In our magazine’s 8th year, we’re embracing what makes Zachary’s the best: Friendship, drive, and a whole lot of heart.

As strong and brilliant as diamonds themselves, our team exemplifies “the best,” in my opinion. Featured in our regency-themed fashion spread, “This Season’s Diamond,” you’ll see some familiar faces, as well as some new. Erica joined the Zachary’s team over 20 years ago and Taele, featured on the cover with her best friend Cash, joined us a few years back. Olivia and Leslie, our newest members, help round out one of the kindest, most caring teams we’ve ever had.

And speaking of what makes Zachary’s sparkle, this year we also share a spotlight story about Cheryl King, who tirelessly works to make our store the best it can be.

In this issue, you’ll also meet Horatio, Marley, George, and Cocoa. They’re often seen “walking their humans” in our dog-friendly town. Annapolis’ businesses do a great job making our furry friends feel at home, giving us inspiration for this year’s magazine.

Many couples took the plunge into the best chapter of their lives and began their #StoryofYes in 2022, including Errol’s son, Brandon, and his new wife Jennifer. And speaking of exciting new chapters, our very own Constance Polamalu gave birth to not only another baby boy, but a breathtaking jewelry collection, Birthright Foundry. In just one year, her jewelry has received the attention of celebrities, earned design awards, and I look forward to sharing her jewelry and successes with you.

Some say to be the best, you must be able to handle the worst. We have survived fires, floods, pandemics, and more. And time after time, my team has emerged with grace, open hearts, and a continued belief in our culture of happiness, which we are here to share with you.

Easily one of Corum’s most iconic collections, the Admiral embraces the spirit of contemporary design inspired by a long history with maritime sailing. This collection is beloved by collectors, especially those with a yearning to indulge in an active yet elegant lifestyle. Now, Corum’s master craftsmen unveil six new versions of the coveted Admiral 42 Automatic with a distinctive dial motif.

Three years after the inaugural America’s Cup race in 1957, Corum released its first Admiral watch. The brand worked with the race organization, for which it was a sponsor, to establish the first then-square Admiral watches that made their debut in 1960.

Two decades later, the Admiral collection was totally reimagined. It now boasted the 12-sided (dodecagonal) case shape and colored sailing pennants that quickly garnered a cult-like following and elevated the series to the legendary status it enjoys to this day. In the decades since, the Admiral has introduced new and more visionary evolutions (always inspired by marine races and sailing) and set the stage for this master of the seas timepiece.

Today, as Corum answers the call of contemporary casual navigators and lovers of the sea, the new timepieces are ready to go the distance. Each of the six versions boasts a dial with the three-dimensional Grenadier fendu motif that is proprietary to the brand. Introducing

Preserving the Cultural and Ancestral Practices of the Underrepresented

Zachary’s Constance Polamalu, an American Samoan and a first-generation jewelry designer, is the founder and CEO of Birthright Foundry. The Samoan oratory culture running through her veins makes her a natural storyteller. Constance considers her first language to be English, her second to be jewelry, and all her designs to be stories written in metal. As a new mother ignited by the turmoil of 2020, she founded Birthright Foundry to preserve culturally significant stories in jewelry.

In 2022, Constance was selected by the Natural Diamond Council and Lorraine Schwartz for the Emerging Designers Diamond Initiative

to highlight her collection. Following that achievement, INSTORE Magazine awarded Birthright Foundry’s Heritage Ulfa Nifo Necklace in 18kt. yellow gold with diamonds the first place in the Best Statement Piece category in their 7th annual Design Awards. Constance was also named as one of the 20 under 40 in Jewelry Retail by Jewelers of America.

In just one year, Birthright Foundry has been featured in major publications such as Esquire and Cosmo, and was worn at the Met Gala by Lizzo. It's safe to say Constance's future is as bright as the pieces she designs.

It's something that might've been worn hundreds of years ago by her ancestors, but she's making it something that she would wear and that you would see on the red carpet.

All That Shimmers

Seven years ago, Zachary’s found its missing piece. A piece they didn’t even know they were missing. A piece they certainly wouldn’t be whole without today.

Facing another holiday season, Zachary’s hired Cheryl King to help manage all of the details that come with the busiest time of the year. From helping with store decorations to restocking gift bags, Cheryl quickly proved to be an essential part of what makes Zachary’s tick. And a temporary holiday gig became a fulfilling, full-time career.

As Zachary’s Store Merchandiser and Event Planner, Cheryl’s responsibilities are boundless. Whether it’s bringing the annual magazine theme to life, spreading floor-to-ceiling holiday cheer in the store and its windows, or spearheading creative initiatives like Summer of Fun, Cheryl’s vision and attention

to detail have helped define the store’s culture of happiness.

While Cheryl has become a mainstay within the Zachary’s team, she has furthermore made her way into the heart of the store. “She is very much part of our family,” says Steve Samaras. As a loving and steadfast mother of two and a three-time cancer survivor, Steve adds, “these things have made her the warrior she is today.”

In a May 2022 article by INSTORE Magazine, Cheryl shared her advice for planning events in a postpandemic era: “Laughter is the best medicine. Do something that makes people smile. They want to feel good again.”

Luckily for Zachary’s, that’s exactly what Cheryl does.

