adding three extra points on the Levels’ graph and reversing shadows with highlights, I was able to create a variety of effects.

I decided to use this image, as this house initially had dull tones, as well as complicated structure. This allowed me to created complex colour layers on he roof. By starting with a slight change of colours, I gradually increased the inversion of colours, in order to achieve more radical results.

139

In order to enhance the urban effect, I used a creative crop to concentrated viewers’ attention on lines and shapes. This created an effect of graffiti.

140 Traditional experimentation: cutting

Being highly inspired by the geometry of these buildings, I decided to pursue this idea further and experiment by cutting out plain straight forms and rearranging them. In order to create an organic and natural pattern, which will catch audiences attention I connected similar ornaments, so that the image ‘flows’. Moreover, by ‘breaking’ a roof into shapes I wanted to represent how versatile such structures are. Overall, even though experiments on this double page worked visually, I believe that these photographs do not represent the atmosphere and the place, because of the excess amount of details. Therefore the initial concept is lost.

141 Traditional experimentation: folding

In order to enhance the meaning of images including closed doors I created several folding examples. However leaving the middle part of these doors opened . Such action did act as a controversy, as shut doors symbolise emptiness and abandonment, whereas open middle - new beginnings.

experimentation: changing background

142 Traditional experimentation: samples

By preparing types of paper for traditional experimentations beforehand I was able to plan and select them, so that less time is needed on the shoot day. Furthermore, this also allowed me to create certain colour and material combinations, therefore experiments were more successful.

Traditional experimentation: collage Having grown up in a post soviet community I felt a strong connection between past and present, so in this experiment dark red thread represents old roots, traditions; whilst green shows new community rising above and ignoring the old one.

143

144 experimentation: creating new a house In order to fully represent the mood and atmosphere of this place, I decided to combine several houses together. Not only was this experiment successful visually and graphically, but has it also symbolised the right information, showing both abandoned villages and modern technology.

145 experimentation: adding historical aspect

Top: Symbolises the same combination of both old and new cultures. The second image is an old USSR postcard. Bottom: Actions in opened window represent previous owners of this abandoned building and their lifestyle.

148 experimentation: using wax and b&W worked

To enhance an effect of old images I decided to combine both wax with black and white. Whereas wax worked on this colourful example, in black and white this photo lost its contrast, so that wax itself could not be detected.

did not work

149 experimentation: using wax and b&W did not work

Here black and white photo worked better, due to the contrast between dark roof and light wax, creating an effect of snow.

SHOOT CYCLE WHAT I AM GOING TO DO

4

I am going to return to my initial idea - portraying abandoned structures as signs of lost civilisation and their historical importance, as well as beauty of these isolated houses. Furthermore, I am willing to ask citizens of closest village, in order to learn about the history of the area and its previous residents.

HOW I AM GOING TO DO IT This shoot cycle is going to be shot over the weekend, during the Easter holidays. I will be accompanied by my dad, who knows certain information about the area, where I am planning to shoot. Moreover, I will visit the same village, where I shot shoot cycle 2 in order to improve my skills, gain in-depth knowledge about this area and explore it from the other point of view.

PLANNING THAT I HAVE ALREADY DONE I have prepared a detailed route with places, needed to be visited.

TECHNIQUES I AM GOING TO EXPLORE During this shoot cycle, I will experiment traditionally and digitally with new techniques, as well as develop old strategies, such as scratchings etc.

PROBLEMS THAT I MAY ENCOUNTER As this shoot cycle will be located in an abandoned township, there might not be any citizens nearby, therefore I will not be able to get any additional information. Moreover, as this shoot cycle will be located outdoors, where weather is unpredictable, this can result in lighting issues.

154

SHOOT

day

1

155 idea development: planning

On the first day of this shoot cycle, I was not able to travel far away from the family house in the countryside. That is why, I went around the village, where we live, as well as its outskirts, to find new abandoned structures. I have chosen to shoot there, as it contains both types of houses, therefore I will be able to create a diverse range of images. Martova, Kharkivskiy region Ukraine

156 experimentation: geometry

Being highly inspired by the previous shoot cycle’s images and geometry, I decided to work in the similar style, however adding more content and meaning to photos, by focusing on features, that symbolise abandonment.

