Perseverance

Determination and Hope

Editorial|Magad Kalta 2

Jesus’ satisfaction came from doing what His Father had asked Him to do.
Jesus worked as the Father directed and He also rested as the Father directed. In Luke 5:15, we learn that crowds flocked to Jesus. Should this have been a time of intensified ministry and outreach? Perhaps Jesus’ disciples thought that revival was about to break out. Yet in verse 16, we read that Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray. Why? Because at that time, that was God’s will.

“Jesus said, “Open your eyes and look at the fields they are ripe for the harvest.”

I

recently returned from a mega-outreach in the Philippines, where over 100 participants were privileged to reach out to thousands of people, in several areas. As I take time to reflect upon what God has done through us, I have to acknowledge that it wasn’t always easy and we regularly felt the physical tiredness that comes at the end of long days of ministry. However, I have also been rejoicing in God’s enabling and empowering to do His will.

In John 4, we read that Jesus was tired and rested beside a well in Samaria as the disciples went in search of food. The chapter details the story of Jesus’ interaction with the Samaritan woman, as He gently leads her into the truth, despite His physical tiredness. When His disciples returned they urged Him to eat. He replied “I have food to eat that you do not know about.” When pressed further He said, “My food is to do the will of Him who sent me and to accomplish His work.”

The Sabbath was a day of rest, a day the Pharisees had put many restrictions on to try and encourage said rest. Yet Jesus healed many on the Sabbath (Matthew 12:9-14; Luke 14:1-6; John 5:2-17) saying “My Father is working until now, and I am working.” (John 5:17). Jesus worked because it was the will of God.
When the storm was raging around the disciples in the boat, they were terrified. Jesus was asleep! How could Jesus sleep at such a time? He knew the character and will of His Father and was therefore able to sleep regardless of circumstance. But then, what about the night of Jesus’ betrayal - that long night before Jesus’ torture and execution? Surely on that night, above all nights, Jesus should have rested in order to face his coming ordeal? But no, we find Jesus in the garden praying – seeking God’s will.
As I think on these things I want to challenge and encourage us with something Joy Dawson once said; “if we follow God whole-heartedly we always end up with a fair deal because He is a just God.”
‘Be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect’ (Romans 12:2) Let us submit fully to God’s will and be sure that, whatever the situation, God’s plan is perfect and will provide all we need. WildFire, which equips families and people of all ages to live the Kingdom of God in the context of everyday life, started out on this adventure with the usual modus operandi and strap-line of #RaiseTheJoyLevel. Throwing community parties, sports tournaments, dance-offs, and devouring lots of food, whilst celebrating communion in some of the world’s poorest villages were daily activities. It is in such simple acts of worship and community that the WildFire team model the Kingdom of God and begin to come alongside locals. These deep friendships lead to all sorts of collaboration in Kingdom. This year the team worked closely with Glorious Hope United, a football team that lives Kingdom and doubles as a church, led by a world-renowned ex-drug-lord, whose life got rocked by Jesus. This partnership led to significant times of ministry in communities where Glorious Hope have been working over the past years: being invited into people’s houses for dinner and sharing the gospel; 10 year-olds laying hands on the sick and seeing healing; bringing communities together through football to share life and experience the Kingdom. This ministry culminated in many people giving their life to the Lord, and several new Bible studies being started in a relocation community for victims

of Typhoon Tsen Dong. These meetings have now become a fledgling ‘church plant’, hoping to acquire a building in order to serve the community of people living in the isolated relocation site. The WildFire team were also able to visit and strengthen the teams working as part of Mega Outreach from The Kings Lodge. The village of Villa Nueva exploded with healings. People were being brought to the team from the whole neighbourhood to have hands laid on them - deafness, crippled legs, glandular conditions, stomach ulcers, and the list goes on -all healed by the power and love of God working through the team. The team really sensed a spirit of despair lifting from the village as we lived life there together with the locals. The beautiful thing about repeat visits is the opportunity to develop sustainable projects in partnership with YWAM Cagayan de Oro. This year saw the expertise of the team put to good use in establishing a sewing co-operative for mothers, providing a solid income, and a leather working, greeting cards & phone accessory project for the youth which will allow them to pay their own way through high school and university. Because of this new endeavour, YWAM Urban Key answered the call of YWAM Ireland and the International Forgiveness Institute to attend the Faith in Conflict Gathering in Beirut, Lebanon, with a team, in order to gain more understanding about the refugee crisis. Here are some stories of the people we met there: Syrian Muslims Meeting Jesus Muhammad and Zuhrah* are a young, Muslim couple living in Damour, Lebanon. They are two of the 1.1 million Syrians taking refuge in the neighbouring country. Their small daughter recently recovered from an illness that was caused by a blood virus. International organisations and the Lebanese government have, however, made it difficult for Muhammad and Zuhrah to raise finances to support their family. Yet, in spite of all the challenges, Zuhrah and Muhammad are getting closer to Jesus. They said that Jesus healed their daughter and provided for all of their needs. Jesus has miraculously provided for them through impossible odds!

