reetings! Advance has come again to your letterbox, full of stories and encouragements about what God is doing around the UK and beyond.
We really love producing this news magazine as it enables us to gather fresh stories and to be reminded that it is a wonderful time to be alive and to be a follower of Jesus. Even though it is wonderful, it is also a little scary to witness all the change that is going on in the world. Wars, rumours of wars, economic fears as well as anti-Christian sentiment prevails in even the smallest areas of society. So how do you keep your eyes on Jesus and retain a biblical hope in the future? I have been pondering recently on the analogy of kaleidoscopes! Bear with me, it will make sense I promise! Can you remember that brightly coloured telescope shaped toy you once had as a child? It doesn’t look like much until you put it to your eye, but then at once, an explosion of colour and complexity bombards your senses. It is beautiful, mesmerising, full of pattern and yet somewhat chaotic. As you twist it, new patterns emerge as the light shines through. Endless options and endless opportunities come into focus as the light continues to shine.
I think the Kingdom of God is a little bit like this, a kaleidoscope of colour, beauty, order and chaos. God only needs the tiniest amount of light to shine on a situation and new possibilities can emerge. If we only trust Him He can turn the most challenging of situations into something full of life and full of hope. As we learn to abide in Him ‘we can do all things through Him who strengthen us.’ I think the challenge here is to learn to look at life through God’s kaleidoscope, through His way of seeing the world. Where there is death and no sense of hope, He sees colour, pattern, endless possibility and creativity. I think He wants to outwork this with us and through us. We need to have (Godly) kaleidoscope eyes of hope and beauty. YWAM seeks to train people to view the world in this way. In this edition we will be exploring our discipleship courses YWAM is packaging for the Church, young people pioneering in Croatia, street evangelism in Cambridge and amazing things happening in India. No matter what the future looks like, God is always full of hope and belief in His people. He knows that His Kingdom will prevail and so all we have to do is trust him and look at life around us with new eyes……. May God bless you as you read these stories.

First, we needed people to be able to create learning communities of friends on mission together.
So what is the irreducible minimum to see sustainable mission? Here it is in 14 words.

E
verything changed for us when we realised that Mission was not just an action of the Church but was a part of the character of God. Mission is less about a change of location and more about the change of our heart; to have the heart of God is to have a heart postured for mission - His mission. This begs for a new framework that every believer can be a part of. And we feel it’s YWAM’s role to step up and help make that happen for all believers. Every mission movement has had two elements to remain sustainable: community and teaching. Where those two happened, mission was always sustainable. In this digital age, spreading the idea of community further and bring teaching deeper is possible thus enabling a larger mission movement than ever before. YWAM has created one of the best frameworks in the world for career missionaries. It has a framework that sits on a foundation made up of 18 values that keep us innovative, global, young and flexible. While this framework works well for career missionaries, what about all those who feel called to be missionaries in their different careers or as we call them ‘Lifestyle Missionaries’ In order to facilitate this, we’ve been developing The Tribe!
Secondly we needed to fuel these communal fires of mission happening in homes, coffee shops, staffrooms etc. We designed a mobile app that can be downloaded into any phone and will carry the seed for anyone to start a community of lifestyle missionaries. When Jesus sent out the disciples, he teamed them up, told them to pack light and instructed them to focus on building deep relationships wherever they went. But for some reason in some cases our attempt to improve on the calling of Jesus we started chasing the next ‘Big Thing’ and lost sight of that original plan. We put programmes above relationships, the multitude above the ‘one anothers’ and we somehow choked the adventure out of following Jesus. So maybe its time to get back to the heart of the kingdom where small is better than big, together is better than alone, collaboration replaces competition and everyone is moving at the speed of love. In March 2013, we moved to Croatia to help re-pioneer a YWAM work in the country. But our journey began much earlier. Our time on the Next Wave, 2006-08, was such a rich and valuable experience. Apart from being the place where we met, it was an incredible environment for growth and leadership development. In the two years on board, we were able to see how sailing is a great tool for discipleship and evangelism. We then spent two years at Holmsted Manor, where, using small boats off the coast of Brighton, we were able to run the sailing DTS. We knew we wanted to continue to work with boats, but where? We heard about the Croatian coastline and its many inhabited islands. It was also one of three countries in Central Europe with no YWAM presence. God began stirring something in our hearts and we had to go visit. That was almost two years ago. Then last March, we packed up our car, and made our way across Europe to Croatia. This year has been an adventure! We have helped teach English, start a house church, learn some language, build relationships, host three outreach teams, and run seminars for locals.
We made friends with a local Catholic priest, who opened up his Cathedral for us to run a Biblical Worldview Seminar. At the end, the priest stood to thank us saying, “We are Catholic and Protestant in this room, and we are one in Christ.” For anyone who knows this part of the world, that statement is huge! God is opening doors for us into the Catholic Church. That seminar took place on one of the 180 inhabited islands (there are over 1000 in total), and our hope is to use sailing to take outreach teams to the islands, bringing the hope of Jesus. Just two weeks ago a family who had been with YWAM in Hawaii and Central Asia joined us and another couple are coming in June. We feel so excited for all that God is doing. Our hope is to run a sailing DTS next spring, and we are currently praying about buying a boat. God is reminding us, ‘Don’t lose that adventurous spirit I created in you, and don’t ever get so comfortable that you won’t take a crazy step of faith for me!’ We miss our YWAM England family but Central Europe has embraced us, and God has amazing plans for this region of the world.