MY BEST FRIEND’S Weddings

27 years ago, I moved next door to someone who would not only become my best friend but my family, Babette Quinn. Our girls were inseparable, and grew into beautiful and bright young women. As the years passed, I was lucky enough to join my family in the jewelry business. Little did I know that I would receive not one, not two, but four calls from Babette’s close family members who were ready to propose. Her cousin’s children trusted me with their engagement rings without even stepping in our store. Between calls and texts from New York to Florida, we found four perfect rings for four special young ladies. How honored am I that they chose me, and Zachary’s, to be their jeweler for this significant time of their lives.

Steven Russell selected a stunning marquis for his Nikayla in 2019. In 2021, Tyler Eck selected a cushionshaped diamond to propose to Laura. Then came the call I always looked forward to. Corey Leszczynski was ready to propose to Babette’s daughter, Lauren, who I always considered my “second daughter.” And keeping that secret from your best friend ain’t easy! Lastly, I got the call from Tyler’s brother, Justin, who wanted a cushion-diamond for his girlfriend, Katie.

As years have passed, thousands of tiny moments created my friendship with Babette. I wish these special couples millions of tiny moments on which to build loving lives together.

Zachary's Superlatives

When we first met, just over one year ago, we had no idea the hilarity that would ensue. Who could have known that what started as a competitive quest for Olivia to get an “A” from Errol, the gift-wrapping master, would set the stage for us to be best buds? Whether we are splitting a sandwich for lunch or getting into some shenanigans, there is always fun to be had when the both of us are around.

Let’s give credit where credit is due... We were both raised by parents who loved each other and grounded us as their children. When we got married, there was 100 years of marriage behind us with so much love and mutual respect. We are both proud of the legacy that preceded us and strive every day to make our parents proud.

We started out as friends, fell in love, and have always remained best friends! There is no one in this world that we would rather share our lives with than each other!

How lucky I am to be able to work with my sister, my best friend? When we used to be in separate locations, Stephen would get upset with us because we would call each other more than 7 times a day, and most often not about work stuff. I think he was a little jealous. Now that we're together at Zachary's, she's still the first person I call in the morning, the person that makes me laugh during the day, and the last person I hug before I head home.

Typically, people think of their work and personal lives as two separate worlds. Working with Hannah has merged mine. It has been a gift to watch her as she grows in the working world. When she succeeds, I’m overwhelmed with pride. When she makes a mistake (which is, of course, rare), I'm there to help fit the pieces back together, and ensure she learns from it. Everyday it is a source of great joy to have her with me.

We may be seven years apart, but having a baby sister like Evangeline is amazing. I truly believe we were meant to be twins. Not only do we look alike (customers constantly get us confused), but we complete each other's sentences and say words and phrases simultaneouslyuncanny! I say all of this because I not only love having a baby sister, but I feel truly blessed that my sister is Evangeline.

Working with my dad is incredible. The store already feels like a second home, but it’s taken to an entirely new level with him there. He’s a crucial resource for information, insight, and reassurance. Working with my father is more than just having a great partner at work, it’s a new way for us to bond. He’s my mentor, my rock (aha! get it?). He’s taught me so much and I am a better employee because of it.

Best friends and colleagues for over 40 years, Errol Daly describes Steve Samaras as the brother he never had. So naturally everyone was excited to hear that the Zachary’s family was expanding. Errol’s son, Brandon, was engaged to be married!

Their "Story of Yes" began as teenagers. Brandon had chased Jennifer from day one, and for years he had tried to convince her that someday they would get married. He was sure of it but needed to convince her.

Brandon’s persistence persevered. He sent her a message when he was stationed in Iraq, she responded, and they reunited when he got home. She had no doubt, he was the best man for her.

A romantic wedding at the Hay-Adams followed. It was everything Jennifer had ever imagined. Her dream came true, complete with candlelight, hundreds of orchids, and an elegant atmosphere. Most importantly, they were surrounded by family and friends. The Washington monuments were the perfect backdrop for this incredible evening with her best man.

"Spending time with my son early in the day before the ceremony was priceless. I had reserved a room for us to spend some time together. He was a nervous wreck and I sensed he needed his son near him. So we brought his baby, Brandon, Jr., to the room too. My mother, his grandmother, is no longer with us but I had brought a picture of her and we all sat together quietly and Brandon’s nerves calmed. We shared a quick bite and pulled ourselves together before all the festivities began. Getting dressed together in our black tuxedos, pressed white shirts, and red bottom shoes was a great memory I’ll always cherish. I’m so glad I was there for him. My son was getting married to the love of his life and I could not have been prouder.

The ceremony took place at the Hay-Adams in DC. It was an evening wedding and the room looked magnificent solely lit with candles. I’ve never seen anything more beautiful.

Being a man of honor and tradition, I respected and appreciated that the father of the bride insisted that everyone be prompt. It was important to him that once he started walking his daughter down the aisle, there would be no interruptions. Jennifer was so gorgeous and seeing my son’s face light up brought such joy to my wife Gwen and me.

When the elevator doors opened to the penthouse ballroom, it was a tremendous setting. Her father spared no expense and gave his daughter a fairytale wedding.

If you know me, you know I never left the dance floor! What an incredible night we all had. Sharing the evening with friends and family was a true blessing.

Errol Daly, Steve Samaras’ best man in friendship and business, has been married to the love of his life, Gwenda, for over 45 years.