Lebanese Discipling the Nation Ramy and Roulla Taleb, YWAM Lebanon, are a Lebanese couple living in a suburb in the south of Beirut. This young couple, aside from working with the Syrian refugees, have a vision of transforming Lebanon through forgiveness. Due to bitter memories of being occupied by different nations in the past, and the new influx of refugees from Syria, Lebanon is at the brink of Civil War once more. Still, God has a plan to break the cycle of violence. Ramy and Roulla are planning to bring the forgiveness journey with the heart to reconcile all the different warring parties in their nation through the education system, starting with youth and children. They believe that the future rests in the hands of the young, who can bring change to the nation. At the moment, the couple are praying to find a property where they can bring young people both Muslim and Christian, Lebanese, Palestinian, and Syrian - together to find common ground. They need support to transform Lebanon through the power of forgiveness. How Can We Help? YWAM Urban Key, in partnership with YWAM Italy, would like to invite you to a Christmas for the Refugees in Italy in December. Also, we are continuing our monthly Calais visits. O

ne of the hot issues in the news today is the continued escalation of the Syrian Refugee Crisis. People take boats traversing the Mediterranean, and some of them have made it to Calais, France, with the hope of eventually arriving in the United Kingdom. We at YWAM Urban Key, led by Jose and Rosana Liste, went to Calais on 12 August to see the reality of the situation with the hope to starting a ministry.

God didn’t just call us to go into all the world, He also taught us how to do it (Matthew 28:18-20). If He calls us to work in government or business, education or communication, to be a mother, a scientist, a pastor or an artist, He has things to teach us.

The ministry of TTI currently has 20 associates, 18 part time staff and 3 full time staff who are living in different parts of the world. One of our small teams is located in West Sussex, England.

It is our ambition to run more TTI weekend seminars at local churches, to look specifically at God’s principles for government, business, arts, church, and family. If you are interested in having one of our TTI seminars come to your church or YWAM location please contact us on our website. We would appreciate your prayers as we continue to equip others to build God’s kingdom here on earth! Our next Reality Check will be held at YWAM Harpenden, England in autumn 2016. The second seminar that we offer is the TTI ‘Rewire’ 6 week Intensive. It is in this seminar that we teach students a critical thinking model to help them think more biblically about some of the world issues we are facing today, such as mass migration, gay marriage, gender issues and religious extremism. “Its 5:30am. We have finished our training camp and this group of six puffy eyed travellers climb into a taxi to the airport where we will travel on to Serbia. We arrive at our destination, which is a beautiful 36 Celsius. Our luggage, however, arrives at another airport and will not make it to us for another day. A not so perfect start. We stay with the local YWAM team four hours south of the capital, Belgrade, in a city called Užice. Day one and our first activity is face painting and balloon modelling in the city centre. We are mobbed by kids for three hours before we run out of equipment/became really hungry. A few days later we are walking through the city again and a group of kids, recognising us from the face painting, run up to us and give the girls a hug. We play basketball with them for the rest of the evening. We try telling them about Jesus and why we are in Serbia but they say they have to go.

Advance | Winter Issue 2015

We visit Zlatibor, a Serbian holiday spot. We want to find a shaded area and end up talking to a man selling magazines. Being foreign, he starts asking us questions, which lead into us praying for him and seeing his ankle healed! He says it was like “sparkles came out of your hands!” We see three more healings when we return to Užice; this time with that group of kids we had played basketball with. We always bumped into them; I am convinced they were stalking us! While once again playing basketball, Luka is hit in the face and sits out to recover; this is our opportunity. We pray for the pain to leave and Jesus does his thing and he is healed. Everyone is suddenly open to conversations and for prayer now. We see two more of that group healed and share the gospel with them. The outreach was great, the participants left Just Go talking about how they could use what they have learnt to reach out to their friends and get more involved in what their home churches are doing. If you want to get involved and maybe even come next year, get in touch. Andrew Carribine

Today, YWAM Milano is an urban team, made up of 12 people, mainly focussed on evangelism and training. As well as being the only base in Italy that do DTS, we also run courses like School of Biblical Christian Worldview and Basic Leadership School. YWAM Milan’s goal is to influence the spheres of fashion, politics, arts and justice. We do lots of evangelism, everything from Alpha, street work, language community, teens at risk, English Summer Camp, King’s Kids, Marriage Course, working with Catholics as well as focussed overseas outreach on Moldova and Libya. Many of these are due to volunteers, faithful outreach teams (principally from San Francisco) and many friends who come to Milan.