157 I have tried to include features, that symbolise isolation, such as objects, cracks, stains and dead plants. In order to show the dimensions of each object, I used composition rule ‘Size indicators’.

As shot was on the cloudy day, images appeared underexposed, with blue undertones, so there was a heavy post production.

Walking through this village, several gates attracted my attention, as I believe that they represent a person, lived or currently living there. Such rusty signs show how nature dominates over the human activity with time. Technical characteristics: ISO - 160 , Aperture - f/6.3, Shutter speed - 1/60 sec.

158

159

160 experimentation: rule of thirds

Previously a place for dancing. I decided to experiment with one more composition rule - ‘Rule of Thirds’, in order to see how this action can change the meaning of the photo. By placing an object in the corner, rather than in the centre, I concentrated the viewers’ attention on the whole image, as well as on the background.

161 By adding black and white filter and erasing shape of car, I highlighted the fact, that this house is still residential.

162

163

164 idea development: abandoned railway carriage

As I was walking through this village, this ‘coach’ attracted my attention. Later on, residents of this township told me, that during summer several homeless people used to live here.

165 It can be counted as semi-abandoned structure. Furthermore, by going inside the carriage I found various posters, which symbolises the human presence.

Due to the use of JPEG format, I could not edit overexposed areas, such as windows.

166 idea development: the magic of blue doors

My next stop was a building with several blue doors. As I found out later, this structure used to be a post-office, however stopped working in 2005. This assumptions were made from observing the house more in-depth.

167

168 previous influences: rooms Throughout the previous shoot cycles I was looking at photographers such as Christopher Payne and Robert Polidori, both framing their compositions through doorways, as well as including many windows.

169

This time I was able to bring back mid-tones in windows, by using ‘Burn’ tool on each one separately, so that interior mid-tones remained unchanged. Technical parameters: ISO - 320, Aperture - f/7.1, Shutter speed - 1/50 sec. In order to change the atmosphere of the image I experimented digitally, using Photoshop to lightly invert the colours and create warmer tones. This turned daunting house into ‘playground’.

170

171

172 uninhabited post office: details To learn more about this particular house, I researched details and observed every note/document founded there. Moreover, to concentrate attention on the information itself, I turned these images black and white.

173

174

SHOOT

day

2

175 idea development: planning

Hnylytsia, Kharkivskiy region Ukraine

On the second day, I went to the township, where I initially planned to go, as well as revisited the place, which I explored in shoot cycle 2, to see any changes nature created. The new village, called Hnylytsia Persha, was a section of a whole series of villages, however as it was the most ancient part, many abandoned structures were founded there. As the road trip was going to take approximately 40 min, myself and my father, who was accompanying me throughout the whole unit, decided to travel by car.

176 new discoveries: old church / storehouse

ISO - 100, Aperture - f/13, Shutter speed - 1/60 sec. I have chosen to go to Hnylytsia, as from several residents nearby, I heard about the old church.

177

This church was abandoned for over 60 years, as during world war two it was destroyed. Unfortunately, we could not enter it, as the church was locked, nevertheless after exploring it further and looking inside trough many cracks, it was clear that nowadays citizens of the village nearby use this house as a storage for corn.

178

179 idea development: details

By observing details further, I found out that citizens not only rebuild this church from time to time, but also set grass to fire, so that they will have an easy access to the building. In order to recreate an atmosphere of isolation and abandonment, which I felt there, I concentrated attention on individual features,

180 contextual link:

john darwell

John Darwell creates projects, which represent his passion in industrial and social change, as well as concern for the environment and arguments around the description of mental health state. I have chosen this photographer, as John Darwell visualised and communicated his emotions, especially depression, and mental state trough contemporary photography. ‘As a photographer, Darwell roots himself in neglected landscapes’, - Stephen Clarke.

181

I have chosen his project ‘Chernobyl’, as the catastrophe happened in Ukraine forced people to leave their houses. The idea behind this series which interested me, was to capture people’s belongings to document life 50 years ago, which slowly fades away nowadays. His images make me feel both nostalgic and isolated.

