How Far We’ve Come!

n January, 2013 the YWCA’s Board and staff developed an organizational Strategic Plan to guide our work over 5 years. Beth Maczka, CEO, says: “In my career it was one of the most inclusive processes I’ve been part of, and you can see this in the result: a clear vision of what we need to do to work towards expansion of our services in the long term, while continuing to provide critical services in the short term.” So what did we accomplish in the first year of our Strategic Plan? Here are just a few examples: Eliminating Racism: The YWCA held 75 Stand Against Racism events in 2015, comprising 14% of the 553 total Stand events nationwide. Empowering Women: Our new women’s empowerment program, Getting Ahead, had a successful pilot with 14 women graduating and another 12 participating in the second session. Many participants are YW employees. Creating a Great Place to Work: The YWCA’s Board of Directors approved a new parental leave policy that provides 4 weeks paid time off to full-time employees with a new child. Building a Sustainable Future: More than thirty donors became Eleanor Roosevelt Giving Society members ($1,000 or more per year for 5 years). Optimizing Communication: The Leadership Team participated in a messaging workshop, which resulted in a set of key messages that tied the work of each program back to the YW’s mission. Stay tuned for our 2014-2015 Annual Report, coming out this Winter - it will share even more of our great news and highlights from the past year. Thank you, as always, for your support. It truly makes our work possible!

YWCA Awarded SNAP-ED Grant Helping Us Make Even More Rainbows! Since 2012 the YWCA has provided healthy meals and snacks from our Rainbow in My Tummy Program for our children in our Child Care, After School, and Drop-In Child Care. Rainbow in My Tummy was created by the Verner Early Learning Center and is a way to help child care centers feed their children healthfully while still adhering to government guidelines. We stick to whole grains, mostly fresh fruits and veggies, lean proteins, and low fat dairy. Almost all of the food that comes out of our kitchen is made from scratch by our stellar kitchen staff every day. Read “A Day in the Life of the Rainbow In My Tummy Kitchen” (and other great stories) on the YWCA’s blog at www.ywcaofasheville.blogspot.com. Now, we’re proud to announce that we will be running SNAP Ed programming starting this fall, making us the first implementing agency in Western North Carolina! SNAP Ed is a grant designed to get Nutrition and Physical Activity education to SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) recipients, as well as the general public. As part of SNAP Ed our Nutrition Coordinator, Alex Mitchell, will run Color Me Healthy, a nutrition and physical activity curriculum, with our 3-5 year old Child Care students. Summer Camp students will participate in a physical activity curriculum and in regular food and nutrition activities as well. We will also hold events for our parents to learn how to make good nutrition and physical activity choices at home. “Nutrition and physical activity education is so important to start early, and SNAP Ed funds will give us the chance to provide these lessons,” says Alex. “I’m personally excited to get to interact with our kids and families more, and to teach information that they will then take out of the YW and into their homes and communities.” Do you have an idea for what we should call this “snappy” new work at the YW? Email your suggestions to marketing@ywcaofasheville.org!

Domestic Violence Awareness Month The Week Without Violence was Oct. 19-23 this year; National Domestic Violence Awareness Month was the entire month of October. The YWCA is the largest provider of domestic violence services in the country, serving more than 2 million women and families each year. Here in Asheville, in the 1970s the YWCA helped to initiate a grassroots rape crisis center that continues now as an independent organization – Our Voice – to serve all individuals in Buncombe County affected by sexual violence. We are also a proud partner of the eNOugh campaign – a coordinated community response to domestic violence and sexual assault with the goals of reducing domestic violence and sexual assault, preventing domestic violence homicides and making Buncombe County a safer place for all our citizens. In recognition of the Week Without Violence, we hosted and participated in Helpmate’s Clothesline Project, a way for those who have survived domestic or sexual violence and abuse to tell their stories, as well as a way for people to show their support for those who are living in violent or abusive situations. Year-round, the YWCA of Asheville serves domestic violence survivors through our programs – in particular in our Drop-In Child Care. Last fiscal year, our Drop-In program served nine participants referred from Helpmate, and we’ve assisted eight survivors of domestic violence through this service just since July.

