Week One
Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.
According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols? (100 words Maximum)
Diagram is a simplified drawing showing spatialising information in terms of spatial quality in a period of time. According to Zeara-Polo, a diagram is different from the kinds of signs which is a stimulus pattern that has a meaning. He classified the sign into three classification: icons, symbols and indexes. the icon is signifier with a physical resemblance to the signified, the thing being represented; the index is a signifier demonstrating some evidence of the signifier and the signified, symbol is a signifier with no resembblance between the signifier and the signified. In contrast, Diagrams express within a dynamic object but they do not play a representional role for their dynamic object, INSTEADmediate between physical constructs and concepts or precepts on an organisational level.

Precedent Analysis
Precedent Image
Top: Elevation view; Botton: Plan view
Isometric view of exploded layers
The modelling process was seperated into four steps as structural frame, timber diagonal cladding, top plates and basement. By referencing to the given images, the outlne of framework was traced from plan drawing first and then was extruded to proper height from section drawing. The cladding was built in accordance to the direction and amount shown on elevation, ensuring the precision of modelling. Top plates and basement were built accordingly to the exist part of model along with the provided images and dimensions. The model was also built in seperation of front and back part in order to analyse the main feature of structure in later illustration work. 3

Week Two
Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discusses how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use. (100 words Maximum)
Herzberger explains the concept by demonstrating the idea of “in-between” space which can be interpretated as the transition between areas of different orders, allowing meeting and dialogue. In my precedent study, the queen’s park pavillion held three cube bocks of different volume, which has an transitional ramp area between the entrance of structure and the public ground area. In terms of the pavillion’s concept about linking nature with the pavillion, the ramp is an explicit expression of this kind of connection. People feel privacy as on the part of the structure, meanwhile can feel independence and freeness to nature as still at outside the framing structure. This ramp corresponded to Herzberger idea as it is not an extrme functional componenet, but provided this duality of spatial quality of the threshold.

Week Two
Isometric
North-East Isometric: Queens park pavillion 2015
No Glazing on top
Glazing on top
The pavillion has a main concept of allowing the exhibition contents and the park to be simultaneously experienced.the isometric drawing select the part where can demostrate this attempt of the connection between plants and place to show. 1. A visual permeability was created through the spaced timber framing and cladding battens.
Structural frame
Clad in black to show the overall effect of facade of the pavillion, and timber framing in white to constrast as a framing structure. 2. In-between space was applied to this pavillion with ramp area, connected between the natural landscape and the pavillion exhibition. The threshold is located not only at the ramp area but inside the pavillion to link through three interlocking space. Therefore, a simutaneous flow is created throughout the pavillion. From that, I learned how threshold define two spaces in terms of privacy(public to private) or functionality (different functions of rooms) and how they finally become an ensemble. 3. Three interlocking garden rooms of varying heights and exhibits ensured ever changing views and orientation. Interestingly, the pavillion select only two rooms out of three to cover with the glass glazing on top which was highlighted in the drawing. The partial glazing components in terms of weather condition adds on more dynamism to the circulation inside the pavillion. From that,I learned how architecture can control the dynamism of circulation though various size and features of different components. It can be very simple variation, but may achieve great effect.

The circulation diagram demostrate the primary circulation path, shortest pathway and the visitor viewing pathway in the bottom image. In the middle, the attraction area is shown using density map
Bottom image analyses transitional area of ramp as a threshold, allowing people to stimutaneously experience the landscape and inside exhibition. The middle image demostrates the four openings framed
in responded to the exhibition of arts and crafts as main attrating points. Beside, heat map are used to show where people might gather and talk in terms of sitting area(benches) and free space(one of the interlocking rooms) in the same diagram
by structures, and also using shaded blocks to represent the different height of the three interlocking rooms. The top image express the glazing part on top of two rooms and around one which could affect vistor’s behaviour of using threshold according to weather.
