GALLERY AS A SHELTER L G

C

University of Virginia | Spring 2017 Design Development | Prof. Michael Petrus Location: Charlottesville, VA Project Area: 1000 sf + Program: Gallery

It is in light we dwell, and in darkness we see. The project was inspired from a visit to the site. The vast farmland, in juxtaposition with the Blue Ridge mountains at a distance, sets the stage for an eternal tale about creation and decease. T The native pines and elms, rebel offsprings of this natural process, never hesitated to further contradict the slowly-sloping field or show off their sculpted skin. This is a shelter from the vast wilderness and its resonating questions. One starts the journey following a humble parapet that grows into a wall by contradicting the natural slope, and hopes to end up in the main gallery, with only a string of lightsource that takes one’s eyes from the ground to the sky. The local tree barks are embedded into the exterior concrete texture consciously in celebration of life while interior gallery walls are perfectly mute, ceding voice solely to light.

LIBRARY AS AN URBAN SUPPLY STATION

L G

C

University of Virginia | Spring 2016 Foundation Studio II | Prof. Jeana Ripple Location: Washington, D.C. Project Area: 50,000 sf + Program: Branch Library

Libraries never cease to exist, despite popular doubts, as long as there are humans alive. While it is true that in 21st century libraries as a building type are being constantly questioned, they as an aggregation of knowledge have taken on new forms and media to pair up with the more fragmented, busy and individualized city life. More and more often time spent reading is not a planned holiday, but a briefT refreshing encounter with a friend or lover. Aeliotheca gained its morphology from a vegetated path designed to connect pedestrians coming from different directions and is highly customized on its skin layers to interact with different weathers, serving both as a supply station for busy commuters and a home for a host of different spaces for different reading experiences among other activities.

Located at Dupont Circle, Washington, D.C., the immediate context is characterized by the busy intermodal traffic as well as the conglomeration of diplomatic headquarters. These characters demand the transformation of a private parking lot into a commuter-friendly access point for knowledge, which simultaneously nurtures the nearby “reading gardens“. In conceiving of a light structure to host the typically “heavy“ public infrastructure, the project provides a curious pathway to one of the most monumental entrances into the capital’s subway system as well as an access point to the cultural diversity represented in the neighborhood.

Diplomacy is tactful, appropriate, versatile. It is rooted in everyday life and cultivates from there relationships that form big decisions and state actions. The Embassy proposal is purposfully located in the heart of the city, housed within an adapted historical building with the intention of achieving low carbon footprint as well as maximize cultural exposure and exchange between the two countries involved.

As one of the latest, most ambitious development projects of the city of New York, Hudson Yards have drawn tremendous investment and interest. The high-end development brings inspirations as well as reflections: as density becomes a pre-condition as well as a pre-requisite of building, one is required to reflect constantly upon the question of community to preserve nonmonetary values to urban lands. Communities do not count simply on the imposition of an increased density. Healthy communities are those that find themselves place to celebrate, to debate, to exhibit and affect. The buildings are only a shell - the lesson lies in the way elements are connected.

Synthesis: Building Form

Final Form

The project recognizes the two different levels for pedestrian connections: the ground and the plinth level of the neighboring Hudson Yards development at which the High Line also lands. Emulating this logic on top of the high-density program requirement, various types of connections between towers are developed as a critique on the isolated building logic on the HY and to foster a healthy, well-communicated new community.

One of Rio de la Plata’s major branches, Rio Reconquista, suffers from heavy industrial pollution as well as seasonal floods, forcing cities and townships within the suburban Buenos Aires to rethink the questions of growth and recovery. While it is important that restoration campaigns are implemented and maintained, the long timespan of these benefit, if not rely on inclusion and proper programming of the lots in questions.

The project promotes a two-fold overarching guideline for natural restoration as well as urbanization. On the one hand, dedicating portions of riverside lots strategically to greywater overflow, thus allowing plant nursing and recreational activities to take place in the less risky zones; on the other hand, integrating all railway stations into a nodal systems along RP4 to develop focused civic activities to boost local economy and life quality, pushing the urban boundaries further towards the River and eventually achieving a programmatically integrated re-connection between city and the nature.

PRIORITIZED

RESIDENTIAL INDUSTRIAL PRIORITIZED URBANIZATION

The scheme identifies Ruta Provincial 4 (RP4) as the immediate ring to the road defining the Metropolitan area of Buenos Aires city, with the potential of being developed into a civic passage, thus extending the urban boundaries towards inland. In order to have the passage organically “surge“, a series of intersections between RP4 and various railway tracks are identified as nodes where civic activities intensify and start to establish new metropolises.

Vi En

Vicenza is, among all sophisticatedly designed projects offered by the School of Architecture,

the most open ended one. This is partially because its goal is not a design proposal, thus shushing the ever-unsettled creator’s willful expressions. Rather, through humbly pacing, observing, taking notes, reminiscing...one is allowed to build up an amazing repertoire of cases, tools and techniques, without setting boundaries to where they should end or start. On the other hand, the displayable output from the project, though bluntly straightforward to the viewer’s eyes, is yet the most condensed report from the most extensive learning, both in lessons offered by Charlie and Luis and the physical and emotional experience known to each individual student only. Every project started much before the trip itself, and would end up recurring everywhere in one’s life as an architect and a person.
