YWCA Evanston/North Shore is a non-profit social justice organization dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. We work to stand up for social justice and strengthen local communities, and serve more than 8,000 people annually in northern Cook County through our Freedom from Violence, Equity Institute, Economic Advancement, and Flying Fish Aquatics for All programs. Established in 1931, we are a member of one of the oldest and largest multicultural women’s organizations in the world. Across the globe, there are more than 25 million YWCA members in 106 countries and participants in over 250 local YWCA associations in the United States.

Dear Friends, Improving the lives of girls and women is at the heart of everything we do at YWCA Evanston/North Shore, with the understanding that it has a farreaching impact on their lives, their families and communities, and society as a whole. It centers and allows us to focus on the continually evolving programs and services that meet the changing needs of the communities we serve. Our mission is clear: eliminating racism, empowering women, and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all. Leading one of the oldest and largest multicultural women's organizations, whose local roots stretch back to the 1930s, has its challenges. It takes an unwavering commitment from compassionate staff, volunteers, advisors, partners, and donors who fully understand our mission and the importance of our gender and racial equity work. Because of your support, we can provide: safety, shelter, and counseling support for our domestic violence survivors; job training that leads to familysustaining employment; water safety skills regardless of race, income, or zip code; trainings and solutions that address systemic barriers to access and opportunity. These are all the ways we leverage the talents and resources of our supporters and build safer and more just futures for all women and girls and, ultimately, society. The FY2023 Annual Impact Report highlights how we execute our mission and vision for the organization, even through the most challenging times, and stories of impact from our clients, partners, and community members. It reminds us that change does not happen overnight. Change is molded by people who refuse to give up or turn a blind eye to the most pressing issues and problems.
As we learn from our experiences and turn our challenges into triumphs, we will grow together and give everyone a fighting chance at the life they want and deserve. We are delighted to see our programs' expansion, increased individuals served, and needs met due to your advocacy and support throughout the year. Freedom from Violence DOMESTIC VIOLENCE PROGRAM
YWCA’s comprehensive programming addresses domestic violence by providing support for survivors, their children, and those who cause harm. We also provide education and violence prevention training in the community to help address the causes of violence and not just the response.
564 survivors and their children received shelter and supportive services to begin their journey to safety and stability
FY23 Highlights Include: Housing, Counseling, and Advocacy Services 97 adults and 40 children were residents at Mary Lou’s Place, with an average stay of 90 nights. With our new shelter, we have more than doubled our previous capacity and extended the average length of stay for survivors, giving them additional time and support to determine the next steps on their path to healing. We responded to almost 900 calls to our emergency 24-hour toll-free Crisis Line. 87 adults and 17 children received supportive services from our domestic violence team as part of our non-residential community counseling program. 16 families had space to rebuild their lives at Bridges, our longer-term housing for survivors. 71% of the 250 Orders of Protection filed with the support of our Legal Advocacy team were issued, helping survivors navigate the complex legal system and find protection from their abusers.

Violence Prevention Training and Education We delivered 4 in-person ICDVP-approved 40-hour Domestic Violence Trainings that gave 71 participants skills for working with individuals affected by domestic violence using a trauma-informed lens. Alternatives to Violence, our 26-week learning and education group for those who have caused harm, had 14 participants. We addressed breaking the cycle of abuse at an early age through our Building Healthy Relationships violence prevention curriculum for young people with over 170 5th-12th graders, and 4 sessions of our Youth Leadership Program that helped 31 students aged 1418 build healthy identities and become advocates in their communities. We continued the growth of our Comprehensive Sex Education program with the delivery of 11 trainings for over 200 sex education teachers. 18 community advocates were trained through 2 cohorts of our Promotores Immigrant Empowerment Program for Spanish-speaking and non-U.S born survivors or those affected by domestic violence to learn about and share available resources.

Expanding Pathways to Financial Independence Job skills and financial wellness education help build economic stability and independence. Our programs help make our communities places in which women and girls can thrive as they become empowered, confident and competent through education, training, and engagement.
FY23 Highlights Include:

Financial Wellness We held 16 Basic Money Management classes for the public, community partners, and YW programs including Promotores and Youth Leadership, educating over 200 participants about budgeting, credit, and the dangers of predatory lending. 16 Building My Finances education workshops for domestic violence survivors covered the following topics: Understanding Financial Abuse, Learning Financial Fundamentals, Mastering Credit Basics, Building Financial Foundations, and Long-Term Planning. Financial and career coaching was provided to over 500 individuals through our free weekly drop-in Financial Empowerment Center, personal coaching for DV survivors, and public education and outreach events. We continued the expansion of our Savings for Success child savings account program offered in partnership with Evanston Community Foundation that incentivizes families to save for their children’s future education and training through matching and education opportunities. Over 35 kindergarten families enrolled at Walker and Oakton Elementary schools, and planning was completed to offer the program to all District 65 kindergarten families in FY24.

Workforce Development Our YW Culinary program completed 3 cohorts, offering 10 students hands-on experience in our Mary Lou’s Place commercial kitchen, working alongside our chef to learn culinary skills and serve healthy, professionally prepared meals to our domestic violence shelter residents. 90% of YW Culinary participants received their ServSafe Food Handler’s Certificate, and 50% received their ServSafe Manager’s Certificate.

YW Tech Lab, our free 4-month online web development program, had 2 cohorts with 34 students improving the trajectory of their careers and their earning potential. Within 12 months of completing the program, 22 received IT jobs or internships. YW Tech Lab students also benefited from the expertise and networking advice of the members of our Women in Tech Council, who represent organizations such as Google, Kraft-Heinz, Exelon, and Northwestern University. 12 former YW Tech Lab students joined our Portfolio Group to create websites for minority business owners in Evanston, guided by our partners at Northwestern. The group created websites for The Aux and Embrace Your Crown full-service hair salon.