182 cross contextualisation:

As John Darwell’s project ‘Legacy’ mostly contained people’s possessions, by introducing similar objects, found in abandoned houses I was able to successfully recreate his style. I wanted to communicate an atmosphere of abandonment and isolation, so by using various angles to leave an empty backdrop, I concentrated attention on particular objects.

183

184 idea refinement: buildings inside and outside

At this point I returned to the village, which was explored in shoot cycle 2. Being influenced by this photographer, I decided to go inside certain buildings, in order to find out about their owners and time period they lived in. ‘On 45th birthday. For Anna Petrovna, from teachers’ committee of Grashkovka 8th grade school. 25 of December, 1966’

185

Moreover to communicate the emotions and feelings which can be experienced on location, I documented many newspapers and personal belongings founded there,as they are best representatives of the person’s personality. I experimented with placement of such features, as well as composing still lives.

186 2ND HOUSE: SCHOOL TEACHER’S HOME

Outside: ISO - 100, Aperture - f/8, Shutter speed - 1/80 sec . Inside: ISO - 800, Aperture - f/4, Shutter speed - 1/50 sec.

187

The next building was owned by a school teacher as well. Although most of belongings were piled on the floor, by experimenting with shooting from above helped to create a strong composition that presents vital information for the viewers.

From the shoot cycle 2, this bed was moved to next to the windows.

192 3RD structure: home of unknown

193

Going inside this house did not help determining its owner, as there was nothing inside. Furthermore, I faced the same issue, going in several building. The reason behind it, is that poor citizens of nearest villages have stolen the furniture, personal items, as well as metal contraptions from inside the oven.

194 improving craft: shooting again

ISO - 640, Aperture - f/8, Shutter speed - 1/60 sec.

195

During this shoot cycle, I wanted to improve my skills and create a different atmosphere, by re-taking similar images, in order to see the progress. As a result, photographs appeared sharper, with more suitable exposure and balanced composition, which leads the eye to the focal point - either window or the object.

196 Experimentation: playing with colours Experimenting with Levels, in order to achieve the effect of painting/create an art piece.

197 idea development: signs of civilisation Objects founded inside and outside of the houses, makes viewers fell nostalgic.

198 Contextual reference:

robert frank

I have chosen Robert Frank, as his point of view and ideas behind this series influenced my work throughout this unit. This photographer documented the differences between the optimism during 1950s and harsh reality of later decades. His ironic approach to wealthy American culture and uncommon technique (including blur, low lighting and cropping) made his photos stand out from other photojournalists at that time.

199

His style was mainly influenced by the events that happened during his life, which links to my initial influences - childhood memories. By scratching and scribbling over photographs, Frank communicated his feelings.

Images on the previous page represent Robert Frank’s pain of losing his closest family members. By painting words on top of these photos the photographer demonstrates his reaction to such life changes. I was mainly inspired by the idea of using images as a symbol of rejection of achievements, as they do not matter with time.

200 cross contextualisation:

To recreate Robert Frank’s style I decided to use images that contained either places or objects which were the most valuable for their owners. By using such photos, I will be able to closely represent how people were influenced by their surroundings. Furthermore, in order to communicate my intentions with the audience, I hand-scratched words such as ‘stop’, ‘no time’, ‘no future’, ‘awake’, ‘no fear’ and ‘no need to rush’. As well as words in Ukrainian, such as ‘no’ and ‘children’, to symbolise the location where these photographs were taken. By writing times, such as 3PM or 6AM I wanted to enhance the atmosphere of isolation and fear, as by specifying these details viewers will feel more involved in the photos.

201

202 traditional experimentation:

203

204 Traditional experimentation: wax process:

From the previous shoot cycles I have selected the most successful techniques, such as wax, stitching, collage and sellotape transfer, which I will explore, experiment and develop further this time. By adding wax to the images with empty walls I created a foggy effect, which enhanced the atmosphere of distortion and confusion. To document these experiments I placed them outside, but as the lighting was too bright wax reflected sun rays, therefore images did not work at first.