Have you or your church got a vision and don’t know how to get there? Do you want more purpose in life? Jesus commands us to ‘Go and make disciples of all nations!’ yet many of us get stuck on ‘how do we really make disciples?’ It is our goal in YWAM, through our training programmes, to disciple nations; to help people who are engaged in all facets of society from every nation to follow Jesus wholeheartedly. Sadly, not everyone can take 6 months away from their responsibilities to do a DTS. Discipleship Training Courses (DTC’s) are not a new thing for YWAM, yet we have seen growing interest recently. Many of us are looking for more, eager to grow in our spiritual lives, develop our relationship with the Godhead and reach out to our neighbours. Sarah*, a recent attendee of a DTC in St Albans tells of such a transformation, ‘I certainly feel spiritually much more alive and aware!’ Running DTC’s in the local church context has helped many churches and individuals ask questions in an informal and interactive atmosphere, like: what is God asking us to do in our community? Where is our church going and how can we shift our direction and focus? What is God’s purpose for me?

Each DTC carries the same principles and values, but looks different very time, tailored for each church or community context so that the most can be gained. It gives you a chance to look afresh at what it means to follow Jesus, and make a difference. ‘God was waiting to meet me in powerful, intimate new ways’ describes Stephen*’s experience when he went through a DTC in Reading. When we take time to get to know God more, however we do that, He always meets us. Taryn, from YWAM Reading, observed ‘People are able to grow in their experience of God and are transformed. It also gives opportunity to be exposed to some of the DTS curriculum.’ “I have learned God’s purpose and plan for His healing & restoration in my life; I am blessed to be a blessing to others.” Our desire is to enable individuals, churches and communities to deepen their relationship with God so that they can have a greater impact on the society and environment around them.

The wide variety of topics, including hearing God’s voice, Holy Spirit, the Nature & Character of God, Spiritual Warfare, Abrahamic covenant and evangelism, challenges and broadens our personal relationship with God as well as our outlook on life and the world. Having a small group element to every session allows for discussion and application of what has been taught, grounding the topics into our own lives and context. YWAM England have recently produced a DVD full of excellent teaching so that you can have a flavour of what it might be to run a DTC in your local church / area. YWAM ‘The Bridge’ Luton run a 4 week full time intensive DTC aimed at Arabic Christians. Ashraf, from YWAM Luton, commented, ‘We are providing a course that suits them rather than what suits us. Our aim is to reach many, to equip and facilitate spiritual growth. This way, integration back into work is easier.’ Jacob* explained, ‘I wanted to do a YWAM course, but I couldn’t afford the time or cost of a DTS – this I can do.’ The King’s Lodge will also be running an Arabic / English DTC in July.

