Dear Friends, “Unprecedented” is a term that’s frequently used to describe 2020. We have used it reflexively ourselves because the pandemic was a once-in-a-century event. But the injustice revealed by the pandemic – from disparities in health care, gender and racial inequities, income inequality, to the unabated murders of Black Americans by police – was not new. There was simply more light being shone on what already existed. This past year also shone a light on the value of our mission and the continued need for the work of YWCA Evanston/North Shore. Rates of domestic violence skyrocketed with stay-athome orders, which increased the need for counseling, housing, and legal advocacy on behalf of survivors. The demand for equity workshops, training, and consulting doubled with the focus on racial injustice, and the need for job training and counseling increased sharply as many lost their jobs and sources of income. 2020 was a whirlwind of change at YWCA Evanston/ North Shore and the whirlwind continues. We
have been pushed to learn rapidly how to deliver programming differently, and that has helped us to reach more people. That will continue. You’ll note that the financials in our annual report reflect our fiscal year, which ended in June of 2020. Our narrative is the greater story of 2020, and how, with your steadfast support, we adapted and grew as an organization. This year has been jarring for us all, but the silver lining is that we’re in a stronger position now to serve our community in the years ahead. We learned how to adapt and build resilience in ourselves and the people we serve. Together, we have grown, learned, and forged ahead. Building hope for survivors Domestic Violence Program
Every upheaval we experienced in 2020 disproportionately impacted those with the fewest resources and options, not the least of which are survivors of domestic violence. And we know that for survivors, home is often not a safe place to retreat to.
IN THE MIDST OF THE PANDEMIC, SAFETY FOR SURVIVORS WAS OUR TOP PRIORITY.
The pandemic provided tremendous challenges for our domestic violence program. Working to overcome those challenges and adapt to a constantly changing environment helped us learn new ways of delivering services, led to strengthened community partnerships, and showed us how resilient we are. Here are some highlights: l Because it was a congregate living facility, our shelter was not safe for residents and shelter staff. We quickly moved all residents into efficiency suites at local hotels, and made sure they had the essentials they needed to isolate safely. l We provided laptops to survivors so that they and their children could access counseling sessions and remote learning virtually. l In partnership with Connections for the Homeless, and thanks to a grant from Evanston Community Foundation, we were able to place five domestic violence survivors into apartments of their own. l Despite closures at Skokie Courthouse, our legal advocates worked diligently to ensure that clients could attend remote hearings and receive the services they needed. l Our 40-hour Domestic Violence Training, which provides professional training for those supporting survivors in Illinois was offered virtually twice in 2020.

OUR DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROGRAM STAFF (LEFT) WORKED WITH SURVIVORS WHO WERE QUARANTINED WITH THEIR ABUSERS, PROVIDING 1,805 HOURS OF VIRTUAL COUNSELING IN 2020.
l Building Healthy Relationships, our violence prevention curriculum for young people, continued virtually at four schools. l We launched a new virtual Peer Educator program to give middle-school students the tools they need to become anti-violence leaders and models for their classmates. In 2021, we look forward to opening our new Family Support Center, which will double our capacity and will be one of the first domestic violence shelters in the nation whose design is informed by recognized principles of trauma-informed care. And with private rooms,
it will also mitigate the need to move anyone should another pandemic occur.

Building knowlege, skills, and independence Women’s Economic Advancement Program
Job skills and financial education help women escape cycles of poverty and violence and weather crises like the pandemic.
WOMEN, AND ESPECIALLY WOMEN OF COLOR, HAVE LOST MORE JOBS DUING THE PANDEMIC THAN ANY OTHER GROUP
In 2020, our economic empowerment programs were more important than ever as women lost jobs and economic security. We quickly adapted to serve these women virtually. Learning to deliver a single class virtually made a difference. Learning to deliver an entire workforce training program virtually significantly increased our impact, helping us reach more people than ever before. In 2020: l We held six virtual Financial Education Workshops, helping 52 women learn about the basics of investing and planning for the future. l We held eight Basic Money Management classes, training 62 participants about budgeting, credit, and the dangers of predatory lending, a 60% increase from the prior year. l In December, we applauded as nine women graduated from YW Culinary, our food service workforce training program, which was conducted virtually during the pandemic.

OUR NEW “WOMEN IN TECH” COUNCIL SERVES AS ADVISORS TO PARTICIPANTS IN OUR YWEB CAREER ACADEMY PROGRAM.
l A grant from Google helped us launch YWeb Career Academy, which will provide digital skills to women of color and women in vulnerable populations, including survivors of domestic violence and lowwage workers. Virtual classrooms helped us continue to deliver programming throughout the pandemic. We now imagine a future in which we are able to offer financial education, coaching, and workforce training both virtually and in-person, reaching more women and deepening our impact.

