‘Mutatio’ This proposal is for a new building called Bristol Creative Association (BCA). It aims to challenge the current concept of teaching ART, MUSIC and BALLET, by subverting the idea that each creative area has to be taught in isolation. The school uses all the three mediums to bring the diversity of knowledge and experience into the existing teaching environment. This prevents the preconceived notion of students only being able to learn one chosen area; widely broadening their expertise. Four key principals are consistently followed trough the scheme: the Light, defining territories; the Beacon, attracting visitors; the concept of Flexibility; and the notion of interconnected spaces. The seamless visual and physical interconnections among Art, Music and Ballet sectors result in the formation of a vibrant community, where different artistic mediums are intertwined in order to allow students to learn and constantly inspire each other.

my initial concept
Despite being designed as a primarily after-hours school, the building is intended to be used by citizens and operate for the majority of the day, allowing an occasional passerby to enjoy the facilities and wander trough the architecture as if it is a part of their neighbourhood. This inspiring environment aims to help the final user to slow down and wonder: enjoy the view, indulge in the creative atmosphere, appreciate the music or even learn how to perform arts themselves. The building challenges structural applications of concrete and shows how one material can be utilized in many different ways.

‘Basil Spence’ A joint project with engineers. The main theme was related to creating a FLAGSHIP building which would showcase ‘aerospace’. I came up with the initial concept of the tower as a main exhibition pavilion. Featuring true hyperbolic timber-frame structure, which encompasses primary vertical exhibition space, with a series of presentation rooms revolving around it. Double helix stair in the tower works in tandem with special lifts, enhancing visitors’ experience. Having a very public entrance building also acts as a social hub for the citizens.

Placement 2019 - Yabsley Stevens Architects Yabsley Stevens Architects is a small practice, consisting of 3 people: 1 director and 2 architectural assistants. Although it is quite a small company they work with wide variety of clients, producing numerous projects, ranging from a very small 1 room refurbishments to expansive redevelopments of private residences. During my time at YSA I had the opportunity to perform a variety of tasks, ranging between stages 0-5. I managed to work on several smaller projects from the concept design, to construction drawings, visited sites and client meetings, prepared documents for presentations and applied for planning.

I started from sketches at 1:50 of rough ideas by hand. After the first meeting I turned them into Vectorworks document, which allowed to create precise working drawings to scale. Afterwards I worked them up to the standards of detail which stage 3/4 requires and handed over to the contractor for the start of work on site.

The next project included all the 5 initial stages of RIBA 2013 Plan of Work. This was a conversion of the existing house to fit the needs of the person with MS. I have learnt the importance of crucial understanding of the particular personal needs. During the time of this project I have been involved in all the meetings, coordinated the suppliers, creating concept design drawings, afterwards adding all the necessary technical information for the contractors to start it on site. I was able to conduct site visits, while the work was being done.

‘Venetian Fields’ A mixed-use building project located in Venice, which explores crucial influence of the particular time and place on the contemporary architecture. The building included boat repair workshop on the ground floor, along with the mask and costume shop to replace the existing facilities. It also accommodated the dentist, to improve medical services in the surrounded area; as well as residential block. Stepped language of the facades, along with other reinterpreted details resemble the existing architecture in Venice and allow for a better environmental strategy. During the development of this complex I have learnt how careful the new building has to be on order to not disturb sometimes fragile historic settings.

‘Beating the offside trap’

A joint project with engineers focused on constructing a bridge. This projects explores the importance of current time and cultural influences of the particular area on the building. Being located in Poplar, London, our main objective was to regenerate that ‘industrial’ area and create a ‘catalyst’ project for future developments in the neighborhood. We were able to do that by creating a unity between our building’s proposal and the surrounding landscaping, providing ‘urban gardens’ in order to involve citizens and enhance the connection between two sides of the canal. Working alongside engineers was a very important experience, as it helped to solve several structural difficulties from the start as well as pushed the idea further and improved the design.

‘Medical centre’

A project located in Bath. The brief was to create a Medical Centre facility which will thoroughly address the surrounding context. I decided to create a court-yard type building, where spaces were carefully divided by public and private sectors, providing separate entrances for staff and patients. General permeability of the building allowed for clear views onto the river from the entrance. Roof hierarchy distinguished the entrance and primary facade from the rest of the spaces.

‘Workshop Theatre’

A project called ‘Workshop Theatre’, incorporating auditorium space with all the supporting facilities, and a bar. Here is a series of plans and elevations exploring a concept of a building being one with its environment, as its design was mainly informed by the organic nature and curvy of the site. I wanted to push the idea further, by showing building’s relation to context and concept of two prime areas being separated by the public walkway, to create a closer interaction with an existing park.

Principle Techniques of the Main Structure External envelope of the theatre is made out of concrete (concrete cladding), which provides good thermal insulation and weather proofing with a little use of steel framework. Moreover, steel is mainly implemented in the Bar framework as it has the most suitable properties for a cantilever construction (high strength to weight ration). Though steel is heavily used on the first floor, ground slab is mainly completed out of concrete, with a small steel cantilever construction. All secondary steel beams are spanning less than 6 m. Due to the high loads of the building and limited site conditions pile foundations are going to be used. There is a flat roof, which allows for the building have a certain appearance. Building is permeated with structural columns instead of walls, supporting the weight as well as allowing for wide views.
Principle Techniques of the Main Construction Concrete Cladding NORSKREEN® M2 by Telling Architectural is going to be used for entire outside facade cladding. This will act as a rainscreen, as well as will help to lower carbon emissions, as provided by the British manufacturer. With the glazing being almost a half of the Bar’s facade it is a major contributer to the overall heatloss, therefore a low-E coated argon-filled double-glazing unit is implemented. Moreover it will be provided by a British manufacturer - VELFAC. Zinc stranding roofing system is implemented by a RHEINZINK, to make it easier to construct the building on site.

The design came from analyzing client’s profession, prioritizing spaces and exploring the a material application. I have also improved my knowledge about construction process and key strategies for designing residential houses.

A project about exhibition center for an architecture department, which would be occupied on the open day at the University. This project fulfilled my knowledge about metal structures and application of such material, as well as gave fundamental understanding of steel frame construction and material connections. My main aim was to explore the relationship of building with its context. At such a small scale the pavilion was influenced by the shape of the lake; with perforations inspired by surrounding trees, acting as a privacy measure.

A small project dedicated to exhibition space for a pot. The idea was to create a place which will define and multiply the features of a given object, as well as transfer its identity trough the atmosphere inside the place. First individual project, where I improved time management and hand drawing skills. Moreover, learned the basis of construction on site.

‘Daidala’ Joint project with engineers. A collaborative project with engineers, which focused on creating a model expressing weightlessness. Having built this model, I learned about the nature of materials, type of connections, as well as gained valuable knowledge about working in a team.