205 wax experiments: Successful examples

206 Traditional experimentation: collage In shoot cycle 3 I explored collage techniques, which worked well as they represented the place and communicate its atmosphere. In order to develop this technique further, I attempted to document two sides of this particular village - urban and rural.

urban

207 rural

208 Traditional experimentation: stitching process:

I have explored stitching previously, however in more radical way (creating lines and geometric shapes across the image). The top image did not work, as a white string with a purple wire were not defined, so that only a subtle effect can be seen. However by selecting the image with a subtle background, so that I will be able to highlight and bring to the front objects on the backdrop by defining them with a bright yellow string.

209 Traditional experimentation: image transfer I experimented with sellotape in shoot cycle 2, however I wanted to explore this technique further, by adding foil as a background. By folding the foil before adding it to the backdrop, I aged the images and added an atmosphere, which is inherent to haunted houses.

SHOOT CYCLE WHAT I AM GOING TO DO

5

During shoot cycle 5, I am planning to finish off the Unit 4 project, by shooting a wide range of photographs, communicating and transferring my knowledge and experience. Furthermore, I will create atmospheric images, both showing interiors and exteriors of abandoned structures, so that viewers will be able to feel the mood and experience these houses themselves.

HOW I AM GOING TO DO IT I am planning to revisit places, where shoot cycle 1 was shot, in order to see are there any alterations, as well as explore it more precisely, by paying attention to details, in order to create better quality images. Moreover, I will continue exploring Grashkovka (shoot cycle 2), by going further away from its main street and visiting appearing abandoned houses. This shoot cycle will be shot on 26-27 of march, so that I will have some time to edit photographs and experiment traditionally and digitally.

PLANNING THAT I HAVE ALREADY DONE As I have already been to these places, I am aware of locations, therefore have more time to explore unvisited places. Moreover, I have checked the weather, in order to prevent the issue of cancelling the shoot.

TECHNIQUES I AM GOING TO EXPLORE I am going to experiment with traditional and digital techniques, as well as test various angles, compositions and colour schemes, in order to create professional photographs. In addition, I will explore different presentational methods, to find the one which best symbolises the atmosphere and mood I am trying to create..

PROBLEMS THAT I MAY ENCOUNTER Having said that I have checked weather forecasts, there is a slight chance of precipitation during weekends. Moreover, as during the shoot cycle natural lighting source is used, time is limited, therefore, I might not get enough high quality images.

216

SHOOT

day

1

217 idea development: planning

Martova Kharkivskiy region Ukraine Image from the shoot cycle 1.

On the first day of the shoot cycle, I decided to revisit the ‘car-repair’ station. Surprisingly, over the course of this project, it was knocked down, so that only bricks were left. This change was possibly made, because citizens of the nearest village did not have enough building materials. Therefore, as I was not able to shoot here, I decided to visit other abandoned structures.

218 idea REFINEMENT: DOCUMENTING THE CHANGE

Image from the shoot cycle 1.

Unfortunately, this structure was knocked down as well for the same reasons. Although, I could not document the interior, due to obvious reasons, I decided to experiment with compositions and capture the major change. Whereas in the shoot cycle 1, this building appeared dark and mysterious, being de-constructed it represented rather nostalgic feelings.

219

As the weather was constantly changing, I was able to capture both strong shadows and soft lighting. By levelling lines on the top image, nature represented as a dominant, as it overtakes human activity with time.

220 EXPERIMENTATION: ATTENTION TO DETAILS Throughout the project focusing on details proved to be successful, therefore I decided to concentrate viewers on colours, attracting their attention with aesthetics. Although these photographs can be perceived as geometric blocks, looking at them for a long time will help to see miniature details symbolising abandonment - crack, drips of paint and washed out wall sections.

I used several composition rules, in order to create minimalistic compositions, such as ‘Rule of Thirds’, ‘Off-centre’, ‘Leading Lines’ and ‘Size Indicators’. Technical characteristics: ISO - 100, Aperture - f/7.1, Shutter speed - 1/100 sec.

Technical characteristics: ISO - 100, Aperture - f/9, Shutter speed - 1/80 sec.

221

There was a clear colour contrast between the building itself and bricks. Subsequently, by experimenting with a variety of angles, I was able to create a detailed close-up, showing cracks, in order to symbolise that nothing human made is endless, even the strongest construction.