Building racial and gender equity Equity Institute
YWCA’s commitment to racial and gender justice and civil rights is longstanding and unwavering.
RACISM HAS NO PLACE IN THE AMERICA WE ALL DESERVE.
The events of the past year pushed many people to reckon with the reality of racism. That accelerated the demand for our Equity Institute programming. At the same time, the restrictions of the pandemic forced us to quickly find new ways of delivering our work. Last year: l 453 people from eight states across the country attended our first virtual Equity Summit. This represents a 125 percent increase in attendance from our 2019 event. l 258 people participated in a Racial Equity Workshop, a 700% increase in the months since the pandemic started. l Our Equity Institute was called upon frequently by local companies and institutions as society yearned for change. Contracted consulting work of the Equity Institute expanded by 58 percent last year. l While we couldn’t gather to Stand Against Racism or Race Against Hate, we invited the public to participate virtually – and they responded! In April, local residents created antiracism signs and recited the pledge against racism, posting photos and videos to social media. In June, hundreds raced or walked against hate on their own, sporting Race Against Hate t-shirts from years past. Many shared their supportive, anti-racist messages on social media.

YWCA Evanston/North Shore’s ongoing racial justice work has created space for all of us to hold difficult – but essential – conversations on race and injustice. The need for this work has increased and will continue to grow in the months and years ahead. Our campus expansion will be valuable to this effort, providing us with more space to convene and consult and build a more equitable future.

Building equity, confidence, and water safety Flying Fish Aquatics
What makes our aquatics program so special? We are mission-driven and community-minded.
OUR SWIMMERS, LIKE THE REST OF US, LEARNED TO ADAPT AND ADJUST TO NEW PUBLIC HEALTH RESTRICTIONS. WE ARE GRATEFUL THAT THE FAMILIES WE SERVE WERE UNDERSTANDING, FLEXIBLE, AND SUPPORTIVE.
During 2020, our Flying Fish aquatics programs responded quickly to everchanging state regulations to mitigate the spread of the virus. It was not easy for the young people and families we serve to be shut off from swim school and swim team for many months, but it was necessary during this public health crisis. l As Covid-19 restrictions eased in the summer, we continually worked toward compromise situations that allowed for programs with modifications, including swim instruction and swim team. l In late November, the state strengthened its restrictions and, once again, we adapted, providing the community with as many opportunities for swimming as possible while still adhering to tighter restrictions. l Despite limitations on being together, throughout 2020, the Flying Fish community remained tightly knit and focused on others. In May, swim team members held a “virtual” Oz Relay, running, walking or cycling on their own to honor the late Oswald Roper, a longtime coach and swim instructor. In the fall, this same group – along with many others – participated in the actual Oz Relay and raised $15,000 to support swim scholarships.

SWIMMERS PARTICIPATING IN THE 24-HOUR OZ RELAY RAISED $15,000 TO SUPPORT OUR AQUATICS PROGRAMS, INCLUDING SCHOLARSHIPS FOR YOUNG SWIMMERS.
While it was difficult to shut down intermittently and offer limited programs due to state restrictions, the aquatics staff worked to make the best of a challenging situation. We only wish we could have opened our doors even wider. The Flying Fish aquatics program has long been a symbol of the principles of equity, inclusion, and empowerment that have guided YWCA Evanston/ North Shore for almost 90 years. As we move into 2021, we will continue to serve the community as best we can, providing access and opportunity in our pools, no matter the circumstances.

Always building More equitable communities
As we look to the future, we’re constantly thinking about how we can reach more people with our services, engage more people in our programs and classes, and encourage more people to take action to build racial and gender equity.
OUR EXPANDED CAMPUS AND NEW FAMILY SUPPORT CENTER WILL BE COMPLETED IN 2021.
Since 1931, YWCA Evanston/North Shore has been a force for social justice in northeastern Chicagoland. Empowering women and eliminating racism is our mission and the heart of what we do. With a strong record of community impact and a steady pace of growth, we are now working to expand our reach and do more for our communities. l In late 2019, we started a campus expansion project, which features a new family support center, an expanded shelter, new tech-enhanced classrooms and a renovated aquatics center. This project, accelerated because we vacated the building in March, is now due to be completed in summer of 2021. Our campus renovations will set the stage for decades to come as our work continues to grow and expand. l In August 2020, we acquired the Crowded Closet, a women’s consignment shop in Evanston whose net proceeds help fund our domestic violence and women’s empowerment programs. YWCA Crowded Closet joins sister enterprise YWCA

Shop for Good, a women’s resale boutique in Wilmette, which we acquired in 2018. The shared knowledge and single online presence of our two shops create synergy, and engage volunteers and the community, expanding our mission and visibility in the area.
