01 165 GATES AVE PRIVATE RESIDENTIAL

This townhouse, nestled in the Clinton Hill neighborhood of Brooklyn, sits at a unique corner where a bustling avenue meets a quaint local street. Stretching across four levels, its slender design is illuminated by extensive windows on both ends, a feature not commonly found in typical townhouses. The interior is connected through a central staircase, harmonizing the vertical and horizontal spaces with continuous wood flooring, embodying a crafted, nature-inspired ambiance. Its interior design is marked by a warm, inviting color palette, fostering a seamless transition between different areas and extending the living space to the outdoors. Strategic color use within the home delineates various functional zones. High-quality, durable materials like stone, brass, and timber highlight a commitment to longevity and sustainability. Attention to detail is paramount, weaving together a rich array of textures including linen, cotton, velvet, horsehair, and cashmere, adding layers of luxurious comfort. LIVING ROOM In this home, every wall stands as a tribute to the owners’ deep-seated love for art. As a gallerist based in Brooklyn, the owner embrace art not just as a form of expression but as a comprehensive way of life. The residence features striking contrasts, such as pristine white walls against the rich textures of black marble and golden accents, seamlessly blending classic elegance with modern design. This fusion creates a harmonious balance reminiscent of yin and yang, where hard and soft elements coexist.

The living room is particularly luminous, further accentuated by an exquisite light fixture from Apparatus. Here, sensual materials like marble, horsehair, lacquer, and porcelain are artfully paired with hand-patinated brass. This combination of textures and finishes crafts an artistic space that not only reflects the owners’ unique character but also showcases their refined taste to visitors.

MASTER SUITE

The second level of the dwelling is thoughtfully crafted as a master suite, embodying both elegance and comfort. While the residence predominantly showcases a palette of muted tones, it offers delightful surprises in its smaller rooms, adding character and depth to the overall design. This level masterfully employs a dynamic interplay of patterns and tones, creating an environment that resonates with warmth and familiarity. The careful selection of textures and colors ensures that each space, while unique, maintains a cohesive and inviting atmosphere throughout. This approach not only enhances the aesthetic appeal but also ensures that the master suite remains a serene and welcoming retreat within the home.

02 DAWN TO DUSK AMTRAK TRAIN

The concept of this interior design project for Amtrak’s sleeper and dining cars is to create a comfortable and flexible space that enhances the travel experience for passengers. The design incorporates prefabricated pods in the sleeper car with curtains for privacy and a partition system that allows for a more spacious environment when desired. The dining car features modular and deformable tables and chairs, as well as multiple seating options, bars, food vending machine and lounge areas that allow passengers to dine while taking in the breathtaking views of the mountains and coastlines. Moreover, the curtain, acting as a canvas, captures the ever-changing outdoor views, bringing them to life in the room. Natural wood and wood veneer elements are used throughout the interior to reflect the beauty of the surrounding landscapes. The overall goal is to provide passengers with a unique and unforgettable experience that not only caters to their basic travel needs but also elevates their journey.

03 THE AIRY HOUSE COMMUNAl DWELLING

People are more likely to connect each other with nature. Natural ventilation could not only help to keep occupants calm, reducing the stress, but also improve their attention. In this project, the house invites natural wind and light indoors. In fact, seeing natural movement indoors could be more beneficial than seeing nature outside through a window. Starting from the idea, the space is designed in an axis, providing a long living room in the center, with all activities spreading out. The idea that capturing and drawing the wind through is to provide voids along the living area. There are no large solid walls longitudinally, instead, using the full-height sliding doors for separation and coherence. One of the most significant designs is to create a “semi-private” space by introducing softweight chiffon curtains, connecting people to the public living room harmoniously. While sliding the full-height walls to the sides enlarge the space, and the room becomes more airy. At the same time, they can all have a view of the central environment.

Concept

Transparency Transparency could be approached by either using translucent material, or using blocks to create solid and void. It can expand the space visually, and let more light come in.

Transparency + Movement: of light, air, sound

The movement of light and air are similar. As the interior is facing South, towards North, the southern part shares more sunlight and temperature. The air is also coming in and going through the whole interior. People‘s movement is affected by the movement of light and air as well.

Transparency + sustainability Sustainability could be a greenhouse with trees inside a room, absorbing carbon dioxide. Also when increasing the natural light transmission level, less energy is used. What‘s more, green can bring people together. It can also lighten up our feelings, and making the interior more welcome.

23

Soft material like curtains are applied in the longitudinal side, hard material like wood panels are set in transverse direction due to the movement of air and sunlight.

THE AIRY HOUSE COMMUNAl DWELLING

Public area is located in the center with all functions. A space that encourages people to connect and interact. Public living room, kitchen, dining and meeting bring diverse activities, attracting people to be together. Curtains are aligned through the living area from the entrance to the back. Translucent material for each unit’s wall towards the middle, increasing the level of light transmission.