222 idea development: CHANGE OF LOCATION

By visiting a third structure I was able to create a different type of imagery, as its purpose differs from everything I saw before. This once was a factory, however nowadays it is a local junk yard.

223

before The image above consists of numerous details, which can potentially distract attention from the construction itself. Therefore by adding a black and white layer, I have excluded colour, in order not to only make the image be easier to read, but to also add historical value.

after

224 Experimentation: creating compositions

Being influenced by several still-life artists before the shoot, I decided to compose objects together, to symbolise lost childhood. Nevertheless, the image above did not work, due to a large amount of completely different objects, whereas on the photo below, masks symbolises a zoo - children and a bottle - waste of precious time.

225 ussr

As I was walking through this ‘semiabandoned’ place, I recognised items, similar to the ones which my family used to have when I was small, such as toys, paint, USSR music plate etc.

everything decays with time.

228

229

230

SHOOT

day

2

231 idea development: planning

Grashkovka, Kharkivskiy region Ukraine

On the next day, I went to explore the second village - Grashkovka, however this time we visited hidden areas. Due to the clouds, the sun created a ‘soft-box’ effect, which evenly spreads the light, however during the postedit, contrast had to be emphasised. Despite the fact, that this time I was accompanied by my dad and my brother, they were starting to feel depressed as the shoot progressed.

232 experimentation: colour

The most striking feature of these abandoned houses was their colour coordination. It can be assumed that the most popular colours, approximately 50-60 years ago, were deep orange, sky blue and emerald green. On this location, I felt protected and covered, so by capturing bright houses I communicated the atmosphere.

233

236 contextual link:

Henk van Rensbergen

My work was inspired by this photographer, as his concept and photographic technique links to my vision. ‘My work reproduces the atmosphere that reigns inside. These places may have been abandoned by people but their presence is still very tangible. It is that eerie ghost-like feeling that stirs our imagination so much.’ - Henk Van Rensbergen.

237

This photographer explores current abandoned houses, where human activity is slowly disappearing. By filling the frame with wide range of objects, he tries to show both bizarre beauty and an undeniable decay of such structures. I personally feel that by using a wide angle lens and unpredictable view-points, Van Rensbergen ‘places’ the audience in this world of abandonment, where they are able to create their own opinions and views.

238

Technical characteristics: ISO - 320, Aperture - f/4.5, Shutter speed - 1/50 sec.

239 cross contextualisation: my images

As the photographer uses leading lines and frames the subject matter, I used the same technique, so that viewers’ eyes will follow hidden paths through the photo, concentrating on the object or interior inside the frame. I feel that these photographs worked, in terms of composition and colour range.

240 idea refinement: abandoned structure 2

As this house was almost completely destroyed, I was not able to find any objects inside. Nevertheless, by exploring it further, I decided to document its decay, as well as create feelings of a loss, mystery and darkness.

241

In almost every house I found old letters and photographs dated back to 1952, carefully kept for years. Although nowadays they are just a piece of paper, for their owners they were valuable memories.

Dear Genadiy Nikolaevich, Happy 1980 Year to you and your family. We wish you strong health, success in work and happiness in family!

242 idea refinement: 3rd house

This house was dominated by green tones and simple structure, which symbolises that the owner was usual worker, possibly farmer. I wanted to capture the personality, therefore concentrated attention on the colour and materials.

243

Technical characteristics: ISO - 640, Aperture - f/5,6, Shutter speed - 1/40 sec.

244

245 idea refinement: 4th structure

Walking past this house, my attention was attracted by a huge hole in the brick wall, where previous wooden walls can be seen. This shows, that once the owner was able to improve his house, all the saving were spent on the structure and interior inside, which shows that even these residents were very poor, they cared about their homes.

246 experimentation: windows / details inside

Due to the clay walls and tiny windows inside these houses was always cold and dark, therefore citizens used to place their plants, food, as well as spent their time next to windows. Such features were the main source of light during the day time, therefore citizens used to go to bed with the sunset and wake up with a sunrise.

