01 NATURAL FORCES

- FROM CITY DUMP TO ECO-PARK Water pollution in the urban scale Team: Yue Jin, Liwen Zhang Caohai Area Design, March 2017 Location: Yunnan, China

[3]

The area of Dianchi Lake in Yunnan is bothered by water pollution for such a long time. In the past ten years, the local government has been devoted to controlling water pollution in this area. As a result, the effect is very little, though large quantities of resources are spent. My design site belongs to Caohai which is the north area of Dianchi Lake. Besides the problem of water pollution should be dealt with, there are lots of discarded lands on the agenda in order to create a good landscape effect. The design logic is to utilize water flow and wind direction to arrange the terrain of lakes and lands, and let the designed water purifier to clear out hazardous substances in the polluted water.

Residents have no alternative but to 'enjoy life' at all kinds of imappropriate places due to lack of activity space. One thing touches me the most is that when a boy was playing football along the pavement, his ball rolled to the middle of the street and a city hygiene worker helped him pick the ball up. Therefore, I decided to design a special activity.

The blue-green algae catcher can clean the water as well as become installation landscape when people walk past the riverside. These catchers look like flowers and rotate with the force of winds, flowing by water.

- FROM HISTORY TO REALITY Recording city history in the modern scences Individual Work October 2016 Location: Shanghai, CHINA

A new way to present the city history: The history of Sihang Warehouse is not known to most people. Its surrounding green space and activity areas have very single function, and is seperated both in contents and forms, as well as lacking strong historical and cultural characteristics. Compared to the deserted Sihang Warehouse, other historical cites have many hot spots with large numbers of streaming people. Some solutions can be attained from those examples.

•

1933 Old Workshop

The 1933 Old Workshop was formerly a slaughterhouse, which inherited the original structural system and spatial relationship. Based on original historical features, it has been transformed into a unique creative park. Lots of small shops, restaurants and studios would be stationed there, as well as drama performances, fashion shows and exhibitions being held here, which makes 1933 Old Workshop become a well-known art gathering area.

•

Yu Garden

After Yu Garden became the West Park of Chenghuang Temple, it has been open for free and become the main place for sightseeing and events-holding. Yu Garden has a long history for various flower exhibitions as well as recreation activities. The kistler, calligraphy and painting exhibitions, and tea ceremonies are common here. Adjacent to the commercial streets and the Chenghuang Temple, it really attracts many tourists.

•

Shanghai Bund

The Bund has become a financial and trade center for Shanghai and even China. It is also a portrayal of capitalism in old Shanghai, and has always been regarded as a symbol of Shanghai's architecture and urban landmark. The Bund stands with 52 classically revival buildings of different styles, and is known as International Architecture Expo, attracting lots of tourists from all around the world.

APPROACHES TO PRESENT THE HISTORY: The problem of Sihang Warehouse is its isolation. The solution is to open the closed Sihang Warehouse, spread contents of history into blocks and districts, and let its history well known to people. Thus, the nearby neighbourhood and Sihang Warehouse itself have connected and created a very unique historical and cultural area that attacts more people to come.

Build bunkers

Active in the battle

Before the attack, soldiers will build bunkers for defence.

Soldiers take out guns and ammunition ready for the approaching battle.

Conflicts in the Alley

Sacrifice in the battle

A lonely hero

Soldiers meet enemies at corners, and they will go fighting in the alley.

The enemies trap the soldier to desperating situation, but he dies with dignity at the last moment.

All come to the end with high explosive.

SITE 1 - A LONELY HERO Use the sculpture to present the scene where our hero stands on the heights for choosing to a heroic scacrifice. The sculpture only allows one person to visit once a time, and the bottom of it is a resting place.

SITE 2 - CONFLICTS IN THE ALLEY Due to the terrain and environment, warring parties have the possibility of escaping from chasing and killing, and often meet and conflict with each other in an unexpected way. The semiclosed and semi-open environment also makes communication among people more random.

SITE 3 - ACTIVE IN THE BATTLE Towering bamboos can be used to simulate guns and ammunition that are charged during the war. People walk and rest in the narrow bamboo forest. However, sometimes people can't completely see each other due to the obstruction of bamboos.

SITE 4 - SACRIFICE IN THE BATTLE A sinking tree can be used to symbolize the scene in which the warrior is forced to the dilemma by enemies. People talk and do something under the tree of the central square.

SITE 5 - BUILD BUNKERS There is a leisure plaze outside the Sihang Warehouse, and the terrain on the square is a simulation of bunkers during the war. People can rest and communicate in the bunker, or they can have exhibitions or parties outside it.