God spoke to us several years ago through the practice of Hudson Taylor. He was asked, “How do you recruit people for missions?” He responded, “We don’t, but we do two things. We pray the Lord of harvest to send out labourers into the harvest field, and secondly, we work for the spiritual health of local churches.” We have discovered that spiritually healthy churches and individuals will rise up and play their part in evangelism and missions; serving churches aids them in reaching out.

During the gathering we had extended times of prayer and worship. YWAM Lyon’s leaders Laurence and Lucas Munoz shared their passion for street art and evangelism. (Check them out at www. jem-lyon.com.) One of YWAM’s founding fathers Lynn Green challenged us to dream bigger dreams and see another major wave of YWAM missionaries released. Following this theme, Carl Tinnion spoke about the need to embrace the chaos of growth and increased fruitfulness. The Central European attendees often come from very different situations from those in Western Europe. In our Western region we have large bases with scores of staff. In Central Europe there are often entire nations with only a handful of staff, sometimes just individuals or couples courageously working away to bring transformation to their nation. Therefore, a theme for our last two gatherings has been to encourage our work in Central Europe

and to see an acceleration of teams and outreach into nations such as Albania, Bosnia, Serbia, Romania and the Czech Republic. When organising one of these events we always need to make a choice. Do we go for a rural retreat centre, perfect for conferences but far away from cities, or do we go for a downtown feel in the heart of a city we are working in, but with the headaches of finding accommodation, meeting space, and eating space for 250+ people? With this gathering we went for the city centre option. This created a conference environment where we were walking for 30 minutes at a time from hostel to main venue and from there to our lunch, dinner and afternoon workshop space, and back again to the main venue for the evening meeting. Sure, this was a bit of a hassle, but it also meant that at the end of four days, over a hundred YWAMers had each given out at least two Gospels of Luke each to random people we met. We also walked several miles around a beautiful, modern European city, just like one of the two dozen in which we hope to pioneer new teams in the coming few years. The city itself became one of the most memorable aspects of the gathering, a living visual aid. Jonny Clark

WELG|Leadership Gathering 8

he historic city of Lyon, home to one of YWAM’s most creative urban teams, was the host city for our bi-annual Western European Leadership Gathering last month. This year we had over 250 participants, and also included a number of YWAMers from Central Europe. The WELG is designed to be an environment where a tangible sense of “family” is felt while simultaneously providing momentum for new urban engagement by our missionary teams throughout Europe.

The team went into the village, two by two; sat with the local women; drank chai; talked about their faith, invited them to events and taught their children songs and stories. They held a love feast at the church - inviting the entire village. The team lived as part of that church getting excited about what they were excited about, embracing them into their lives as friends and family.
In 2012, thoughts began to stir about returning to YWAM and after seeking God, she returned to Holmsted Manor in January 2013, staffed a DTS and went on outreach to India. A year on, Laura noticed that the changes in Holmsted Manor were as vast as those that she saw in the church in Chennai; Holmsted Manor is training and sending out teams across the globe, reaching out to ministries in the local area, working with local youth groups and evangelising on the streets in Brighton. “Laura is grateful that Holmsted Manor is on a journey with a dynamic God and continues to believe Him for more of the anointing that brings growth and transformation in the YWAM community, life in rural England, Brighton, India and beyond.” Joanna Bishop and Laura Piekos
After the life-changing experience of DTS, God had spoken clearly to Laura about going into teaching. Though keen to stay at Holmsted Manor with YWAM and press into what God was doing there –she knew the importance (through a teaching on hearing God’s voice) of being obedient so began teaching English in a secondary school. In the summer of 2011 Laura returned to the church she had visited in Chennai. What a difference! The church had set up a weekly youth Bible study group, a local gym to outreach to young men, and they employed a children’s worker. The church reached out to their village and also smaller rural villages nearby. Laura was thrilled to see so much positive change.

olmsted Manor has a rich heritage of sending Discipleship Training School (DTS) teams all over the world. In September 2008, Laura Piekos went with a team, fresh-faced and enthusiastic, from the peaceful English countryside into the colourful noise of an Indian city. The church they partnered with was in a large rural village, on the outskirts of Chennai; made up of only 10 people, mainly family, but the pastor was keen to see more happen!

