Our Mission:
Eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom, and dignity for all.
Dear YW family and friends, I’m proud of the year we’ve had here at the YWCA of Asheville, and I want to thank you for your support of our mission and programs. Our organization has a legacy of empowering women and minorities and nurturing race relations that spans more than a century in our community. With this type of work, it can often feel that we take one step back for every two steps forward. As I reflect on the past year, however, I focus on the steps forward. Over this past year, our steps forward have been centered on strengthening the YW from the inside out. We are investing more in our staff’s ability to realize their fullest potential and do an outstanding job serving the community. Our staff has been empowered by a shift to an approach to decision-making and governance that gives everyone an ear, a voice, and informed influence over policy that affects them. Our staff retreat in April delved into the issues of unintentional bias, working to our strengths, and communication across differences. It was a huge step forward in breaking down silos that have existed between our program areas… and of course we all had fun and got to know each other a lot better! The YWCA staff is passionate, dedicated, and experienced, and they are the key to our success. I’m so proud of their work. I also want to briefly highlight some of our successes from the past year: •
More than 5,000 people participated in the Stand Against Racism, raising awareness across Buncombe County that racism can no longer be ignored or tolerated.
•
We increased our efforts on key issues that impact our mission and the community, such as voter registration, investments in child care funding, and women’s health.
•
The organization ended the year on firm financial footing.
At this past year’s Black & White Gala, more than 500 hundred people of diverse ages, races, and walks of life celebrated together. It was a truly beautiful sight, and helped me realize that all of those steps backwards are worth it, as long as we get to dance forward! Our supporters are excited about where the YWCA is headed… and it’s contagious. It’s exactly where we need to be as we turn our focus outward in 2014. Thank you again for dancing forward with us. Best regards,
Beth Maczka Executive Director The YWCA of Asheville | July 1, 2012 to June 30, 2013

Club W Health & Fitness Center
Steve >> Steve Wright is co-partner of Pack’s Tavern in downtown Asheville, and works out at Club W on a regular basis. Steve says a catalyst for becoming a member was when “I saw myself on TV one day and I said – ‘Holy cow, I need to lose weight!’” Steve comes to Club W every day to lift weights, run, and use the elliptical machines. Between his new exercise regimen and changes he’s made to his diet, he’s lost 50 pounds! “I feel so much better,” Steve says. Steve has tried out other local gyms and he insists that Club W stands out from the rest. “It starts at the front desk. Everyone always knows my name and is friendly. Other gyms have things this one doesn’t have, but the people and environment at the YWCA more than make up for it.” Steve is proud that his membership helps support the YWCA’s mission. “I think what the YWCA stands for is a big deal in the community. I wish more people knew about it – although then I might have to sign up for the equipment!” Meanwhile, Steve’s personal health transformation is having a broader reach; he has made changes to the menu at Pack’s Tavern so that there are healthier options for diners. 6

New Choices/Drop-In Child Care
Jammie << Jammie Wright first came to the YWCA’s New Choices program when she was pursuing a Surgical Tech Certificate and needed assistance with childcare. Jammie’s two high school-aged daughters were missing school because they had to help care for Jammie’s infant daughter, Tiraji, while she attended classes. Tiraji was cared for in Drop-in from the time that she was 4 months until she was 10 months old – allowing Jammie and her two older daughters to focus on their education. Jammie graduated with a certificate in June, 2013 and she’s now pursuing a Medical Assistant Associate Degree. “I wouldn’t have been able to further my education if not for New Choices and the YWCA,” Jammie says. “When my baby first started coming to the YW she had some health issues, but they took perfect care of her. I never had to worry.” Jammie adds: “I can’t thank them enough for all the help and support. My family is very grateful.”

MotherLove
Teresa >> Teresa came to MotherLove early in her pregnancy during her junior year at Asheville High. She formed a close bond with the Director of MotherLove, in addition to being matched with a trained MotherLove mentor. Despite a full course load and a job, Teresa immediately became invested in the program. Teresa became one of the founding members of MotherLove’s Leadership Group, comprised of motivated participants from each of our participating schools. She helped plan events, and took on the responsibility of reaching out to new participants. Teresa chose MotherLove as the subject of her senior project. The YWCA connected her with a professional filmmaker, Bruce Kennedy of InnerWorks Productions, and the result is a beautiful, moving short video illuminating MotherLove’s influence on the lives of Teresa and other participants. (View Teresa’s senior video on our website.) Teresa graduated from Asheville High in June of 2013, and is now in her freshman year at A-B Tech. We couldn’t be more proud of her and what she has achieved!

Child Care
Alex >> Alex, 4, came to the YWCA’s Child Care from another daycare center that had shut down abruptly. When he first arrived Alex had severe separation anxiety, refusing to participate or engage with other children or his teachers. “Alex was in a new center, and he had a brand new foster sibling in the home,” says Ms. Wanda, director of Child Care. “His emotional distress was so bad I was afraid he was going to have a nervous breakdown, and it didn’t seem to be getting better.” On Ms. Wanda’s recommendation and with Alex’s mom’s approval, he was signed up for Smart Start’s Sunshine Program, which brings child care consultants into the Center to help educators with individualized plans to assist children with emotional and behavioral issues. Ms. Wanda describes the changes that she’s seen in Alex thanks to a caring, nurturing environment that was personalized to his specific needs and challenges: “When he arrives in the morning he kisses his mom goodbye and allows her to leave. He loves going swimming, he loves going outside. Now he’s interacting with the children and really excelling.”

Preventive Health
Michelle << Michelle moved to Asheville 3 years ago with a host of medical issues, including anxiety and PTSD, high blood pressure, and Type II Diabetes. Michelle enrolled in the YW’s Diabetes Wellness & Prevention Program, meeting with a personal trainer and going to the gym 3-4 times per week. She takes advantage of various Club W classes, including yoga and swimming. Michelle has lost almost 20 pounds, and 4 clothing sizes. Michelle’s diabetes is now in check, and her doctor has taken her off her cholesterol and anxiety medications. “I used to have a lot of anxiety attacks, and I was in and out of the emergency room 3 or 4 times per year,” says Michelle. “Since I’ve been going to the YW I have not had an anxiety attack or been back to the ER. That’s exciting.” In the coming year Michelle’s goals are to try Zumba and cycling, and to lose an additional 10 pounds so that her doctor will take her off her blood pressure medication. “I feel so much better,” says Michelle. “It’s a phenomenal program! I brag about the YWCA all the time – I tell them about the programs, the classes, and the staff. I’m very fortunate to have found the YWCA.”