THE EQUITY INSTITUTE
YWCA’s commitment to racial justice and gender equity is longstanding and unwavering. We provide robust programming through our equity consulting, public programming, community events, and specialty workshops that allow participants to dive deep and acquire tools for cultivating anti-racist cultures in their organizations and communities.
FY23 Highlights Include:

people from across the Chicagoland area and outside of Illinois participated in Equity Institute programming
Community Engagement and Events Our Racial Healing Week took place in January—a week of events and reflection centered on the work of visionaries and leaders inspired by the National Day of Racial Healing. Close to 300 total attendees participated in our special Let‘s Talk at Lunch program, book discussion, and keynote speaker event with activist, grassroots organizer, and educator Mariame Kaba. In April, close to 4,000 participated in our Unite Again Racism demonstrations and community discussions across Evanston, Skokie, and Wilmette. Local residents, schools, churches, organizations, city departments, and retailers all came together to raise awareness about the impact of institutional and structural racism and build community among those who work for racial justice. The 23rd Annual Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate, the largest racial justice run/walk event in the U.S., took place in June on Father’s Day weekend, and over 3,700 runners, walkers, and volunteers from across the country came out in support of ending hate and violence in our communities. Let's Talk at Lunch, the monthly facilitated series that invites participants to talk about racism and equity welcomed over 40 participants.

Equity Training and Consulting We facilitated two public Racial Equity Workshops for 30 participants, Board Engagement Through an Equity Lens and Somatic Equity Training for Facilitators. Equity Institute's Becoming Equitable Institutions (BEI) contracted consulting work served 17 organizations. Consulting projects included: Equity Assessments, Workshops, Leadership Consulting, Curriculum Design, and Group Facilitation. We continued partnerships with Chicago Public Schools, Northwestern University, and the City of Evanston, all of whom have sought out the expertise of YWCA Evanston/North Shore as they engage in internal equity assessment and planning. We facilitated an Annual Leadership Retreat for the Illinois Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV) as one of our new partners in FY23.

Aquatics for All FLYING FISH AQUATICS PROGRAM
Our aquatics programs are a proud symbol of YWCA's principles of equity, inclusion and empowerment. Between swim team practices, swim lessons, adult classes, and fundraising marathons, the pools can be found bustling with community members of all ages and backgrounds having fun while learning critical life-saving skills.

FY23 Highlights Include: Flying Fish Swim Team, Lessons, and Recreation 523 Swimmers, our highest number since 2019, participated in the Flying Fish Swim Team, participating in year-round competitive meets at YWCA and all over the country. 826 children of all ages learned water safety skills through our Learn to Swim program. 536 community members participated in exciting recreational and learning opportunities, including Summer Aquatics Camps, aqua aerobics, lap swimming, masters, family swim, and the Mary Lou Swim Crew (free swimming for shelter residents).

Events and Engagement The Flying Fish swim team and swim families came together to raise $75,000 for the Swim Marathon in January to support YWCA programs and over $27,000 in May for the Oz Relay, named for beloved YWCA swim coach and instructor Oswald “Oz” Roper, to go towards aquatics scholarships. FY23 saw a 40% increase in the number of scholarships for group lessons compared to the previous year, with 168 swimmers participating in swim team, private, and group lessons with the support of aquatics scholarships. We renewed several of our community partnerships in FY23 that were halted due to the pandemic, with hundreds of participants through area organizations including Evanston Swims, Skokie Montessori School, and Family Focus.

YWCA's Shop for Good women’s resale boutiques, located in Wilmette and Evanston, are one of the many ways we build community and expand our mission. Over 30 dedicated volunteers help support the day-to-day operations of the shops year-round and are an integral part of making the stores a pillar of connection and activism in the community. Shop for Good volunteers and customers learn about our work each time they step inside one of our stores and feel good knowing they are shopping sustainably, that 100% percent of proceeds from the shops benefit our programs and services, and that women in our economic advancement programs and survivors of domestic violence are provided with vouchers to shop at no cost.
FY23 Highlights Include: Over 2,000 bags or boxes of clothes were donated in FY23. 12 organizations organized large donation drives or clothing contributions. We hosted over 10 events at both stores, partnering with organizations like Main Dempster Mile and the Wilmette Chamber of Commerce to welcome the community to learn more about our stores and discover ways to get involved. In May, we teamed up with Evanston Made and Evanston Pour to host a “Get Down for Good” dance party that helped raise funds for YWCA.

I have been honored to serve as Board Chair at YWCA Evanston/North Shore for the past three years. It’s been an exciting and rewarding time to lead this incredible organization. As I transition to the Immediate Past Chair role, I fully appreciate how we’ve all worked together to meet many of the challenges we’ve faced. As Board Chair, I saw the successful completion of our capital campaign and our campus building project - all while we were in the midst of a global pandemic. With hard work and persistence, we transitioned from our long-time CEO to our new CEO - both of whom are amazing women in their own right and I feel grateful to have been able to work alongside them. None of these accomplishments would be possible without the steadfast support of YWCA’s donors, staff, and community partners. Along with Board Service, our family has been a long-time donor to YWCA. As the mother of three daughters, it is important to me that ALL women can feel empowered to be their best selves. Also, as a family of color, we understand the need and importance of working towards eliminating racism. The mission of this organization resonates loudly in our home. When not involved in Board work, you can still find me at the YWCA participating regularly in water aerobics classes with a fabulous instructor. It’s a community of people who value diversity, inclusion, and just getting in the water and having fun!