This year was the first year we ran English Summer Camp. We went to YWAM Harpenden, England with a bunch of loud Italian teenagers. Only a few of them were Christians. We taught them English language and culture. One teen began the camp by declaring “I’m here just because my parents sent me. I don’t want to do anything.” And by the end was saying, “It was incredible, God spoke to me. I definitely want to come again next summer”. “You know, this morning JESUS REALLY talked to me.” We are excited about the future. We would love to have a ministry centre for hospitality, a classroom, and office space; we are believing for God’s provision. We are partnering with other YWAMers to look at pioneering YWAM in Rome. Our ministries in Milan continue to grow. These are exciting times and we are continually trusting God for more fruit. Luigi and Paola Tommasi

Summer is the busiest time for us in YWAM Milan. We have many different outreaches and a lot of opportunities. King’s Kids camp, located in our beautiful Alps. This year consisted of over 50 people, kids and teenagers, many of whom had encounters with Jesus. One 8 year old said “... you know, this morning JESUS REALLY talked to me. I didn’t know it could happen. It was so strange. It was so cool. You know what? I would like to memorise the Bible! ...” This was the first time he had been on a Christian camp and is now a believer in Jesus.

fter doing Discipleship Training School (DTS) in 2002, then staffing two DTSs at YWAM Harpenden, England, we moved to Milan in August 2008. At that time we were the only YWAM presence in the nation, apart from another couple in Pescara (centre of Italy). We moved to Milan because this city is the economical capital of Italy. A city of influence for the nation and around the world. In Milan, there are around 3 million people from all over the world with many possibilities to reach out to them.

Community|Development 10

“Please, could you be a bit less helpful?”

These days, it seems like everyone has a story of something benevolent they did for those less fortunate, whether here or abroad, among those who are challenged economically, physically, or socially. Our stories can make us sound like good people indeed! But what about those we visited? How did they feel upon our departure? Annette Jandrell had been working as a midwife when God called her to join a YWAM team in Cambodia who were initiating an integrated community health development programme. Her medical background had taught her that prevention was better than cure. Education in related fields such as nutrition and sanitation was needed, but the team first had to learn a lot more from and about the community. “Life is interrelated!” says Annette. “You can’t just treat physical health without knowing about their resources, lifestyles and even relationships.”

Advance | Winter Issue 2015

Community development puts the community at the centre of every decision and action. “The community leads and we follow”. A good practitioner learns what skills and resources they already have – they need not depend upon outsiders. We can learn to empower communities to choose how their unique story will unfold. Like us, they are made in the image of God - and we can celebrate their history, skills, resources and assets, drawing out who they are, as people made in the image of God. Annette says, “Their story has been going on for a long time. God has a plan for the rest of that story, which you may be able to help them explore during the brief time their story merges with yours.” In Cambodia they assisted villagers in putting together an action plan, which meant listing and prioritising the needs the community itself deemed most urgent. Villagers chose those among their community who would lead these development projects, and these men and women were trained by the team. One result was better food security as they learned to produce vegetables and breed fish throughout the year.

“Would you like to be this kind of ‘helper’?”

They soon realised that they did not have to depend upon outsiders and Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) - who would often want to tell them who they should be. “The Christian world has a good grasp of what has been known as the ‘two-handed Gospel’ - meeting physical and spiritual needs. In Genesis 3 we learn that the Fall involved the breaking of four key relationships - with God, one another, ourselves and all of creation. The Kingdom of God is about all of these being restored.” “You can’t just treat physical health without knowing about their resources, lifestyle and even relationships.”

Would youlike to be this kind of ‘helper’? YWAM England’s Community Development Hub connects those who are, or hope to be, involved in holistic ministries like these. The Hub: •

Promotes principles of good community development practice

Creates training opportunities through the Community Development School, seminars, and consultations

Connects skilled and interested people Becky Mehaffey

A team building exercise involved lowering a large number of sticks together. The villagers realised “these sticks cannot be broken if they are all togetherthat is how we must be!”

info

A Harpenden-based School of Community Development features 12 weeks of learning how to apply these principles practically. Those recently trained went out to serve in a remote rural area of Zimbabwe. They began by listening to local leaders tell the village stories, so that the students could discover their resources and experience. This enabled them to take an ‘assets-based approach’ by focusing on what they already have and what they already know. Hope and vision began to flourish. Perhaps most importantly, the village began to realise that they all had to work together to see their community change.

