Dear Friends, With your steadfast support, YWCA Evanston/North Shore has deepened its impact as a force for social justice and a champion of women and families in northeastern Cook County. In the last decade alone, we have launched or expanded 14 impact areas to further our mission to eliminate racism and empower women, and we have served nearly 40 percent more people. In the past year, we introduced three new programs: • YW Culinary, a food service workforce training program for low- to moderate-income women; • Savings for Success, which helps families save for their children’s postsecondary education; and • Men in the Making, which is designed to help adolescent males grow into the non-violent adults they want to be. In order to continue to do more and be more for the 16 communities we serve, last year we began planning for an exciting new expansion of our campus. We are thrilled to share with you that we will break ground this spring! While our expansion is seemingly about blueprints, bricks, and mortar, it’s really about creating effective, lasting change. For example, our new space will give us more capacity to serve women and families experiencing domestic violence. Last year, we provided 172 domestic violence survivors and their children with emergency shelter. But we could not accept hundreds more who needed help. Our new facilities will double the current capacity of our emergency shelter with accommodations that are particularly conducive to those who have experienced trauma. From our Equity Institute, to our new domestic violence training program for salon professionals, to the YWCA Shop for Good, to group swim lessons for adults, we are growing and forging ahead at a fast pace. But we couldn’t do it without all of you who believe so passionately in the work of YWCA Evanston/North Shore. Since 1985, YWCA Evanston/North Shore has provided safety and resources for domestic violence survivors and their families. Because of your support, we are able to provide an environment that is safe and welcoming and meets survivors where they are on their journeys. We help them access economic resources and legal protections, and we offer support and counseling that strengthens their ability to address the many complex issues they face as they recover from trauma and rebuild their lives. We also continue to address domestic violence from multiple angles, from training salon professionals to working with young people on violence prevention.

I gave a presentation about domestic abuse to a business group and about four years later, a woman who had been at that presentation arrived at the YWCA seeking help. She had kept my business card wadded up in her purse and she told me that it had taken her this long to muster the courage. She said she was finally ready to deal with her abuse.”

As of January 2019, Illinois law requires all salon professionals to be trained on sexual assault and domestic violence. In 2019, we trained 604 salon professionals to recognize

the signs and symptoms of abuse in their clients and co-workers and discretely refer them to supportive services.

We are stepping up our efforts to partner with law enforcement, legislators, and health and safety officials to make sure current gun laws are implemented, loopholes are closed, and those who deal with domestic violence situations receive the education and training they need to ensure the safety of victims and bystanders.”

YOU ARE ADDRESSING THE ROOTS OF VIOLENT BEHAVIOR... “We talk to hundreds of middle school and high school students every year. Sometimes our discussions are direct: What are the warning signs a dating partner is abusive? How can you support a friend in an abusive relationship? But our goal isn’t just to give them checklists of do’s and don’ts. We aim to form relationships with students and have conversations that contribute to an entire culture shift.”

violence preventation education at all levels, enlisting men as allies, working to change the behavior of abusers, and advocacy to promote the safety of survivors and hold abusers accountable.

...AND REACHING YOUNG PEOPLE WITH CREATIVITY AND COMPASSION “We gave the guys paper masks and asked them to write the traits they think they have to have as men. They said things like ‘aggressiveness,’ ‘women,’ ‘a lot of money.’ Some even put gang signs on their masks. On the inside of the masks, we asked them to write the things they feel they have to hide. They wrote stuff like ‘I like to cook,’ ‘my parents are divorced,’ I’m afraid of the future.’ The mask exercise was emotional and it had a domino effect. The more we all showed our vulnerability, the more vulnerable everyone else became.”

What makes our aquatics program so special? We are mission-driven and committed to the ideal that every child – and adult – should learn to swim and have opportunities to grow from the sport. Our swim instructors and coaches are professionals and many of them have been with us for decades. They employ methods that treat people as individuals. They also work to foster relationships that build community, not only among swimmers, but among their families, too. Flying Fish Aquatics partners with local organizations to ensure that as many young people as possible have opportunities to learn the lifesaving skill of swimming. In 2019 our community partnerships and outreach opened our pools to more than 500 children who may not otherwise have had access to instruction. These partnerships include: • Evanston Swims! (We are the leader in this partnership that provides free swim instruction to second graders in Evanston/Skokie School District 65.) • Books & Breakfast • Erie Family Health (Evanston/Skokie) • Family Focus • Learning Bridge • Kingsway Preparatory School • Roycemore School

"Drowning remains a leading cause of death for children nationwide and one survey from a few years ago showed that fewer than 20 percent of Evanston first graders were proficient swimmers. Evanston Swims! is changing these numbers and making our children safer, which is particularly important in a lakefront community like ours.”

“I would see kids who needed more physical activity and opportunities for exercise, but they couldn’t afford it. So I began writing ‘prescriptions’ for swimming and sending families to the Flying Fish. They honored those prescriptions with free or reduced lessons and the kids got engaged in swimming. Several pediatricians and I have sent hundreds of kids to the YWCA, and we’ve seen it make a huge difference in their lives.”

Race and gender should not predetermine an individual’s destiny. Equity work levels the playing field so we all have access to the same opportunities and resources to build more stable futures. Our Equity Institute promotes racial and gender equity at the interpersonal, institutional, and systems levels by partnering with individuals and institutions through training and education, community engagement programs, and annual events. We work to shift minds, hearts, and laws so that everyone has an equitable opportunity to flourish. raising funds for our domestic violence services and economic advancement programs;

providing women with low cost, high quality clothing, particularly important for those newly entering or re-entering the workforce;
•
extending awareness of YWCA’s work not only to customer and clothing donors, but by serving as a locale for special events related to YWCA’s mission; and
•
engaging volunteers.
