The AVI CHAI Foundation was founded in 1984 by Zalman Chaim Bernstein zl. In North America, the foundation fosters Jewish literacy, religious purposefulness, and peoplehood/Israel at Jewish day schools and overnight summer camps. With a sunset date of 2020, AVI CHAI’s goal for its remaining years is to nurture and grow the institutions, people and ideas in these fields.

Dear Participants, It is our pleasure to welcome you to the iJED2014: Innovation in Jewish Education Conference. This year’s conference will draw attendance from school leaders, lay leaders, teachers, educational experts and foundations from all over the United States and beyond. We call this the un-conference because unlike many conferences that you have attended, iJED2014 was designed to provide you with an extensive exploration of the topics that are meaningful to you. Learning Lab leaders and academic scholars representing positive psychology, 21st century learning, diverse learner’s inclusion, and financial sustainability will challenge you as you work with your peers in envisioning fresh approaches to common challenges and learn from each other’s experiences. Together with our expert consultants, you will discuss the latest topics in cutting-edge educational practices, focusing on strategies, experiences and techniques with regard to the obstacles Jewish day schools face every day. There will even be a day especially for teachers and an opportunity for you to be the expert and lead or participate in an iPlayground conversation where you can share and reflect on any innovations that your school has recently experienced. The potential for discovery and innovation over the next few days is truly limitless! Paradoxically, the concept of innovation is not a new one. In fact, for the Jewish people, the need to innovate is deeply ingrained in how we approach learning by virtue of the fact that every year, upon the completion of the Torah reading cycle on Simchat Torah, we immediately begin the cycle all over again. The purpose of reading through the same scriptures year after year puts into practice the idea of Shivim Panim La’Torah—there are 70 faces to the Torah, meaning that there is always something new that can be learned! All of us from the Schechter Network, the YU School Partnership, Curriculum 21, Maytiv/IDC Herziliya School of Psychology, Koren Publishers Jerusalem, Gateways Access to Jewish Education and PEJE are proud to partner together in taking this approach and applying it to Jewish day school education. We created this conference to unite the major stakeholders of Jewish education to collaborate and shine a new light on the best practices, challenges and opportunities that face Jewish day school leaders and educators today. We would like to extend a special hakarat ha’tov to the Avi Chai, Kohelet and Covenant foundations, Lippman Kanfer, Ira and Sheri Balsam, and the Jewish Education Innovation Challenge for making this conference possible through their generous sponsorship. Thank you to the sponsors of Teacher Day: Yeshiva University’s Azrieli Graduate School of Jewish Education and Administration and the Jewish Theological Seminary’s William David Graduate School of Jewish Education. We are thrilled to share with you this unique opportunity to press pause on our everyday lives and take the time to tap into each other’s wisdom, become inspired by each other’s vision, strengthen our connections, and share in our joint mission of taking Jewish education to unprecedented heights. We invite you to share what you learn over the next few days on Twitter and Facebook using the hashtag: #iJED14. We are looking forward to sharing, learning and growing with all of you. Sincerely, The YU School Partnership The Schechter Day School Network Curriculum 21 Maytiv/IDC Herziliya School of Psychology Koren Publishers Jerusalem Gateways Access to Jewish Education PEJE 1 | #iJED14