247

As the amount of light dramatically differs inside and outside, during the post-editing I have added Levels. Brightness/Contrast in order to bring back mid-tones.

248

249

250

252 idea refinement: unknown structure

By visiting this house it was not possible to detect the original owner as it was empty inside, but full of various litter. As it only has two windows and a typical structure, it can be assumed that this building was used as a storehouse.

253 digital experimentation: black and white

To make it easier for the viewer to concentrate on objects and their meaning, I turned images black and white.

254 idea refinement: 5th abandoned house This particular house had both some interior features left inside and was taken over by the nature, therefore I wanted to capture this union of human activity with environment.

255

The colour range of the interior mostly consisted of greens, browns and whites , therefore I believe that this colour palette symbolised the nature itself. This architectural structure inside was dominated by lines, therefore I have attempted to create geometric compositions. Unfortunately it was not possible to define the owner, as no personal items but somebody coats were left.

256 contextual link:

Thomas jorion

Thomas Jorion is a photographer who captures abandoned buildings and urban ruins. He prefers to document the spaces, which once were a either a factory or a house. However nowadays they became abandoned for numerous reasons. There is a wide colour range on his images, but they are all muted and soft.

257

By looking at his pictures I can tell that Jorion’s work explores the decline of human architecture and environments, inviting viewers to see the relationship between the nature and artificial objects. All the images have similar compositions, shot from slightly above angle. Moreover, I can also recognize a presence of many doors and windows.

258 cross contextualisation:

259 digital experimentation: dodge and burn tools

In order to recreate Jorion’s work, I captured similar compositions. As I have mentioned before, I am also trying to ‘place’ spectators in the photograph, so I was very inspired by this photographer. Due to the constantly changing weather conditions (it was either cloudy or sunny). To balance the amount of light inside and outside of the building, I decided to use Photoshop and apply Dodge Tool to highlight interior and Burn Tool to bring back mid-tones and shadows around the window’s area. ISO - 250, Aperture - f/4, Shutter speed - 1/40 sec.

260 EXPERIMENTATION: dimensions INSIDE / OUTSIDE Composition experimentation, in order to show the audience how dimensions change dramatically, depending on the angle and the position of the view.

261 idea REFINEMENT: IMPROVING CRAFT

Experimenting with framing the subject, in order to improve my skills.

262 experimentation: wall as a canvas

Technical characteristics: ISO - 1000, Aperture - f/4, Shutter speed - 1/40 sec. During 50s-70s wallpapers were a deficit, as they were excessively expensive and very hard to get. Therefore, by comparing them to the art-pieces I wanted to enhance their initial value.

263

264

265

266 traditional experimentation: collage Previously I experimented with replacing backgrounds, however as I brought several postcards and notes from these buildings in Ukraine, I decided to scan them in. By using them as backdrops, the image will communicate the right atmosphere.

267

By cutting out dull sections of walls, door frames and replacing them with real writing from notebooks, I created new geometric compositions, which became abstracts. Although this experiment worked, the photos appeared 1-dimentional.

268

269

270 traditional experimentation: image transfer Having experimented with sellotape transfer and foil before, I felt that this technique has a potential. Firstly, by layering plain foil under the image helped to age it, as well as give it a certain historical value. Moreover, layering various materials between the image and foil created striking combinations, adding a mysterious atmosphere and distorting the image.

271

272 traditional experimentation: scratching

As well as foil experiments, scratching on the photographs had a big potential, therefore I experimented more with meaning of the words. Image below contains an old TV, so I decided to add text ‘Happy New 1956 Year’, to show the time period and enhance the historical value of the image.

273

The image below symbolises the zero value of time in these places, as life stopped there many years ago. To highlight this meaning, I scratched out numbers on the clock, as well as adding text. I believe that this experiment worked, as it improved both symbolic meaning of the image and visually created an unexpected combination.

274

275

276 traditional experimentation: heat transfer Having briefly experimented with heat transfer in shoot cycle 2, I wanted to also experiment with this technique further. By transferring images onto textured material it left marks, which have not only immediately aged photographs, but have also added an aesthetic of an old post-card founded by me in these buildings.

