We start with one mystery and, we end up searching for more. Vicenza is, among all sophisticatedly designed projects offered by the
School of Architecture, the most open ended one. This is partially because its goal is not a design proposal, thus shushing the ever-unsettled creator’s willful expressions. Rather, through humbly pacing, observing, taking notes, reminiscing...one is allowed to build up an amazing repertoire of cases, tools and techniques, without setting boundaries to where they should end or start. On the other hand, the displayable output from the project, though bluntly straightforward to the viewer’s eyes, is yet the most condensed report from the most extensive learning, both in lessons offered by Charlie and Luis and the physical and emotional experience known to each individual student only. Every project started much before the trip itself, and would end up recurring everywhere in one’s life as an architect and a person.
There were many memorable lectures: in the loggia of the Palladian
Basilica, racing through the small alleys of Venice, at dinner table in Casa, on the regional trains...but most of the learning was carried out by practice. In Veneto, one tunes one’s eyes to the sunlight rather than to the backlight of screens, builds up one’s muscles by keeping up with the pace of the day, adjusts one’s breath to synchronize to the rise and fall of the drawing hand and opens up one’s heart to allow in the spirit of the space. The ingenious designs of Palladio were not only appreciated with gasps of amazement, but functioned as vessels through which a witted, studious friend shared his knowledge and revealed his secrets. At other times, however, they return to being simply artifacts of wonder, awaiting curious minds and keen eyes to explore. With the passing of every day, trust is established between the students and the master - not through fame, but through understanding.
The lessons, however, are not limited to what is prescribed on the
program pamphlet. In the weekends we took trips to the Dolomites and to Lake Garda, where one was challenged by both nature’s beauty and ruthlessness and forced to take steps further into it. An explosion in the senses, one couldn’t help but sigh at the vastness and yet meticulous details of nature’s work, and the limits of our own kind: our strength, our reach and the amount of time we’re given. These optional trips curiously took on the crucial role of a reminder to a designer’s mind amongst the incessant inquisitions into great architecture and landscape architecture. A reminder that says that our goal as designers is not to rival nature’s power or generosity, but by stepping back and minimally adjusting pre-existing conditions, facilitating nature to will its resources in the most tender way.

May 26th, Friday Day 1: Vicenza; Reading constructed Spaces: Systematic + Geometric; Axonometyric
In the morning we walked up the hill Casa lies on to take a look at the whole city: the walls, the landmarks (fortresses, bell towers and the basilica), the city boundary, the woods, the water, the topography...rules lived by many Roman cities. In the afternoon we looked at the old city wall and gate and visited the park with bunny island. Charlie explained that the bunnies were there for they symbolize fertility. 1

Saturday. We were told to find a piece of Venetian wall within the city and sketch it. My choice wasn't a correct one but I'm still glad it made it to my sketchbook. Worth the mistake!

May 28th, Sunday Day 3: Day off in Venezia
This was the first of the many trips to Venice. A relatively big group too (if I recall correctly, Scott, Abe, Shani, Missy, Sara, Katy, Adriana, Michael, Jack, Zach) and I almost got lost taking a picture with Michael. For the first time in my life Venice was there in front of my eyes - which were busy getting lost in the shimmering Canal.

May 29th, Monday Day 4: Vicenza; Reading Constructed Spaces: Systematic + Geometric, Axonometric
This was the first official day of the Program and we were immediately asked to draw axons of a sloped structure with vaults. Thinking back it was definitely an effective stimulation if nothing else. I remember asking Charlie when does it start to get better and he said the latest he'd heard was after 2 weeks.

May 31st, Wednesday Day 6: Vicenza; Object + Field: Villa Capra - La Rotonda; Figure + Field; Two Point
This was a fast-pace morning. All the quick studies of the surroundings of Villa Capra were done within 5 minutes (or was it 3?). This however did prove to be an effective warm-up for explorations later in the day. VC had very interesting, distinct context to each side. This was also actually a perspective day by prescription. But somehow the building seemed to want an axon...so that's what I did. I especially enjoyed the series of quick exercises on the same topic in the afternoon. It was also a "short" day for we didn't have a lunchbreak. morning: villa capra; plan+axon studies 29

June 1st, Thursday Day 7: Venezia; Lagoon Inhabitation, Sacred + Secular: Torcello + Burano
Torcello is an amazing small inhabitation that conserves the antiquity of a Venetian city. The spiraling stairs led to the top of the Campanille, where the serenity of the lagoon and nearby landscape could be appreciated. This was the first among the many views that brought tears to my eyes during the whole trip.

June 2nd, Friday Day 8: Padova; Figures + Flows; Festa della Republica
Political campaigns, tall hats celebrating the Day of the Republic, the ever hustle&bustle market place...all was wrapped into this one morning in Padova. The afternoon for me was dedicated to gardens, plants. In the Sant'Antonio di Padova, I drew in the pleasant collonades, listening to little girls learning how to say the word Magnolia with their father. I started to be interested in anoxometric views of public spaces.

I hopped on a day trip with Jack, Zach and Heather to Venice. The group proved to be good company, leaving me an abundant amount of time to wander and implore my eyes and hands in the Museum of Oriental Art. I started to feel my eyes sharpened from Charlie's intensive trainings, for they were starting to read everything with reference and proportions, the paintings, the sculpture, the space...

We were given the task to find the pieces in Palladian Vicenza where old joins new, condition joins creation. Postscript The first book of the two is organized chronologically with the intention of reproducing and preserving, as much as possible, the Vicenza experience as a whole. Lucky enough, this is a book that is not expected to be responsible for a lot more people than myself, thus giving me the deliberation of seeing it as ruins instead of a conclusion. The post-processing of images has, in itself, been an interesting (philosophical) conversation with myself. Things to decide go beyond the structure and order at large, whether all the images in the sketchbook should make it into this book, whether everything on the pages (dead insects and other stains) should make it to this book, whether scan marks should be eliminated...I ended up taking out the bugs because sometimes they affect the reading of the information, but left a good amount of scan marks, smudges from micro-friction between pages due to heavy traveling and usage. This lack of enthusiasm in editing originates from my trust of my instructors' and my own intentions, and the recognition of time and wear as an active agent in history, as much as us. I wouldn't go as far as the transcendental ideology of what a book is. The imperfection records one's aspiration to perfection, the struggles, and the memories associated with those struggles, which to me is as important as, if not more important than, the drawings themselves. Book 2, however, exists to soothe a collector's dire wish to a closure, a destination, an arrival, a realization you could say, more so to my 2 years in the world of architecture than to the project itself. I've decided for it to be in the form of a tear-away book of postcards, or notes, where conversations are encouraged, about memories, of a place, a person, a moment. I welcome you to open it and take something away with you and I thank you for doing so. The tree needs to shed leaves to reserve its energy for another growth and in tearing the pages away you're helping me prepare for my next journey. I hope these words suffice to help me remember. yunni Charlottesville, 09/28/17