Peggy Weaver’s Story: A Force For What’s Good

P

eggy Weaver moved to Asheville in 1991 with her husband and two daughters. While looking to buy a home, their realtor told them that they shouldn’t live in the Montford neighborhood because “there are black people there” and because it was “dangerous.” Disgusted, Peggy and her husband fired their realtor and moved to Montford. Peggy’s daughters attended the after school program at the YWCA during this time. In January, 2011 Peggy retired from her job as librarian at Asheville High. She says: “Joining the YWCA’s Club W was a no brainer. Of course the fitness programs are good for me, but the bonus at the YWCA is that I get to work out next to someone who doesn’t look like me. I love Club W because I can look across the gym or the parking lot and seeing people different from me – all sizes, shapes, colors, ages. I believe to be fully human you have to make it a point to encounter people not just like you. It broadens your whole view of your life.”

Peggy started attending to Tai Chi class every week, and joined the regular after-class gathering at Laurey’s café. They were at Laurey’s the morning that Laurey Masterton passed away after a her long battle with cancer. There was an outpouring of remembrances for Laurey in the community, and Peggy remembers reading a quote from Laurey’s sister Heather, who said that Laurey’s legacy was that she would want you to do something hard for you. Peggy says, “that’s when I thought: ‘I need to volunteer at the YWCA. I felt called to say ‘I’ll help,’ even though it’s not easy for me as an introvert and a home-body.” Peggy works closely every week with members of the YWCA’s Advancement Team - editing grant proposals, filing media clippings, stuffing envelopes - whatever needs to be done. “It gives me great pleasure to be affiliated with a force for what’s good and right in this crazy world we live in.” Peggy Weaver in the YWCA’s Laurey Masterton Memorial Garden

In November, 2014 - after coming on an Empower Hour tour - Peggy attended the YWCA’s first Persimmon Luncheon, Peggy’s daughters in 1993, when they attended the YWCA After School program and made a generous pledge of financial support. She says: “I choose to support the YWCA financially because I feel that my contributions to the YWCA, small though they are, make a big difference in the sustainability of the programs here. I love knowing that the programs I support help improve the lives of people who live in my own community.” Read Peggy Weaver’s full story on our blog at www.ywcaofasheville.blogspot.com.

A Conversation Between Between Beth Maczka and Ami Greene Beth: Tell me a little bit about your background. Ami: I live in Weaverville with my family. Several years ago I left my career as a social worker to spend more time with my children. This position at the YW is a great fit because it marries my previous experience working with children, as well as working with women in career programs. I also like that the YW is mission-driven. Beth: How do the Women’s Empowerment programs relate to the YW’s mission of empowering women and eliminating racism? Ami: All the programs I work with are targeted towards helping women reach the place they envision themselves being. In MotherLove we empower the participants to complete their education, and support them in their motherhood. In Getting Ahead we help women figure out a way to make a new start. In Drop-In Child Care the women are already on their path, but we give them the tools and support that they need. When it comes to eliminating racism, in Getting Ahead we talk a lot about the causes of poverty, and race is such a big part of that. Having a conversation and being honest about it, it’s the first step in eliminating it. Beth: What are you most looking forward to in the coming year? Ami: I feel a pulse of creativity going through the building… In MotherLove, the alumni are stepping up to help with the program. We just had a women’s empowerment volunteer luncheon, and people with ideas and energy are getting involved. A lot of new things are happening, and I’m excited to see where they go.

MISSION

The YWCA is dedicated to eliminating racism, empowering women and promoting peace, justice, freedom and dignity for all. @ywcaofavl www.facebook.com/ywcaofasheville