Post edit Lyndsey, Simon and Tom

285 post edit: Lyndsey During the post edit Lyndsey was more concentrated on showing the variety of imagery, which would both show my skills level and exactly transfer the atmosphere of these places - isolation and abandonment. Therefore her choices included landscapes, interiors as well as images containing symbolic objects, as such evidence is the best representative of these places and their owners.

her choices:

Although Lyndsey struggled to pick her favourite set of photographs, ultimately she selected 10 possible final images.

286 post edit: Simon As I initially had a wide variety of images, Simon was rather strict and selective during post-edit process. He had only selected images, containing windows, as not only do they create a strong visual set of photographs, but they have also a symbolic meaning.

After Simon picked his favourite images, we discussed the idea of using one of my photos as a background instead of having just a plain white board. By doing this, I will create a more realistic atmosphere and deeply communicate and transfer emotions and feelings to the audience.

287 post edit: tom Throughout the post edit, Tom selected images, which on his opinion best transferred the atmosphere of this villages and provide a diversity of angles to look from. Moreover, we discussed the idea of creating a minibook, where I will be able to fit more images as well as simple annotation about these places, objects, cards and reasons why are they abandoned nowadays.

his choices:

288 exhibition plan: By doing a post edit with Lyndsey, Simon and Tom, I was able to narrow down my images by getting a professional opinion and response to my project. Furthermore, during these sessions, I have not only got a new idea for the end of year exhibition, but have also decided to display the majority of my physical experimentations and present them as postcards. Such a notion was inspired by many postcards and old photographs found by me in these abandoned houses. Moreover, these cards were carefully kept as a vital sign of family, friendship, current relationships and nowadays they are the last representatives of this lost civilisation. However, I do not have a definite layout, so presented boards are just rough examples to see if selected images will work together.

conclusion

291

Being given an exam paper, which contained 8 themes, at the start of the Unit I found 4 titles that appealed to me. Such themes as The Journey, Mixed Media and Issues and observations initially attracted my attention and inspired throughout the whole unit. This is where I started to establish an initial style, concepts and ideas. Throughout the two-year course, my digital skills improved dramatically, due to practicing and experimenting with digital software such as Adobe Photoshop and Adobe InDesign. Furthermore, instead of just focusing on technical workshops, we were also taught conceptual ones, as they helped me to better analyse images, consider messages portrayed by photographers through their work and the essential need for ideas. To generate first concepts we were introduced to the power-point, containing artists linked to the given exam titles. Initially, I was particularly interested in abstraction, geometry and documentary, therefore considered photographers, such as Robert Frank, Saul Leiter, Lewis Baltz and Henri Cartier-Bresson. Subsequently, I created three original ideas and by making Pinterest boards, I was able to gather several ideas for this project, as well as get some inspiration. From these concepts, I picked the one which had the most potential and room for experimentation and development. By looking at several photographers during the process of shoot cycles (Robert Polidori, Robert Frank, Thomas Jorion etc), not only have I found an inspiration for experimentation, but have I also developed this unit, resulting in unexpected final products. Turning to the experimentation, I was able to refine both digital and traditional techniques. In order to experiment digitally, I have used skills and knowledge about Adobe Photoshop, previously gained in AS. Not only have I improved my editing skills, but have also found new techniques of recreating ‘art-pieces’. Furthermore, I explored physical techniques, such as stitching, collage, image-transfer, scratching on the photograph etc. In the middle of this unit, we went to a gallery, where I was able to get inspiration for physical experiments and was influenced to communicate messages through the photograph. Throughout this unit, my project developed, mostly due to the influence of contextual sources and various experimentation. What started as a simple documentary, was refined many times, in order to communicate messages, emotions and issues of abandonment. Overall, I am pleased with my outcomes for Unit 4, as I was able to create an uncommon view on one of the biggest contemporary concerns - human impact on our environment. In addition, this was a very personal project, as by being a resident of Ukraine I experienced these crucial changes, therefore wanted to present them to people, unfamiliar with such places existing nowadays. Ultimately, this two-year course was vital to me, as I have learnt enormous technical and conceptual information, dramatically improved my skills and creative vision, which is evident through my work. Moreover, I became expert in several professional software programs, which are vital to my future career.
