We are at a very important and exciting point in the 81-year history of the YWCA Evanston/ North Shore. We have worked hard to strengthen our foundation, diversify our revenue streams, and build a sustainable future which is less dependent on government funding. This has enabled us to expand our mission-based programs and increase the impact we have in the lives of women and families in the communities we serve.

We reached 5% more women and children who are fleeing abuse in their homes. We initiated more opportunities to have conversations about race and racism in order to build more equitable communities. We helped empower 65% more women to take control of their economic well-being so they can stabilize their lives We provided 20% more scholarships to underserved youth so they could learn to be safe in the water and empowered through sport. We have formed many new community partnerships to increase our impact and make Evanston a stronger and more equitable community for all its members. We look forward to building on these collaborations in the coming years. We are growing stronger each year and are able to protect the vital and critical services we offer throughout our service area, despite dwindling government support.

domestic violence services Women who are free from domestic violence can be safe from harm, self-sufficient and empowered to make their own life choices.
g 2,190 crisis line calls were fielded, offering domestic violence victims immediate intervention, support, and referrals. g 236 women and their children received emergency shelter, counseling and supportive services at Mary Lou’s Place. g 135 women living in their homes received community counseling services and assistance in developing safety plans. g 525 clients seeking Orders of Protection received legal assistance and referrals from our court advocates. g 8,870 hours of individual and group counseling, therapy, child care, advocacy and life skills training were provided to assist women and their children in recovering from the abuse in their lives.

The YWCA court advocate helped me get an order of protection and my partner was forced to move. A decade of unhappiness and abuse was lessened substantially, and the quality of my life improved.�
racial justice program Talking about race and recognizing how racism affects all of us, helps us create a stronger, more vibrant and more equitable community.
“Being in a racially mixed room hearing about others’ experiences and examining my own beliefs and actions is very profound. Not only were the realities of today’s racial injustices made more clear to me but it provided me with a comfort level and a vocabulary to talk about racial issues more easily. It’s like I was taught a language I didn’t know.”
g We continued our 4-part racial justice dialogue series, Community Conversations on Race, examining how systemic racism affects the day-to-day life of all who live and work in Evanston, envisioning what racial equity could look like in our city and identifying specific roles individuals could take to move us toward that reality. g Let’s Talk @ Lunch, a brown bag discussion exploring current issues from a racial equity lens, expanded to Evanston Public Library and Shorefront Legacy Center. g We initiated a bi-monthly film series about racism, “Reel” Issues, to catalyze honest conversation on how racism affects us all.
g We engaged our community by partnering with schools, churches and local organizations to discuss and better understand racism in our community’s structures. The first annual Stand Against Racism in Evanston was a huge success, drawing thousands to line Ridge Avenue in a community-wide demonstration against racism. g The 13th annual Ricky Byrdsong Memorial Race Against Hate brought almost 4,400 people together from throughout Chicagoland to walk, run, and race against hate, joining the YWCA in advocating for an end to racism and violence.
women’s leadership and economic empowerment Women who are empowered can thrive, achieve self-sufficiency, help create strong families, and enrich their communities.
g 83 women participated in our 6-hour Basic Money Management course, providing low-to-moderate income women with education to help with budgeting, banking, credit issues, and predatory lending. 142 women attended hour-long topic specific workshops. g We formed new partnerships with Family Focus and School District 65, and we continued our work with partners in an effort to bring financial literacy to more women in our communities. g We collaborated with Northwestern University Women’s Center and the Woman’s Club of Evanston and to celebrate our first International Women’s Day and raise awareness of issues relevant to women and girls both globally and locally. g We hosted 12 YW Community Cafés, bringing together 200 people with diverse ideas and perspectives to imagine Evanston as a community in which women and girls can thrive. g A capacity crowd of 400 people at the 5th annual YWomen Leadership Awards honored extraordinary women from our community who have shown leadership in impacting racial justice and the empowerment of women and, along the way, inspired all of us.

relationship violence prevention When our youth build the social-emotional skills to treat one another with respect and dignity, they learn to build healthy relationships as they mature.

understand that there were healthy and unhealthy relationships, or why girls whose boyfriends were jerks didn’t just break up with them. I never had any place to talk about this before. Now I know that I’m not alone, and that there are people I can talk to for help.”
g We logged 422 sessions with nearly 2,000 students from Evanston, Skokie, Des Plaines and Winnetka elementary, middle and high schools participating in our Building Healthy Relationships program. The program is designed to help students gain self-esteem and respect for others by learning how to deal with bullying, resolve conflict, and recognize what is healthy and what is unhealthy in their relationships. g We completed a three-year partnership with Loyola University to address campus dating violence, training their security and health and wellness staff and facilitating groups for women to discuss issues in their dating relationships. g We began a new partnership with Northwestern University, working with students, faculty and staff on issues of campus dating violence.
flying fish aquatics Children who have access to swim lessons can be safe in the water; enjoy our pools and beaches, participate on swim teams and gain access to jobs and recreational opportunities that can serve them for a lifetime. g 1,300 children were enrolled in our Flying Fish Learn-to-Swim Ten percent received financial assistance through the Flying Fish Scholarship Fund. g We welcomed 60 pre-schoolers from Child Care Center of Evanston for free swim lessons in the spring, and another 50 children from community camps received free swim lessons over the summer.
g We became a pilot program location for Evanston Swims, and all Washington School second graders were offered free lessons with at the YWCA once a week throughout the school year. g 40 swimmers participated in championship level meets at the state, regional and/or national level. Two swam at Olympic Trials. g $98,000 was raised by the Flying Fish Swim Team through the 18th annual Swim Marathon to support the programs and services of the YWCA Evanston/North Shore.

swim program and all it does for our children. My 8 year old daughter swam 82 lengths in an hour in the swim marathon yesterday. She has never really pushed herself to the limit in anything before and she is so proud of herself and what she can do.�
