ABOUT THE TWO WEEK ONLINE PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT MODULES Education is constantly evolving. Stay current with the biggest topics in the field. Our PD modules are two weeks long, fully online, and asynchronous. Each week opens on Monday and closes Sunday night. Participants have that week to log on and complete the work before it closes. Each week of our modules are made up of the following 4 components: LEARN: In this section, participants will watch a short video or listen to an audio piece from the facilitator, which will frame the work assignment for that week. RESEARCH: In this section, participants will read articles that will help them approach the assignment for that week. APPLY: This section is where participants will complete the weekly assignments. SPRING 2014 ONLINE MODULE COURSES Understanding by Design: Move Ahead by Looking Back March 10 – 24 Facilitated by Dr. Moshe Krakowski
Learn how to create curricular units that have goals, activities, and assessments fully aligned. Using the Understanding by Design framework as a starting point, we will identify our goals for a curricular unit and think about what types of learning activities and assessments would support those goals. In particular, we will try to explore how different goals for the same subject matter might lead to very different curricular activities.
Cultivating Reading Enthusiasts from the Outset: Creating a Positive Introduction to Reading Fluency (Grades 1-3) March 10 – 24 Facilitated by Esther Tarkieltaub
This course will illustrate how to create a positive introduction to reading fluency and comprehension that will set the stage for future academic success. Participants in this course will immediately be able to put into practice strategies for decoding and reading comprehension. Flexible Grouping: Reaching More of Your Students More of the Time (K-8) March 24 – April 7

Learn how to create user profiles or other methods of collecting data about students’ interest, readiness, and learning style preferences and use this data to create effective groups that best serve the students. Use flexible grouping philosophy and methodology to identify various forms of grouping and when to apply each one.
Israel Education in the 21st Century March 24 – April 7

Teaching modern Israel in the Jewish Day School extends beyond the classroom walls and affects the way our graduates develop a relationship with Israel. In this module we will explore how to teach about the country and the culture to prepare our students to go out into the world equipped with the right information and the proper resources. This course will help participants develop lessons on modern Israel for today’s students.
Creating a Bully-Free Culture in the Classroom April 28 – May 12

In this module, participants will learn how to create a bully free culture in the classroom by learning to identify bullying and cyber-bullying. They will define the roles of the bystanders, the parents, and the teachers. Teaching Israeli History to Tweens and Teens April 28 – May 12

According to the latest Pew Survey on American Jewish Culture and Attitudes, 31% of American Jews said they were not very/not at all emotionally attached to Israel while 39% reported being “somewhat” attached. What can be done to raise these numbers? A strong foundational understand of the history of Israel is essential to the survival of American Jewry. This module will provide tips and tricks for implementing Israel education that will resonate in a middle and high school classroom. Participants will discover how student exposure to the History of Israel can lead to increased levels of religious commitment and identity.