We joined Mercy Ships in 1995 and then moved to YWAM Harpenden. We are now in Lanner near Redruth, Cornwall, where Julia grew up. We have two fantastic daughters, Hannah (15) and Abi (12) and we are the carers for Julia’s father, John. We want to be a catalyst for prayer, mission and discipleship in Cornwall. We do this through connections; serving, building relationships with churches and other organisations; facilitating outreach teams and hospitality. Already, DTS outreach teams have served churches; alongside local missions and shared their faith. We helped with the Scripture Union beach mission, took 20 teenagers to Soul Survivor and are supporting youth groups.

John Wesley brought revival here. There is beautiful coastline but also areas of great poverty. It is great to be part of Hope Cornwall 2014 - to raise up young people into a lifestyle of mission and see 60 young people involved in mission in the towns of west Cornwall. It was the first full day of the DTS, and after two hours praying and worshipping (these two hours have been the centre of our daily rhythm) I was giving our new trainees a simple tour of Cambridge. I came to the popular buskers’ pitch outside Holy Trinity Church: ‘So we might try and do some streetpreaching here…’ ‘—Show us!’ interrupted one of the trainees. And so I switched from talking about Cambridge in conversational tones to proclaiming the simple love of Jesus - and watched as by-passers began adding themselves to our little crowd. Some asked questions and we found ourselves talking with a few university students, who promised that they would go home and begin reading a gospel! Realising that this was the beginning of the breakthrough in street evangelism we had been praying our DTS would experience, the next afternoon (after our 1-3pm prayer time) we gave the trainees a little bit of simple training with the multicoloured gospel bracelet and sent them out to tell whoever they could about Jesus. Lukas, one of our trainees, had been trying to share the gospel with someone else, when “suddenly this guy comes up behind me and says—‘Tell me that story! … Tell me this colour and that colour…’ And I asked him, would you like to be sure that you can be clean from your sins and have Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, he said ‘Yeah’ and we prayed a simple prayer and he started smiling—he’d had a moment of enlightenment!” The following weekend, Akira and Hannah (trainees), met a Chinese girl: “She had arrived as student from China on the Monday. We shared the gospel bracelet with her. She took it and said she wanted to find out more. She prayed there on the street, and she said she could feel the love of God inside of her. She was overwhelmed by it and joined us at the celebration at the church afterwards”.
In total during our DTS lecture phase we saw about one hundred and fifty responses to the simple Gospel message—truly it is “the power of God to all who believe”. Peter Prescott GREEN bead represents creation we’re made to know the love of God; BLACK represents sin the reason we don’t experience that love; RED is love - demonstrated through the blood of Christ which cleanses us from sin; WHITE is forgiveness God’s free gift to all who trust in Jesus; BLUE is the Holy Spirit by whom we can be born again; YELLOW is heaven of which we can have perfect assurance.

Psalm 27 4 & 8 This, as well as the word ‘fascination’ displayed prominently, was the focal scripture on my DTS in Maui, Hawaii in 2005.

Nine years on and I am still fascinated with God. Currently, I am desiring greater revelation and understanding of what it means to be a child adopted into His family, to be a beloved daughter, to be an heir of God and a co-heir with Christ. I am realising increasingly that God’s desire is for us to be family; for our identity to be as sons and daughters, not servants. Our Father is the Creator of heaven and earth - we really are invited to join with Him in the family business.

Thank God for opportunities to bring His Kingdom in the workplace, perhaps your own environment and people you know. Pray for those involved in The Tribe and DTC’s to know how to effectively support and encourage ‘Lifestyle Missionaries’. Thank God for all that He is doing in Croatia, and the opportunities open to Jarod and Becs. Please pray for their new team members to settle in quickly; for guidance and further open opportunities as they continue to be adventurous. Thank God for all of YWAM’s activities in Western and Central Europe. Pray that we would embrace all that God has for us, even in the midst of apparent chaos and continue to dream big dreams with God.
Thank God for YWAM partnership throughout the world, such as Holmsted Manor with Chennai, India. Pray for continued strengthening in those partnerships and wisdom for how to be a real blessing on both sides.
Thank God for our evangelism focussed YWAMers, particularly those in YWAM Cambridge. Pray that as they have conversations, people would be ready and open to hear the gospel and have continued contact.
