DESCRIPTION: Nowadays, a school building must be able to adapt to constantly changing requirements. The primary School Christoph Merian locates in Basel in the northwestern Switzerland region. The task was to design an additional block of primary school which sits on the existing school campus. The project has been awarded the 1st prize in the open competition with 30 contestants. The proposal reconsiders the planning of the existing campus by editing the new building of the primary school and reshapes the organization of the campus as a whole. The proposal aims to renovate the existing primary school and to add a new extension which allows flexible use of the classrooms, group rooms and the teachers’ area. The courtyard becomes one of the most important areas of the campus. It serves as the extension of the main recreation area, located on the ground floor of the primary school. Used as a playing area, the central space turns into a flower meadow in summer and a white carpet in winter.

Today’s entrance becomes a hinge over which corridors extend in three directions resembling a windmill. In the new wing, the elevator and representative staircase are placed for both buildings. The staircase in the existing building is replaced by new toilets while the centrally positioned common technical facilities maximise energy flows. The new-wing corridor is designed as a learning landscape and works as a powerful and efficient connection.

The planned primary school is intended as a hybrid construction. A wooden building stands on a concrete base establishing a relation with the existing buildings. It also allows to limit the construction technology to a necessary minimum and to give emphasis to its contextual meaning and the use of local materials creating a pleasant and lasting warm indoor climate.
The ground floor of the new wing serves as a public zone oriented towards the street. The auditorium is lowered by 1.6 meters underground, resulting in compact building volume and with a direct connection between the existing and the new. The auditorium is a multifunctional space that can be used in various ways and can be opened towards the outside for public events. Above the concrete ground floor, three floors made from a wooden structure are dedicated to school use. The architectural protagonist of the new wing is the wooden-frame-structure. The wooden ribs and cross-pillars in conjunction with the concrete ceiling divide and structure space. The concrete and wooden building with the light balcony structure facing east invites for a colorful and playful appropriation of the space.

DESCRIPTION: Surrounded by gardens with a view of the Hรถhronen mountains of the Schwyz Alps, six solitary point-house buildings form an ensemble around an internal sequence of squares and paths. The volumes and living spaces are offset from each other in such a way that privacy and views of the landscape open up from each apartment. It allows the neighbors to see through and avoid faรงades that are placed in front of them. This dialogue is enhanced through direct access to all the rooms of each apartment onto a spacious green balcony creating a link to the garden. Gardens around the apartments are generous yet remain intimate thanks to clever planting, offering enough privacy and protection from prying eyes. The architectural expression and materiality aim to complement to the landscape solution. Massivity - clad in industrial undulated, Eternit - responds to private areas while filigranity; steel balconies and french-windows - respond to the exposure to shared green space. Despite the high density, the settlement appears calm, green, and picturesque.

TEAM: Valentin Ott, Martyna Michalik, Iurii Goncharenko (Hosoya Schaefer Architects) PERSONAL ROLE: 3D modeling, visualization, drawings, diagrams. DESCRIPTION: Nuolen is a small oasis on the shore of Lake Zurich. Here a village-scale meets a diverse natural landscape, high biodiversity, and a rich industrial and cultural landscape. Over the decades, gravel mining has produced a specific environment and a dynamic coastline in the village. The project aims to find a good balance between private and public areas so that natural qualities and access to the bank and views of the landscape can be preserved. At the same time, the industrial heritage has to be used to underline the specific character of Nuolen. One of the proposals is to convert the silo building into a unique living space or a boutique hotel. Some of the industrial conveyor belts will be preserved as historical artifacts and a part of the scenery. The building has 36 parking spaces and the entrance zone at the ground level of the concrete base. The steel structure will be exposed by removing the outer walls of the old silos. New residential prefabricated units can be integrated into the existing steel structures with structural reinforcement.

Different locations are linked by the lake promenade as the backbone. The individual actors - buildings, natural elements, landscape areas - are brought together with the simple intervention to form a spatial sequence and a narrative thread from which all areas benefit:
03_Nuolen_Switzerland_2019
• Village square with a new reorganised center street • Round, gravelly tree place at the seaport • Representative natural sea port path with a view of the port • Children’s pool at the former rifle house (conversion) • Molenmitte adult swimming pool with sun loungers, swimming islands, view of Bolligen • “Experience nature” floating plant islands in the lake • private gardens • Seating walls on Buebentalweg and on both sides of the construction paths, lined with trees
The solution of residential area is based on relocating the Seestrasse to the south and establishing the lake promenade in the north. The new street will be planted with groups of fruit trees. The daycare center, the underground car park and the first row of residential buildings are being built. The other buildings can then be constructed and the underground car park completed. The typology consists of row houses on the promenade and point houses with apartment buildings in the Seepark. The buildings are oriented northsouth and thus enable continuity, optimal private space and a view of both the hills and the lake. In this scenic location, three semi-detached houses with simple carports are being built. As small, unique lake houses, they enable natural living between hills and lake, promenade and swimming pool.

TEAM: Valentin Ott, Iurii Goncharenko (Hosoya Schaefer Architects) PERSONAL ROLE: urban design solution, 3D modeling, drawings, diagrams. DESCRIPTION: SBB railway company is one of the biggest landowners in Switzerland. Due to the optimization of railway tracks and adjacent areas, SBB offers to conduct a volumetric study for a narrow plot next to the railway station. The plot has specific program requirements and restrictions. Among the most challenging conditions is the high rate of noise produced by railway operation which does not allow the direct airing of the apartments from the side of the tracks and the relatively narrow plot generated by railway tracks compacting. In this context the study proposes six different scenarios to meet those conditions: - prefabricated linear building with an arcade and open staircase (h=24m) - long liniar building (h=13m) - high-rise (h=52m) and a short liniar building (h=22m) - small high-rise (h=16m) and a short linear building (h=13m) - two small high-rises (h=25m) and short linear building (h=16m) - one high-rise (h=52m) and a parking garage with recreation and public function on top.
26
The option of the prefabricated linear building has a more specific economical and political context, therefore it was developed with a higher level of detalization. The proposal aims to reduce the cost of construction and provide affordable housing with high-quality standards.
