COMMUNITY BOATHOUSE Yunqian Li 2015 Spring Third Year Architecture Project
SITE The site of this profect is in the Claytor Lake State Park, Dublin, Virginia. It is a park besides 21 miles long Claytor Lake and with 472 acres of mostly hardwoods and pines in it. It is also a scenic sylvan area for boating &hikings.

SITE The idea is to create a “bridge� to connect the whole community with the new community boathouse, promoting activities in the whole park, at the same time providing a convenient srorage for boats.
BOATS This boathouse is mainly used by a rowing boats group, as well as privaty use for other people.

ARCH The basic form of arch has functions as bridge, structure, roof, stairs, and sun-shading. The sloped angle is also helpful for drainage. Boats are able to go through the space under the arch, leading boats into the storage or into the bay.
STRUCTURE & CIRCULATION All floors are hung from the double arches above. There are sixteen steel tension cables arranged in an array grid.

VIEW The main view is towards Northeast, where the lake and the historical building locate. Sun-shading panels block the direct sunshine from West.
ROUTE Based on the different activities, the routes are divided into two different directions.
Boat Route
CONTRAST All the exterior walls are transparent and made of double-glazing low-e glass panels, shaded by sun-shading screen outside. All the interior walls are opaque and made of light weight wood frames. Therefore it creats a contrast experience between wide and bright rooms and narrow and dark corridor.
Entrance The main entrance is at the top point of the lower arch, hiding behind the main building, functioning as main division in the circulation.
Screen The sun-shading screen is made of two layers, the aluminum layer reflects heat and the wood layer stops heat to be transferd into interior. It only needs to be moved within 6 inches to achieve all its funcions.