Staff Stories|Bob & Sarah Opper 12 12

A

fter being part of the original Next Wave Crew in 2007-2008 and getting married in 2009, we moved to Wrexham, North Wales, to help Mark & Sue Vening re-pioneer the Discipleship Training School and YWAM team in Wales. Today, we’ve seen the DTS established here, as well as several other ministries in town, and our staff team has doubled! From the time I, Sarah, did my DTS in Denmark is 2000, I had a sense of calling to lead DTS’. I did a “Making Disciple Makers” (essentially DTS staff training) school in Hungary in 2002, and immediately following staffed a DTS in the Netherlands. Four years after a detour of working for my home church, I was back into YWAM on the Next Wave where I led my first DTS. In Wales, I led four more between 2010-2014 – all the 9 month model, with lots of extra local outreach complementing the classic lecture phase. I’ve now stepped aside from direct leadership of DTS in order to train and support younger, newer DTS leaders. In order to equip myself for this role I’m doing a YWAM training course to become a life coach.

Nearly three years ago, he joined the management team of our town’s newly formed local Trussell Trust foodbank two full days a week (as a YWAMer), and takes care of stock control and volunteer coordination. Our foodbank feeds over 5000 people a year so this is a very rewarding role. We like to joke on our team that “Bob speaks machine” as there aren’t many things he can’t fix. Even without formal training of any kind he will try his hand (usually successfully) at fixing diesel engines, boat generators, water heaters, plumbing problems, electrical issues, brick work and installations of all kinds of hardware around properties. The property God released to YWAM Wales in 2009 has been transformed through Bob’s handiwork and his leadership over maintenance. We see ourselves as having a specific and important role to play in YWAM – as detail-oriented, get-it-done administrators, who serve and support the bigpicture visionaries YWAM tends to attract. We love our calling and how we’re living it out right now, and hope (and plan) to continue in YWAM for our whole lives – whether in Wrexham or Wales or elsewhere.

For the last three years I’ve been serving as the National Visa Coordinator for YWAM England & Wales, which is a role that suits me perfectly! My top results on “Strengthsfinders” are Input and Communication, which means I love gathering information and then sharing it out. I’m getting a lot of fulfilment from reading immigration law and distilling it into useable forms for YWAMers, as well as answering questions and doing training for visa people on the various teams. It’s a big motivation to know I’m serving the whole so that we can all have foreign staff. I’m passionate about finding relational, Biblical, YWAM-ways for us all to meet the legal paperwork requirements. Bob sees himself as a behind-the-scenes servant, and loves doing certain jobs so others don’t have to, which in turn releases them to perform their true calling. In YWAM that often means doing administrative and DIY jobs.

Devotional

“But if you are led by the Spirit, you are not under the law…the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, selfcontrol.” Galatians 5:18, 22, 23a. A lot of us may know these verses well, even be able to list off the fruits from memory. And we ask for God’s Spirit to help us to bear these fruits. We rely on the Spirit to lead us and teach us to be kind, patient, gentle, and ask for God’s ‘peace that surpasses all understanding’ (Phil 4: 7). But do we ask the Holy Spirit to lead us when it comes to self-control? The word ‘self’ here could imply that we need to rely on ourselves for this. I know that for me I have had to constantly remind myself to have self-control, and have been in situations where I have regretted not having selfcontrol or have thanked myself for having it!

In the situations when we need self-control, whether it be in relationships or perhaps issues with money or food or emotions, do we listen to the Spirit’s guiding or do we rely on our own selfwill? In a society that is built on both self-reliance and going with what we feel, how can we rely on ourselves to have the self-control we need to be obedient to God’s standard and what He asks of us? There is a passage in 1 Kings 19 which talks about God speaking to Elijah. It says there was a strong wind, an earthquake, a fire, but God wasn’t in any of these. But when a gentle whisper came, Elijah knew that was the Lord. I must admit there are many times the Lord speaks to me in a gentle whisper to encourage me to exercise self-control… but how often do I pay attention? Perhaps that small voice in the back of our head begging us to engage with God’s wisdom is the Spirit trying to teach us self-control.

Not by power or by might but by my spirit… Rossie Henderson-Begg

Over 400 individuals have participated in a YWAM school in the last year responding to the ‘great commission’ to go into the nations.
